( 1 ) Minister meets Chinese visitorsYANGON, 23 Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met Assistant President of China Metallurgical Construction (Group) Corporation of the People's Republic of China Mr Xu Xiang Chun and party at his office at 11 am today. Also present were directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises and officials.
( 2) Ministry of Industry-2 holds coordination meetingYANGON, 23 May The Ministry of Industry-2 held a coordination meeting on implementation of targets for 2000-2001 fiscal year at the ministry this morning. Present were Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Aung Thein Linn and Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises, officials and guests. First, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin made an assessment of weak and strong points of the production in 1999-2000 and urged them to manufacture quality products to meet the target in 2000-2001. Then, Deputy Ministers and officials reported on matters related to their respective sectors. Afterwards, enterprises and factories were presented prizes for boosting production in 1999-2000 fiscal year. Children of staff were also presented stipends. Later, the Minister gave the concluding remarks.
( 3 ) Minister meets Ambassador of IndiaYANGON, 23 May-Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung met Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saran at his office at Myanma Radio and Television on Pyay Road at 11 am today. Also present were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director-General U Khin Maung Htay of MRTV, Managing Director U Tin Kha of News and Periodicals Enterprise and Adviser to Minister for Information U Kyaw Min.
( 4 ) Minister meets visitors from Singapore and IndiaYANGON, 23 May-Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint met Chairman Mr Larry Wallden and party of Caterpillar Asia Pte Ltd. Singapore at 1 pm and Chairman Mr Goenka and party of Indo Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industries, India at 3 pm today at his office respectively. Also present were officials of the Ministry.

YANGON, 23 May- Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Vice-President of Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts Mr John Young at his office at 3 pm today. Also present were Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism, Managing Director U Kyi Tun of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services and officials.
( 7 ) Minister for Commerce meets guests from India and Ambassador of Bangladesh
YANGON, 23 May- Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met Chairman Mr G L Goenka of Indo-Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industries, India and party at his office at 1 pm today. They cordially discussed mutual interests on commerce, trade and investment between the two countries. The minister also met Ambassador of Bangladesh Mr Ahmed Rahim at his office at 3.30 pm today.
( 8 ) Deputy Minister meets Ambassador of the United KingdomYANGON, 23 May- Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung met Ambassador of the United Kingdom Dr John Jenkins (LVO) at his office at 10 am today. Also present were Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, Director-General of Prisons Department U Kyaw Tun and Head of Office U Nyan Lin.
( 9 ) MGE to hold Mid-year Myanma Gems Emporium in OctoberYANGON, 23 May-Myanma Gems Enterprise will hold Mid-year Myanma Gems Emporium in October this year, and gems and jewelry of local gem entrepreneurs will be available at the emporium at foreign exchange. MGE will make arrangements to deal in disbursing advance loans to Myanmar citizen entrepreneurs in accordance with the set rules to ensure be smooth circulation of money of the entrepreneurs.
A total of 437 foreign and 183 local gem merchants attended the 37th Myanma Gems Emporium and there was an increase in proceeds from sales of gems. Foreign gem merchants, especially jade merchants, will attend the for the coming mid-year gem emporium. MGE and Myanma Foreign Trade Bank are jointly rendering services for ensuring speedy issuing of proceeds from Myanma gem sales. Those wishing to present and sell gems and jewelry at the mid-year gems emporium may contact MGE between 5 June and 31 August for gems and jewelry inspection and fixing prices for them. ( 10 ) Sport NewsMyanmar sports contingents recount experience
YANGON, 23 May-The victorious Myanmar rowing team recounted experience at the National Indoor stadium in Thuwunna this morning. Present on the occasion were Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik, and officials of Myanmar Rowing Federation and Myanmar rowing team. Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint spoke on the occasion.
Officials recounted experiences from advanced training programme on canoe rowing and world canoe rowing championship held from 20 April to 3 May in Belgium, those from the women's kayak tournament held in Japan from 28 to 30 April, and those from the first Kunming international dragon boat race held in Kunming, China, from 8 to 10 May. In the afternoon, the minister attended the ceremony to recount experience from the 10 th Malaysian Disabled Sports Tournament and the first ASEAN disabled sports tournament held in Malaysia from 13 to 20 May at the same venue. Col Aung Thein, leader of Myanmar disabled sports team, and officials recounted experiences from the tournaments.
