(1) General Maung Aye meets President Mr Jiang ZeminYANGON, 13 June - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council General Maung Aye, who was on a goodwill visit to China at the invitation of Vice-President of the People Republic of China Mr Hu Jintao, paid a courtesy call on President of PRC Mr Jiang Zemin in the Eastern Hall of the Great Hall of the People in Beijing at 3.30 pm on 7 June.
Also present together with General Maung Aye were Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, and officials. Together with President Mr Jiang Zemin were Vice- Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Yang Wen Chang, PSO to the President Mr Qian Yong Qiu and high-level officials.
The meeting ended at 4.10 pm. General Maung Aye and delegation went back to the State Guesthouse in a motorcade.
At 9.40 am on 7 June, the General and wife and party left the State Guesthouse for the power-tiller factory of Beijing Fu Tian Automobile Co Ltd in Chongwen District by car. In the briefing hall, General Manager Mr Huang He Ling and Factory Manager Mr Fe Hui reported on construction of the factory, distributive and arrangements for production of small cars.
Then, the General and wife and party looked into production of power-tillers and demonstration of the tillers. At 11 am, the General and wife and party went back to the State Guesthouse. On 7 June noon, the General and wife and party attended the 50th Anniversary of Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China-Myanmar sponsored by Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries at the Capital Hotel in Beijing.
At. the ceremony, Vice-Chairman Mr Chen Haosu and Ambassador U Ba Htay Chit extended greetings. Then; the General and the Vice-Chairman of. Standing Committee of National People' s Congress formally opened the sign-board which was stack special envelopes with stamps to mark the 50th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Myanmar.
Chairman of China National Philatelic Corporation Mr Niu Sujuan presented special envelopes to General Maung Aye. Afterwards, Chinese girls presented songs of China and Myanmar to the audience. After the ceremony, the General and wife and party went back to the State guest house.
At 8.10 am on 8 June, the General and wife and party visited the ancient tomb of Ming Dynasty over 40 kilo- metres north of Beijing. Officials conducted the General and wife and party round the tomb. The General and wife and party also visited room No 1 and 2 of the Museum and looked round the documents of the Court and the souvenir shops.
Next, they returned to the State Guesthouse in Beijing. After visiting the tomb of Ming Dynasty, member of the delegation Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and wife Daw Khin Cho Oo, together with officials, visited the Great Wall.
General Maung Aye and party called on Prime Minister Mr Zhu Rongji at the latter' s office at 4 pm on 8 June.
On 8 June evening, the General and wife and party attended a reception to mark the 50th anniversary establishment of diplomatic relations between China-Myanmar organized by the Myanmar Embassy at Jade Ball Room of Kempinski Hotel in Beijing. After the reception, the General and wife and party went back to the State Guest house.
At 5.40 pm on 7 June, the General and wife and party went to the Myanmar Embassy in Beijing where they were welcomed by staff and families. At 2.30 pm on 8 June, Daw Mya Mya San, wife of General Maung Aye, accompanied by Daw Khin Cho Oo, wife of Secretary-3 Daw San Yon, wife of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Daw Khin Thein, wife of the Ambassador of Myanmar, Military Attache Col Sein Gyawt and Daw Kyi Kyi Oo, visited the ancient Palace in Beijing.
On 7 June morning, member of the delegation Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla together with Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin met Minister of Communication Mr Huang Zhendong and directors-general and officials at the ministry.
At 9.30 pm on 8 June, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla received Deputy General Manager Mr Wen Gang of Roads and bridge s Corporation of the Ministry of Communication.
At, 10 pm on 8 June, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs received Vice-President Mr Jean Zhou and party of CIT1C Co at the State Guesthouse. At 8.30 am on 8 June, Lt-Gen Tin Hla, together with Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin and Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, received Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Mr Chen Xinhua, Deputy General Manager of Export Import Bank of China Mr Hou Guangqing and official at the hall of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation.
Members of the delegation Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein called on Minister of Agriculture Mr Chen Yaobang and Deputy Minister Mr Liu lian and officials.
