(1) Senior General Than Shwe inspects  Special Zone,  construction site and factory

YANGON, 19 June - Senior General Than Shwe inspected Yangon Division Vegetable Cultivation Special Zone in Hmawby Township and construction of Yangon-Ngahsudaung-Bago Expressway

The Senior General, accompanied by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister and Deputy minister and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments, went to Yangon Division Vegetable Cultivation Special Zone in Nyaunghnapinkwin in Hmawby Township at 9 am.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than reported on works of Vegetable Cultivation Special Zone undertaken by Yangon Division Peace and Development Council at the supervisory office of Vegetable Cultivation and Production Centre.

He said over 3,200 acres have been reclaimed as first phase for cultivation of vegetables. Later over 7,000 acres are, to be reclaimed in three special zones and they will be allotted to cultivators and organizations.

In his guidance, Senior General Than Shwe said as the region is designated as Yangon Division Vegetable Cultivation Special Zone, organization and those who have been given permits are 8 to reclaim the land. He spoke of the need for them to undertake cultivation of vegetables successfully.

The Senior General spoke of the need to give priority to better transport. The Senior General and party viewed the special zone from the watch tower. The Senior General and office for construction of Yangon-Ngahsudaung-Bago Expressway being undertaken by Development Affairs Department.

Yangon -Ngahsudaung-Bago Expressway starts from the crossroads of Yangon-Bago Highway and No 3 Highway and links Taikkyi-Bago, Road, passing Kya-kansu and Kya-in (East3 Villages through Ngahsudaung. Yangon-Ngahsudaung-Bago Expressway is being built in three sections Hsatthwataw Village to Kyakansu Village as section 1, from No 3 Highway to Kyakansu Village as section 2 and from Kyakansu Village, to Kya-in (East) Village Ngahsudaung, as section 3.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo gave supplementary report on construction of roads and cultivation. Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance.

The Senior General and party inspected vegetable patches of the Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs. The Senior General and party inspected construction of the road at the crossroad of Yangon-Bago Highway and No 3 Highway. Senior General Than Shwe inspected maintenance of No 3 Highway and construction of No 7 Highway or circular road to be linked with Nos 4, 1, 2 and 3 Highways. The Senior General and party; left for Yangon at noon.


(2) Monywa-Ahlon- Yaeyi -Kalaywa Road will become shortest road linking Sagaing Division and Chin state

YANGON, I9 June -Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party, accompanied by Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, left Mandalay in a motorcade on June 18 morning and arrived at Thaphanseik Dam Multi-purpose Project in Kyunhla Township, Sagaing Division, at 8.20 am the same day. In the briefing hall, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin reported to Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party on facts about Thaphanseik Dam Multi-purpose Project, progress of work, and expansion of sown acreage on completion of the project, Director U Maung Maung Tin of ID on progress of work, work improvement in cooperation with MEPE and future plans, and Minister for Electric Power Maj- Gen Tin Htut on facts about hydel power project of Thaphanseik Dam and progress of work.

Then, Project Director U Aung Koe Shwe of MEPE reported to the Secretary-l and party on laying of steel pipeline, intake structure, construction of hydel power plant, work being carried out in cooperation with ID and plans for generation and supply of electric power.

The Secretary-l gave instructions on timely completion of the project and cooperation in harmony between the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and Ministry of Electric Power through concerted efforts of officials concerned. Afterwards, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented fruit baskets to Chinese technicians, service personnel of ID and MEPE.

Later, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, and party inspected laying of pipeline and construction of hydel power plant. Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected construction of the main dam of Thaphanseik Multi-purpose Dam Project, water storage of Kindat Diversion Wier and availability of rain water for cultivation tasks in Sagaing Division.

Thaphanseik Multi-purpose Dam Project is located in Thaphanseik Village, Kyunhla Township, Sagaing Division, and it is an earth dam, 22,587 feet long 108 and 108 feet high. Catchment area of the dam is 3,460 square miles and it can store the maximum 2,880,000 acres feet and the minimum 370,000 acres feet. Three 10-megawatt generators will be installed for power generation.

