(1) Senior General Than Shwe inspects major bridge construction projects in Yangon Division

YANGON, 26 June - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General- Than Shwe inspected major bridge projects in Yangon Division being implemented and gave guidance on construction work this morning.

The Senior General, accompanied by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-General (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo and officials of the Office of State Peace and Development Council office, went to the Project of Hline River Bridge (Shwepyitha) which links Hlinethaya Township, Insein Township and Shwepyitha Township at 9.30 am.

On arrival there, they were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Myint Thein, Managing Director of Public Works U Nay Soe Naing, Director-General of the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development U Arnt Kyaw and officials.

The Senior General and party heard a report on progress of work of the project and efforts for timely completion of the project by Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun. Assistant Engineer of Public Works U Soe Min K ported on piling work and the laying of stone slabs or the main bridge and construction-work, and Managing Director U Nay Soe Naing on the capacity of the bridge.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and Mayor U Ko Lay reported on measure ;being taken to make the environs of the bridge beautiful and pleasant and the condition of approach roads. The Senior General gave guidance on the planting of trees along the approach roads to the bridge. Then, the Senior General and party inspected construction work, the laying of stone slabs on the bridge and progress of work. Hline- River Bridge (Shwepyitha), 3,415 feet long, is of reinforced concrete type, and its upper structure is the steel framework.

The motor road of the bridge is 52 feet 6 inches wide and there feet two 6-foot-wide pedestrian lanes, The clearance under the bridge is 52 feet 6 inches wide and there are two 6-foot-wide pedestrian lanes. The clearance under the bridge is 350 feet wide and 39.37 feet high at high tide. Sixty-ton vehicles can run on the bridge. The Senior General and party then proceeded to the Project of Aungzeya Bridge which crosses Hline River.

They were welcomed there by Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than and officials.

The Senior General and party inspected the installation work and measures being taken to make the environs of the bridge beautiful and pleasant. In the briefing hall, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun reported on the project and Superintending Engineer (Project) U Khin Maung Aye on progress of work.

The Commander and the Mayor also reported on measures being taken to make the environs of the bridge beautiful and pleasant and Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than on the ebb and flow of the tide in Hline River.

Deputy Director-General of the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development Col Tin Tun reported on development work for the environs of the bridge.

The Senior General gave guidance on the work. Afterwards, the Senior General inspected Locking Pieces to be used on the upper structure of the bridge towers and - inspected progress of work.

The bridge linking Insein Township and Hlinethaya Township is a suspension bridge, 1,930 feet long. The approach structure on the bank of Insein Township is 1,032 feet 8 inches long and the one on the bank of Hlinethaya Township 850 feet 7 inches long. Sixty-ton vehicles can run on the bridge.

After the Tatmadaw government assumed the duty of State, Bayintnaung Bridge has been completed first out of the bridges crossing Hline River. Aungzeya Bridge and Shwepyitha Bridge will be completed in a few months' time. On completion of these bridges, transport will become smoother and easier. The Senior General and party then went to Maha Bandoola Bridge Project.

In the briefing hall of the project, Maj-Gen Saw Tun reported on construction of Maha Bandoola Bridge spanning Pazundaung Creek and linking Pazundaung Township and Dawbon Township.

Deputy Superintending Engineer U Ohn Han reported on facts about the project and progress of work.  The Senior General gave guidance on the work and inspected construction work. Then, the Senior General and party inspected the installation of steel cables and the environs of the bridge. The Senior General and party inspected the bridge by car and left the project site.

Maha Bandoola Bridge, 3,643.33 feet long, has six lanes and will soon be put into service. The project employees are just finalizing the project.


(2) Secretary-1 presents prizes to winners in competitions to mark International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

YANGON, 26 June- A ceremony to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, sponsored by the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control of the Union of Myanmar, was held at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street in Dagon Township this morning.

Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony and presented prizes to winners in the short story, article, song, poem, painting, cartoon and poster competitions to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Also present on the occasion were ministers, deputy ministers, members of CCDAC, senior military officers, ambassadors, military attaches, resident representatives and officials of UN agencies, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, members of the Central Committee for Organizing the Ceremony, teachers and students, departmental officials and guests. Chairman of CCDAC Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing delivered an address. Then , Minister Col Tin Haling accepts the donations and presented a certificate to the donor. The Secretary-1 and ministers are presented prizes to winners.

