(1) Senior General Than Shwe sees off Secretary-1 on his departure for Islamic Republic of PakistanYANGON, 8 July-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe saw off Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt who left here for the Islamic Republic of Pakistan by air at 8 am on 3 July to pay an official visit at the invitation of Chief Executive of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and the Army Chief General Pervez Musharraf.

YANGON, 8 July-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe welcomed back Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt who arrived back on the flight of Myanmar Airways International at 2.55 pm today after a six-day official goodwill visit to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan at the invitation of Chief Executive of Islamic Republic of Pakistan and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and the Army Chief General Pervez Musharraf. YANGON, 8 July-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt called on Chief Executive of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and the Army Chief General Pervez Musharraf at his office in Islamabad on 4 July.
Present together with the Secretary-l were Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for Industry-2 Maj.- Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Deputy Minister for Defence Brig-Gen .Khin Maung Win, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Chief of Staff (Navy) Rear-Admiral Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Brig-Gen Chit Than of the Ministry of Defence, Myanmar Ambassador to Pakistan U Soe Win and the directors-general.
Also President Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Abdul Sattar, Minister of Commerce and Industry and Production Mr Abdul Razzak Dawood, Defence Secretary Lt-Gen Nasim Rama retired and senior officials. The two leaders exchanged experience on nation-building tasks and discussed promotion of bilateral relations and other of common interest.
The Secretary-l said the Tatmadaw is endeavouring for emergence of a peaceful, modern developed democratic nation after taking up duties of State under unavoidable circumstances. A1- though some nations of the West put; pressure on Myanmar in various means including political and strategic objectives and economic sanctions, Myanmar gained achievements, he said.
He said achievements have been made due to correct leadership of the government and united cooperation of the government, the people and the Tatmadaw and the support of the people.
He expressed his wish to strengthen bilateral goodwill relations and cooperation. General Pervez Musharraf said he was pleased to receive the high- ranking delegation of Myanmar and Pakistan wished to strengthen bilateral relations and was ready to cooperate in various areas. He expressed gratitude for explanation of developments in Myanmar and congratulated Myanmar on her achievements. Developed countries criticizing the developing nations should carefully study' whether real conditions and endeavours of the government are in conformity with the interests of the State and the people or not.
The Pakistani General spoke of the need to promote cooperation among the developing nations. The Secretary-l and the General exchanged gifts. General Pervez Musharraf hosted lunch in honour of the Secretary-1 and goodwill delegation. .