The dam is scheduled to irrigate 150,000 acres of land through. Kindat Diversion Weir nine miles away from Thaphanseik Dam. The Dam is being built to irrigate 350,000 acres of Kaboe Dam area and to generate average of 117.2 kilo-watt hours a year. A ceremony to open the multimedia teaching centre of No 2 Basic Education High School, Monywa, was held at the school at I pm on 18 June, with an address by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Then, Headmistress Daw Tin Shwe and member of the School Board of Trustees U Mar Kyaw formally opened the multimedia teaching centre.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt unveiled the signboard. The Secretary-l and party inspected the different sectors of the centre. Tin Win Tun Company presented K 6.5 million to No 1 BEHS, Ahlon BEHS, Monywa. Private banks in Monywa presented K 1.2 million, local people K I million, 20 well-wishers including K 500,000 by U Kaung Nyunt and Daw Myint Myint Than K 5.1 million.

In accord with the education promotion programmes, multimedia teaching centres are being opened at schools in the entire nation to have access to international level education and all-round progress for students.

At Chindwin -Bridge (Monywa) Project, the Secretary-l and party inspected the soil condition of the surrounding areas, the water cur- rent of the river and selection of the axis.

Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun reported on selection of the site to build the bridge, finding of the axis, soil condition and construction of Monywa-Ahlon-Yagyi- Kalaywa Road, Commander Maj-Gen Soe Win on progress in building the 120-mile long Monywa-Ahlon-Yagyi- Kalaywa Road, extension of the road to become a four-lane highway and bridges  to be built along the road.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said completion of the road and the bridge will cut 40 miles in travelling distance between Monywa and Kalaywa Sixty villages along the road will also gain social economic progress. The road will also ensure direct link to Pathein-Monywa Road from regions west of Chindwin.

Monywa-Ahlon-Yagyi-Kalaywa Road will become shortest and linking Sagaing Division and Chin State, thus helping to develop and strengthen unity of all the national races including Nagas of Chin State. As the road will become the shortest link to the border with India it will also help develop border trade and the national economy.  The bridge will link Mindaunk village, Monywa Township, on the east bank and Letkokpin village, Hsalingyi Township on the west bank on Chindwin River.

At Letkokpin village on the west bank, the Secretary-1 and party inspected construction of the road to become a four-lane highway. Officials reported on progress in building the road. The Secretary-l gave suggestions. The Secretary-l and party inspected progress in implementing meeting the project. They arrived back Mandalay in the evening. Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein inspected a 200 bed hospital in Monywa.


(3) Deputy Minister for Home Affairs meets guests from India

YANGON, 19 June- Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung met a five member delegation led by Guru Ramsin of India who will be engaged in research in Myanmar at the office at the corner of Saya San Road and Industry-l Road at 10 am today. Also present at the call were Police Maj-Gen Soe Win of Myanmar Police Force, Director-General U Aung Thein and officials.


(4)  Deputy Prime Minister receives Ambassador of Israel

YANGON, 1 9 June-On behalf of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun received Ambassador of Israel to the Union of Myanmar Mr Gad Nathan who has completed his tour of duty in Myanmar at the Ministry of Defence at 9.30 am today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.


(5)  Minister meets foreign visitors

YANGON, 19 June-Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung met Managing Director Mr Walter Herter of Sulzer Technology Corporation Thailand Office and party at his office at 3 pm today.  Similarly, the minister met Deputy General Manager Mr He Chuan Chen of China Yunnan Corporation for International Technoeconomic Cooperation and party accompanied by Economic and Commercial Counsellor Mr Jin Hunggen of Chinese Embassy at 4 pm today. Also present were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry.

YANGON, l 9 June-Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin met Manager Mr Lin Kuei Chao of Noble Land Co Ltd and party at his office at 10.30 am today. Also present at the call were General Manager U Tha Oo of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications and officials.


(7) Minister for Commerce meets exporters

YANGON, 19 June-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met exporters at meeting hall of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading on Pansodan Street this afternoon.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, Director General of Directorate of Trade U Nyunt Aye and officials of 53 local and foreign companies.


