(1)  General Maung Aye tours Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, stops over at Danang in SRV

YANGON, 14 June - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and Myanmar goodwill delegation visited Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong in the People's Republic of China from 9 to 12 June.

The General and delegation left Beijing for Shanghai by Air China at 8.45 am local time. On arrival at Hongqiao International Airport in Shanghai at 10.20, the General and delegation were welcomed by Deputy Director General Mr Yang Guoquiang of Foreign Affairs Office, Shanghai Municipal People's Government and officials.

General Maung Aye, Daw Mya Mya San and de legation proceeded to Regal International East Asia Hotel where they would stay.

The General and delegation left the hotel in a motorcade at 1.50 pm for Lu Jia Zui Development Group Co Ltd. Deputy Director Mr Ruan Yanhu'a of Pudong Region Management Board of Shanghai explained efforts being made to develop the Pudong Region beginning 1990 and current developments with audio-visual aids. General Maung Aye expressed thanks.

During their visit to Shanghai Bell Company, the General and delegation heard a report on functions of the company presented by Chair- man of Shanghai Bell Company Mr Xi Guo Hua in detail. After visiting the factory of the company, General Maung Aye signed in the visitors' book. General Maung Aye and Mr Xi Guo Hua exchanged gifts.

At 4 pm, the General and delegation' visited Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre where they studied the situation of Shanghai in the past, city development undertakings, plans for the future Shanghai and the scale model of Shanghai Municipal Construction Planning. The General and delegation then went back to the hotel where they were staying.

General Maung Aye, Daw Mya Mya San and delegation attended dinner hosted by Executive Vice-Mayor of Shanghai Mr Chen Liangyu at the International Convention Centre at 7 pm.

After the dinner, General Maung Aye, wife Daw Mya Mya San and members visited Pudong region and observed Huang Pu River and its environs. They spent the night at the hotel. On 10 June, General Maung Aye, wife Daw Mya Mya San and members left Hong Chong International Airport in Shanghai for Shenzhen and arrived there at 10.50 am.

General Maung Aye, wife Daw Mya Mya San and members were welcomed by officials, Counsel-General U Hla Than of Consulate-General in Hong Kong and officials. They went to Wuzhou Guest House.

General Maung Aye and party visited Konka Group Co Ltd where Vice-Chairman Mr Chen Xu Ri reported on production of TV sets, video cassette players, refrigerators and hand phones. General Maung Aye and party observed production of TV sets. General Maung Aye and party visited ZTE Corporation, a telephone Co, where the y were welcomed by Chairman Mr Hou Wei Gui. Officials reported on functions of the company and documentary photos.

On 12 June, General Maung Aye and party left for Chel Lap Kok International Airport. General Maung Aye and party left Hong Kong at 1.30 pm and stopped over at Sanbay Quocte Danang International Airport in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. They were welcomed by Vice- Chairman of People's Committee of Danang City Mr Hoang Tuan Anh, Directorate of Danang Foreign Affairs Mr Ngo Quang
Vinh, Charge 'd Affaires ai of Myanmar Embassy U Tint Swe, Military Attache Brig-Gen Myo Tin and wife Daw Helen Lun Pon and officials.

General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and members met Vice-Chairman of People' s Committee of Danang City Mr Hoang Tuan Anh at special lounge. They exchanged gifts. General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and members arrived back at Yangon in the evening. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla received Vice-President of Boasteel Group International Trade Corporation Shanghai Mr Xia Jiang at Regal International East Asia Hotel. They discussed purchased of Billets and slabs.

On 12 June, Lt-Gen Tin Hla received Chairman and President of Hong Kong Association of International Investment if Join Wisdom Investment td Mr Hui Chiniing and officials and they discussed construction of pharmaceutical factory in joint venture with Myanma Economic Corporation and establishment of modern hospital. Minister for Agriculture and irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin met Mrs Elizabeth Gong of Genesis Trading Ltd and party. They discussed  matters on rice, cotton, beans and pulses, coffee and sugar.

On 12 June, Minister U Aung Thaung and Minister Brig-Gen Win Tin met Managing Director Mr Cany Fok of Hutchison Whampoa Co and Managing Director of Hutchison Telecom Mr Choo.

They discussed establishment of advanced communication system, development of Thilawa Port and investment in other economic fields. On 11 June, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung and Minister for Live stock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein met officials of June Asia Co and BTL Co that signed contract with Myanma Radio and Television. They discussed matters on installation of equipment for data broadcast system and transport in cooperation with the Ministry of
Information and Ministry of Education .

On 12 June, Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein visited Garming Marine Products Factory in Hong Kong and discussed prospects of investment with Mr Thomas of the factory.

