(1)Vice-Chairman of State Peace and Development Council General Maung Aye to visit People's Republic of  China

YANGON, 2 June-At the invitation of the Vice President of the People's Republic of China; HE Mr Hu Jintao, the Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council General Maung Ave. still nay an official visit to the People's Republic of China in the near future.


(2)  Myanmar Airways International holds Meeting No 2/2000

YANGON, 1 June-Meeting No 2/2000 on development of Myanmar Airways International under the Ministry of Transport was held in the meeting hall of the ministry on Merchant Street this afternoon, addressed by Secretary- 1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe explained matters related to the number of airplanes used from December 1999 to April 2000, flight hours, the number of passengers and the tons of cargo, income and expenditure and measures being taken for development of Myanmar Airways International.

Chairman of Board of Directors U Maung Maung Ohn reported progress of work in implementing the decisions passed at the previous meeting. Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel and Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe explained matters pertaining to the airline.

The Secretary- 1 urged all to keep up the rate of progress achieved in implementing the objectives, to change ways and means if there is any wrong procedure and to make efforts for the further progress of work. The meeting ended in the evening. After the meeting, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Deputy Minister U Pe Than and Superintending Engineer U Charlie Than of Inland Water Transport reported to the Secretary-l on matters related to Deck Barge on which the Buddha Image weighing about 500 tons will be carried from the marble quarry.


(3 ) Secretary-1 attends fresher welcome ceremony for trainees of Buddha Dhamma Diploma Course for  2000-2001 academic year

YANGON, 1 June -The fresher welcome ceremony for trainees of Buddha Dhamma Diploma Course for 2000 2001 academic year of the international Theravada Buddhist Missionary University was held at Central Hall of the University this morning, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Also present on the occasion were Vice-Chancellor of the University Secretary of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Commit tee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Magway Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara and members of the Sangha, Ovadacariya Sayadaws of the University, Rector Sayadaw Aggs 'Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddh Snma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Snzandabhivamsa and lecturer Sayadaws, ministers, deputy ministers, heads of diplomatic mission, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, directors-general and officials of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, officials of the University and trainees and guests. Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party receives the Five Precepts from Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara.

After the ceremony, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party presented fruits to members of the Sangha. Secretary Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected library of the University. A total of 64 trainees including monks, nuns, men and women will be attending the Buddha Dhamma Diploma Course 2000-2001 for one year.

(4) Minister meets Ambassador of Sri Lanka

YANGON, 1 June-Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing meet Ambassador of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to the Union of Myanmar Mr Ubhayasekara Mapa at his office at the corner of Saya San Road and No l Industry Road at 3 pm today. Also present at the call were Director-General U Kyaw Tun of Prisons Department and Head of Office U Nyan Lin.


(5)Minister meets guests from Japan

YANGON, 1 June- Minister for Education U Than Aung met Chairman of Myanmar Tokiwa Corporation and Japan Tokiwa Corporation Mr Naoyutk Soya and party who reported on tasks jointly carried out with Education Department at his office this afternoon. Also present at the call were Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung , U Myo Nyunt and officials.


(6)  Minister meets Head of SARA

YANGON, 1 June-Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin met Head of State Administration of Religious Affairs (SARA) Mr Ye Xiaowen at his office at 4.30 pm today. Also present were directors-general of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana, the Pro-Rector (Admin) of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University and the Head of Office.


(7 ) UMFCCI President meets former Bangladesh Military Attache

YANGON, 1 June-President of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Win Myint and General Secretary U Zaw Min Win met former Military Attache of the People's Republic of Bangladesh to the Union of Myanmar Brigadier Nasiruddin Sarwar at the UMFCCI building, No 504/ 506, Merchant Street, Kyauktada Township this morning. They held discussions on invest opportunities and trade in Myanmar and matters to Promote bilateral trade.

(8 ) Minister meets visitors form ROK

YANGON, 1 June-Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin met Director (Overseas Marketing Division) of Daewoo Telecom Ltd. Mr Tai Nyan Kin and Managing Director of Myanmar Daewoo Ltd.of the Republic of Korea Mr Tae-Chul Shin at his office at 10 am on 30 May. Similarly, Minister Brig Gen Win Tin met General Manager of Ionet Inc Co Ltd Mr David Chen at his office at 11 am the same day. Also present were Managing Director U Maung Maung Tin of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications and of officials.


(9 ) PRC State Councillors visits Shwedagon Pagoda, Myanma Gems Museum, National Museum

YANGON,1 June-State Councillors of the People's Republic of China Mr Ismail Amat and delegation currently here at the invitation of Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt; visited the Shwedagon Pagoda, the Myanma Gems Museum and the National Museum this morning.

The PRC guests, accompanied by Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Ambassador of People's Republic of China Mr Liang Dong, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and officials, arrived at Shwedagon Pagoda at 8.30 am today. The delegation was welcomed by Vice-Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint, Director-General of Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint and members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees.

Mr Ismail Amat and delegation paid obeisance to Buddha image and offered flowers, lights to Buddha image at Aryonkhan Tazaung of Western Stairway of the Pagoda. State Councillors Mr Ismail Amat signed in the visitors' book and presented K 100,000 to portrait the Pagoda Board of Trustees. U Kyee Myint, member of the Pagoda Board of Trustees, presented a portrait of Shwedagon Pagoda to Mr Ismail Amat Then. Mr Ismail Amat and delegation went to Myanma Gems Museum on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road and were welcomed by officials of Myanma Gems Enterprise of the Ministry of Mines. Officials conducted the delegation round the museum.