(8) Minister inspects Shwedaung Textile and Finishing Factory, Thayawady Ceramics Factory

YANGON, 19 June- Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, accompanied by departmental officials, met officials of Shwedaung Advanced Textile and Finishing Factory yesterday.

Factory Manager Lt-Col Soe Hlaing, Managing Director Col Oo Thein Maung of Myanma Textile Industries and General Manager U Saw Win reported on production, distribution, storage of spare parts and repair work. Minister U Aung Thaung gave instructions on work and inspected cultivation of corn in the compound of the factory, site for construction of the dispensary, fire engines and warehouse of the factory. At Thayawady Ceramics Factory, the minister inspected production and repair work of the factory.

This morning, the minister attended the opening ceremony of Electrician Course (Grade-II) of Industrial Coordination and Inspection Department on Kyaikwaing Pagoda Road in Mayangon Township. Also present were Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Thein Tun and Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, officials and trainees. Altogether 68 trainees are attending the five-week course.


(9) Minister inspects cooperative activities in Mandalay Division

YANGON, 19 June-Hailing the International Cooperative Day, a ceremony to open Nantheingi Textile Factory of Shwe Myanmar Aung General Economic Cooperative Ltd was held at the factory in Amarapura Township yesterday.

Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Director of Mandalay Division Cooperative Department U Aung Pru and Chairman of the Cooperative  Ltd U Thein Win formally opened the factory. In the meeting hall, the minister met officials and members of Board of Directors of the Cooperative Ltd.

In the afternoon, the minister fulfilled the requirements of Yadana Myay Mable Sculpture Production Cooperative Society in Sakyin Village, Madaya Township.


(10) Facsimile Operator training Course, PO Clerk Refresher Course open

YANGON, 19 June- A ceremony to open Facsimile Operator Training Course and PO Clerk Refresher Course was held at Communications and Postal Training Centre of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications this morning.

Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin attended the ceremony and gave a speech. Also present on the occasion were the Director-General of Directorate of Telecommunications, officials of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications, the Principal and instructors.


(11) Minister attends Seminar on Translation

YANGON, 19 June- A ceremony to open the Seminar on Translation, organized by Sarpay Beikman of Printing and Publishing Enterprise, was held at Sorrento Villa, Sarpay Beikman Press, on Pyay Road, this afternoon, with an address by Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung.

First, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung gave an opening speech. After the opening ceremony, the seminar began. Writer U Than Htut (Taik Soe), writer U Hla Kyaing (Paragu) and Chief Editor of Sarpay Beikman U Win Pe ( Monywa Win Pe) presided over the seminar. Afterwards, the resource persons answered the queries. The seminar continues tomorrow.


(12) Health and Welfare Work Committee of MWJA Central Body holds a coord meeting

YANGON, 19 June- Health and Welfare Work Committee of the Central Body of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association held a coordination meeting at MWJA building this afternoon.

Also present were Chairman of the Work Committee Dr Tin Shwe (Sayawun Tin Shwe), Secretary U Soe Aung (Soe Aung/Institute of Traditional Medicine) and officials.

Secretary U Soe Aung (Soe Aung/institute of Traditional Medicine) reported on arrangements for taking health care of MWJA Central Body members.

Those present took part in the discussions. After the meeting, officials went to hostels in Kyaikkasan Ground and looked into accommodation for the officials of medical service and opening the shops.


(13) Myanmar delegation back from Geneva

YANGON, 19 June- Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe arrived back here by air yesterday evening. The delegation attended the 88th Session of Intentional Labour Conference held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 30 May to 15 June.

Members of the delegation were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Communications Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, departmental officials and families.


(14)  21 Shwedaung Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 19 June-Twenty-one members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Shwedaung Township, Bago Division.

Twenty-one members of Shwedaung Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Shwedaung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 2 June 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.


(15) Illegal drug possessors get Five years

YANGON, 19 June-The Muse Township Court handed down a sentence of five years' imprisonment on a drug possessor on 18 February 1999. Members of Muse Township Police Force searched Sai Sin Weit, 36, of Muse Township at 4 pm on 6 January 1999 and found 0.00001 kg of heroin on him. Action was taken against him in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Sub-stances Law. The court handed down five years' imprisonment on him under Section 16 (C) of the Law.