(4) Secretary-1 pays goodwill visit to Pakistan
YANGON, 8 July -A Myanmar delegation led by Secretary- 1 of the State Peace and Development Council left here by air on 3 July morning on a goodwill visit to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan at the invitation of Chief Executive and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and the Army Chief General Pervez Musharraf.
The delegation arrived at Changi International Airport at 12.15 pm local time in Singapore. The Secretary-l and party were welcomed by Myanmar Ambassador to Singapore U Myo Myint and embassy staff. Then, the Secretary-l and party flew on to Pakistan and arrived in Lahore in the evening.
They were welcomed at the airport by Acting Commander Maj-Gen Avid on behalf of Commander of the 4th Army Corps Lt-Gen Khan Maqbool, and senior officers, Myanmar Ambassador to Pakistan U Soe Win, Military Attache Col Hla Myint and embassy staff. The delegation stopped for a while at the guest house of Pakistani Army, and left Lahore for Islamabad by air.
The delegation arrived at Islamabad International Air- port at night. The Secretary-l and party were welcomed there by Rear Admiral Mohummad Haroon and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pakistani Ambassador Designate to Myanmar Mr Mian Yousuf Shah, embassy staff and families, Myanmar citizens who are working for UN agencies in Pakistan and families.
The Secretary-1 and party stopped for the night at the Marriott Hotel.
At 9.00 am on 4 July, the Secretary-1 went to the Headquarters of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and met with Director-General of the Headquarters of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Lt-Gen Akbar Khan.
Also present together with the Secretary- I were Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Deputy Minister for defence Brig-Gen Khin Maung Win, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Chief of Staff (Navy) Rear-Admiral Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Brig- Gen Chit Than of the Ministry of Defence and directors-general.
Also present together with Lt-Gen Akbar Khan were high-ranking officials of the Headquarters of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. They discussed further strengthening of friendly ties between the two Tatmadaw and promotion of bilateral cooperation. Then, gifts were exchanged.
The Secretary-1 also me with Vice-Chief of Pakistani Air Force Air Marshal Muhamad Farooq Qari at his office at 10.30 am. They discussed further cementing of friendly ties and promotion of cooperation between the two Tatmadaw.
At 11.00 am, the Secretary- 1 and party met with Secretary of Defence of Pakistan Lt-Gen Nasim Rana (Retired). They discussed promotion of bilateral cooperation between the two Tatmadaw and matters related to exchange of visits and relations between the two countries.
Also present together with the Secretary- 1 were Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Chief of Staff (Navy) Rear-Admiral Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Brig- Gen Chit Than of the Ministry of Defence and directors- general.
Present together with Lt-Gen Nasim Rana (Retired) were high-ranking officials of Ministry of Defence. After the discussions, they exchanged gifts. In the afternoon, the Secretary-l and party went to Faisal Mosque in Islamabad. They were welcomed there and conducted round the mosque.
Then, they enjoyed the scene of the city of Islamabad from Dbman-e- Koh Hil1. Afterwards, they visited Shakar Parisan Park and observed the trees planted by foreign heads of state on their visits. In the evening, the Secretary-l and party attended dinner hosted by Myanmar Ambassador to Pakistan U Soe Win.
On their arrival at the residence of the ambassador, they were welcomed by the ambassador and wife, the military Attache and wife, embassy staff and families and Myanmar citizens who are working for UN agencies in Pakistan.
Before dinner, the Secretary- I said that Myanmar and Pakistan have established diplomatic relations since 1947, and after Myanmar re- gained independence in 1948, the relations between two countries are making progress considerably.
The heads of both countries exchanged goodwill visits, and later, the relations have remained stable. After General Pervez Musharraf assumed the duty of State, he invited the Secretary-l to pay a goodwill visit to Pakistan.
At present, the two countries, Myanmar and Pakistan, are carrying out nation-building tasks, and the sense of cooperation on a mutually beneficial basis has become evident.
In conclusion, the Secretary-l urged all to strive for further strengthening of friendly ties and further improvement of relations between the two Tatmadaw, to promote economic and socia1 cooperation between the two countries, and to discharge assigned duties conscientiously.
Then, the Secretary-l presented gifts to the ambassador and wife, embassy staff and families.
The ambassador and the military attaché also presented gifts to the Secretary-1. Then, the Secretary-l had dinner together with the embassy staff and families.

(5) Secretary-2 attends power tiller efficiency competition
YANGON, 8 July?Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the power tiller' efficiency competition arranged by Agricultural Mechanization Department at Thaiktukan Model Village, Thongwa Township, this afternoon.
The Secretary-2 was accompanied by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Minister at the Prime Ministers Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, deputy ministers, the vice-mayor, senior military officers and heads of department. Director-General of Agricultural Mechanization Department U Win Maw reported on the purpose of the competition and matters related to companies which were participating in the competition and farm machinery. Then, the Secretary-2 and party inspected power tillers, diesel engines, thrashing machines, harvesting machines and transport vehicles displayed by U Shwe Mya-Daw Nu Nu (007) Company Ltd, Shwe Tun Company Ltd, Yee Shin Company Ltd, Good Brothers Company Ltd and Aung Kaba Company Ltd.
Personnel from the companies reported on machines and their efficiency.
Then, the Secretary-2 and party, together with local farmers, watched the competition of the power tillers of Shwe Tun Company Ltd and Yee Shin Company Ltd.
Next, the Secretary-2 made a speech. He said that the government is attending to the needs of farmers, the majority of the population of the country, in order to improve their living standard. He thanked companies for their participation in the competition. He added that the five companies which are taking part in the competition are distributors of farm machinery, and spoke of the need for the companies to sell appropriate farm machines to the farmers at reasonable prices. He called on all to make arrangements to enable the farmers to apply farm machines. Afterwards, the Secretary-2 presented cash awards to personnel from Shwe Tun Company Ltd and Yee Shin Company Ltd which stood first together in the competition.
(6) Two-storey Pariyatti Saddhammasabha Convocation Hall, entrance v hall of Kayan Pali Tekkatho Kainggon Kyaungtaik opens
YANGON, 8 July-A ceremony to open the two-story Pariyatti Saddhammasabha Convocation Hall and the entrance hall of Pali Tekkatho Kainggon Kyaungtaik of Kayan Township was held in conjunction with the rice donation ceremony of families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and well-wishers at the Kyaungtaik this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo At 9.40 am, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Maung Maung Soe and executive of Township Union Solidarity and Development Association U Win Swe formally opened the two-storey building.
The Secretary-2 and party performed the rituals of golden and silver showers to mark the success of the opening ceremony. Then, the rice offering ceremony and dedication ceremony for the two-storey building and entrance hall were held. Chairman of Township.
SanGha Nayaka Committee Presiding Nayaka of Pali Tekkatho Kainggon Kyaungtaik Agga Maha Pandita Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kelasa administered the Five Precepts. The Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Ministers and deputy Ministers presented provisions to Sayadaws. Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and well-wishers to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kelasa.
Next, Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, Yangon City Development Committee, Yangon South District Peace and Development Council, departments and well-wishers donated 140 bags of rice, 30 viss of edible oil, 500 viss of salt, 50 packets of soft salt and 2,240 bottles of traditional medicines to the Sayadaw.
Well-wishers then presented cash towards the funds of the Kyaungtaik to the commander and ministers. Similarly, the Secretary-2 and party accepted donations for the Convocation
Then, Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Maung Maung Soe supplicated on the construction of the building which cost over K 20.5 million and is 110 feet long and 52 feet wide,. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kelasa delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.