Then, State Councillors Mr Ismail Amat and delegation arrived the National Museum at 3 pm and were welcomed by Director-General of Department of Cultural Institute U Myint Thein Swe, Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy Mr Tang Ying and officials of the institute. Officials conducted the delegation round the national museum. State Councillors Mr Ismail Amat signed in the visitors' book at the museum. Minister for Culture U Win Sein presented souvenirs to Mr Ismail Amat. The delegation left there in the evening.


(10) Over 70,000 saplings planted in Yangon Division on first day of tree growing season

YANGON, 1 June-Tree planting ceremony of Yangon Division for the year 2000 began at four districts in the division this morning. Sponsored by Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, ceremonies were held at Yangon North District, Yangon West District, Yangon East District and Yangon South District.

Member of the State Peace and Development Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than delivered an address at the opening of tree planting ceremony held in Mingaladon Township, Yangon North District at 7 am toady. Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than -formally launched the opening of the tree growing season held in Hlegu Township, Yangon North District; Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor of Yangon U Ko Lay the opening of the tree growing season held in Hline Township, Yangon

West District, Vice-Chairman of YCDC Vice-Mayor Col Maung pa the opening of the tree growing season held in Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township, Yangon East District; and Vice-Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint the opening of the tree growing season held in Thanlyin Township, Yangon South District.

(11) Minister for H & T meets Myanmar Tourism Promotion Board

YANGON, 1 June-Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Myanmar Tourism Promotion Board at Traders' Hotel this afternoon. The minister said that although Tourism in Myanmar was progressing rapidly since 1992/1993, the development momentum did not make further progress after Visit Myanmar Year, 1996 due to regional economic instability and perpetrations of internal and external pessimists. The meeting ended in the evening.


(12 )  Health and Welfare Work Committee meets

YANGON, 1 June The Health and Welfare Work Committee of Central Body Meeting of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association held its second coordination meeting at the meeting hall of MWJA (Headquarters) this afternoon. Chairman of the Committee Dr Tin Shwe (Sayawun Tin Shwe) chaired the meeting with U Soe Aunts  (Soe Aung-Traditional Medicine) as master of ceremonies. Presenting gifts, selling of souvenirs, opening of clinic, reception and study tour programmes for CEC members, guests and well-wishers were discussed.


(13 )  1,100 boys initiated into novicehood in Rakhine State

YANGON, I May-A ceremony to novitiate 1,100 boys, sponsored by Proprietor of Shwethanlwin Company Thiha Thudama Manizotadara U Thein Win and Thiha Thudama Theingi Daw Ni and U Kyaw Win and Daw Nang Mauk Lauk Sai and family, was held on Dhamma Rekkhita Hill in An Township, Kyaukpyu District, Rakhine State, on 27 and 28 May. Deputy Commander of Western Command Brig-Gen Aung Thein attended the ceremony and paid respects to Sayadaws and members of the Sangha. The procession of the' novitiation ceremony took place on 27 May morning.

After the procession, the congregation received the five Precepts from the Presiding Sayadaw of Aungyamye Pariyatti Sarthintaik. Then, the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha recited the parittas. In the evening, 1,100 boys were initiated into novicehood at the pandal in front of Datpaungsu Pagoda on Dhamma Rekkhita Hill.

(14 ) Taekwando sports equipment for Taekwando Federation

YANGON, 1 June- The Embassy of Republic of Korea in Yangon donated tatami for Taekwando Federation at Padamya Hall of National Indoor Stadium (I) this afternoon, attended by Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint. Also present on the occasion were Ambassador of ROK Mr Chung Jung-gum, Counsellor Mr Kim Wan Joong, Secretary of Myanmar Olympic Committee Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik, Deputy Director-General Lt-Col Thein Aung, coach Mr Jung Woong Hwan and guests. Ambassador Mr Chung Jung-gum explained the donation and extended greetings. Then, Mr Chung Junggum presented 144-tatami worth US $ 3,500 to Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint.  Minister Brig Gen Thura Aye Myint spoke words of thanks.


(15 ) Minister for Mines meets Tin and Tungsten Entrepreneurs

YANGON, 1 June-A meeting of Minister for Mines and Tin and Tungsten Entrepreneurs was held at Thiriyana Hall of Ministry of Mines at 1.30 pm today, attended by Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint. The minister made a speech on progress of production of minerals, exploration of mineral deposits in Taninthayi Division and improvement of quality of minerals.

(16 ) 7 Aungmyethazan Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 1 June-Seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Aungmyethazan Township, Mandalay Division. Seven members of Aungmyethazan Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Aungmyethazan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 14 May 2000 as they no longer wished participate in party politics of NLD.


(17 ) Drug possessor gets five years

YANGON, 1 June-The Lashio Township Court handed down a sentence of five years' imprisonment on a drug possessor on 10 February 1999. Members of Lashio Township Police Force, acting on information, searched Ohn Kyaw, 30, son of U Hsuman of Ward 6, Lashio Township, at 6.10 pm on 2  December 1998 and found 0.0025 kg of heroin on him. Action was taken against him in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The court handed down three years' imprisonment under Section 15 and five years' imprisonment under Section 16 (C) on him to serve concurrently.
