(1)  Projects of Ministry of Energy for 2000-2001 coordinated

YANGON, 29 May-A meeting to review work for 1999-2000 fiscal year and to coordinate projects of the  Ministry of Energy for 2000- 2001 fiscal year was held at Yadana Hall of the ministry this morning,  attended by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development

Council Lt-Gen Win Myint. Managing Director of Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise U Kyaw Nyein,  Managing Director of Myanma Petrochemical Enterprise and Managing Director of Myanmar Petroleum  Products Enterprise U Aung Hlaing reported on measures undertaken and projects for 2000-2001 fiscal  year. The Secretary-3 and Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi gave instructions on the work.


(2)  Yangon Division Peace and Development Council   coordinates work performance, lays down tasks

YANGON, 29 May -Yangon Division Peace and Development Council held a meeting to coordinate   work performance done in the first four months and to lay down tasks to be carried out in the Second   four months in the meeting hall of the council today.

Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than addressed   the meeting. The commander spoke of agricultural, economic and administrative work done in the first   four months and tasks to be carried out in the second four. months. Then, Head of Yangon Division   Planning Department U Shwe reported on the plans for 2000-2001. Then, a general round of  discussions followed. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the commander.


(3)  Minister for Industry-l inspects factories in Yangon

YANGON, 29 May-Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen   Kyaw Win and officials, arrived at Yangon No 1 Cigarette Factory of Myanma Foodstuff Industries in   Hlaing Township this morning. The minister gave necessary instructions and inspected the factory.   Then, the minister and party proceeded to Myanma General and Maintenance Industries in Hline  Township and inspected the production process. In the briefing hall, the minister met responsible
officials and gave instructions on the upgrading of the factory, distribution of the products at reasonable  prices.

(4)  Ceremony to drive stakes and start piling work of Wakema Bridge held

YANGON, 29 May-A ceremony to drive stakes and start piling work of Wakema Bridge was held in  Wakema Township on 28 May. At the ceremony, member of the State Peace and Development  Council Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council and Commander of  South-West Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann said Wakema Bridge linking Yangon and  Wakema is being built after Bo Myat Tun Bridge in accord with the guidance of Head of State Senior  General Than Shwe.

He said road transport is important for Ayeyawady Division which is supplying crops and fish and  meat  which represent 35 per cent requirements of consumers in the country. Only when there is better   transport in the division,  can agricultural produce and fish and meat be brought to the consumers in a   short time, he said.

Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Saw Tun said Wakema suspension Bridge is on Yangon-Wakema  Road and its main bridge is 600 feet long. Shwelaung Bridge on Yangon-Wakema Road and   Ayeyawady River Bridge, 8,989 feet long, linking Magway and Minbu are also under construction, he   said:

Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun drove Stand Pipe at No 4 pile with the use of Vibro Hammer. The   commander, the minister and the deputy minister sprinkled scented water on the stand pipe and   performed rituals of golden and silver showers.

(5)  Seminar on Bond Market opens

YANGON, 29 May-Seminar on Bond Market jointly sponsored by Ministry of Finance and Revenue,   Tokyo Stock Exchange of Ministry of Finance of Japan and Myanmar Securities Exchange Centre Co   Ltd was held at the Traders Hotel this morning.

Minister U Khin Maung Thein said capital market plays a pivotal role in investment of market-oriented   economic system and effective use of the investment market Bonds are important investment in capital   market like stock and share, he added. Director Mr Yoichi Takahashi of Institute of Fiscal and  Monetary  Policy and Director Mr Hironori Sento of Tokyo Stock Exchange explained matters related to  the seminar.  The seminar continues tomorrow.



(6)  Ministry of transport holds first four-monthly work coord meeting

YANGON, 29 May-The Ministry of Transport held to first four-monthly work coordination meeting in  the  meeting hall of the ministry on Merchant Road here this morning. The minister urged all to  discharge  their duties energetically and seriously. He stated that it was targeted to provide transport  services to  21.543 million passengers, but actually, transport services have been provided for 23.063 million  passengers; success has been achieved by 107%. With regard to freight transport, success has
been  achieved by 120%. He spoke of staff welfare and agriculture and livestock breeding work.  Then, a  general round of discussions followed. The meeting will continue tomorrow.