(7) Seminar on Current: International Issues Affection Forestry and Forest Products concludes
YANGON, 8 July-The second and last day programmes of Seminar on Current International Issues Affecting Forestry and Forest Products, hosted by Myanmar for the first time, continued at the meeting hal1 of Sedona Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.
Delegates from ASEAN countries, Brunei, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Indonesia, representatives of UNCTAD, ITTO and FAO, the director-general of Department of ASEAN Affairs of Military of Foreign Affairs, officials of Myanmar National Commission for Environmental Affairs, delegates from ASEAN Secretariat, observers officials of NGOs in Myanmar Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation and Deve1opment Association, Forest Products Joint Venture Corporation Ltd, Myanmar Forest Products and Timber Merchants' Association and Wildlife Conservation Society-Myanmar Programme attended the seminar.
First, delegate from Malaysia Mr Abdul Assize Mad presided over the seminar and made an opening speech at the plenary session.
Then, delegates from ASEAN countries discussed the problems in the forestry sector faced internationally and approved the recommendations to be submitted at the Third ASEAN Meeting of High-level Forestry Officials to be held in Yangon from 10 to 12 July.
The seminar came to an end in the afternoon with a closing address by the chairman. Delegates from ASEAN countries and representatives of international organizations, accompanied by officials of Ministry of Forestry, visited Myanma Gems Museum Myanma Gems Enterprise, Ministry of Mines, on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road in the evening.
(8) Illicit drug Possessor and trafficker get imprisonment
YANGON, 8 July-The North Okkalapa Court handed down a sentence of 7 years' imprisonment on an illicit drug possessor on 1 July, 2000.
Acting on information, members of Yangon Division Anti-Drug Squad, at 5.30 pm on S June, 1999, searched one suspect Ye Lay (a) Rahin, 40, son of U Ha Than, of 262, Thida Lane, Ward 8, Thakayta Township, and seized 16.3 gms of marijuana on him.
He was tried under Section 16 (C) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law and sentenced to seven years' imprisonment. Likewise, the Mandalay Division Court handed down a sentence of 15 years' imprisonment on a drug trafficker on 6 June, 2000.
Members of Mandalay Division Special Anti-Drug Squad acting on information, searched the house of Ma Toe Toe, 32, daughter of U Aung Tin, of Eastern Than-lyet-hmaw Block 430. Maha Aung Mye Township, Mandalay Division, and seized 49 gms of heroin in her possession.
She was tried under Section 19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law and sentenced to IS years' imprisonment

(9) Voters of Pwintbyu Township unanimously petition for dissolving pessimist NLD
YANGON, 8 July-Voters from Pwintbyu Township, Magway Division, expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolving it at two venues on 30 May.
A total of 11,400 voters from wards and village-tracts rallied at Shauktaw Village Sports Ground.
On behalf of attendance's, farmer U Kyaw Myint of Kyaungsu Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Farmer U Maung Maung Lwin of Ooyinkyit Village, on behalf of attendance's, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Ngwe Thaung. Similarly, 12,500 voters from wards and village-tracts rallied at Pwintbyu Sports Ground.
On behalf of attendance's, farmer U Sein Tun Aung of Lekaing Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Farmer U Tin Win of Thayettaw Village, on behalf of attendance's, presented petitions signed by the people to Chairman of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Khin Maung Toe.
The ceremonies ended with chanting of the slogan Our Three Main National Causes. There are 97,590 eligible voters in Pwintbyu Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it, is 78,747 people or 80.69 per cent.
(10) 37 Yamethin Township NLD members resign of own accord
YANGON, 8 1U1Y?Thirty-seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Yamethin Township, Mandalay Division.
Thirty-seven members of Yamethin Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Yamethin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 25 June, 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
