 YANGON, 23 July-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe has sent felicitations the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt Mr Hosni
Mubarak on the occasion  of the National Day of the Arab Republic of Egypt which falls on 23 July  2000.

YANGON, 22 July-Special Refresher Course No 40 for Basic Education Teachers  concluded at Nawarat  Hall of the Central Institute of Civil Service in  Hlegu  Township this morning with an address by
Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen  Khin  Nyunt.

The Secretary-l said that at a time when student youths are being nurtured  to  become reliable for the  future of the nation, special refresher courses  are  being conducted in accord with the objectives of the nation to enable teachers. practically engaged in this work, to be well-versed in the  academic subjects and to apply modern teaching methods and to carry out reforms  which  can contribute towards their  spiritual development.

In view of the current international situation, information technology is making progress rapidly, and so is the whole world. This being so, taking their future into account, every nation has to introduce well
worked-out measures to promote the interest of respective nations and the peoples.

It is found that under these circumstances, taking advantage of  technological development, some  nations are attempting to impose social and cultural systems which suit their tastes, on developing  nations with the use of information technology, and to exert ideological and cultural influence on  them.

Moreover, the government of Myanmar, setting its sights on the emergence of a united, peaceful,  stable, modern, developed and democratic nation which achieves sustainable economic development
and safeguard the environment, is actively cooperating with the nations of the world family  in striving for international peace, security and development.

Today, Myanmar has been participating in the activities of Non-aligned Movement and playing an  active part in the regional organization.  The Union  of Myanmar is also taking part in the Association of  Southeast Asian Nations  and BEMSTEC, an economic cooperation association formed with nations of  Southeast Asia and South Asia.

In conclusions he urged the teachers to endeavour for development of human  resources development which is pivotal- in emergence of a peaceful modern development nation, to  train the Students to possess national spirit and patriotism which are genuine powers in fighting against
the political, economic and cultural influences with the application of modern techniques  of destructive elements and neo-colonialists who wanted to dominate the international community and' to organize the
entire people including  student youths to participate in unison in building a new nation based on  Patriotism, the Union Spirit and national outlook. Then, the Secretary- 1 presented  model trainee awards  to Senior Assistant Teacher U Min Naing of Pazundaung  Township Basic Education High School No 1 and JAT Daw Nu Nu Mon of Ye Township BEMS  No 2 and other prizes to the outstanding trainees.

Afterwards,  the Secretary-l presented model hostel awards to No 4 hostel of men's No 7 Company and  No 5 extension hostel of women's Company 10 and certificates for trainees to Leaders of trainees. Next,
trainees presented  K 10,000 each towards the funds of Koenawin Pagoda of CICS, Koenawin  Dhammayon and renovation for Bagan ancient pagodas, K 5,000 for the National Convention, K 5,000
for the funds of Union Solidarity and Development Association, K 10,000 for CICS BEPS and K 2,675 for  CICS Pre-Primary  School. The Secretary- 1 accepted the donations and the ceremony came to a close.
After the ceremony, the Secretary-l cordially conversed trainee teachers  and left CICS in the morning.

(3)  Secretary-2 inspects fisheries work, farm machinery exhibitions

YANGON, 22 July-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council  Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected  work being undertaken for fisheries in Thayagon Village  near Wanbawdat Bridge at the border between
Yangon and Bago Divisions, and farm machinery exhibition organized by entrepreneurs at Kyungalay Village,  Hlegu Township today.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party were welcomed there by member of the State Peace and  Development Council Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of  Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye,  Commander of No 77 LID Col Maung Maung Swe and officials.

At the briefing hall of Thayagon fish and prawn breeding station of  Myanmar Pyithahei KN Co,  Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo met with division/district/township-level departmental officials, farmers and
livestock breeding entrepreneurs.

Speaking on the occasion, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said that the State  has been encouraging the  private sector to develop agricultural, fisheries and industrial sectors with added momentum; and thus,  entrepreneurs, farmers  and livestock breeding entrepreneurs need to pay serious attention to and do  their utmost for the success of the work There is rich natural resources which cannot still be fully  exploited in the country, and it is crucial to carry out the job, he said.

The Secretary-2 said he had encouraged the farmers to take up fish  breeding in Wanbawdat region  in  view of surplus water in the region in the rainy season, and arrangements have been made to build  Lagonpyin and Alaini reservoirs in the region where conditions are favourable, and on  completion, the two reservoirs will irrigate 20,000 acres and prevent flooding in the rainy season, he noted and added  the region will emerge as a region where agriculture and livestock breeding will be carried out in the near future.

