(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to  Colombia

YANGON 20 July- Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of  the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message Of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Andres Pastrana
Arango, President of the Republic of Colombia, on the occasion of the Independence Day of the Republic of Colombia which falls on 20 July 2000.

(2) 53rd Anniversary Arzani Day observed in Yangon

YANGON, 19 July- The 53rd Anniversary Arzani Day WAS observed at the Arzani Mausoleum at 8 am  today.

On behalf of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, Chairman of the 53rd  Anniversary Arzani Day Observance Committee Minister for Culture U Win Sein attended the  ceremony, saluted the State Flag, laid wreaths at the tomb of the national leader Bogyoke Aung San and his fallen colleagues and paid tribute to them and dispensed metta. Chairman of the 53rd Anniversary  Arzani Day Observance Committee Minister for Culture U Win Sein arrived at the Mausoleum at 8 am
and was welcomed by Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt. All those present saluted the State Flag. Minister U Win Sein, Chief Justice U Aung Toe, Attorney-General U Tha Tun and Deputy Auditor-General U Khin Win laid wreaths at the tombs and paid tribute to the Arzani.

At that time, the State Flag was lowered to half mast. The Guard of Honour of Tatmadaw (Army, Navy  and Air) also saluted the fallen leaders. This was followed by dispensing of metta and two minutes of
silence in memory of the Arzanis.

Afterwards, Minister U Win Sein, Chief Justice U Aung Toe, Attorney-General U Tha Tun and Deputy  Auditor-General U Khin Win and Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt left the Mausoleum. Later,
the families of the Arzanis laid wreaths at the respective tombs. First, U Aung San Oo, eldest son of  Bogyoke Aung San, and wife Daw Lei Lei Nwe Thein laid the wreath. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, daughter of Bogyoke Aung San, laid a flower basket and dispensed metta. Next, the families of other Arzanis laid wreaths at the respective tombs and dispensed metta.

Then, representatives of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Myanmar War Veterans Organization, non-governmental organizations, diplomats and heads of UN agencies also laid wreaths.

(3) Traditional Performing Arts Competitions produce significant, worthy results for people and Union

YANGON, 19 July - A preliminary meeting was held at the National Museum this afternoon to  coordinate holding of the Eighth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions.

Patron of the Leading Committee for Organizing the Eighth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts  Competitions Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt delivered an  address. All should make concerted efforts for the success of the Competitions which are benefiting the nation and the people.

Maung Than explained efforts being made to hold the Competitions and suggestions concerning pros and cons on the Competitions.

Acting Director-General of Fine Arts Department U Kyaw Win presented salient points of the  Competitions, followed by a general round of discussions.

The Secretary-1 coordinated their requirements, saying he believed that the suggestions and  discussions made at the meeting will assure successful holding of the Eighth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions

Head of State Chairman of the State Peace and-Development Council Senior General Than Shwe said  that Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions are satisfactory giving a guidance to, send expert teams from the central level to states and divisions, which have not fully taken part yet in the contest to promote their participation in the competitions to a certain degree.

In accord with the guidance, starting from this year, the expert teams from the central level will be sent to  the respective states and divisions to give training to artistes of those regions to enable them to take part more in the competitions.

The Ministry of Information should make greater efforts to ensure effectiveness in assigning artistes duties to revitalize folk songs; the songs of the national people should also be invigorated. It is required
to broadly study the international music to systematically adopt its suitable portions in uplifting Myanmar traditional culture. International musical note courses conducted by Myanmar Music Asiayon should be extended to enable Myanmar artistes to be well versed in international music.

MMS presented K 500,000 for the Competitions. Also present at t meeting were ministers, Yangon Mayor, deputy ministers, members of the Leading Committee, the director-general of the State Peace and
Development Council Office, heads of departments, doyen artistes and other officials.

(4) Secretary-1 inspects construction of Gandhakutitaik for marble image

YANGON 19 July- Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt,  accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Min Dhamma Hill lock in Insein Township this morning.

Minister U Aung Khin reported on arrangements for conveying Kyauktawgyi marble image.

