( 1 ) Secretary-l receives adviser to Thai PMYANGON,17 May-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received the adviser to the Prime Minister of Thailand Squadron Leader Prasong Soonsiri and party at the guest house of Ministry of Defence this morning.
Also Present at the call were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Director-General of ASEAN Affairs Department U Aye Lwin, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and Ambassador of Thailand to the Union of Myanmar Mr Pensak Chalarak.
( 2) Secretary-l lays cornerstone for construction of Aungbawdi Hsutaungpyi Pagoda in Dagon Myothit (South)
YANGON, 17 May-Ceremonies to lay cornerstone for the construction of Aungbawdi Hsutaungpyi Pagoda and to present cash for the pagoda were held at the construction site of the Pagoda on Ward 20 in Dagon Myothit (South) at 7 am today, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Adviser at the State Peace and Development Council Office U Arnt Maung acted as master of ceremonies. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party received the Nine Precepts from Secretary of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Magway Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara. Members of Upahtaka Group presented paritta thread, paritta sand and paritta flower to members of the Sangha who recited the parittas. Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party presented golden casket, golden bricks and alms to members of the Sangha. Yadana Nawarat casket, cornerstones and stone plaque were conveyed to the designated places at the pagoda.
Then, Secretary -1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt placed a golden casket and laid the Padamya brick in the centre of the pagoda. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt also placed the stone plaque at the centre of the pagoda. At the auspicious time, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister U Win Sein, Minister U Aung Khin, Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Minister Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe laid the cornerstones and sprinkled scented water on the foundation. Meanwhile, members of the ?Sangha recited Jayamto Bodiyamule Gatha.
Then, Secretary -1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt placed a golden casket and laid the Padamya brick in the centre of the pagoda. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt also placed the stone plaque at the centre of the pagoda. Meanwhile, members of the Sangha recited Jayamto Bodiyamule Gatha. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party performed the ritual of golden and silver showers to mark the success of the ceremony. Then, cash presentation ceremony for the pagoda was held. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented K 500,000 donated by State Peace and Development Council to Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin for Aungbawdi Hsutaungpyi Pagoda. Well-wishers presented K 9.76 million to Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party for the pagodas.

( 3 ) Recording of religious treatises into CDs meritorious deed, noble missionary service Distribution of CD-ROMs on Sixth Buddhist Synod in Myanmar begins
YANGON, 17 May - A ceremony to mark the completion and distribution of CD-ROM on the Sixth Buddhist Synod in Myanmar was held at International Business Centre this afternoon, addressed by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt .
Also present on the occasion were ministers, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments, Daw Wa Wa Tun of Cooperative Store Syndicate Limited 1, officials, donors and guests. The Secretary-1 said and minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin said the Department for Promotion and Propagation of the ?Sasana of the Ministry of Religious Affairs reached agreement with Cooperative Store Syndicate Limited at Mya Yeik Nyo Hotel on S July 1998 to record the Three ?Pitakas into CD. Daw Wa Wa Tun then explained different stages of work in implementing the project and plans to install it in the Website of Internet. She then presented 100 set of CDs to the Secretary- 1. Minister U Aung Khin presented CDs to donors. The Secretary-1 and party inspected the exhibition marking the completion and distribution of the CD-ROMs.
( 4 ) Nyaunghnaninkwin Vegetable Cultivation and Production Centre to be established in Hmawby
YANGON, 17 May -A coordination meeting to establish Nyaunghnapinkwin Vegetable Cultivation and Production Centre being implemented by Yangon Division Peace and Development Council was held at Nyaunghnapinkwin Village in Hmawby Township, Yangon Division at 4 pm today, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo. Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than reported. Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin presented supplementary reports. Speaking on the occasion, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said Nyaunghnapinkwin region is an area where vegetables are cultivated and Yangon Division Peace and Development Council will establish Nyaunghnapinkwin Vegetable Cultivation and Production Centre in the region. There are many interested persons in the project of vegetable centre, said Lt-Gen Tin Oo, and spoke of the need to give assistance to grow vegetables and to sell them in the market. Then, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party inspected soil preparations by machines to grow vegetable and reclamation of land in Nyaunghnapinkwin region. Mustard, lettuce, carrot, cabbage, egg-plant, tomato. Okra, peas and bean, noko, chilly, garlic, onion, potato, ridged gourd, cucumber, bitter gourd, pumpkin and others were cultivated in Nyaunghnapinkwin vegetable centre. The vegetables of the centre will be sold in tax-free markets and other markets.
( 5 ) Secretary-3 inspects building of Yangon-Ngasutaung- Bago Highway
YANGON, 17 May-Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint inspected building of a new Yangon-Ngasutaung-Bago Highway this morning. The Secretary-3 inspected building of the road with the use of heavy machinery. Minister Col Thein Nyunt reported to the Secretary-3 on the project. In giving instructions, the Secretary-3 said officials were to raise the momentum of the project with the help of men and materials to complete the project in time as the monsoon had started. The road will link the junction and the point on Bago-Phaunggyi-Taikkyi Highway which is under construction, near Hlayhlaw-in. It will also be between Hanthawady Intentional Airport and Bago. The road is scheduled to be built as an earth road before the monsoon and to upgrade it to a highway in the open season.