Managing Director of Myanmar Pyithahei KN Co U Tin Win said he was given permit to breed fish on  136.53 acres in Thayagon near Wanbawdat Bridge. Altogether 150,000 fingerlings are now being bred in  10 fish breeding  ponds and a total of 75,000 viss of fish will be produced by December 2000.

More fish breeding ponds are to be dug and more fish are to be produced,  he added.

Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint reported on  and position near Wanbawdat  Bridge and arrangements for construction of  Lagonpyin and Alaini reservoirs for agriculture.

Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye reported on rainfall in Bago Division and cultivation of monsoon paddy.

Chairman of Extended Prawn Breeding Committee Minister-at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin  Ngwe reported on arrangements for prawn  breeding and encouragement to prawn breeders.

The Secretary-2 then gave instructions. The Secretary-2 and party  inspected fish and prawn breeding  farms of Myanmar Pyithahei Co in Thayagon. The Secretary-2 and party went to Kyunkalay Village to
attend farm machinery exhibition there. They were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Industry-2  Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw and officials. The Secretary-2 and party together with farmers inspected tractors of
Agricultural Mechanization Department, small rice mill, thrashers, harvesters, compound fertilizer,  engines and  tractors of Shwe Thanlwin Co t Ltd, Yi Shin Co Ltd, Good Brothers Co Lid and Aung  Kaba
Co Ltd. The Secretary-2 and party inspected paddy dryer innovated by  Central Warehouse of Agricultural Mechanization Department.


(4) Secretary-2 inspects Post-harvest Technology Application Centre

YANGON, 22 July-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council  Lt-Gen Tin Oo this  afternoon inspected Post-harvest Technology Application Centre and 100 ton Rice Mill No 222 of
Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading under  the Ministry of Commerce in Kyungalay Village in Hlegu  Township. Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone-explained matters related to the Post-harvest
Technology Application Centre to Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Then, Deputy General Manager of the Centre U Saw Sisal Kyi reported to the Secretary-2 on  establishment of the Centre in 1979 and objectives and functions of the Centre.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said the Post-harvest Technology Application  Centre has been established  for 20 years, and spoke of the need to make  Post-harvest Technology Application Centre an important
centre for the ministry, other departments and private entrepreneurs, he added. Afterwards, Secretary-2  Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party inspected oil and oil crops and insect  laboratories. Minister for Commerce
Brig-Gen Pyi Sone presented a supplementary report. Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo gave necessary instructions to officials and inspected the mill. The 100-ton Rice Mill No 222 has been in operation  since
1985 and it mills 100 tons of rice per day.

( 5 )  Minister inspects MPF Central Training Unit

YANGON, 22 July-Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, accompanied by officials, arrived at  Myanmar Police Force Central Training Unit in  Zeebingyi region of PyinOoLwin District yesterday
morning. In the briefing hall, Principal Police Brig-Gen Win Myaing reported on training and teaching  and administration and supply matters.

The minister gave instructions on training for emergence of patriotic,  loyal, modern and high quality  police force in accordance with the guidance of  the Head of State. Then, the minister met members of
MPF of the Training Unit  and families at the hall. He gave instructions on aims and duties of the ministry, four building tasks, forming the MPF as a reserve force of the State and development of  cultivation and livestock breeding. Next, the minister inspected the school library and museum,
computer rooms,  cultivation and livestock breeding tasks and staff quarters.

After that, the minister, and party inspected Patheingyi Township Police Station and cultivation farm,  Aungpinle Police Station and staff quarters.


(6)  Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image crowded with pilgrims, local people

YANGON, 22 July-Members of the Sangha and local people continued to pay obeisance to Lawka  Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image in Sakyin Village,  Madaya Township, yesterday.

Well-wishers and members of religious associations offered 'soon' and soft drinks to Sayadaws who  recited Pathana.

Members of 21 wut associations recited religious verses at the image. Pilgrims and local people were  served with drinking water and soft drinks. Workers and departmental personnel cleansed the image
which was kept on  the Yadana Nanyinbyan of Myanma Railways.

Dr Sein Lin and staff of Thaphandaunt Station, Madaya Township, provided health care service to  workers, members of the Sangha and people. Pilgrims and local people read newspapers, journals and
booklets including  documentary photos of Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image at the mobile library  opened by Head of Madaya Township Information and Public Relations Department U  Myo
Myint. In night, Thitlwin Anyeint. of Mandalay presented the audience with entertainment.


