(1) Secretary-1 enshrines relics in Sandadawpyi Pagoda of Minkyaung Sarthintaik in MyingyanYANGON, 18 June-The enshrinement ceremony of Sandadawpyi Pagoda at Minkyaung Sarthintaik in Myingyan, Mandalay Division, was held at the pagoda at 9.45 am yesterday, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party received the Nine Precepts from Mingun Hill Dhamma Nada Kyaung Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Kitti. Members of the Sangha Myingyan Minkyaung Sarthintaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Nandiya explained the purpose of construction of the pagoda in accord with the wishes of Mingun Tipitaka Sayadawgyi.
Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented Patima Buddha images to be enshrined in the pagoda and alms. The ministers and the deputy ministers also donated alms to members of the Sangha.
Well-wishers donated cash to Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt for the pagoda. Secretary- 1 Lt Gen Khin Nyunt who presented certificates of honour to the donors.
Tipitaka Kovida Bhadanta Silakkhandabhivamsa of Moemeik Hill Tipitakanikaya Kyaungtaik delivered a sermon. Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt conveyed a Patima Buddha image and Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, the ministers, the deputy ministers, members of Pagoda Board of Trustees, Upahtaka Committee Patima Buddha images to the reliquary. At the auspicious time, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt enshrined the Patima Buddha image in the reliquary. The Commander, the ministers, the deputy ministers and officials also enshrined Patima Buddha images in the reliquary.
Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party sprinkled scented water on the religious objects and relics. After the ceremony, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt performed the rituals of golden and silver showers.
(2) Secretary-l attends cash donation ceremony of Tipitaka Sandavasa Monastery
YANGON, 18 June-A ceremony to donate cash for construction of Tipitaka Sandavasa Monastery and to drive stakes for two-storey Dhammayon was held at Madaya Kyaungtaik in Aungmyethazan Township in Mandalay Division on 17 June, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
The congregation received the Five Precepts from Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Agga Maha Pandita Yesagyo Sayadaw Bhaddanta Vayamindabhivamsa. The Sayadaw delivered a sermon. Members of the Sangha recited Parittas.
The Secretary-l and party presented offertories to members of the Sangha. The Secretary-l accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to the well-wishers.
Yesagyo Sayadaw Bhaddanta Vayamindabhivamsa delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained. Then, a ceremony to drive stakes for two-storey Dhammayon was held. First, the Secretary-l and party took their designated places. After the ceremony, the Secretary-l and party performed the rituals of silver and golden showers.
Later, the Secretary-1 and party, accompanied by Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, arrived in Myingyan. On June 17 morning, the Secretary-1 attended the enshrinement of Sandadawpyi Pagoda in Mingyaung Minkyaung Sarthintaik in Myingyan and presented offertories to members of the Sangha and then enshrined the relics in the reliquary of Pagoda. In Manikinsana Hall in Myingyan, the Secretary-l met with members of Myingyan District Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental officials, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and social organizations.
The Secretary-l said he was in Myingyan to attend enshrinement of relics in Sandadawpyi Pagoda built in accord with the wish of Mingun Sayadaw and fulfilled the requirements of development of Myingyan District.
The Secretary-l then took part in the discussions. Officials of Myanma Railways reported on conveying of Marble Buddha Image by the special train. The Secretary-l and party went to the place where Marble Buddha Image is being carved. Sculptor U Aung Thwin of Myanmar Traditional Artists and Artisans
Asiayon reported on carving ; with the use of modern techniques. The Secretary-l and party inspected carving of Marble Buddha Image and arrangements for conveying Marble Buddha Image from Sakyintaung to Chaungmagyi jetty. The Secretary-1 and party arrived back Mandalay in the evening.
The Secretary-l and party paid obeisance to Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Rajadhammabhivamsa of Masoeyein Taikthit Dhammadipati Kyaung in Mandalay and presented alms to the Sayadaw.
Then, the Secretary-l and party also paid obeisance to Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Nayaka of Masoeyein Taikthit Dharnmathitala Kyaung. Afterwards, the Secretary-l asked about the health of Bhaddanta Nayaka and presented medicines to the Sayadaw.
The Secretary-l and party arrived in PhaungdawU Parahita Monastic Education School in Dawnabwa Ward, Aungmyaythazan Township and inspected construction of three-storey building at the school.
Then, the Secretary-l and party paid obeisance to Bhaddanta Nayaka and Bhaddanta Jotika of Yadana Theinkyaung and presented offertories to the Sayadaws. The Secretary-l attended to the requirements for the construction of three-storey building. Then, the Secretary-l and party paid obeisance to Yaydaw Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannavamsa.The Secretary- 1 and party inspected preparation for Htidaw hoisting ceremony of Maha Muni Yokeshindawmyat.
The Secretary-l inspected ; relics of Maha Muni Yokeshindawmyat. Then, the Secretary-l signed in the visitors' book and made a donation for the pagoda funds. The Secretary-l and party then spent the night at the Nanmyo Guest house.
(3) Secretary-2 inspects agricultural and livestock breeding works in Htantabin Hlinethaya, Hlegu Townships
YANGON, 18 June-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, accompanied by Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and officials, left here for Htantabin Township at 8 am today and proceeded to Anyasu Village of the township.
The Secretary-2 and party inspected digging of Tama10 canal to prevent erosion of Yangon-Nyaungdon Road and land slides at Anyasu and Katwe villages.
Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and the Director of Yangon Division Irrigation Department reported on preventive measures against erosion. The Secretary-2 urged the officials to undertake the tasks seriously.
Then, the Secretary-2 inspected the dredger and cordially met officials and employees. Under the arrangement of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, Irrigation Department and Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems are digging Tamalo Canal by the dredger to turn it into a 400 feet wide and 30 feet deep canal.
