(1) Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council  inspected Yeywa Hydel Power Dam Project and Paunglaung  Multipurpose Dam Project

YANGON, 11 July - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye inspected Yeywa Hydel Power Dam Project and Paunglaung Multipurpose Dam Project yesterday and today. Accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Air )Gen Kyaw Than, the ministers, senior military officers and heads of department the General helicoptered to Yeywa Hydel Power Dam Project in Kyaukse Township, Mandalay Division, from Nyaungshwe, Shan State, yesterday morning.

Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut presented a report, stating that Myanma Electric Power Enterprise has already conducted feasibility study to implement the Yeywa Hydel Power Dam Project which is located 28 miles east of Mandalay. The dam will be built on Myitnge River. It is estimated that the project will generate 700 megawatts of power when completed. Preparatory arrangements including improvement of roads to the project have already been started. The Project Director U Ba Si reported on tasks to implement the project. In the afternoon, the General and party proceeded to PyinOoLwin and were welcomed by Vice-Quartermaster-General Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, Commander of PyinOoLwin Station Commandant of Defence Services Academy Brig-Gen Tin Oo and officials.

The General and party inspected development of PyinOoLwin and the surrounding areas of the 31st Mile Camp. The General and party met with division-level official Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint said due to excellent rain fall, cultivation of crops including paddy could be extended in the division. Fe division saw a growth in GDP during the first three months of the fiscal. Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin discussed the agricultural advantages of the division and Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha economic targets of the division.

General Maung Aye said the government was able to successfully implement first four-year short-term plan in laying down short-term and long-term plans for national economic progress.

The General cordially converse with those present at the meeting. This morning the General ant party arrived at Paunglaung Multipurpose Dam Project in Pyinmana Township and were welcomed by member of the State Peace ant Development Council Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye ant officials. Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and an official reported to the General on progress in building the rock-filled dam ant spillway and implementing of the irrigated system and progress in implementing the entire project. Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint reported on assistance being rendered by the local administrative bodies. General Maung Aye spoke of the need to systematically implement every stage of the project and to keep records in implementing the task.

The General then presented a fruit basket to General Manager Mr Peng Yong Tun of Yunnan Machinery Import and Export Corporation of the Peoples Republic of China who is taking part in implementing the project. He also presented gifts to the staff of the project through a representative. Afterwards, the General and party inspected progress in building the upper retaining dam, water inflow at the diversion tunnel and building of the spillway. They also inspected building of the low presented tunnel of the underground power station project.

Paunglaung Multipurpose Dam is being built on Paunglaung River near Kyitaung- Khiawma village ten miles east of Pyinmana in Mandalay Division. The project will irrigate nearly 50,000 acres and generate 280 megawatts of power and will prevent the river from flooding. The Irrigation Department and the Myanma Electric Power Enterprise are implementing the project sector wise. The General and party arrived back her at 4 pm.


(2) Year 2000 World Population Day observed

YANGON, 11 July- A ceremony to mark the Year 2000 World Population Day was held at International Business Centre on Pyay Road this morning, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were the ministers, the Chief Justice, senior military officers, ambassadors, resident representatives of UN agencies, advisers, representatives of NGOs in Myanmar, social associations, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, directors general and officials of departments under the Ministry of Immigration and Population, prize winning students and their parents and guests.

First, Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun delivered an address. In conclusion, I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to Excellencies and distinguished guests, and to all concerned for making this commemoration of World Population Day a success .

Then, Country Director Dr Sheila Macrae of United Nations Fund for Population Activities gave a speech. Afterwards, the Secretary-l accepted books for the Ministry of Immigration and Population presented by Dr Sheila Macrae. Then, the Secretary- 1 and Minister, Deputy Minister presented first, second and third prizes.

Dean of Diplomatic Corps Ambassador of Lao Peoples Democratic Republic Mr Ly Bounkham presented gifts to artists who contributed services in organizing the World Population Day ceremony. After the ceremony, the Secretary-l and party and guests viewed the World Population Day commemorative Exhibition.

(3) Deputy Prime Minister meets Finnish Ambassador

YANGON 11 July-On behalf of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe, Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun met Finnish Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Tauno Kaaria who has completed his tour of duties in Myanmar at the guest house of Ministry of Defence at 10 am today. Also present were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and officials.


(4) Minister for Health attends coordination meeting on combating malaria. tuberculosis and AIDS

YANGON, 11 July- Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein left here for Chiangmai to attend coordination meeting on combating malaria, tuberculosis and AIDS in border areas at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health of Thailand Mr Korn Dabbaransi.

On 5 July, the delegation arrived at Maesai in Thailand via Tachilek. The minister and party visited Chiangmai Hospital. Deputy Permanent Secretary Dr Supachai Kunaratarapruk of Ministry of Public Health reported on health data in the border area, outbreak of diseases and measures undertaken. The minister discussed opportunities for cooperation in health matters in border towns and seeking ways and means to overcome difficulties.

The minister visited Doi Tung House of the King_s mother and Botanical Gardens.

