(1) Secretary-1 inspects border area development and narcotic drug eradication in Shan State (East)

YANGON, 26 May- Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races  Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by  ministers, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and  departmental heads,  left here by Tatmadaw flight yesterday morning and arrived in Kengtung, Shan  State (East), at 9.20 am. Then, the Secretary- 1 and party, accompanied by Commander Maj-Gen  Thein Sein and Commander  Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, arrived at Mongla in Shan State  (East) where they were  welcomed by national race leader U Sai Lin and members, departmental  personnel and local people.

The Secretary-1 and party  first paid obeisance to Dwe Nagara Shwe  Pagoda in Mongla and inspected the scale model of the monastery to be built on Dwe Nagara Shwe  Pagoda Hill.  National race leader U Sai Lin and officials reported on matters related to the building. Then, the  Secretary-l and national race leader U Sai Lin poured water at Bo tree planted near the archway of the   pagoda. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Museum on Narcotic Drug of Shan State
(East) Special Region-4 and inspected display of booths on endeavours of narcotic drug eradication  before 1988 and endeavours of narcotic drug eradication after 1988. The Secretary-1, Commanders and   Ministers signed in the visitors  book. Next, the Secretary-l and party went to the entrance of the   Union of Myanmar-the People s Republic of China border area and had a documentary photo taken in   front of the border reference pillar. Officials conducted the Secretary-l and party round the Gems
Museum and Mongla Myoma Market being built under the regional development programme.

The  Secretary-1 gave instructions on tasks to be completed in time. Then, the Secretary-1 and party   inspected construction of Mongla-Kengtung Road. In the meeting hall of Mongla Hotel, the Secretary-1   met national race leader U Sai Lin and party and gave instructions on matters related to regional   development. U Sai Lin and U Min Ein said at least once a year, the Secretary-1 comes to their region   and looks into the requirements for the development of the region. The Gems Museum foundation of  which was laid by the Secretary-1 at the tenth anniversary marking the achievement of peace in the   region will be completed during this year.

A new hotel and a new market are under construction. A project is in progress to supply clean water,   which is in accord with the standard prescribed by WHO, for the growing ciliates will be completed this   year. More roads will be built in the region; agriculture especially cultivation of poppy substitute crops   is being extended. Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Khin Maung also
took part in the discussions.

After looking into the requirements, the Secretary-1 said paddy cultivation should be extended to   ensure regional food sufficiency. Efforts should be made to prevent recurrence of drug trafficking in the   region, which has already declared the opium free zone. Kokang region, Wa region and the regions in   the eastern Kengtung are gaining significant progress due to prevalence of peace and stability. Due to  the assistance of the government and the efforts of the national race leaders, the region is achieving
marked development and the people s living standard is improving.

In Pangsan, the Secretary-1 and party met Wa national race leaders led by U Pau Yu Chan. Lt-Gen  Khin  Nyunt said they were there to look into the requirements in developing the region. U Pau Yu Chan  said  there was not a peace of development in Wa region in the 20 years during which it was under the   domination of the Burma Communist Party. It has developed with greater momentum during the ten  years periods since achieving of regional peace.

Secretary-1 and Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt presented quality paddy and corn seeds to U Pau Yu Chan and   party. He also presented cash assistance to departmental personnel who are discharging duties in   Pangsan. Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein   Nyunt Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya  Oo also met the departmental personnel. The Secretary-l and party inspected the town on a
motorcade. In Kengtung, the Secretary-l and party paid obcisance to Khemarathta Standing Buddha  Image. At Maha Myat Muni Pagoda, they paid homage to the stupa and presented cash donations for   it. This morning, the Secretary-I and party inspected the General Hospital Project (200-bed) of Shan   State East in town.

At the briefing hall, the Secretary-1 heard a report on progress in implementing the project presented   by Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein, Deputy Minister Dr Mya Oo and officials. The Secretary-1 and   party then inspected Nurses Training School Project. Officials presented reports on completed portions   of the project and building of a health office. Though the project was scheduled to be completed in   December 2000, efforts should be made to complete it in September this year, stressed the  Secretary-l. During inspection of the General Hospital (Kengtung) the Secretary-l and party inspected  the various  wards and sections. At Kengtung College Project, officials explained to them the progress  of work.

