(1)  Senior  General  Than Shwe  sees off  Secretary-1 bound for Japan to attend  funeral  service  of  former Japanese PM

YANGON,  6  June-  Chairman  of  the  State  Peace  and Development  Council Commander-in-Chief of  Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe saw off Special Envoy of the  Government of the Union of Myanmar  Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development  Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt who left here by air at 7 am today to attend  the funeral  service of the former Prime  Minister of Japan Mr Keizo Obuchi at the invitation of the  Government of Japan.

The  Secretary-  1  was  accompanied  by  Minister  for National  Planning and Economic  Development U Soe Tha, Minister  at the State  Peace and  Development  Council Chairman's  Office  Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung  Thein,  Deputy  Minister  for Foreign  Affairs  U Khin  Maung  Win,  Director-General Lt-Col Pe Nyein of State Peace and Development  Council Office  and  Director-General  Thura  U  Aung  Htet  of Protocol Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


(2) Means sought to manufacture machinery for palm oil mills

YANGON, 6 June -A meeting  was held this  afternoon  at the  Office  of  the  Prime Minister  to coordinate manufacturing  of machinery  for palm oil mills and oil purification  factories  with an address by Chairman of Leading Committee  for  Region-wise Development of Agriculture Secretary-2 of  the  State Peace  and Development  Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.  Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development  Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint emceed the  meeting.  Speaking  on the occasion, Secretary-2 of  the State Peace and Development  Council  Lt-Gen Tin Oo said  Myanmar is an agriculture  nation;  though  efforts are being made in putting  more  land  under  edible  oil  crops  such as groundnut,  sesame and sunflower,  the nation still has to import  edible oil as it cannot  produce  sufficient amount  of  edible  oil for its  local  consumption.  A total of 500,000  acres have been  permitted to private companies  to grow  oil  palm in  Taninthayi  Division, where  climate  and soil  conditions  are  suitable  to cultivate  the crop.  Up to now, over 11,000 acres have been put under oil palm.  It is estimated  that the oil palm  cultivation  areas will reach 26,000 acres in the division at  the end  of 2000-2001 fiscal.  The Secretary-2  looked  into their  requirements.  He then formed and assigned  duties to Committee  for Producing Machinery  for Palm Oil Mills  led by  Minister  at the Prime  Minister's  Office  Brig-  Gen  Lun  Maung.  The meeting ended in the evening.


(3) Experts  Meeting on the  establishment  of SEAMEO Regional Centre held

YANGON, 6 June-The opening  ceremony of Experts Meeting on the  Establishment  of a SEAMEO Regional  Centre for History and Tradition in Myanmar, jointly  organized by Ministry  of Education and  the  South  East  Asian Ministers of Education  Organization  (SEAMEO) was held at the International  Business Centre on Pyay Road this morning.

Minister for  Education U Than Aung,  Deputy  Ministers Brig-Gen  Soe Win Maung and U Myo  Nyunt, directors-general,  deputy  directors-general and chairmen of departments  and boards under the ministry, rectors and pro-rectors of  universities  and colleges, delegates  from  member  countries  of  SEAMEO  Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia,  Laos,  Malaysia,  Myanmar,  the Philippines,  Singapore,  Thailand and Vietnam attended the ceremony.

Addressing  the  meeting, Secretary  of  the  Myanmar Historical  Commission  U Tun Aung  Chein  said that in line with the SEAMEO charter,  which,  recognizing  the challenges  in  the  contemporary  world;  resolves  on cooperative efforts for regional development.  the 35th SEAMEO  conference  held in Bali in  February  2000 had decided on the establishment of the Regional Centre for History and  Tradition in Myanmar,  and that the Centre was meant to give impetus to  educational  research and innovative  pedagogy  in  the  fields  of  history  and tradition.  He  stressed  that  the  Centre  is not the concern  of  Myanmar alone  but  all  SEAMEO member countries and expressed his hope that the meeting would be of value in the establishment and development of the Centre.  Then Director Dr Suparak Rasha Jantra extended greetings  and the ceremony  came to an end.  After the ceremony,  Minister, deputy ministers and the delegates posed  for photograph.  The  meeting  will continue tomorrow.