The minister observed 10,000-ton cold storage and fish and prawn market. Chairman of MIC Minister U Thaung, Vice Chairman of MIC Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut and Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Chairman of Web Pool Management Ltd Mr Li Wan Chen and discussed construction of electric power station in Myanmar and fertilizer factory on 11 June.

Chairman of MIC Minister U Thaung, Vice Chairman of MIC Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut and Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin discussed establishment of small industries and investment in services with a delegation led by Mr Richard Yin of Kingsway Group on 12 June.

YANGON, 14 June-Mitsui Marine and Fire Insurance Co Ltd of Japan-donated computer and multi-media teaching aids for Nationalities Youth Resources Development Degree Colleges of Education and Training Department of the Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs at a ceremony held at Dekkhina Hall of Tiger Parahita Training School for Development of Nation
Races on Kamayut Station Road in Hline Township this morning, attended by Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Deputy Director-General of Education and Training Department U Tin Win explained donation of computers and teaching aids by Mitsui Marine and Fire Insurance Co Ltd for Nationalities Youth Resources Development Degree Colleges and construction of two two-storey buildings donated by Department for Development of Border Areas and National Races for Basic Education High School No 1 in Hline Township.

Then, Managing Director of Mitsui Marine and Fire Insurance Co Ltd Mr Ken Taki explained the purpose of the donation.

Ambassador of Japan Mr Shigeru Tsumori extended greetings. Managing Director of Mitsui Marine and Fire Insurance Co Ltd Mr Ken Taki presented related documents of 56 computers and teaching aids worth five million yen to Director-General of Department for Development of Border Areas and National Races Col Than Swe.

Afterwards, Director General Col Than Swe presented related documents of two two-storey buildings to Director-General of Education Planning and Training Department U Bo Win for BEHS No 1 in Hline Township.

Daw Cho Cho Thingalay who are serving in NHK (World Radio Japan), and family donated (Yan 25,000) for National Races Development Tiger Parahita Training School to Director-General Col Than Swe. After the ceremony, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected installation of computers, multimedia teaching aids donated by Mitsui Maine and Fire Insurance Co Ltd in the classrooms and mechanical
workshop. Director-General of Department for Development of Border Areas and National Races Col Than Swe and Director-General of Education Planning and Training Department U Bo Win formally opened the two two-storey buildings. Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected the buildings.


(3) Secretary-l meets officials of Federation of Thai Industries (Kanchanaburi)

YANGON, 14 June-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met officials of the Federation of Thai Industries (Kanchanaburi) led by General Chatter Thanajaryo (Retted) at the guest house of the Ministry of Defence this evening. Also present at the call were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, Director- General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Theta, Director-General of Political Department U Nyunt Maung Shein and Ambassador of Thailand to the Union of Myanmar Mr Pens Chalarak.


(4) Secretary-1 attends dinner hosted by Federation of Thai Industries (Kanchanaburi)

YANGON, 14 June-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the dinner hosted by the Federation of Thai Industries (Kanchanaburi) led by General Chetta Thanajaryo (Retd) at Kandawgyi Palace Hotel at 7 pm today.

Also present at the dinner were Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Member of the ministers, the deputy ministers, Ambassador of Thailand Mr Pensak Chalarak, heads of departments and invited guests.

(5)  Minister meets guests from Singapore

YANGON, 14 June-Minister for cooperatives U Aung San met a delegation led by Senior Executive  President Mr S K Saboo of Swiss Singapore Overseas Enterprises Pte Ltd at his office at 2 pm today.  Also present on the occasion were Director-General U Maung Hti and officials of ministry.


(6) Minister meets foreign visitors

YANGON, 14 June-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met an economic delegation of Malaysia  led by Mr Tan Sri Dato' Soong Siew Hoong at his office at 5 pm today. Gen Pyi Sone met President of  Myanmar Swiss Singapore Company Ltd Mr P K Jain and party at his office at 4.30 pm today

Also present at the calls were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, Director General U Nyunt Aye of  Directorate of Trade, Director General Col Nay Win of Border Trade Department and officials.


(7) Minister meets Ambassador of Israel

YANGON, 14 June-Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin met Ambassador of Israel  Mr Gad Nathan, who had completed his tour of duty, at his office at 5 pm today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister U Ohn Myint, heads and officials of departments and  enterprises concerned.

(8) Chinese Movie Week begins

YANGON, 14 June-Chinese Movie Week in celebration of the golden jubilee of diplomatic relations  between -China and Myanmar opened at National Theatre this evening.

Present were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung,  Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Deputy Minister for  information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Ambassador of PRC Mr Liang Dong, diplomats of foreign missions, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry
of Information and the Ministry of Culture and the audience totalling 1,000. The movie week was cosponsored by the Ministry of Information and the Ministry of Culture of Myanmar and the PRC Embassy in Yangon. Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Mr Liang Done said- Chinese films will be shown at National Theatre from 14 to 19 June and at Shwepyitha Theatre from 15 to 17 June.


