(1)  Senior General Than Shwe sends message of  sympathy to Indonesia
 
YANGON 9 June-Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the  Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of sympathy to His Excellency Mr Abdurrahman Wahid, President of  the Republic of Indonesia for loss of lives and for devastation caused by the recent severe earthquake in  Bengkulu Province on the Indonesian island of Sumatra



 
(2)  Secretary-2 attends reception to mark 50th Anniversary of  Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Myanmar and PRC
 
YANGON, 8 June-A reception to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations  between the Union of Myanmar and People's Republic of China was held at the PRC Ambassador's  Residence on Pyay Road at 6.30 pm today.
 
 Present were Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, wife of Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen  Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than  Nwe, Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, ministers, the Chief  Justice, the Attorney-General, deputy ministers, senior Tatmadaw officers, heads of department,  Ambassadors and Military Attaches of Foreign Embassies in Yangon and their wives, Ambassador of  People's Republic of China Mr Liang Dong and wife and embassy staff and guests.
 
Ambassador Mr Liang Dong extended greetings .Then, Secretary-2 Lt- Gen Tin Oo made speech on the  occasion.  Then, the dinner was hosted to the guests.
 


(3)  Deputy Minister oversees agricultural work in Mandalay Division
 
YANGON, 8 June - Deputy Minister for Agriculture and irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung inspected patches of  coffee plants, tea plants and vegetables at the coffee farm of Myanma Agriculture Service in PyinOo- Lwin on  6 June morning.
 
Then, the deputy minister went to Golden Lion Coffee Mix Factory of the ministry. The factory manager  reported on the operation of the factory and the production of coffee. The deputy minister gave instructions  and inspected the factory.
 
In the afternoon, the deputy minister and party inspected the experimental fields where Hmawbysan paddy  strain and VR-9 paddy strain are being cultivated, in Aungtha and Ywamontha Villages in Thazi Township  this afternoon.
 


(4)  Meeting on export promotion held
 
YANGON, 8 June-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone attended the coordination meeting on export  promotion of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading at the corner of Merchant Street and Pansodan Street this  afternoon.
 
Also present were Managing Director of MAPT U Min Hla Aung and general managers and officials of Border  Trade Department. The minister called on all to unitedly strive for promotion of exports and spoke of  purchasing rice, pulses and beans, oil crops and other crops to meet the targets, to work in accord with three  objectives laid down by the government, to minimize loss and wastage and to carry out the construction of  the purchasing centre through competitive bidding. Then, the managing director and general managers  reported on their work. The meeting end with concluding remarks by the minister.
 


(5)  Staging National-level Narcotic Drug Exhibition coordinate
 
YANGON, 8 June-The Committee for Organizing National-level Narcotic Drug Exhibition in commemoration  of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking held its third meeting in the meeting hall of  Myanmar Police Force under the Ministry of Home Affairs this morning. Chairman of the Committee Deputy  Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein addressed the meeting.
 
 The deputy minister elaborated on the exhibition. Then, officials of departments, the central working  committee and sub-committees reported on their work. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the  deputy minister.
 


(6) Commander attends coord meeting of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council
 
YANGON, 8 June- Chairman of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council Commander of Triangle  Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein attended the coordination meeting of Shan State (East) Peace and  Development Council held at City Hall, Kengtung on 5 June morning. The commander made an opening  speech and the attendance's reported on details of work done and plans to be carried out on regional  agricultural sector and all- round development tasks with the help of char[s. The commander gave necessary  instructions and fulfilled their needs. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the commander.



(7) Coordination meeting between Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council and various departments held
 
YANGON, 8 June-A coordination meeting between Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council and  various departments was held at the meeting hall of Central Command on 5 June morning. Commander  Maj-Gen Ye Myint made a speech on the occasion. Chairmen of District and Township Peace and  Development Councils reported to the commander on their activities and future tasks. Commander Maj-Gen  Ye Myint attended to their needs. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the Commander.

 Minister attends ceremony to honour victorious athletes
 
YANGON, 8 June-A ceremony to honour the victorious athletes who took part in first ASEAN and 10th Kuala  Lumpur Disabled Sports Tournament was held at Aung San Hall of Social Welfare Department at 3 pm  today, attended by Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Director-General  U Sit Myaing and officials and victorious athletes.
 
 In the tournaments, Daw Nyunt Nyunt Win of Social Welfare Department got three gold medals and U Myat  Khine three gold, one silver and one bronze and Maung Thet Oo of School for the Blind two gold.
 
At the ceremony, the minister urged the athletes to strive for winning medals in Asia-Pacific Disabled Sports  Tournament, 2000 to be held in South Korea and presented cash award to the winners. On behalf of the  athletes, Daw Nyunt Nyunt Win spoke words of thanks.
 
 9th Asian Youth Under-16 Soccer Qualifiers begin
 
YANGON, 8 June-The opening ceremony of the 9th Asian Youth Under-16 Soccer Qualifiers Group-9 was  held at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna at 4 pm today.
 