(7) Chinese delegation from Yunnan Province arrives

YANGON, 29 May- At the invitation of Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, a nine-member   delegation led by. Chairman of Yunnan Province Legal Affairs Committee and Secretary of Yunnan   Province Political and Legal Affairs Commission Mr Qin Guangrong arrived here by air yesterday   evening. The guests called on Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing at his office this morning.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Director-General of MPF   Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, Head of Central Committee for drug Abuse Control and Narcotic Drug   Eradication Department Police Col Khin Aung and Head of Office U Nyan Linn.

Then, Director-General of MPF Police Maj-Gen Soe Win explained endeavours of drug eradication  being undertaken in Myanmar and arrangements being made for the 15-year narcotic drug eradication  plan. In the afternoon, they called on Deputy Attorney General U Khin Maung Aye.

Then, they visited Thanlyin Bridge and Thuwunna Youth Training Centre. In the evening, Deputy   Minister Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung hosted dinner in honour of the Chinese delegation from Yunnan  Province.

(8)  Health Care Leadership and Management Course No 2/2000 opens

YANGON, 29 May -Health Care Leadership and Management Course No 2/ 2000 of the Health   Department under the Ministry of Health opened in the hall of Health Employee Training School in   Dagon Township this morning. Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein made an opening speech. In his   speech, the minister stressed the importance of concerted efforts for the implementation of health   objectives, and urged all to enlist public participation in carrying out public health care work. The
minister also called on all to work according to the schedule, to strive for further success of health  objectives and to prove their love for the nation by working harder and harder. A total of 25 doctors are   attending the course, which will last over two weeks.



(9) Refresher Course, Officers' Refresher Course open

YANGON, 29 May- A ceremony to open tithe Basic Telegraph Course, the Postal Account Refresher   Course and the Officers' Refresher Course was held at Communications and Postal Training Centre  this  morning. Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin gave a speech.



(10)  Minister inspects construction of bridges in Ayeyawady Division

YANGON, 29 May-Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Myint  Thein  and officials inspected Pantanaw-Shwelaung road section and repair of road on 27 May.  Ayeyawady  Division Superintending Engineer U Ye Myint Swe reported on progress  of Pantanaw- Shwelaung road  section. The minister said Shwelaung and Wakema bridges are being built and vehicles  can directly  reach Yangon from Wakema. He also gave instructions on use of construction materials
according to  set standard. The minister and party inspected approach road to Shwelaung Bridge. The minister then  gave instructions. The minister also inspected the site of Wakema Bridge Project.

(11) Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement meets UNICEF official

YANGON, 29 May-Mr John Bertrand Mendis, who will discharge duties at UNICEF Office in Yangon,   Myanmar, paid a courtesy call on Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein   Htwa at the minister's office this afternoon.

Also present at the call together with the minister were Director-General of the Social Welfare   Department U Sit Myaing,  U Than Oo and Head of Office of the Social Welfare, Relief and   Resettlement U Maung Pi.



(12)50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Myanmar observed

YANGON, 29 May- A symposium to mark the 50th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations  between the People's Republic of China and the Union of Myanmar was held at the office of the  Cultural Counsellor of the People's Republic of China on Khayebin Street in Dagon Township this  evening. Present were Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt and officials of the Ministry of Foreign  Affairs, retired Myanmar ambassadors to PRC, Patron of Foreign Correspondents Club U Sein Win,  Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe,  journalists and writers, Ambassador of PRC Mr Liang Dong and staff and Chinese representatives.