On 6- July, a coordination meeting on combating malaria, tuberculosis and AIDS in border areas was held at Wasting Riverside Plaza Hotel. Myanmar delegation discussed tasks to solve health problems occurred in border areas and matters relating to opportunities in cooperation with WHO and NGOs. The opening ceremony of coordination meeting on combating malaria, tuberculosis and AIDS between the two countries was at Westin Riverside Plaza Hotel The Minister and party arrived back here on 10 July.


(5) Minister for Hotels and Tourism meets Bangkok Airways officials

YANGON, 11 July-Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met (Marketing) Vice-President Mr Peter Wiesner of Bangkok Airways and party at his office this afternoon. Also present were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, the Director-General, the Managing Director and officials of the ministry.

(6) Commerce Minister meets UMFCCI officials

YANGON, 11 July-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met with officials of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry this afternoon at the Federation. President of the Federation U Win Myint reported to the minister on the situation of the Federation and its accomplishments. The minister said the Federation, which is an economic organization, should make efforts for its progress. As the government is striving for national economic progress, the Federation should also extend economic contacts with foreign economic organizations. The Federation should be a reliable force for the national entrepreneurs in maintaining economic relations with foreign counterparts.

Those present at the meeting presented accomplishments sector-wise.


(7) Third Meeting of ASEAN Senior Officials on Forestry continues

YANGON, 11 July-The Third Meeting of ASEAN Senior Officials on Forestry, ASOF, hosted by Myanmar for the first time, continued for the second day at Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.

Senior officials on forestry of ASEAN member nations Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, representatives of ASEAN Secretariat and observers attended the meeting.

Director-General Dr Kyaw Tint of Forest Department presided over the meeting and delivered a speech. Then, the delegates discussed ASEAN Cooperation Programmes and Projects in Forestry and Joint ASEAN Positions and Approaches on Regional and International Forest Issues and there was a break. When the meeting resumed at 2 pm, the delegates discussed ASEAN Cooperation with Dialogue Partners in Forestry ASEAN Mekong Basin Development Cooperation on Forestry and other matters on ASEAN. Afterwards, the delegates confirmed to hold the fourth Meeting of ASEAN Senior Officials in the Philippines that is in turn alphabetically and the meeting came to an end. The meeting will continue at the same venue tomorrow.


(8) Yangon Mayor meets Indian Ambassador

YANGON, 11 July-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay met Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Shyam Saran at his office at 10 am today. Also present were Vice-Chairman of YCDC Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Secretary Col Myint Aung, committee members of YCDC Col Thaung Wai and Col Tin Soe, Heads of Department and officials.

(9) Preliminary coordination meeting on compiling Statistics on Gender Issues in Myanmar held

YANGON, 11 Preliminary coordination meeting on compiling Statistics on Gender Issues in Myanmar was held at Social Welfare Department is afternoon.

Vice-Chairperson of Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs Professor Daw May May Yi, member Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, member of Mandalay Division Committee for Women's Affairs Dr Daw Tin Lin Myint and members, advisers and guests were present.

Professor Daw May May Yi spoke on the occasion and leader of the work committee to compile statistics Professor Daw Khin Aye Win explained formation of the work committee for compiling Statistics on Gender Issues in Myanmar and indicators.

Joint Secretary of Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs Assistant Director of Social Welfare Department Daw Khin Hta May recounted experience of Regional Workshop on Statistics on Gender Issues held in Bangkok from 1 to 5 May. A general round of discussions then followed


(10) Illegal drug possessors get prison terms

YANGON, 11 July-Members of Anti-drug Squad (Yangon Division) searched suspect Bo Bo, 21, of 14th Street Yanpyay Ward, Thakayta Township at Dhamayon Street Dawbon Township at 2.55 am on 3 October 1999 and found 3.1 grams of marijuana on him Action was taken against him in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Dawbon Township Court handed down five year-imprisonment under Section 15 and seven year- imprisonment under Section 16 (C) on him to serve separately on 12 May 2000.

Similarly, members of Tachilek Township Anti-drug Squad, acting on information, searched the house of Ma Aye Aye Myint, 33, of Pone Tun Ward, Tachilek Township at 5.30 pm on 20 November i998 and found 8.2 grams of heroin in a box in the ceiling. Action was taken against her in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Sub-stances Law. The Tachilek District Court handed down ten years and six months_ imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on her on 27 April1999.

(11) 13th Gems and Jade Sale of UMEHL continues

YANGON, 11 July-The 13th Gems and Jade Sale of Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited continued at Myanma Gems Emporium on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road from 9 am to 5 pm today. Managing Director Brig-Gen Win Hlaing of UMEHL attended the sale. Altogether 734 gem merchants-6S2 from local and 82 from abroad at tended the sale.



(12) 21 members resign from Bago Township NLD of own accord

YANGON, 11 July-Twenty-one members resigned of their own accord from the National League for Democracy of Bago Township, Bago Division.

Twenty-one members of Bago Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 12 January, 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