(7)  Reception Sub-committee (Ygn) meets to convey Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Buddha Image

YANGON, 22 July-The Reception Subcommittee (Yangon) for Conveying Lawka Chantha Abhaya  Labha Muni Buddha Image held the coordination meeting at entertainment pavilion on Phaungdawseik
bank in Gyogon yesterday morning. They discussed arrangements to entertain members of the Sangha,  guests wut associations, mingalarsidaw troupes and musical troupes when the image arrives there.

(8)  Non-stop recitation of Pahtana for conveying Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Buddha Image concludes

YANGON, 22 July-A ceremony to conclude non-stop recitation of Pahtana for conveying Lawka  Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Buddha Image was held yesterday  at Maha Pahtan Mandat at the foot of
,Sakyintaung in Madaya Township.

The congregation received the Nine Precepts from Mandalay Maha Visuddhayon Atulagonyi Kyaung  Sayadaw Agga Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Bhaddanta Odata Siribhivamsa. Chaukhsukyaung Sayadaw
Bhaddanta Sopak reported on donations from various parts of the nation. Assistant Director U Khin Maung Win and officials presented offertories and robes to members of the Sangha. Atulagonyi  Kyaung Sayadaw presented K 600,000 to Assistant Director U Khin Maung Win.

Members of the Sangha recited Parittas. Members of the Sangha led by  Sayadaw Bhaddanta Odata  Siribhivamsa recited Parittas in Sakyintaung for 23 days.


(9) Voters of Salin Township Constituency-1 express no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and demand its dissolution

YANGON, 22 July-Eligible voters of Salin Township Constituency-l, Magway Division, expressed no  confidence in U Kan Oo who was elected as representative of National League for Democracy in the
1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Salin Township Constituency-l and no  support for  him and petitioned for dissolving NLD at four rallies on 17 June  morning.

At Hsinphyukyun-2 Myoma Sports Grounds, 12,500 voters of 25 village- l  tracts rallied. On behalf of  the voters, Advocate U Soe Lwin of Hsinphyukyun-2-2 expressed no confidence in U Kan Oo and no
support for him and petitioned  for dissolving NLD. Representatives of the voters of wards and Village tract presented petitions signed by eligible voters to member of Township Multiparty Democracy  General Election Sub-commission Head of Township Information and Public Relations Department U Myint Maung. A similar rally was held at Tanyaung Basic Education High School and attended by  11,500 voters of 22 Villagetract.

On behalf of the voters, farmer U Ngwe Thaung of Zibyu Village expressed  no confidence in U Kan Oo  and no support for him arid petitioned for  dissolving NLD. Representatives of the voters of wards and village-tracts presented petitions signed by eligible voters to member of Township Multiparty  Democracy General Election Sub-commission Headmaster of BEHS (Retired) U  Aung Shwe.

A total of 21,000 voters from six wards and 47 village-tracts rallied at Salin Sports Grounds. On behalf of  the voters, Advocate U Win Tin of  Hsinkyon Village expressed no confidence in U Kan Oo and no
support for him and petitioned for dissolving NLD. Farmer U Shwe Ba of Moewin Village, on  behalf of the voters of wards and village-tracts, presented petitions signed by eligible voters to Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General  Election Sub-commission Head of Township General  Administration Department U Aung Myint.

Similarly, 8,958 voters from eight village-tracts rallied at Tawseint Village. On behalf of the voters, farmer  U Arnt Ko of Zedwin Village expressed no confidence in U Kan Oo and no support for him and  petitioned  for dissolving NLD. Farmer U Thein Aung of Tawseint Village, on behalf of the voters of wards and village-tracts, presented petitions signed by eligible voters to member of Township  Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Dr U Kyi Win.

The ceremonies ended with the chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main  National Causes". Out of  43,365 eligible voters in Salin Township Constituency-2 in 1990 election, 28 220 or 71.04 per cent voted
for U Kan Oo. Out of 58,449 eligible voters in all, 55,601 voters or 95.13 per cent expressed no confidence  in U Kan Oo and no support for him.

Out of 116,530 eligible voters in all in Salin Township, 110,986 voters or 95.24 per cent signed  declarations expressing no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it.


(10)  21 Letpadan Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 22 July-Twenty one members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Letpadan  Township, Bago Division. Twenty one members of  Letpadan Township NLD, Bago Division, of their
own accord, resigned by sending  letters of resignation to Letpadan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 30 March 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