Next, Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin reported on measures undertaken  for conveying the marble image from the foot of Min Dhamma Hillock to its top and preparations along
the route from Gyogon port to Min Dhamma Hillock. Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe and officials reported on construction of the foundation for the marble image and Mingala Mandats. Adviser to the State Peace and Development Council Office U Arnt Maung reported on religious matters on conveying the marble image.

Command Staff Colonel of Yangon Command Col Myat Ko report on arrangements for welcoming the marble image.

Deputy Chief Engineer (Architect) of Public Works U Aung Kyee Myint reported on architectural model  of Gandhakutitaik where the marble image is to be kept and arrangements and Myanmar Architect U
Ohn Tin on plans to decorate the Gandhakutitaik.

The Secretary-l then gave instructions on coordination among departments concerned for conveying  marble image.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected preparations for conveying marble image from the foot of Min  Dhamma Hillock to its top and construction of Mingala Mandats on Min Dhamma Hillock.

The Secretary-l gave instructions and inspected preparations of along the route and the place where  Thonlutaukpa Yadana Shwephaungdaw (barge) is to be moored.

(5) Minister meets Foreign visitors

YANGON, 19 July- Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met Chairman of Europ Continents S A of  France Mr Jean Marc Beaujolin and party at his office at 11 am today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, Directors General U Nyunt Aye and  Col Nay Win, Managing Director U Min Hla Aung and officials.

(6) Deputy Minister inspects preparatory work for conveying Marble Image

YANGON, 19 July - Deputy Minister For Transport U Pe Than, accompanied by officials of Myanma  Port Authority and Inland Water Transport left here by air for Mandalay on 18 July. At the meeting hall
of Mandalay Airport, officials of IWT, Marine Administration Department, Directorate of Water Recourses and Improvement of River Systems and Meteorology and Hydrology Department reported
on preparatory work for conveying Marble Image to the deputy minister. The deputy minister and party proceeded to and arrived Sakyintaung by car and inspected construction of decorated train, water availability, and route to be used for conveying Marble Image.

The deputy minister gave instructions on preparatory work being carried out for systematic departure of  decorated float according to schedule.

(7) Myanmar to hire Chinese sports coaches

YANGON, 19 July- Myanmar agreed on hiring sports coaches from People s Republic of China. The  agreement to hire the coaches was signed at Padamya Hall of National Indoor Stadium 1 in Thuwunna at
10 am today. Present on the occasion were Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Secretary-General of MOC Director General of Sports and Physical
Education Department Col Thaung Htaik and officials, Deputy Director General of Sports General Bureau of the People s Republic of China Mr Zhang Faqiang and members and officials of Chinese  Embassy. Secretary-General of MOC Col Thaung Htaik and Director General of Sports for All  Administration Wang Xiao Lin signed the agreement and exchanged the documents.

Chairman of MOC Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, accompanied by Secretary-General of MOC Col  Thaung Htaik and officials of Chinese Embassy, saw off Deputy Director-General of Sports General
Bureau Mr Zhang Fa Qiang and members at Yangon International Airports in the afternoon.

(8) PRC sports delegation visits MRF

YANGON, 19 July -A sports delegation of the People s Republic of China led by Deputy Director-General of Sports Bureau of PRC Mr Zhang Faqiang visited Myanmar Rowing Federation at Inya Lake
this morning.

Accompanied by General-Secretary of Myanmar Olympic Committee Director-General of Sports and  Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik and personnel concerned and officials of the PRC
Embassy, the guests arrived at the Federation at 8 am and were welcomed by President of the Federation U Sein Tun, Secretary Professor Dr Than Toe and officials.

Athletes of Myanmar national rowing team demon started the International Dragon Boat race.

Together with officials of the Federation, the guests observed the training being given to Myanmar  selected athletes. The two sides also discussed matters relating to boat races.

(9) 7 Aungmyethazan Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 19 July-Seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of  Aungmyethazan Township, Mandalay Division.

Seven members of Aungmyethazan Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned  by sending letters of resignation to Aungmyethazan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election
Sub-commission and the party concerned on 5 May 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