(9) Dams built in western Bago Division to prevent floods and water shortages Thekaw Dam in Letpadan Township launched

YANGON, 14 June - Thekaw Dam in Letpadan Township, Thayawady District, Bago Division, which is the 110th irrigation facility of the nation, was commissioned into service today.

The dam 76 feet high and 8,320 feet long will irrigate 12,000 acres through its 8-mile-long main feeder canal and distributor canals with a total length of 33 miles. Irrigation Department built the facility at a cost of K 810 million. The project started in fiscal 1999-2000.

Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo said the government is giving priority to building of small and medium dams region-wise. Thekaw Dam is included in the irrigation project which covers building of dams and diversion weirs on the tributaries of Ayeyawady and Myitmakha rivers in the west of Bago Yoma.

Built on Thekaw Creek in Letpadan Township, the dam will irrigate 12,000 acres. Including Thekaw Dam, 25 irrigation facilities have been opened in Bago Division alone since 1988. Irrigation facilities under construction at present are Yenwe, Baingda, Bawni, Kawliya, Kutinbilin, Minhla and Swachaung dams.

Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye said Bago Division put 2.3 million acres under monsoon paddy last year, which is the record monsoon paddy sown acreage of the division. Plans are under way to extend monsoon paddy sown acreage of the division to reach three million acres within the next three years.

Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin said of the 45 million acres of cultivable land in the nation, only 23 million acres are put under crops. More dams are being built to effectively utilize the remaining cultivable land.

Chairman of Bago Division (Western Branch)  Peace and Development Council Col Phone Swe, Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung also gave speeches. Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin presented bonus to the staff of the project through their representatives.

The minister then unveiled the plaque marking the inauguration of the dam. Director of MD U Khin Zaw formally launched the dam.

Deputy Minister for Accompanied by the commander and officials, the Secretary-2 and party inspected the land reclamation project of Thein Shwe Family Exports Enterprise on Minhla- Moenyo Road.

Col Phone Swe reported on progress in reclamation of land by nine private companies in the western branch of Bago Division, officials of the company on cultivation of crops on 1,300 acres of that project and cooperation with local farmers who peasants on requirements.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Deputy Minister U Tint Swe and officials gave suggestions.


(10) Health Care Leadership and Management Course ends

YANGON, 14 June - Health Care Leadership and Management Course 2/2000 of the Health Department of the Ministry of Health concluded this morning at the Health Staff Training School in Dagon Township, addressed by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein said trainees have studied the State's health policies, upgrading of health care services to meet the international standard, disease control, public health  care and new ideas at the course. The minister then elaborated on the ministry's implementation of the health plans with the participation of the people.

As it was stated in integrated approach to total quality management in health care and continuous quality improvement which were lectured at the course, that treatment and public health services are needed to develop harmoniously. He then presented gifts to the outstanding trainees and certificates to all trainees.

(11) UMFCCI officials meet ACCCIM officials

YANGON, 14 June-A 21 member trade mission from the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) arrived here yesterday morning and was welcomed at the airport by President U Win Myint, Vice-President U Htein Win and Secretary-General U Zaw Min Win, Central Executive Committee members and officials of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce
and Industry (UMFCCI). A meeting was held at No 504/506, Merchant Street at 2.30 pm yesterday, attended by Vice-Presidents U Htein Win and U Win Aung, Secretary-General U Zaw Min Win, central executive committee members, representatives and entrepreneurs.


(12) 0.112 kg of heroin seized in Kutkai Township

YANGON, 14 June A combined team comprising local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched the house or Ma Yan Wun Shu, daughter of U Yan Min Kwe, of Yanluchaung Village, Tamoenye' Village tract, Kutkai Township, Shan State (North), on 7 June, and found 0.112 kg of heroin in 8 soap boxes hidden under a bed in her possession. Action is being taken against her under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(13) Illegal drug possessor gets five years

YANGON, 14 June-The Namtu Township Court handed down a sentence of five years' imprisonment on a drug possessor on 5 February 1999.  Members of Namtu Township Police Force searched Naw Kham, 32, of Khomeik Village, Namtu Township at 4 pm on 26 November 1998 and found 0.002177 kg of raw
opium on him. Action was taken against him in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The court handed down three years' imprisonment under Section 15 and five years' imprisonment under Section 16 (C) on him to serve concurrently.


(14) 35 NLD members resign of own accord in Rathedaung

YANGON, 14 June-Thirty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Uga Villagetract, Rathedaung Township, Rakhine State. Thirty-five members of Rathedaung Township NLD, Rakhine State, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Rathedaung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 29 May 2000 as
they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