In the evening, Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin met President of China National Constructional & Agricultural Machinery Import & Export Corporation (CAMC) Mr Ren Hongbin and party and President of China National Complete Plant Import & Export Corporation Mr Hu Zhaoqing and party at No 10 Hall of the Guesthouse separately.
On 8 June afternoon and evening, minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin received Mr Xu Bin and officials of China National Heavy Machinery Corporation and Director of Sinochem International Co Mr Luo Dong Jiang and party. On 7 June, Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin received Chairman Mr Guangping Lin and party of Sifang Group Corporation Import and Export Co Ltd and the Chairman and party of South-Asia Economic & Technical Cooperation Group at No 10 Hall separately.
On 8 June evening, the minister also received Chairman of Dongfeng Motor Corporation Mr Miao Wei and party and Chairman Mr Ho of China National Complete Plant Import & Export Corporation Group separately.
On 8 June morning, member of the delegation Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung went to Beijing Central Education Broadcast and. Television University where the minister was welcomed by Director of International Cooperation Department Associate Professor Ms Yawang Li and Deputy Director Mr Wang Yong Li.
In the hall, the minister met Principal Mr Chen Zhi Long of the University. Associate Professor Ms Yawang Li explained educational information technology and education broadcasting programmes.
The minister went to China Daily newspaper and met with the Deputy Chief Editor. On 7 June morning, Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin received Vice-President Mr Li Cheng Quon and party of Datang Telecommunication Co. On 8 June, Minister Brig-Gen Win Tin called on Minister of Information and Industry Mr Wu Jichuan at the ministry. Then, Minister Brig- Gen Win Tin met Executive President Mr Yuan Xin and party of Shanghai Bell Co and General Manager Mr Su Weike of CAME and officials of ZTE Telecom Co. On 7 June morning, Minister for Electric power Maj-Gen Tin Htut received Vice- President of CITIC Mr Li Jikai and party and Chairman Mr Sun Xiaowen and officials at the State Guesthouse separately.

(2) Secretary-l meets Japanese friends
YANGON, 13 June-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt invited close friends in Japan on 10 June and hosted Myanmar Mohinga (rice noodles with gravy) and Kaukhnyin-baung (steamed glutinous rice) at Myanmar Embassy.
Present were members of Myanmar delegation Ministers Brig-Gen Abel, U Khin Maung Thein and U Soe Tha, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, Myanmar Ambassador Dr Aung Naing, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and members, Diet Members and former Diet members, government officials, Ambassadors and retired Ambassadors, political leaders, war veterans, businessmen, members of Japan-Myanmar Association, professors and doctors numbering nearly 40.
The Secretary-l said he was glad to meet close old friends and new friends. He said better prospects will further strengthen Japan-Myanmar friendship and cooperation and his trip is a successful one.
Now Myanmar is making political and economic reforms and there are some difficulties, especially the interference of some western big nations. He believed that Myanmar will overcome these obstacles for it has friends from Asia and good neighbouring countries and friendly nations like Japan that shares mutual understanding. He hoped- that Japanese friends will participate in further strengthening of Myanmar-Japan friendship and cooperation and Myanmar will undertake the measures for the progress in all aspects.
Member of the House of Councillors Mr Watanabe urged those present to promote friendship, cooperation and understanding and to participate in the tasks. The Secretary-l greeted the guests individually.
(3) Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt lays bouquet at funeral of late former Japanese PM Mr Keizo Obuchi
YANGON, 13 June-On behalf of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe, a Myanmar delegation led by Special Envoy of the Government of Myanmar Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt left here by special flight on 6 June to attend the funeral service of late former Japanese Prime Minister Mr Keizo Obuchi and arrived at Narita Intentional Airport in Japan via Thailand at 6.30 pm local time.
The Secretary-l and party were welcomed there by Ambassador of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr Yamaguchi Yoichi and Ambassador of Myanmar to Japan Dr Aung Naing and staff of the Myanmar Embassy.
Then, the Secretary- I and Myanmar delegation, accompanied by Myanmar Ambassador Dr Aung Naing, left; Narita Airport by special flight and arrived at Hanada Airport in Tokyo at 7.40 pm local time.