(3) Secretary-1 offers 'soon' to Alodawpyay Sayadaws, members of the Sangha

YANGON, 26 June-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt offered 'soon' to Sayadaw 456 student monks of Dhammacariya Course and 246 nuns led by Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Alodawpyay Sayadaw Bhaddanta Ariyavamsa at Aungmye Bodi Dhamma Yeiktha Alodawpyay Kyaungtaik (Yangon) on Shwenyaungbin Street in Tamway Township this afternoon. Also present on the occasion were the ministers, the Vice-Mayor, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, well-wishers and disciples.


(4) National-level Drug Education opens

YANGON, 26 June-In commemoration of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking National-level Drug Education Exhibition organized by Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control was opened at the Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wisara Road this morning, attended by Secretary of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were Secretary-3 of the. State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, the ministers, the deputy ministers, members of CCDAC, senior military officers, ambassadors, military attaches, resident representatives of UN Agencies, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental officials, members of the Committee for holding Drug Education Exhibition, officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Associations students and guests. Chairman of the Committee for holding of Drug Education Exhibition deputy Minister for Information Brig- Gen Aung Thein formally opened the exhibition. Then, The secretary-1 signed in visitors book. The exhibition opens daily till 5 July from m9 am to 5 pm.

YANGON, 26 June-Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung met Director Ms' Jessie Fu of Hong Kong Trade Development Council at the meeting hall of Myanma Radio and Television at 3 pm today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director General U Khin Maung Htay of Myanma Radio and Television, Director-General U Chit Naing of Information and Public Relations Department, Managing Director U Tin Kha of News and Periodicals Enterprise, Managing Director Col Myint Thein of Printing and Publishing Enterprise, Managing Director U Bo Kyi of Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise and Adviser to the Minister U Kyaw Min.

(6) Deputy Prime Minister meets foreign visitor

YANGON, 26 June- Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Chairman of National Sports Committee Dr Phouthong Seng Akhom of Lao People's Democratic Republic at his office at 11 am today. They cordially discussed matters relating to sports and friendly relations between the two countries.


(7)  Minister meets Australian Ambassador

YANGON, 26 June - Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing met with Ambassador of Australia Mr Trevor Wilson at the Ministry of Home Affairs at the corner of Saya San and No 1 Industry Roads this afternoon. Also present on the occasion were Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, Director-General of Prisons Department U Kyaw Tun and Head of Office of the Ministry U Nyan Lin.


(8) Minister meets foreign visitors

YANGON, 26 June- Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein received General Manager Mr Hiroo Endo of Mitsui Marine and Fire Insurance Co Japan at 10 am today and General Manager Mr Maurie F Drew of Focus Energy Ltd, Australia at 11 am today at his office. They cordially discussed bilateral cooperation.  Also present was Governor U Kyaw Kyaw Maung of Central Bank Myanmar.

(9) Minister meets LPDR delegation

YANGON, 26 June- President of National Sports Committee of Laos and National Olympic Committee of Laos Dr Phouthong Seng Akhom called on Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint  his office this morning. Also present at the call were secretary-general of MOC Director- General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik and officials. They discussed exchange of visits of sports team and development of sports sector between the two countries.

(11) Myanmar-Laos boxing held

YANGON, 26 June-Under the arrangement of promoting mutual cooperation in and friendly relations sports sector between Myanmar-Laos, the Myanmar and Laos boxing friendly was held at National Indoor Stadium-l in Thuwunna this evening. Among the spectators were Chairmen of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Vice-Chairman of MOC Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, President of National Sports Committee of Laos and National Olympic Committee of Laos Dr Phouthong Seng Akhom and party, Ambassador of Lao PDR Mr Ly Bounkham and officials.  Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and Ambassador Mr Ly Bounkham greeted boxers.

In the matches, Yan Linn Aung of Myanmar beat Zay Ya Phone of Laos in the 45 kilo class. Kyaw Swa Aung of Myanmar beat Som Phane of Laos in the 48-kilo class. Aung Linn Tun beat Nilone Done of Laos in the 54-kilo class. Nay Zaw of Myanma beat Phputhone of Laos in the 57-kilo class. Bo Myin of Myanmar beat Phay Si Thong of Laos in the 60-kilo class. Aung Kyaw Kyaw of Myanmar beat Vivlavung of Laos in the 63.5-kilo class.