The Secretary-l and party then inspected Shan State (East) Sports Ground Project. They also visited  harp playing courses conducted by Shan State (East) USDA at No 5 Basic Education Middle School.  In  Monghsat Township, they inspected the Wonhon Farm. The Secretary-1 and party met Wa national   leader U Pau Yu Yi and party at Wanhon Farm and discussed mattress related to regional  development  and drug eradication. U Pau Yu Yi reported on agriculture of the region, transport and  trade of Iychee and other crops, and building of roads and bridges for development of the region.

Afterwards, Maj-Gen Thein Sein explained matters related to transportation for development of the   region. The Secretary-1 presented gifts to the Wa national leader and party as well as strains of  high-yield paddy and corn. Then, the Secretary- 1 and party inspected the department store in  Wanhom region. The Secretary-l then visited Mekyant Orange Farm where he inspected cultivation of  orange and seasonal fruits and vegetables, water supply system and nursery of orange. He gave  necessary
instructions to the officials. The Secretary- 1 and party arrived back here by air via  Monghsat. Yesterday evening, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung met the Shan  State (East)  Education Officer, the Kengtung Township Education Officer and school heads of  Kengtung Basic  Education Primary Middle and High Schools at the office of Shan State (East)  Education Officer.

YANGON, 26 May- A reception and photo exhibition to mark the 25th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Myanmar and Socialist Republic of Vietnam took place at the Summit Parkview Hotel on Ahlon Road in Dagon Township at 6 pm today, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr. Daw Khin Win Shwe. Also present on the occasion were Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint,
ministers, deputy ministers and their wives, Ambassadors of Foreign Embassies in Yangon and their wives, Ambassador of SRV to Myanmar Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa and wife, embassy staff,  directors-general, deputy directors-general and heads of department and special guests.

YANGON, 26 May- Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun met President Mr Z Brooch of Z Brooch co Ltd. Israel at his office at 3 pm today. Also present on the occasion were officials of the Government Office.


(4) Minister inspects Plywood, furniture factories

YANGON, 26 May-Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone today inspected Plywood Factory No 1 in Kyimyindine Township, Plywood Factory No 2 and Furniture Factory No 5 in Hline Township, Furniture Factories Nos 1, 2, 3 in Ahlon Township and No 4 Furniture Factory in Thuwunna. During the inspection of the factories, he coordinated with officials the target for 2000-2001 fiscal year, the tasks  to be extended, and availability of raw materials.

(5) Minister meets Chinese, Indian entrepreneurs

YANGON, 26 May - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met with Chairman of Tianjin Machinery Import and Export Corporation (Group) of the People s Republic of China Mr Sun Jian Rong and party at his office at 10 am today. The minister also received Mr Monaj Mohankar of Titagarh Paper Mills co Ltd of India and party at the same venue at 4 pm Also present at the calls were Deputy Minister  Brig- Gen Thein Tun and directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises.


( 6 ) Health care service provided in Wetwun, PyinOoLwin

YANGON, 26 May-Under the arrangement of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council, specialists and surgeons from Mandalay, Patron of Mandalay Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association Dr Daw Tin Linn Myint and officials and surgeons of Myanmar Medical Association (Mandalay) went to Wetwun Station Hospital in PyinOoLwin Township as a field trip on 24 May. They rendered health care services to 674 patients without charge and gave lectures on health education.
Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Commandant Brig-Gen Tin Oo of PyinOoLwin Station and officials inspected their tasks. At Wetwun Village Basic Education Middle School, the talks on health  education was held.


( 7 ) USDA Secretariat Member inspects tailoring, computer courses in Sagaing Division

YANGON, 26 May- Secretariat Member of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Minister for Culture U Win Sein inspected the tailoring course co-sponsored by ChaungU Township USDA and Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association at the office of ChaungU Township USDA on 24 May.