At 9.15 am, the Secretary-2 and party left Anyasu Village in Htantabin Township for Hlinethaya Town ship and inspected the embankment and paddy cultivation of a farmer near Yangon-Nyaungdon Road in Hlinethaya Township.
At Hlegu Township, the Secretary-2 and party went to the cultivated land of No 11 Light Infantry Division in Barlar region near No 3 Highway where they were welcomed by Commander of No 11 LID Brig-Gen Myint Swe, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Vice-Quartermasters -General Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and officials.
Then, the Commander reported on conditions of Barlar area. Afterwards, the Secretary-2 said that the land of Barlar area near No 3 Highway being reclaimed by No 11 LID is not wetland area. Due to rain water and tide, the land was inundated and it can be turned into cultivated acreage of both summer and monsoon paddy through proper drainage system to achieve good yield. Hence, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation is to draw up projects for turning 4,000 acres of land in Barlar and Yetalabaung regions into cultivable land in the long-term interest, the Secretary-2 stressed.
Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party arrived at Wanetkone Village in Hlegu Township afternoon.
Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo observed the and preparation and ploughing with the use of farm equipment provided by Agricultural Mechanization Department. The Secretary-2 and party also inspected breeding of broiler finisher at other local battalions.
Then, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party inspected perennial, seasonal and kitchen crops plantation, breeding of fish and vegetables shop at the battalion.
Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo went to Yemon in Hlegu Township and inspected nursery, vegetables and meat shop of No 11 Light Infantry Division near Yangon-Bago road.
(4) Ambassador U Linn Myaing accredited to Belgium
YANGON, 19 June-The Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar has appointed U Linn Myaing, Ambassador Extraordinary and plenipotentiary Union or Myanmar to the French Republic, concurrently as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Kingdom of Belgium.
(5) Minister inspects Cement Plants, Soft Drinks and Ice Factory, Textile and Finishing Factory
YANGON, 18 June - Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, accompanied by Managing Director U Than Shwe of Myanma Ceramics Industries and departmental officials, arrived at Thayet Cement Plant in Magway Division on 16 June evening.
The minister inspected the filter being jointly built by Myanma Ceramics Industries and Yunnan Machinery and Equipment Import & Export Corporation of the People's Republic of China and installation of multicyclone, air seal, tyres and shells and girth gear and pinion at the plant.
Then, the minister inspected major repair for No 2 Kiln which can produce 200 tons of cement a day, the grinding machine, No 2 Grinding Machine which can grind 32 tons an hour and the control room for new kiln.
On 17 June, the minister also inspected engineering and civil tasks and installation of conveyers and other equipment and gave instructions on work to be undertaken according to schedule and inspection matters. Afterwards, the minister met officials. General Manager U Aye Mauk of MCI and Factory Manager U Tin Aung reported on implementation of tasks and future tasks. Managing director U Than Shwe gave supplementary reports.
Then, the minister arrived at Shwedaung Advanced Textile and Finishing Factory. The minister met officials and gave instructions on cultivation of vegetables in vacant land of the factory and boosting production of the factory.
(6) Minister inspects Central Fire Services Training School in PyinOoLwin
YANGON, 18 June-Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa inspected the construction site of main building of Central Fire Services Training School in PyinOoLwin Township on 16 June.
Engineer in-charge U San Kyu reported on construction of the building. Then, the minister inspected the site for construction of the tower and training buildings and staff quarters and met staff families.
Afterwards, the minister also inspected pig farm and poultry farms in the compound of the school, arrangements for breeding more 5,000 chickens, cultivation of vegetables and planting of perennial trees.
The minister gave necessary instruction .
YANGON, 18 June-A seminar on tuberculosis was held today at the Hotel Equatorial here, attended by TB specialists and practitioners. Dr K C Mohanty from India delivered an address. He said Tuberculosis is the No I health problem of the world and with the advent of HIV it has assumed an epidemic proportions. Globally 4 million deaths occur every year and 8 million new cases are added each year. Southeast Asia contributes 40 per cent of Tuberculosis of the world. DOTS (direct observation therapy system) programme was introduced in 1991. Even 6-month short course Chemotherapy and DOTS has not been able to overcome this. The solution is to use multiple drug And-TB fixed dose combination of Rifampion, Isoniazid, Pyrazinnamite and Ethambutol provided it is bioavailable. Success rate was much better with fixed dose combinations.
(8) Drug possessor gets 5 years
Yangon, 18 June- Members of Bahan Township MPF seized 0.0001 kg of heroin from Kyi Wai, 35, son of U Thaung, Sein Metta Street, Thathana Yeiktha Ward, on 11 April 1998. He was sentenced to 3 Years' imprisonment under Section 15 and to five years' imprisonment under Section 16 (C) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law on 26 February 1999 by Bahan Township Court.
(9) 1.3 million stimulant tablets seized in Kengtung
YANGON, 18 June-Acting on information, a combined team comprising local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, at the Naungnoon toll gate in Kengtung Township, Shan State (East), on 4 June, searched a Hino bus with number plate Ba/6129 with Salai Hsan Noe Htawng, son of U Tint Lwin, of Pha-htaul Ward, Phalan Township, Chin State, at the wheel, and Zaw Min Aung son of U Bo Ni, of Hsalauk Village, Seikphyu Township, as a partner, and seized 1.3 million stimulant tablets bearing the words "WY".
Further investigation revealed that the stimulant tablets belonged to Sunday, son of U Ngon Hoke, of Naungkhaik Region, Ward 3, Kengtung Township who was then arrested. Action was taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
(10) 20 Pyay NLD members resign of own accord
YANGON, 18 June-Twenty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pyay Township, Bago Division. Twenty members of Pyay Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pyay Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 5 November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
