(5)  Ministry of Health totally rejects WHO's World Health Report 2000 Will proceed on chosen path for benefit of all citizens

YANGON, 28 June-The following is the Press Release issued by-the Ministry of Health today:

The Ministry of Health has learnt with deep regret that the WHO, in The World Health Report 2000 issued in  Geneva on 21 June 2000, ranks Myanmar near the bottom of the list notwithstanding the significant gains  made by the Myanmar health system in recent years. The Ministry finds it highly objectionable that unreliable  methods have been employed to arrive at the assessment. Myanmar is aggrieved that its unrelenting efforts  to improve health system performance have not been given the recognition it deserves but instead  discredited. The report is an egregious misrepresentation of the
overall health system performance of  Myanmar. In the circumstance, the Ministry of Health finds the report totally unacceptable.

 - Myanmar has for long been cooperating with the World Health Organization and has worked in concert with  the organization in implementing projects. The WHO should work fairly and equitably together with all its  members and should consult pertinent data compiled by experts concerned in assessing the health system  performance of a particular country.

The report in question claims to have based its conclusion on small scale surveys and key informants. These compilations are biased deviations from the pertinent data published by the Government and are found to be unacceptable.

The terms of responsiveness of the health system in the report are based on subjective data and assessment. It is tantamount to an insult to the entire patriotic health personnel who are dedicated and are  providing health care. The Ministry totally refutes the assessment.

Moreover, the indicators are found to be erroneous and do not stand the test. That Myanmar's health performance is assessed to be worse than that of failed states is totally biased.

Therefore, the Ministry of Health totally rejects the WHO's World Health Report 2000. Regardless of whoever  resorts to whatever criticism, the Ministry will proceed on its chosen path of implementing all aspects of  modern health services for the benefit of all citizens.