Minister Counsellor of Chinese Embassy Mr Tang Ying extended greetings. Ambassador Mr Liang  Dong poke of the purpose of holding the ceremony. Ambassador Mr Liang Dong said that he had  acknowledged the efforts of Myanmar leaders for economic development of the nation, the further  strengthening of national solidarity and the improvement of living standard. Then, he thanked those  present on the occasion, and wished the further friendly ties of Myanmar and China, which brought the  ceremony to an end.

(13) Myanmar delegation leaves for Geneva

YANGON, 29 May- Sub-leader of Myanmar delegation Director-General U Soe Nyunt of Labour  Department together with Director-General Dr Tun Shin of the Attorney-General's Office,  Director-General U Khin Maung Yi of Central Trade Disputes Committee of Ministry of Labour, Director  General U Kyaw Tint Swe of International Organizations and Economic Department and Deputy  Director-
General U Thaung Tun of Ministry of Foreign Affairs left here by air yesterday evening to attend  the 88th Annual Assembly of International Labour Organization to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 30 May  to 15 June.



(14) Codeine phosphate liquid 20.5 litres seizes in Kawthoung

YANGON, 29 May-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar  Police Force, acting on information, searched Yadana Aung Motorized Boat docked at the shed of  Wayhinmo Fish Company in Shwehintha Ward, Kawthoung, on 13 May and arrested Aung Than, son  of U Hlaing Bwa, of U Sein Paul Street, Myothit Extension Ward, Myeik, together with 205 cans of  drug
liquid 20.5 litres which include codeine-phosphate. The drug liquid was said to have bought from  Ranong, Thailand. Further information led to the arrest of Thein Tun, son of U Maung Aye of Taungpyo  Village, Sakhanthit Village-tracts Kyunsu Township, San Yu (a) Ohn Pe, son of U Nyan Tun, of the  same village, and Nay Win Naing, son of U Aye San, Kyatchaung Village of the same township, who  involved in the drug trafficking. Action is being taken against the four according to law.

 Myanmar Karatedo Federation President's Cup Karatedo Championship opens

 YANGON, 29 May- A ceremony to open Myanmar Karatedo Federation President's Cup Karatedo  Championship co-sponsored by MKF and Maykha Group was held at Aung San Gymnasium this  morning, with an address by Chairman of Committee for Ensuring Success of Myanmar Sports  Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay. Also present on the occasion  were
Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint,  Secretary-General of MOC Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung  Htaik Deputy Director-General Lt-Col Thein Aung, patrons of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation,  President of MKF Police Col Khin Maung Tun (Retired), officials, Chairman of Maykha Group Dr Ye
Naing Win and officials, guests and spectators. Mayor U Ko Lay opened the championship. After the  opening ceremony, athletes took part in the men's and women's Kumite and Kata events. On 30 May  morning, final matches will be held at the gymnasium.

 C-in-C (Air)'s Championship Table Tennis Tournament opens

YANGON, 29 May-A ceremony to open C-in-C (Air)'s Championship Table Tennis Tournament was  held at Thura Tun Sein Hall of Flying Training Base, Meiktila on 29 May, attended by acting Base  Commander Col Thura Khin Maung Win. Also present on the occasion were senior military officers of  the Office of Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, invited guests of Meiktila Station, officers, other  ranks, and players of Flying Training Base and Ground Training Base.



(16)  Illegal drug possessors get five years

YANGON, 29 May-The Lashio Township Court handed down a sentence of five years' imprisonment on  a drug possessor on 10 February 1999. Members of Lashio Township Police Force, acting on  information, searched Tun Thein, 45, of Ward 1, Lashio at 5 pm on 23 December 1998 and found  0.0005 kg of heroin. Action was taken against him in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic  Substances
Law. The court handed down five years' imprisonment under Section 15 and three years'  imprisonment under Section 16 (C) on him to serve concurrently.



(17)  30 Monyo Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 29 May-Thirty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Monyo  Township, Bago Division. Thirty members of Monyo Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord,  resigned by sending letters of resignation to Monyo Township Multiparty Democracy General Election  Sub-commission and the party concerned on 8 November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate  in party politics of NLD.