After the matches, Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, President of National Sports Committee of Laos and National Olympic Committee of Laos Dr Phouthong Seng Akhom, Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, President of Laos Amateur Boxing Federation Mr Udomsak Udom Thong Kasam, President of Myanmar Boxing Federation U Win Myint, Honourable President of Boxing Mr Vinay Inthavong and Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik presented prizes to the winners.

At 7 pm, the President of MBF hosted dinner at Western Park Restaurant in honour of boxers and officials.  The second boxing friendly will be held on 29 June afternoon.

(12) Delegation of Thai Staff College, Royal Thai Army arrives

YANGON, 26 June? Instructors and trainees of Thai Staff College, Royal Thai Army led by Col Apirat Sumantra arrived here by air this morning.

They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by General Staff Officer (Grade-I) Lt-Col Than Aye of the Office of Chief of Armed Forces Training and officers, Military Attache of Thailand Col Chaiwat Satondee and officials.

The Thai delegation visited Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road. Director of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute Col Ye Htut and officials conducted them round the museum. They then paid homage at the Shwedagon Pagoda and donated cash towards the fund of the pagoda.


(13) Cornerstone laid for new school building to mark 50th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Myanmar and PRC

YANGON, 26 June The cornerstone laying ceremony for a new two-storey building of No 2 Basic Education Primary School, Yankin, under No 3 Basic Education Department (Yangon City) of the Ministry of Education, donated by the People's Republic of China to mark the 50th Anniversary of Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Myanmar and PRC was held at the school, this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and U Myo Nyunt, Ambassador of the PRC Mr Liang Dong and members, the directors-general and the chairmen of departments and boards under ministry officials of No- 3 Basic Education Department (Yangon City), Yankin Township Education Officer, school heads, teachers, students and guests.

Minister for Education spoke words of thanks. Ambassador of the PRC Mr Liang Dong explained the purposes of the donations. Then, corner stone laying ceremony was held. Later, stone inscriptions were read by Chairman of Wanda Research Board Sayagyi U Khin Aung Bo.

Afterwards, Minister U Than Aung placed nine gems casket and then Minister U Than Aung, the deputy ministers, the ambassador of the PRC and director general laid cornerstones at the auspicious time, 9.30 am. Minister U Than Aung sprinkled scented water on cornerstones, gems casket and stone inscriptions.


(14) Myanmar Women's Day Work Committee meets

YANGON, 26 June-A coordination meeting to mark Myanmar' Women's Day which will fall on 3 July was held at Aung San Hall of Social Welfare Department on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 1 pm today, attended by Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe of Work Commit tee for marking Myanmar Women's Day and leaders and members of sub-committees.

Chairperson of the Work Committee Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe gave a speech and master of ceremonies Assistant Director Daw Khin Htar May of Social Welfare Department reported on arrangements for Myanmar Women's Day.

Participants then took part in the discussions and the meeting ended with the concluding remarks by the chairperson of the Work Committee.

(15) Voters of TadaU Township unanimously petitions for dissolving pessimist NLD

YANGON, 26 June-The voters from TadaU Township, Mandalay Division, expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolving it at four venues TadaU Basic Education High School, Myinthi Village BEMS, Chaunggwa Village BEHS and Theinnikan Village .BEMS in the township on 2 May.

A total of 16,032 people from 17 wards and Villagetract rallied at TadaU BEHS. On behalf of attendance's, representatives expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it, and presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Daw Ahmar.

A similarly was attended by 13,799 people 21 village-tracts at Myinthi Village BEMS. On behalf of the people, representatives expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it, and presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Kyaw Hsan Oo. Altogether 9,086 people from 14 village-tracts rallied at Chaunggwa Village BEHS. On behalf of the people, representatives expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it, and presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub commission U Thein Aung.

Similarly, 10,527 people from 12 Villagetract rallied at Theinni-kan Village BEMS.
On behalf of attendances, representatives expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it, and presented petitions signed by the people to Member of - ship Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Khin Maung Hla. There are 78,944 people, who vote in TadaU Township number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it, was 73,081 or 92.57 per cent of the voters.

(16) 11 Natogyi Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 26 June-Eleven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Natogyi Township, Mandalay Division. Eleven members of Natogyi Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Natogyi Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 13 March 2000 as they no longer wished to Participate in party politics.
