(1)  Prime Minister of SRV Mr Phan Van Khai and    Madame Nguyen Thi Sau and goodwill delegation     conclude visit to Myanmar
 
YANGON, 15 May- The goodwill delegation led by Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai and Madame Nguyen Thi Sau left here by Special Flight this morning at the conclusion of the visit to Myanmar at the invitation of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing.

Before their departure, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing met Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai and Madame Nguyen Thi Sau at Seinle Kantha State House at 8.45 am.

Then, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing together with Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai and Madame Nguyen Thi Sau left Seinle Kantha State House for Yangon International Airport in a motorcade . At 9.20 am, the Visiting Prime Minister and wife and party together with Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing arrived at Yangon International Airport. Afterwards, the visiting Prime Minister and wife again farewell to Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing.

Students at the airport chanted best wishes for the well-being of the Visiting Prime Minister and wife and Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and for further strengthening friendship between the two countries.

When the special flight carrying the goodwill delegation took off at 9.50 am, Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party waved goodbye to the guests from the special lounge of the airport.


( 2) National Convention Convening Commission holds coord meeting

YANGON, 15 May-The National Convention Convening Commission held the coordination meeting at the meeting hall of the Commission this afternoon.

Present on the occasion were Chairman at the Commission Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Chairman Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and members. At the meeting, the secretary of the Commission and officials of the National Convention Convening Work Committee and the National Convention Convening Management Committee reported on matters related to the National Convention. Members of the Commission took part in the discussions. In the evening, Chairman of the Commission Maj-Gen Saw Lwin coordinated matters related to the reports and gave the concluding remarks. Then, the meeting came to a close.

(3) Tenth annual conference of MMCWA concludes

YANGON, 15 May-The tenth annual conference of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association continued for the final day in the meeting hall of the multi-purpose building of the association at the corner of Parami and Thanthuma Roads in South Okkalapa Township this morning.

Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe presided over the meeting with Project Officer of MMCWA Dr Nwe Oo as master of ceremonies. The chairperson proposed future tasks of the association, and the meeting approved them. Then, Dr Nwe Oo and Dr Nwe Ni Ohn were elected for the vacant posts of Joint Secretary-2 and member of the central committee respectively. The two took an oath in the presence of the chairperson. Then, a general round of discussions followed. The conference came to a close with concluding remarks of the chairperson.


( 4 ) Minister for Industry-l inspects shops of ministry

YANGON, 15 May-Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung inspected shops of the ministry at the building of Mayangon Township War Veteran Association at Mayangon Junction in Mayangon Township this morning. The minister inspected the various kinds of clothing, cotton and nylon mosquito-nets, shirts, scarves, blankets, vests and robes at the shop of Myanma Textile Industries, foodstuff and soft drinks at the shop of Myanma Foodstuff Enterprise, umbrellas, slippers and consumer goods, various kinds of paper, ceramics and ceramic plates at the shops of Myanma General and Maintenance Enterprise, Myanma Ceramics Industries and Myanma Paper and Chemical Industries and medicines and cosmetics of Myanmar Pharmaceutical Factory. The minister gave instructions on sales of goods. The Ministry of Industry-1 is selling goods of its factories at tax-free markets and its shops daily.


(5) Minister for F&R meets official of Tokai Bank Ltd of Japan

YANGON, 15 May-Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met Director and Head of Asia Mr Gen Tomii of Tokai Bank Ltd of Japan at his office this morning. They discussed matters of mutual cooperation. Also present was Governor of Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung.

(6) Coordination meeting of Ministry of Construction held

YANGON, 15 May-Coordination meeting of Ministry of Construction for 2000 was held at Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development on Bogyoke Aung t San Road this morning.

Present were Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun. Deputy Ministers U Tint Swe and Brig-Gen Myint Thein, the directors-general and the managing director, heads of departments, superintending engineers of states and divisions and roads, bridges, buildings and airport projects and officials. Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun delivered a speech.


(7) Ambassador U Linn Myaing accredited to the Netherlands

YANGON, 16 May-The Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar has appointed U Linn Myaing, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the French Republic, currently as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.


( 8 ) Course for indigenous medicine inspectors opens

YANGON, 15 May- Course for indigenous medicine inspectors jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Health and World Health Organization opened at Indigenous Medicine Department on U Wisara Road this morning.

Present on the occasion were Acting Minister for Health and Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, officials, course instructors and trainees. On behalf of the Minister for Health, Director-General of Indigenous Medicine Department Professor Dr Kyaw Myint Tun delivered a speech. The course is being attended by 27 trainees.