 Among the spectators were Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura  Aye Myint, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Vice-Chairman of MOC  Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint,  Commander of No 4 Military Region Brig-Gen Myo Myint, senior military officers, General-Secretary of MOC  Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department and President of Myanmar Football  Federation Col Thaung Htaik and officials, leading patrons of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation,  ambassadors and embassy staff of Malaysian and Lao PDR Embassies and soccer teams.
 
 Lao PDR and Malaysian youth teams took designated places and hoisted their national flags. Minister  Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Col Thaung Htaik and Match Commissioner of Asian Football Federation Mr  Ibrahim Othman greeted the footballers.
 
 The two teams exchanged the commemorative pennants. In the first match, Malaysian youth team beat Lao  PDR youth team 2-1. Before the second match, Myanmar and Guam youth teams took designated places  and hoisted their national flags. Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Col Thaung Htaik and Match  Commissioner of Asian Football Federation Mr Ibrahim Othman greeted the footballers. The two teams  exchanged the commemorative pennants. In the second match, Myanmar youth team beat Guam youth  teams 26-0.
 
 Team managers meet for the 9th Asian Youth 16 Championship 2000 Group 9
 
YANGON, 8 June-The managers of Myanmar, Malaysia, Guam and Laos youth soccer teams which will take  part in the 9th Asian Youth- 16 Championship 2000, Group 9 to be held at Thuwunna Youth Training Centre  on 8, 10 and 12 June, held a coordination meeting at the Kandawgyi Palace Hotel yesterday evening.
 
 Deputy Director of Sports and Physical Education Department General Secretary of Myanmar Football  Federation U Banny Tin Aung, Chief Referee of MFF U Ba Yee, referees who will take part in the 9th Asian  Youth- 16 Championship 2000, Group 9 and guests attended the meeting.
 
On behalf of the president of MFF, General Secretary U Banny Tin Aung extended greetings. Match  Commissioner of Group 9 Mr Ibrahim Othman (Singapore) discussed with those present on rules and  regulations. Then, the youth team managers and international referees (FIFA) also took part in the  discussion.
 


(9)PRC art and acrobatic troupe stages performances for second day
 
YANGON, 8 June -The and acrobatic troupe of People's Republic of China comprising 30 members currently  here to present entertainment programme to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic  Relations between the Union of Myanmar and China, staged performances at Nationals Theatre on Myoma  Kyaung Street this evening for second day. Present were officials of the Ministry of Culture and Chinese  Embassy and guests.
 


(10) Deputy Minister attends cash donation ceremony for Special Teak Plantation and tasks of Greening  Tropical Zone
 
YANGON, 8 June-A ceremony to donate cash for Special Teak Plantation and tasks of Greening Tropical  Zone by Kaung Myat Mon Co Ltd and Swe Family was held at Taw Win Hall of Forest Department (HQ) at 4  pm yesterday, attended by Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Deputy Director-General U Shwe Kyaw,  directors, donors and officials.
 
Deputy Director-General U Shwe Kyaw accepted the donation and presented certificates of honour to the  donors. Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun spoke words of thanks.
 


(11) Voters of Aungmyaythazan Township unanimously submit petitions for dissolving pessimist NLD
 
YANGON, 8 June-Voters from Aungmyaythazan Township, Mandalay Division, expressed no support for  pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolving it at rallies in two venues on 30 April.
 
A total of 8,000 people from 10 Wards attended the rally at the Sports Ground of Basic Education High School  No 17 in Aungmyaythazan Township. On behalf of attendance's, U Win Maung from Ahnaiktaw Ward  expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it Altogether six representatives, on  behalf of local people, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty  Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Bo Lin. Sports Ground of Basic Education primary School  No 21 in the township.
 
On behalf of attendance's, U Kyaw Kyaw Oo from Mindeeikin Ward expressed no support for pessimist NLD  and petitioned for dissolving it. Altogether twelve representatives, on behalf of local people, presented  petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election  Sub-commission U Than Naing. The ceremonies ended with chanting of the slogan Our Three Main  National Causes. There are 102,309 people who can vote in Aungmyathazan Township. The expressed no  support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it.  100,895 people signed the petitions which is 98.62 per cent.
 


(12) 18 Myeik Township NLD members resign of own accord
 
YANGON, 8 June-Eighteen members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myeik Township,  Taninthayi Division. Eighteen members of Myeik Township NLD, Taninthayi Division, of their own accord,  resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myeik Township Multiparty Democracy General Election  Sub-commission and the party concerned on 8 May 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party  politics of NLD.


(13) Illegal drug possessor gets 5 years
 
YANGON, 8 June-The Lashio Township Court handed down a sentence of five years' imprisonment on a  drug possessor on 23 February 1999. Members of Lashio Township Police Force, acting on information,  searched Chain Wai, 23, of Ward 12, Lashio Township, and found 0.00001 kg of  heroin. Action was taken against him in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The  court handed down one year's imprisonment under Section 15 and five years' imprisonment under Section  16 (C) on him to serve concurrently.