( 6 ) Minister inspects Hline Bridge (Shwepyitha) Project
YANGON, 17 May-Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun. accompanied by Deputy Ministers U Tint Swe and Brig-Gen Myint Thein, inspected implementation of the project of building a river across Hline River in Shwepyitha Township this morning. The bridge will be completed soon. It will be 3415 feet long and have a 52-foot-and-five-inch motorway with six-foot pedestrian lanes on both sides. It is being built with steel frames and reinforced concrete piers. It can bear 60-ton loads.
( 7 ) Chinese youth football team arrives
YANGON, 17 May-A 26-member Chinese youth football team arrived here by air this afternoon to play goodwill football matches to promote friendship between Myanmar and the People's Republic of China. The team was welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Director General of Sports and Physical Education Department Lt-Col Thein Aung and officials. The team will play goodwill football matches on 19 and 23 May in Yangon and 21 May in Bago.
( 8 ) Myanmar disabled sports contingent gets 43 medals
YANGON, 17 May- Myanmar disabled sports contingent taking part in the Tenth Malaysian Disabled Sports Tournament and the First ASEAN Disabled Sports Tournament being held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, won 43 medals including 21 gold, 12 silver and 10 bronze on 15 and 16 May.
( 9 ) Buddhist devotees observe sacred Fullmoon Day of Kason with full essence
YANGON, 17 May-The Buddhist people of all ages throughout the country poured water at Bo trees in the precincts of pagodas and monasteries today, being a sacred religious day for the Buddhists. Today is the Fullmoon day of Myanmar month Kason. As Fullmoon Day of Kason is related to the life of Buddha the day is a sacred day for the Buddhists. It is a fine tradition of the Buddhists to celebrate the Kason Nyaung-ye-thun-pwe on the Fullmoon Day of Kason every year. On Fullmoon Day of Kason, the Buddhists pour water at the Bo tree usually planted at a comer of a pagoda precinct as a gesture of dedication to Lord Buddha. Lord Buddha attained enlightenment under a tree on the Fullmoon day of Myanmar month Kason and delivered His Fir t Sermon, the ?Dhamma Cakka, to the five disciples under such a tree. In Yangon, ceremonies to pour water at Bo trees were held at the Shwedagon, Sule, Botahatung, Kaba Aye, Kyaikkasan, Maha Wizaya, Tooth Relic ( Yangon) Meilamu, Shwephonpwint pagodas and Koehtatgyi, Chaukhtatgyi, Ngahtatgyi Buddha images. At the pagodas and Buddha images, the Buddhist people took Sabbath, did meritorious deeds and paid homage at pagodas and obeisance to the monks. They offered soon, lights, scented water and flowers to the pagoda and Buddha images.

( 10 ) Consecration ceremony of Bronze Buddha Image held
YANGON, 17 May-A ceremony to consecrate the Bronze Buddha Image to be kept at the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University was held at the prayer hall of ITBMU on Dhammapala Hill in Mayangon Township this morning. Present at the ceremony were Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Director-General of Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint and staff of ITBMU and guests. Members of the Sangha consecrated the Image, cast in Zana Mudra. Afterward, the minister and officials presented the offertories to the Sangha.
( 11 ) Deputy Minister inspects warehouses of MAPT
YANGON, 17 May - Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan and officials inspected warehouses of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading in Ahlon Township this morning. Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan inspected the warehouses and gave instructions to officials. The deputy minister and party also inspected warehouses group in Botahtaung Township and warehouses in Mingala Taungnyunt Township and gave necessary instructions to officials. Deputy Minister Brig- Gen Kyaw Hsan attended to their needs.
( 12 ) Myanma Insurance pays largest compensation for fire claim
YANGON, 17 May Myanma Insurance on 2 May 2000 paid K 34.63 million to Myanmar Mayflower Bank Ltd. It is the largest amount of compensation for a single fire insurance claim in Myanmar. Except the compensation for an aviation claim, the amount is the highest payment for a claim of a single insurance policy in the nation's history. Located at 225, Hlinethaya Industrial Zone 2, six warehouses under the loan of Myanmar Mayflower Bank were insured by the bank at the state-owned Myanma Insurance for fire coverage. The warehouses were destroyed by fire- on 21 March 2000. The insured submitted the claim together with the requirements to Ml on 20 April 2000. Settling the claim within 12 days after the submission of the claim form, MI paid K 34.63 million to the claimant by offsetting K 370,000, which is the value of the recovered property, from the total insured amount of K 35 million. MI, an enterprise of the Ministry of Finance and Revenue, is making utmost efforts in settling claims of all types of insurance in the most convenient and quickest way.

( 13 ) Drug trafficker sentenced to 8 years
YANGON, 17 May-The South Okkalapa Township Court passed a sentence of eight years imprisonment on a drug trafficker on 16 January 1999. Regional Police Force members searched Myo Myint, 29, son of U Kyaw Soe, of 23rd Street, Ward C, Latha Township, at Ward 5, South Okkalapa Township at 1.40 pm on 29 August 1998 and found the heroin weighing 0.136 gm on him. He was tried under Section 15/16 (C) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law and sentenced to eight years imprisonment under section 15/16 (c).
( 14 ) 10 Nawnghkio Township NLD members resign of own accord
YANGON, 17 May-Ten members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Nawnghkio Township, Shan State. Ten members of Nawnghkio Township NLD, Shan State, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Nawnghkio Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 24 March 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
