(1) General Maung Aye inspected Mongshu gems land and met with departmental personnel in Taunggyi
YANGON, 10 July-Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye inspected Mongshu gems land and met with departmental personnel in Taunggyi yesterday and today.On arrival at Lashio Airport, the General and party were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Commander of North-East Command Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo,Col Myint Hlaing of Hsenwi Station and officials.
The General and party helicoptered to Mongshu gems land, where they were -welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo, departmental personnel and local people.
The General viewed the gem mining blocks from Loi Hsaung Htaunk Camp. At the briefing hall, the General met with officials and gems mining entrepreneurs. Deputy Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise U Than Htaik reported on gem mining blocks and gem mining, Tactical Operations Commander Col Hsan Tun on security measures and Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo on development of roads leading to the gem land.
After looking into their requirements, the General said the government is making systematic arrangements for the progress of Mogok gems land, Phakant gems land and Mongshu gems land. Minister for Mines Brig- Gen Ohn Myint also met with gems mining entrepreneurs. In Taunggyi, the General and party met with local authorities and departmental personnel in Thanlwin Hall of the Eastern Command. Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj- Gen Nyunt Tin and Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha said the departmental personnel . General Maung Aye said Average income of the people increased significantly due to successful implementation of the plans. Efforts should be made to exceed this year's economic targets. Plans should be laid down region-wise to ensure food sufficiency in all states and divisions. Some of the states are enjoying surplus rice production within a short period. Shan State (South) could produce sufficient food for the region in the past; but sown acreage decreased due to internal insurgency.
As the region has many vacant, fallow and virgin lands, efforts should be made in extending sown acreage and use of quality strains; local authorities should tour down to the grassroots for progress of agriculture and the region.
The General then cordially conversed with those present at the meeting. This morning, General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San attended the 89th birthday ceremony of the State Ovadacariya Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Sayadaw Bhaddanta Vimalabhivamsa, the Principal Sayadaw of Kangyi Pariyatti Sarthintaik in Nyaungshwe.
The Sayadaws performed the rituals-to reordering the Venerable Sayadaw. The Sayadaw Bhaddanta Vimalabhivamsa administered the Five Precepts.
General Maung Aye and Daw Mya Mya San presented offertories to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Vimalabhivamsa. Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and Daw Khin Than Nwe and party presented offertories to Sayadaws. The congregation shared the merits gained.
Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt met staff at Taunggyi Township Development Affairs Department Office yesterday morning. Officials reported to the minister for accomplishments. The minister gave suggestions.

(2) Secretary-1 attends conveying ceremony of marble image from Sakyintaung to Yangon
YANGON, 10 July-A ceremony to convey the marble image weighing about 500 tons and over 37 feet in height from Sakyintaung in Madaya Township, Mandalay Division was held at the foot of Sakyintaung this morning, attended by Secretary- 1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
The marble image will be kept for public obeisance on Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township. Present on the occasion were members of the Sangha led by State Ovadacariya Joint Shwekyin Sasanabaing Mandalay Maha Withoadyon Taikthit Waso Kyaung Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Bhaddanta Aggiya, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint well wishers and local people. The Secretary-1 and party took the Nine Precepts from State Ovadacariya Joint Shwekyin Sasanabaing Mandalay Maha Withoadyon Taikthit Waso Kyaung Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Bhaddanta Aggiya. Next, disciples presented parittas threads, Parittas sand, Parittas water and Parittas flowers to the Sayadaws. The members of the Sangha recited Parittas. The disciples conveyed Parittas threads and tied them and sprinkled Parittas sand and water in the restricted area and well-wishers took designated places in front of Kyauktawgyi Image. The Secretary-1 sprinkled scented water on Kyauktawgyi Image.
At the auspicious time, the Secretary-1 formally started the conveying of Kyauktawgyi Image. The Secretary-1 and party performed the rituals of golden and silver showers. Next, the Secretary-l and party inspected Yadana Nanyin, Mingalar Natpan Yahta and Thonlutaukpa Yadana Shwephaungdaw which will convey Kyauktawgyi Image. A work coordination meeting on conveying Kyauktawgyi Image was held at the Sakyintaung.
Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and Deputy Minister U Pe Than reported on arrangements for conveying Kyauktawgyi Image from the Sakyintaung in Madaya Township to Mindhamma.Hill in Insein Township, Yangon Division.
Chairman of the Central Committee for Conveying Kyauktawgyi Image Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin reported on arrangements for conveying Kyauktawgyi Image by Thonlutanukpa Yadana Shwephaungdaw and the donations made by well-wishers to the trust fund of Kyauktawgei Image.
Sculptor U Taw Taw and Sculptor U Aung Thwin of Myanma Traditional Artistes and Artisans Asiayone reported on progress of work in sculpturing Kyauktawgyi Image.
Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein reported on arrangements for entertainment and Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe on construction of the throne at Mindhamma Hill. The Secretary-l said that Kyauktawgyi Buddha Image is being sculptured, and it will become the biggest Image in the world.
He noted that meticulous arrangements have been made to convey Kyauktawgyi Buddha Image to Yangon, and called on all to cooperate in carrying out respective tasks. After that, the Secretary-l and party observed the sculpturing of Kyauktawgyi image.
(3) Secretary-1 inspects construction work in Mandalay
YANGON, 10 July-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads and responsible officials, left here by Tatmadaw aircraft on 9 July afternoon and arrived Mandalay at 3 pm the same day.
Secretary-l Lt Gen Khin Nyunt and party, accompanied by Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, inspected construction of Taungthaman Lake Circular Road, work for cleaning and beautifying Mandalay Lake and construction of Myepadetha Kyun in Mandalay. Then, Secretary Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party arrived Nanmyo Guest House, where they spent the night.
Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party, accompanied by Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Mandalay by Tatmadaw aircraft this morning, and they arrived Sakyintaung in Mandalay Township , Mandalay Division, at 6.15 am. Afterwards, Secretary-1 Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt attended a ceremony to convey Kyauktawgyi Marble Image from Sakyintaung in Mandalay Township held . Afterward, secretary-1 Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt and party arrived back here this afternoon via Mandalay.

