(3)  WHO-Country Office in Myanmar issues Press statement on World Health Report

YANGON, 29 June-The World Health Organization-Country Office in Myanmar today issued a Press  statement on the World Health Report. The following is the full text of the Press statement:

The issuing of a World Health Report is not a new event. The World Health Organization has been  preparing yearly the World Health Report since 1995. The Reports cover different themes on health  development issues. The current report, "Health Systems: Improving Performance", uses various parameters to assess the health systems performance of Member countries.

We are deeply concerned at the way that the countries have been ranked and aware of the fact that the  publication of the report has caused considerable distress among health workers and policy makers in
Myanmar. We have shared this concern with our South East Asia Regional Office in New Delhi and our  Headquarters in Geneva.

Together (Country, Regional and Headquarters level) we are now considering the meticulous comments  made by the Ministry of Health of Myanmar and our Regional Office has formed a Working Group and
initiated a critical review of the report regarding methodology and data used in the report.

The Regional Director, Dr Uton Muchtar Rafei is according the highest priority to this issue. A high- level task force meeting, comprising senior health officials from the 10 member countries of the Region,  is being organized for 27 and 28 July in the Regional Office. The Task Force will suggest amendments and refinements to help make future reports a useful tool for health planners and decision-makers. The  main objective will be to ensure that the report uses data that are reliable, valid and also that the
methodology applied is objective.

We think that the World Health Report 2000 should be further refined to make it a really useful tool for  health planners and decision-makers. We look forward to our continued collaboration and support to  Myanmar's health development efforts.