(4)  Committee  of  Experts/Officials Meeting  of BIMST-EC Energy Sector Cooperation Programme continues

YANGON,  6 June-  The  Committee  of  Experts/Officials Meeting of BIMST-EC Energy Sector Cooperation Programme continued for the second day at the Hotel Equatorial on Alanpya Pagoda Road in Dagon Township at 9 am today.

Director-General U  Soe  Myint  of  Energy Planning Department  presided  over the meeting,  and  delegates discussed  more  cooperation  in  energy  sector  among RIMRT-FC member  nations.  At 4 pm, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen  Lun Thi and  Deputy  Ministers  U Tin Tun and Brig-Gen  Thein Aung attended the meeting.  Chairman of National Committee for BIMST-EC Energy Sector Cooperation  Programme Deputy Minister U Tin Tun gave a speech.

On behalf of all delegates, Mr D  Chandrasekera  of Sri Lanka  spoke  words of  thanks.  The  meeting  approved cooperation in  natural  gas  and  renewable energy sectors, establishment of  BIMST-EC  Energy  Sector Information Centre in Myanmar, arrangements for setting up two  work  groups  made up of  experts  of  BIMST-EC member nations to implement the  cooperation in natural gas and renewable  energy  sectors and decisions of the meeting to be submitted to BIMST-EC  Ministers  Meeting to be held in June 2000 and to seek its approval.


(5) Minister inspects Bran Oil Mills of MAPT

YANGON, 6 June-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, accompanied  by  Managing  Director  U Min Hla  Aung of Myanma  Agricultural  Produce  Trading  and  officials, arrived at No 01 Bran Oil Mill on  Bayintnaung  Road in Ward 4, Hline Township, this afternoon.

In the  briefing  hall,  Factory  Manager  U  Kyaw  Win reported on history of the mill and production matters. The Minister gave  instructions  on innovation  of some parts of  machines  of the mill, to meet the  target of the mill, measures for prevention of natural  disasters and cultivation of shady trees and vegetables.

Then, the Minister  and party  proceeded  to No 03 Bran Oil  Mill  in  Pauktawwa,  Ward 7 in  Insein  Township. Factory Manager U Nyunt Aung and officials  reported on matters  related to the mill.  The  Minister  then gave instructions on work and inspected the mill.


(6) Ministry of Mines holds coord meeting

YANGON, 6  June-Ministry  of Mines  held a  meeting  to assess accomplishments in the first four months of Year 2000 and to  coordinate  the tasks  for  exceeding  the target of the second four months at Thiri  Yadana  Hall of the ministry this morning,  attended by Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint.

At the  meeting,  the  Deputy  Minister  and  officials reported on tasks  undertaken in the first four months, innovation,  successes and  requirements.  The Minister gave  necessary  instructions  and presented  prize for innovation of Ferro Chrome to the officials.  Then, the Minister left  instructions  on guidance of the Head of State to be implemented in the second four months.

(7) Central Level Course opened on modern  multimedia teaching techniques

YANGON, 6 June-A  ceremony  to open the  Central  Level Course on modem  multimedia  teaching  techniques to be lectured  at  Special Refresher Courses  for  Basic Education Teachers  at  Central  Institute  of  Civil Service  was held at the  hall of No 1 Basic  Education Department  on Natmauk  Street in Bahan  Township  this morning,  attended by  Minister  for  Education  U Than Aung.

Then, the  Minister  urged  trainees  to  industriously pursue the  lectures  in the  course. Next, Director-General  U Tin Nyo reported on matters related to the course.

Trainees will be conducted  theoretical  and  practical subjects related to multimedia  Altogether 102 trainees from Basic Education Departments, teachers who attended PGDMA  courses at Yangon  and  Mandalay  Institutes  of Education,  supervisors  and  technicians  of CICSs and officials of States and  Divisions  are  attending  the course.