A total of 40 trainees are attending the 40-day course. After wards, U Win Sein met secretaries and executives of Sagaing Division and District USDAs. At the meeting, he spoke of carrying out public welfare tasks, ensuring efficiency of members of the association and implementing the future tasks laid down by the annual meeting. Then, he visited the computer diploma course of Sagaing Division USDA and met the trainees there. Altogether 44 trainees are attending the 16-month course.

( 8 ) Commander inspects establishment of Nyaunghnapin Vegetable Cultivation and Production Centre

YANGON, 26 May - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, accompanied by Yangon Division Commissioner of General Administration Department UThein Swe, Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Ma Tu and
officials, inspected Nyaunghnitpin Vegetable Cultivation and Production centre being undertaken at Nyaunghnapin Village in Hmawby Township this afternoon. At the briefing hall, U Tin Maung Win of Yangon Division Irrigation Department explained the tasks being carried out at the centre. Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than gave instructions to officials on the construction of roads at the centre.


( 9 ) Spoken English Course No 3 of MAPT concludes

YANGON, May-The concluding ceremony of Spoken English Course No 3 of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading was held at the MAPT Office at the corner of Merchant Street and Pansodan Street this morning in conjunction with the l opening ceremony of Courses No 4 and No 5. Brig-Gen Pyi Sone made a speech on the occasion, stressing the importance of spoken English in trade. A total of 16 trainees attended Course No 3, and 46 trainees are attending the two sixth-month courses.


( 10 ) Basic SS Cable Course, Reader Course conclude

YANGON, 26 May-The Basic SS Cable Course and the Reader Course concluded at Communications and Postal Training Centre of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications this morning, with an address by Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Lt-Gen Win Tin.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said under the arrangement of training programmes for  2000- 2001 fiscal year, the training centre has conducted seven training courses including the present  two courses and brought out 61 trainees against the target of 73 courses and 1,236 trainees at the  training centre. The Cable Course provides basic knowledge for the trainees in the use of cables at  worksite of
Myanma Posts and Telecommunications and maintenance work.

 In conclusion, the Minister urged the trainees to continuously study ways to ensure durability and maintenance of cables.

(11) K 3 million worth of medicines donated to Defence Services Medical Services

YANGON, 26 May-A ceremony to donate K 3 million worth of medicines to Defence Services Medical Services was held at the office of Defence Services Medical Research and Development Committee at  9 am today. At the ceremony, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han accepted the donations by country manager Mr Neeraj Sharma of Ranbaxy Labs co Ltd. India and spoke words of
thanks.

Also present on the occasion were Staff Officer (Grade -1) (Health/ Hospital) Lt-Col Ye Tint, Lt-Col Thein Soe of No 1 Base Medical Store Depot, military officers and donors.


( 12 ) Finance Committee of Central Body of MWJA meets

YANGON, 26 May-The Finance Committee of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association held a co ordination meeting at Sarpaybeikman Building at the corner of Merchant Street and 37th Street this afternoon.

Present were Vice-Chairman of MWJA Managing Director of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Tin Kha (Tekkatho Tin Kha) and finance committee members. U Tin Kha made a speech on the occasion. The committee members discussed matters pertaining to cash donation for the holding of Central Body Meeting of MWJA in June.

(13) Ministry of Rail Transportation, related departments meet

YANGON, 26 May-A coordination meeting between the Road Transport Administration Department under the Ministry of Rail Transportation and related departments was held at the meeting hail of the department at 9 am today. Present on the occasion were Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung and deputy ministers, heads of departments and officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister U Pan Aung said the Head of State gave guidance to cooperate among departments for success of the tasks, urging the officials concerned to present difficulties encountered and to make coordination among them to ensure success of the tasks.

C-in-C s (Navy) Championship Cup Soccer Tournament begins

YANGON, 26 May-The opening ceremony of Commander-in-Chief s (Navy) Championship Cup Soccer  Tournament was held at the sports ground of Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Headquarters this  afternoon. On behalf of the Commander-in-Chief (Navy), Acting Commander of the Headquarters  Captain Tha Hsan attended and made a speech on the occasion. Present also were Captain Naval  Staff (Navy) Captain Kyaw Tin Hla, Captain San Win, officers and athletes. A total of
nine soccer  teams will take part in the tournament. After the ceremony, Commander-in-Chief s (Navy) Office team  met Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Headquarters team.