(4) Officials meet directors of TV commercials
YANGON, 10 July-Officials met directors of TV commercials to enable them to produce systematic and high standard TV commercials was held at the Tatmadaw Guest House-2 this afternoon.
Deputy Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies Deputy Director of Defence Services Intelligence Maj Gen Kyaw Win, Director Brig-Gen Khin Aung Myint and Deputy Director Col Kyaw Myint of Public Relations and Psychological Warfare, Director-General U Khin Maung Htay of Myanma Radio and Television, Managing Director Col Bo Kyi of Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise, Chairman of Myanma Motion Picture Asiayon U Sein Tin, Secretary- U Kyaw Thu, officers of Directorate of Defence Services Intelligence and directors of TV commercials attended the meeting. Maj-Gen Kyaw Win gave instructions on rules and regulations to be followed by directors in accord with Myanmar culture to produce high standard of TV commercials.
(5) Third Meeting of ASEAN Senior Officials on Forestry ASOF, opens
YANGON, 10 July-A ceremony to open the Third Meeting of ASEAN Senior Officials on Forestry, ASOF, hosted by the Union of Myanmar for the first time, was held at Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning, with an opening address by Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone.
Also present on the occasion were Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung. Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung, Deputy Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Brig-Gen Zaw Tun, Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Forestry, the Director General of ASEAN Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Director General of Traditional Medicine Department of the Ministry of Health, departmental heads, Ambassadors of ASEAN member nations, senior officials on forestry of ASEAN member nations Brunei, Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Indonesia, representatives of ASEAN Secretariat, observers and departmental officials.

After the opening ceremony, the minister, the deputy minister and guests viewed booths of Ministry of Forestry and Ministry of Health.
In the evening, Minister U Aung Phone hosted dinner at the Trade Centre of Myanma Timber Enterprise in honour of the delegates.

(6) Third Meeting of ASEAN Senior Officials on Forestry held
YANGON, 10 July-The Third Meeting of the ASEAN Senior Officials on Forestry, hosted by Myanmar for the first time, was held at the Meeting Hall No 2 of Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.
Senior officials from ASEAN countries Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, officials from ASEAN Secretariat and observers attended the ceremony.
Director-General Dr Kyaw Tint of Forest Department, Ministry of Forestry presided over the meeting. At the First and Second Meetings Secretary General Datuk Haron Siraj of Ministry of Primary Industries, Malaysia acted as chairman
Director-General Dr Kyaw Tint delivered an opening speech. Then, the delegates discussed on prevention of forest fire in ASEAN region signing the Memorandum of Understanding on boosting production of forest products, implementing of strategy on cooperative work of forestry in the region and progress in cooperative work on forestry of ASEAN nations.
The delegate from Indonesia discussed the paper on Laying out the Same Standard and Norm for the Forest Products of ASEAN Nations.
The delegate from Malaysia presented the paper on Forming of ASEAN Forest Product Production Service and discussed long-lasting forestry management norms and standards.
Then, the delegate from Thailand discussed the paper on Forming of Central Department for Control of Forest Fires and the meeting came to an end in the evening. The second day of the meeting will be held at the same venue tomorrow.
(7) Minister meets Chinese entrepreneurs
YANGON, 10 July-Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung met Deputy President Mr Ding Jianxin and party of Tianjin Machinery Import & Export Corporation (Group) of the People's Republic of China at his office this evening. Also present at the call were Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Thein Tun and Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry.

(10) Illegal drug possessors get five and eleven years
YANGON, 10 July-Members of Special Anti drug Squad (Yangon Division) searched suspect Tun Tun Oo, 32, of Moe mahka Street, Mont-taung Ward, Sangyoung Township, at Myaungmya Street in Sangyoung, Township, at 7.30 pm on I May 1999 and found 0.0521 kilo of marijuana on him.
Action was taken against him in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Yangon West District Court handed down twenty-five years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on him on 3 May 2000.
Similarly, members of Tachilek Township Special Anti-drug Squad acting on information, raided the house of Ma Nan In, 49, of Ponthon Ward, Tachilek Township, on 8 October 1999 and found 560 stimulant tablets on her. Action was taken against her in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Tachilek District Court handed down eleven years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A) on her on 27 April 2000.
(11) 13th Gems and Jade sale of UMEHL continues
YANGON, 10 July- The l 3th Gems and Jade sale of Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited continued for the second day at Myanma Gems Emporium on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.
Managing Director Brig-Gen Win Hlaing of UMEHL attended the sale and Director Col Aung San and members of Board of Directors conducted him around the sale. Altogether 634 gem merchants-604 from local and 30 from abroad attended the sale.

(12) 15 Hlaingthaya Township NLD members resign of own accord
YANGON, 10 July-Fifteen members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Hlaingthaya Township, Yangon Division. Fifteen members of Hlaingthaya Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Hlaingthaya Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 29 June, 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