Myanmar youth beat Chinese Youth 7-0
YANGON, 23 May- Under the arrangement of promoting friendly relations between the Union of Myanmar and the third Myanmar- Chinese youth friendly soccer match was held at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna this evening.
Before the match , leaders of the two sides exchanged commemorative pennants. In the friendly match, Myanmar youth bead Chinese youth 7-0.
( 11 ) Courses conducted to uplift USDA members' qualificationsYANGON, 23 May- Member of the Secretariat of Union Solidarity and Development Association U Win Sein met with trainees of Executives' Management (Multiplier) Course No 7 conducted by Shwebo District USDA in Thabyenyo Hall at Shwebo Degree College in Shwebo, Sagaing Division, yesterday morning. Secretary of Shwebo District Union Solidarity and Development Association U Tin Myint reported to the minister on implementation I of the association, accomplishments in organization work and participation in public welfare tasks.
Accompanied by officials, USDA Secretariat U Win Sein, who is also the Minister for Culture, inspected the rebuilding of Shwebon Yadana Mingala Palace built by King Alaung Min Tayagyi in 1115 ME. The king is the founder of Yadana Theinga town.
After inspecting renovation of the museum on the Konboung-dynasty, which is a former court house, the minister and party observe the Bonsatuhlut chamber where stone inscriptions erected by King Hsinbyushin were kept and the bronze statue of King Alaung Mi Tayagyi. After coordinating the requirements, the minister spoke of the need to make efforts for earliest completion of the royal treasury and the royal treasury and the royal records office.

Then, the Minister and party inspected the site of the shipyard and gave instructions on cultivation of crops in vacant lands. Afterwards, the Minister gave instructions on work and inspected the shipyard.
( 13 ) Myanmar Industrial & Commercial Directory 2000 introducedYANGON, 23 May - A ceremony to introduce the Myanmar Industrial & Commercial Directory 2000 of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry was held at Western Park Restaurant this morning.
Present on the occasion were Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, President of UMFCCI U Win Myint, heads of departments and invited guests. Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone said the government is rendering assistance for the progress of private enterprises by revoking laws and principles obstructing the advancement of the nation's market oriented economy since the system was adopted in 1988. There are now 33,081 registered private entrepreneurs in Myanmar; and 76 per cent of the GDP is from the private sector. The minister then explained the significant facts of the book. Managing Director of the company U Nay Lin Aung and President of UMFCCI U Win Myint also gave speeches. The company then presented 100 copies of Myanmar Industrial & Commercial Directory to the State Peace and Development Council Office, 100 copies to the Ministry of Commerce, 200 copies to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 300 copies and K 100,000 to UMFCCI and K 30,000 to Shwegondine Child Care Centre of Social Welfare Department.
( 14 ) Minister inspects factories in YangonYANGON, 23 May - Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung inspected industries under his ministry in Yangon this morning. Accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thein Tun and heads of departments, the minister inspected the oil purification branch of No 1 Soap Factory of Myanma Pharmaceutical Industries in Mayangon Township.
After inspecting the process in producing purified oil, the minister spoke of the need to grow kitchen crops in the factory compound. At his meeting with officials, the minister gave instructions on development of the factory and future plans. The minister and party then inspected the No 1 Mayangon Textile Factory where school uniforms and garments of colorful designs are produced. He also met with official of the factory.

( 16 ) Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Sayadaws honouredYANGON, 23 May- A ceremony to honour Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Sayadaws Ashin Silakkhandhabhivamsa and Ashin Vamsapalalankara and 31 Sayadaws, who passed the 52nd Tipitakadhara Selection Examination and were nurtured by Mingun Tipitakadhara Sayadaw, was held at Mahathantithukha Buddhist Missionary Centre in Natchaung Ward of Tamway Township this morning.
The congregation recited Namo Tassa three times. Then, congregation of wut associations sent Metta into the universe. Joint-Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Meiktila Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Candima administered the Five Precepts. Next, Head of Pariyatti Department of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara (Bhamo) delivered a sermon, followed by Sharing of merits.