C-in-C (Navy)'s Shield Chess X Championship opens

YANGON,  6  June-A  ceremony  to  open  the Commander-in-Chief (Navy) ' s Shield Chess Championship was held at Naval Training  Command  Headquarters  this morning.  On behalf of the  Commander-in-Chief  (Navy), Commander of Naval Flotilla Captain San Win attended and made a speech on the  occasion.  Altogether  nine teams are taking part in the championship.

Minister meets selected  under-16  Myanmar youth soccer team

YANGON, 6 June-Chairman  of Myanmar  Olympic  Committee Minister  for Sports  Brig-Gen  Thura Aye Myint met the selected under-16 Myanmar youth soccer team at National Indoor Stadium-1 in Thuwunna this morning.

Myanmar youth team will take part in group-9 of the 9th under-16 Asia youth soccer  qualifiers  on 8, 10 and 12 June. Also  present  at  the  meeting  were Secretary-General  of MOC  Director-General  Col Thaung Htaik of  Sports  and  Physical  Education  Department, officials, selected youth footballers,  coaches and the manager.

Under-16 Malaysian youth soccer team arrives

YANGON, 6 June-A 25 member  under- 16  Malaysian  youth soccer team led by Mr Esa Bin Mamek arrived here by air this  morning  to take part  in the group-9  of 9th  under-16 Asia youth  soccer qualifiers.

Guam youth soccer team arrives

YANGON, 6 June-The  Guam youth soccer team arrived here yesterday to take part in the 9th under-16  Asian Youth Soccer Qualifiers  Group-9 to be held at Thuwunna Youth Training Center on 8,10 12 June.

Laos will play  against  Malaysia  and Myanmar  against Guam on 8  June,  Malaysia  against  Guam  and  Myanmar against  Laos on 10 June  and  Guam  against  Laos  and Myanmar against Malaysia on 12 June.


(9) Voters of  Myittha  Township  unanimously  submit petitions for dissolving pessimist NLD

YANGON,  6 June-  The  people  from  Myittha  Township, Mandalay  Division,  expressed no support for pessimist National League  for  Democracy  and  petitioned for dissolving  it at rallies in two venues on 27 April and two venues on 28 April.

A  total  of  16,912  people  from  26 village-tracts attended the rally  in Myittha.  On behalf of attendance's,  farmer U Aung Min  expressed  no support for pessimist NLD and Petitioned for dissolving  it.  U Khin  Aung,  on  behalf  of  local  people, presented petitions  signed by the  people to member of  Township Multiparty Democracy General Election  Sub-commission U Ohn Maung.  A  total  of 18.002 people from  20 village-tracts rallied in Dayegaung Village.

A total of 21,458 people form 21 village-tracts rallied in Kume  Village.  A total  of  17,931  people  from 21 village-tracts rallied in Ywakhainggi village.

On behalf of attendance's, farmer U Myo Myint expressed no  support  for  pessimist  NLD  and  petitioned for dissolving it.  U Myint Naing,

There  are  88,214  people,  who can  vote,  in  Mydtha Township.  The  number  of  people,  who  expressed  no support for NLD and signed the petitions by  dissolving it is 87,611 people or 99.32 per cent.

(10) Drug trafficker gets 15 years

YANGON, 6 June-A  combined team  comprising  numbers of local  intelligence  unit  and  Myanmar  Police  Force, acting on information, searched a car and passenger Pay Sone, 30, son of U Au  Kyanhtin,  Ward 8, Lashio,  on 7 March 1998 and seized  100,000  stimulant  tablets from him.

On 15  February  1999, he was  sentenced  by the  state court to 3  years'  imprisonment  under  Section  15 of Narcotic Drugs and  Psychotropic  Substances Law and 15 years'  imprisonment under Section 19 (A) of the law to serve concurrently.


(11) 35 KhinU  Township  NLD  members  resign  of own accord

YANGON, 6  June-Thirty-five  members  resigned from the National  League  for  Democracy  of  KhinU Township, Sagaing Division.  Thirty-five members of KhinU Township  NLD, Sagaing  Division,  of their own accord, resigned  by sending  letters of  resignation  to KhinU Township Multiparty  Democracy General Election Sub-commission  and the party  concerned  on 19 January 2000 as they no longer wished to  participate  in party politics of NLD.