Director-General Mr Naito Shohei of the Protocol Department of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Myanmar Minister-Counsellor U L Zaw Gun welcomed the Secretary-1 and party on board the flight. Then, Military Attache Col Khin Maung Win and staff of the Myanmar Embassy and the Military Attache Office welcome them
Next, the Secretary-l and party proceeded to the Myanmar Embassy in a motorcade and arrived at the Embassy at 8.10 pm local time. Staff and families of the Embassy welcomed the Secretary-l and party.
At 2 pm on 8 June, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Ambassador Dr Aung Naing, together with Heads of State and delegations of various countries of the world laid bouquet at funeral service of late former Prime Minister of Japan Mr Keizo Obuchi at Nippon Budokan Hall, and left there at 3 pm local time.
Also present on the occasion were 83 Heads of State and Government and about 6,000 people. The Secretary- 1 and Myanmar delegation together with other leaders of ASEAN member nations attended the meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Mr Yoshiro Mori and leaders of delegations of ASEAN member nations at 9 am local time on 9 June.
At the meeting, Japanese Prime Minister Mr Yoshiro Mori delivered. an address. Then, Alternate Chairmen of ASEAN Prime Minister of Thailand Mr Chun Leekpai initiated the discussions. Next, leaders of delegations of ASEAN members expressed their sentiments.
Afterwards, the Secretary-1 said. he was confident that Japan can bring about progress of Asia, particularly ASEAN member nations. Recently, Myanmar held the First East Asia Cooperation Meeting of ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) and Ministers of the People's Republic of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea, and approved significant decisions related to regional cooperation matters. Myanmar desires to promote Japan Myanmar bilateral cooperation, and he was glad to know that Japan will continue to implement the policy of increasing cooperation with ASEAN member nations laid down by late Japanese Prime Minister Mr Keizo Obuchi.

(4) Secretary-1 visit NTT Yokosuka Research and Development Center, Soojiji Temple
YANGON, 13 June-On behalf of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe, Myanmar delegation led by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt left here on 6 June to attend funeral service of late former Japanese Prime Minister Mr Keizo Obuchi to be held in Tokyo on 8 June. The special delegation arrived at International Airport in Bangkok on 6 June. The delegation was welcomed by Myanmar Ambassador U Hla Maung, Military Attache Col Kyaw Han and embassy staff. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand Surinpit Suwan met the Secretary-l. The delegation arrived at Narita Airport at 6.30 pm local time.
The Secretary-l and party were welcomed by Ambassador Mr Yamaguchi Yoichi of Ministry of-Foreign Affairs of Japan, Myanmar Ambassador to Japan Dr Aung Naing and embassy staff.

The Secretary-l and party arrived at Myanmar Embassy at 8.10 pm local time. Ambassador Dr Aung Naing hosted dinner in honour of the Secretary- l and party.
The Secretary-1 and party said he was in Japan to attend funeral service of late former Japanese Prime Minister Mr Keizo Obuchi. Myanmar and Japan are the nations with long historical background and they have been friendly nations for a long time. Previous year, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe and the then Japanese Prime Minister Mr Keizo Obuchi met in Manila, the Philippines and bilateral relations improved. The present trip aims at further strengthening of bilateral friendship and relations.

Myanmar delegation led by Secretary-l, accompanied by member of the House of Councillors Mr Hideo Watanabe, arrived at NTT Yokosuka Research and Development Centre in Yokosuka They were welcomed by Vice Chairman of NTT Multimedia System Group Mr Yusuke Tachibana and officials. Dr Kunihiro Kato reported on NTT Yokosuka Research and Development Centre.
They observed research work and a luncheon was hosted. Myanmar delegation led by Secretary-l, accompanied by member of the House of Councillors Mr Watanabe, arrived at Soojiji Temple, one of the Shinto temples that reflects the cultural heritage of the Japanese people They were welcomed by reverend Sayadaws led by Presiding Sayadaw Itabashi Koshu The Secretary-l invited the Abbot to come to Myanmar. He also visited the fine residence of the Abbot. They arrived back at Myanmar Embassy at 5.40 pm.