( 17 ) Minister inspects Yaybawthoung Bridge ProjectYANGON, 23 May-Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Myint Thein and officials, inspected Yaybawthoung Bridge Project yesterday. Superintending Engineer U San Nyein reported to the minister on the project. The minister gave instructions on completing the bridges as targeted, the set standards and ensuring worksite safety. Yaybawthoung Bridge across Bawle River will be 1940 feet long. Piers of the bridge has been built and Piers 2 and 3 are under construction.

( 18 ) Myanmar-India entrepreneurs sign MoU for mutual cooperationYANGON, 23 May- A ceremony to sign the memorandum of understanding for mutual cooperation of Indo-Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Myanmar Pulses, Beans and Sesame Seeds Merchants Association was held at the meeting hall of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry Building at No 504/ 506 on Merchant Street this afternoon. President U Win Myint J and Chairman Mr GL Goenka extended greetings. They then discussed investment opportunities and promotion of bilateral trade. (19) Myanmar cultural delegation leaves for VietnamYANGON, 23 May-A 15-member Myanmar cultural delegation led by Director U Aung Win of Production Division of Fine Arts Department left here by air this morning for Vietnam in commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between Myanmar and Vietnam.
(20) Voters of Madaya Township Constituencies 1 and 2 submit petitions expressing no confidence in NLD representatives-elect Dr Aung Wai, U Than LwinYANGON, 23 May-Eligible voters of Madaya Township Constituencies 1 and 2, Mandalay Division, submitted signed petitions expressing no confidence in Dr Aung Wai and U Than Lwin elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representatives of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Madaya Township Constituencies 1 and 2 and no support for them at the rallies in Lamaing and Yenatha village-tracts in the Constituency-1 and Kyauksarit (North) and Shinhla village-tracts in the Constituency-2 on 30 March. A total of 4,200 people rallied in Lamaing Village.
On behalf of voters, Daw Cho Cho Win expressed no confidence in Dr Aung Wai of NLD and no support for him. Afterwards, U Toe Maung, on behalf of all voters, presented declarations expressing no confidence in Dr Aung Wai of NLD and no support for him signed by voters to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub commission Township Medical Officer U Tin Win. A similar rally was attended by 4,000 people in Yenatha Village.
On behalf of voters, U Nay Win expressed no confidence in Dr Aung Wai of NLD and no support for him. Afterwards, U Pho Kyaw, on behalf of all voters, presented declarations expressing no confidence in Dr Aung Wai of NLD and no support for him signed by voters to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Aung Thin. Similarly, 5,200 people lied in Kyauksarit North Village; On behalf of votes, Daw Khin Mar Wai expressed no confidence in U Than Lwin of NLD and no support for him. Then, U Shwe Moung enables of all votes, presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Than Lwin of NLD and no support for him signed by voters to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Headmaster (Retd) U Taik Kyi.
Likewise 3,500 people rallied in Shinhla Village. On behalf of voters, U Zaw Tint expressed no confidence in U Than Lwin of NLD and no support for him. Then, U Hla Shwe, on behalf of all voters, presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Than Lwin of NLD and no support for him signed by voters to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Aung Thin. Out of 43,711 eligible voters in Madaya Township Constituency-1, 27,153 or 62.12 per cent voted for Dr Aung Wai of NLD in 1990 Election.
Out of 60,093 voters in the Constituency-1I, the number of voters who presented declarations expressing no confidence in Dr Aung Wai of NLD and no support for him totalled 59,446 or 98.92 per cent at present. Out of 37,004 eligible voters in Madaya Township Constituency-2, 23,364 or 63.13 per cent voted for U. Than Lwin of NLD in 1990 Election. Out of 41,803 voters in the Constituency-2, the number of voters who presented petitions expressing no confidence in U Than Lwin of NLD and no support for him totalled 41,390 or 99.01 per cent at present.
(21) 8 Bago Township NLD members resign of own accordYANGON, 23 May-Eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Bago Township, Bago Division. Eight members of Bago Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Bago Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 23 November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
( 22 ) Man gets imprisonment for possession of drugsYANGON, 23 May- Myanmar Police Force of Mohnyin Township, acting on information, searched the house of Hla Hsaing, 42, son of U Kwan Jut of Theinin Ward, Mohnyin Township, on 9 November 1998 and arrested him together with 0.0002 kilo of heroin. Action was taken against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Mohnyin Township Court handed down a sentence of six-year imprisonment under Section 15/16 (C).