( 9) National Agricultural Meteorology Course opened

YANGON, 15 May- A ceremony to open the National Agricultural Meteorology Course co-organized by Department of Meteorology & Hydrology, International Cooperation Department of Israel and Ministry of Foreign Affairs was held at the meeting hall of Department of Meteorology & Hydrology on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning, with an address by Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe. Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe gave an opening speech.

Then, Ambassador of Israel Mr Gad Nathan and Deputy Director Mrs Ziporagat of Meteorology Department of Israel spoke on matters related to the course. Altogether 30 trainees seven from Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, 11 from Ministry of Transport, three from YCDC, two from Ministry of Forestry, two from Ministry of Education, two from Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development and three from private agricultural companies are attending the course which will last up to 26 May.


(10) Coord meeting held on development and   greening tasks of Hlinethaya

YANGON, 15 May- A coordination meeting on the development and greening tasks of Hlinethaya Township was held at the office of Engineering Department (Road/Bridge) in Hlinethaya this morning. Present were Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice Mayor Col Maung Pa and officials. Officials reported tasks being carried out with the use of the charts. The Vice-Mayor inspected cultivation of kitchen crops, quarry and tar mixing and attended to the needs. Accompanied by officials, the Vice-Mayor inspected Hanthawady Nursery Farm and buying and selling of Hanthawady Tax-free Market.


(11) Training Course No1 for Supervisors of MSLE begins
 
YANGON, 15 May - Training Course No 1 for Supervisors of Myanma Small Loans Enterprise under the Ministry of Finance and Revenue was opened in the training hall of the enterprise on Pansodan Street this morning. Present on the occasion were Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, said that Myanma Small Loans Enterprise is disbursing loans to the people in need of money at a reasonable interest rate for a short period, and income received by the enterprise is added to the finances of the government.

As much as the enterprise has to perform its work year after year, supervisors and employees are required to be able to work more efficiently. Altogether 45 supervisors of branch offices from states and divisions under Myanma Small Loans Enterprise, are attending the Two-week course.

(12) Internal Revenue Department holds meeting

YANGON, 15 May-The Internal Revenue Department under the Ministry of Finance and Revenue held a meeting to assess its work performance in the 1999-2000 fiscal year and to coordinate work to be done in the 2000-2001 fiscal year in the meeting hall of the department on Pansodan Street this morning.

The meeting was attended by Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein and officials. The minister spoke of how important revenues are to the country, how the government is using revenues and how the department levies revenues is keeping with the changing and improving market-oriented economic system and urged all to work in accord with the State policies. The meeting was adjourned in the evening, and will continue tomorrow.


(13) C License Level Football Coach Course opens

YANGON, 15 May-A ceremony to open C License Level Football Coach Course sponsored by Asia Football Federation and Myanmar Football Federation was held at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna, this morning. Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint made a speech. Also present on the occasion were Principal of Defence Services Self-Defence and Sports Institute Col Sein Tin Win, Deputy Director General Lt-Col Thein Aung of Sports and Physical Education Department Course Instructor Mr Chan Yong Chong of AFF, guests and trainees. Course Instructor Mr Chan Yong Chong made an introductory speech. Then, the trainees were introduced to the officials. The course will continue till 27 May.


(14) Myanmar Youth, Canada AIA draw 2-2 in soccer friendly
 
YANGON, 15 May- Myanmar Youth team and AIA Club of Canada drew 2-2 in second soccer friendly at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna this evening. Before the match, President of Myanmar Football Federation Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik and Manager of AIA Club Mr Brian Avey greeted the footballers.

(15 ) 46,640 stimulant tablets seized in Phakant

YANGON, 15 May - A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force acting on information searched No 1/24, Ward 1, Hmawshan Village, Seikhmu village-tract, Phakant Township, Kachin State and arrested Hlyo-yinmyint, Kameik and Labyawnawtaung of Bhamo Township, Sai Win Maung of Namhkam and Maung Maung Aung of Lashio together with 46,640 stimulant tablets bearing the word  WY , a jeep without license and K 110,000 on April 28. Action is being taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


( 16 ) Drug trafficker gets eleven years

YANGON, 15 May- Assistant Divisional Judge s Court, Yangon passed a sentence of eleven-year imprisonment on a drug trafficker on 28 January 1999. Members of special anti drug squad of Yangon, who acted on information, searched No 452, Theinbyu Road. Hpomyay Ward Mingalataungnyunt Township and seized Ma Naing Naing Soe, 31, for possession of 17.9622 grams of heroin at 12.45 pm on 30 June 1997. She was tried under Section 19 (A)of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law and sentenced to eleven year imprisonment under section 19.


(17) 8 Pyinbongyi Village NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 15 May-Eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pyinbongyi Village in Bago Township, Bago Division. Eight members of Pyinbongyi Village, Bago Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Bago Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 3 January 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