Soojiji Temple was built about 800 years ago The present temple was reconstructed in 1910 and altogether 200 members of the Sangha reside there.
In the evening, Chairman of Japan-Myanmar Merchants Association and leader of Japanese entrepreneurs Mr Tomoo Takahara called on the Secretary- 1 at the embassy. The Secretary-l attended traditional dinner hosted by member of the House of Councillors Mr Hideo Watanabe and spent the night at the embassy.
On 10 June, the Secretary-l invited Japanese friends hosted them breakfast. In the evening, the Secretary- I met Myanmar friends in Japan. Daw Cho Cho Thin Galay working at NHK (World Radio Japan) and family donated Y 100,000 Y 50,000 for renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda, Y 25,000 each for Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and Kamayut Tiger Parahita Training School. The Secretary- 1 accepted the donations.
On 11 June, Myanmar delegation led by Secretary- 1 was seen off at Narita Airport by Myanmar Ambassador Dr Aung Naing, Military Attachi Col Khin Maung Win and embassy staff. The Secretary-l and party arrived at Changi International Airport in Singapore.The Secretary-l and party arrived back here in the evening.
During his stay in Japan, Minister U Khin Maung Thein visited Daiwa Securities Group on 8 June. Chairman Mr T Kusuda reported on monetary affairs The minister and party visited Tokyo Stock Exchange where he was welcomed by Vice-Chairman Mr Y Yamashita and party.
The minister and party visited Tokyo Electric Power Co where Vice-Chairman H Tamura reported on work and power supply in Tokyo. Minister Brig-Gen Able attended International Conference on the Future of Asia held from 8 to 9 June.
On 8 June, the minister discussed economic cooperation with Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr Yamamoto Ichika and officials. On 9 June, Minister Brig-Gen Abel met Minister of International Trade and Industry Mr Kukaya and officials. They discussed economic cooperation between the two countries. Minister Brig-Gen Abel also met Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Mr Arai and officials. On 9 June, Minister U Soe Tha met Minister Taichi Sakaiya of Economic Planning at the office of Economic Planning. Present were Deputy Director-General Mr Komoda and Director Mr Miyazaki.
Minister U Soe Tha said he came to Japan with two objectives to attend funeral service of late Japanese Prime Minister Mr Keizo Obuchi and to make friends with the related ministries and build friendship. The Japanese Ministry reported on latest economic situation of Japan and Minister U Soe Tha also reported on development in Myanmar, economic progress, present and previous condition on Japan - Myanmar relations. They discussed cooperation between Myanmar's Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development and Economic planning of Japan.

(5) Ministry of Commerce holds first four-monthly meeting for 2000
YANGON, 13 June-The Ministry of Commerce held the first four-monthly meeting for the year 2000 this morning at the ministry, with an address by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council l.t-Gen Tin Oo .
Speaking on the occasion, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo explained the State's policy and points to be observed in practical job in relation to the functions of the ministry.
The ministry was reformed to carry out tasks in a consolidated way in accord with the new economic policy. There are only two departments and one enterprise the Directorate of Trade, the Department of Border Trade and the Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading under the Ministry of Commerce at present, he said, and explained the functions of the respective bodies.
Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha also gave speeches at the meeting. Afterwards, the four monthly meeting began.
(6) 311 Labutta Township NLD members collectively resign of own accord
YANGON, 13 June-A ceremony to collectively present letters of resignation of 311 members of Saluseik Village- tract and Thingangyi Village-tract of National League for Democracy in Labutta Township, Ayeyawady Division, was held at Basic Education Primary School in the township at 10.30 am on 14 January 2000.
Three hundred and eleven members of Sluseik Village-tract and Thingangyi Village-tract of NLD in Labutta Township, Ayeyawady Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to the party concerned and then to the Labutta Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub commission on 14 January 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
Member of Sluseik Village-tract NLD U Ohn Win and member of Thingangyi Village-tract NLD U Tin Shwe, on behalf of the party members, explained about the resignation from the party and handed over the letters of resignation to member of Town- ship Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-com- mission U Myint Swe.