20th Provost Marshal s Trophy Volleyball Tournament continues

YANGON, 26 May-The 20th Provost Marshal s Trophy Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) Provost  Units Volleyball Tournament continued at Hline Gymnasium this morning. In women s event, Provost  Criminal Investigation Reinforcements Unit beat No } Provost Company (Airy 3-0. In men s second  division, Central Provost Unit beat No 3 Provost Company 3-0, No 767 Provost Company beat No 7  Provost Company 3-0 and No 666 Provost Company beat No 2 Provost Company 3-1. In men s first  division, No 1/2 Provost Company (Navy) beat No 969 Provost Company 3-0 and No 262 Provost Company beat 868 Provost Company 3-0. The tournament continues tomorrow.


(16) Committee for Extended Breeding and Production of Prawn meets

YANGON, 26 May -The Committee for Extended Breeding and Production of Prawn held its 1/2000 coordination meeting at Fisheries Department on Hsimnin Street in Ahlon Township this morning. Chairman Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe made a speech on the occasion. Vice-Chairman Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein and committee members reported to the meeting on the work done. Then, Deputy Minister U Aung Thein took part in the discussions. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the Minister
Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe.

(17) Men arrested with 1,959,000 stimulant tablets, pistol in Myawady

YANGON, 26 May- A combined team comprising members of Defence Services Intelligence and Myanmar Police Force arrested three men together with 1,959,000 stimulant tablets bearing WY  brand, one M-20 pistol and a magazine in a house in Myawady, Kayin State, on 13 May. Acting on a  tip-off, the authorities searched the house of U Maung Aung in Ward 4, Myawady, and found Yan Kwan Hmyin (a) Ahhua of Hopaik Village, Lashio Township, Sai Maung Ba (a) Law Hsan of Ward 9, Lashio, and Win Hlaing of Mining Ward 3, Namtu, with the drugs and the pistol. On further investigation, the authorities managed to arrest Aik Thi of 289, Maha Aungmyay Township, Mandalay, to whom the drug belongs, and accomplice Khala (a) Alon of Hopaik Village, Lashio Township, at Moe Guest House in Myawady and another accomplice Sai Hsa Tun of Tawyakyaung Street, Ward 10, Lashio, at Oo Guest
House in the same town. Action is being taken against the six according to law.


(18) 76,457 voters of Chanmyathazi Township unanimously submit petitions for dissolving pessimist NLD

YANGON, 26 May-A total of 76,457 voters from Chanmyathazi Township Constituency, Mandalay Division, expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolving it at rallies held in Basic Education High School No 7 and BEHS No 26 in the township on  28 April.

A total of 10,200 people from five wards attended the rally in the sports ground of BEHS No 7 in the township. On behalf of voters, U Myat Tun expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Afterwards, U Myint Oo, U Ngwe, U Win Naing Oo, U Myo Win and Daw Myint Myint Soe  from respective wards, on behalf of all voters, presented petitions signed by the people to member of  Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Subcommission U Win Maung. Similarly, 12,000 people from seven wards rallied in the Sports Ground of BEHS No 26 in the township. On behalf of voters, Daw Nyo Nyo, expressed no sup port for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it.

Afterwards, U Saw Hla Tun, Daw Ya Min Hlaing Zar Than, U Myint Kyi, U Ko Ko Oo, U Khin Aye, U Soe Win Hlaing, U Myint Zaw and U Aung Min of respective wards, on behalf of all voters, Presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election  Sub-commission U Myint- Soe. The ceremonies ended with chanting of the slogan  Our Three Main National Causes . There are 76,525 voters in Chanmyathazi Township. The number of people, who
expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it, was 76,457 people or 99.91  Per cent.


(19) 103 Mingaladon Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 26 May-One hundred and three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Mingaladon Township, Yangon Division. One hundred and three members of Mingaladon Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mingaladon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 24  May
2000 as they no longer wish to participate in party politics of NLD.
