(1) Visiting SRV Prime Minister and wife and party tour Bagan-NeaungU

YANGON, 14 May-Visiting Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai and  Madame Nguyen Thi Sau and party, currently here at the invitation of Chairman of the State Peace and  Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and wife  Daw Kyaing Kyaing, accompanied by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and Daw Khin Myo Oo, Myanmar Ambassador-designate to Vietnam U Khin Aung and Daw Khin Maw  Swe, Ambassador of Vietnam to Myanmar Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa, Director General Thura U Aung Htet  of the Protocol Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and wife Daw Saw Mea. arrived at Bagan-NyaungU Airport by Special Aircraft yesterday afternoon.

Next, the visiting Prime Minister and wife and party together with Chairman of Magway Division Peace  and Development Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw went to Defence Services Guest House. Afterwards, the  guests proceeded to Ananda Temple built by King Kyansittha in Bagan. Director of Archaeology  Department (Bagan Cultural Heritage Region Branch) U Aung Kyaing and officials, members of the
Pagoda Board of Trustees welcomed the guests. The guests paid obeisance to the pagoda and signed in the visitors  book. The visiting Prime Minister and wife made donations towards the funds of the  pagoda. The Pagoda Board of Trustees presented a lacquer painting to them.

At Myanma Lacquerware Institute Principal U Yu Thein and officials welcomed and conducted the  guests round the Institute and Myanma Lacquerware Museum. On arrival at Bagan Archaeological  Museum, Curator U Myint Soe Aung and officials welcomed the visiting Prime Minister and wife and  party. Then, Curator U Myint Soe Aung and officials conducted the guests round the booths of the  museum. The visiting Prime Minister signed in the visitors' book of the museum. In the evening,  Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw and Daw Mu Mu Win hosted dinner at Defence Services Guest House in Bagan in honour of visiting Prime Minister of  the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai and Madame Nguyen Thi Sau and party Before and  during the dinner, variety dances and songs were presented by Myanmar music troupe. After the  dinner, visiting Prime Minister Mr Phan Van Khai and Chairman Brig-Gen Thein Zaw exchanged  souvenirs. The guests spent the night in Bagan. This morning, the visiting Prime Minister and wife and party left Bagan-NyaungU and arrived here at 9.25 am.


(2) Secretary-1 attends opening of branch of Yoma Bank Ltd in Hlinethaya

YANGON, 14 May -A ceremony to open new building of Yoma Bank Ltd (Hlinethaya branch) and FMI  City Shopping Centre was held in FMI City in Hlinethaya Township this morning, attended by  Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Chairman of Yoma Bank  Ltd U Thein Wai extended greetings.

Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein said Yoma Bank Ltd is a successful private  bank providing banking services to the financial needs of the people with modern facilities. Opening of  the branch in Hlinethaya where industrial zones lie will help develop economic enterprises in the region.  Chairman of Yoma Bank Ltd U Thein Wai presented a painting of the bank building as commemorative  gift to the Secretary-1.  Director of FMI Garden Development Co Ltd U Soe Myint presented related documents and a painting of the bank building to U Thein Wai. Minister U Khin Maung Thein, Minister  for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and U Thein Wai formally opened the branch and FMI City  Shopping Centre. The Secretary-1 and party performed rituals of golden and silver showers to mark the  opening of the branch. The Secretary-1 and guests then inspected the branch, banking services and  FMI City Shopping Centre.

(3) Secretary-l attends fourth cash donation ceremony for construction of Mahasi Thiriyadana four-storey building

YANGON, 14 May-The fourth cash donation ceremony for the construction of Thiri Mingala Mahasi  Yeiktha Thiriyadana four-storey building and ceremony to honour Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma  Jotikadhaja Sayadawgyi and Tipitakadhara Dbammabandagarika Sayadaw were held at Thiri Mingala Mahasi Yeiktha on Myawady Mingyi 1 Road, 51 Ward in Dagon Myothit (North) this morning, attended
by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Also present on the occasion were Mandalay Withudayon Kyaungtaik Zabumaw Sayadaw Agga Maba Pandita Bhaddanta Kundala and members of the Sangha, ministers, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, members of Thiri Mingala Mahasi Yeiktha Board of
Trustees, lay persons and well-wishers.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party received the Five Precepts from Tipitakadhara Dhammabandagarika Agga Maha Pandita Abhidhamma Paliparagu Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sumangala Lankara (Ph D). Then, Secretary-1 Lt Gen Khin Nyunt and party presented offertories to members of the Sangha. Well-wishers presented K 6.65 million to Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin for the construction of Thiri Mingala Mahasi Yeiktha Thiriyadana four-storey building. Tipitakadhara Dhammabandagarika Agga Maha Pandita Abhidhamma Paliparagu Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sumangala Lankara (Ph D) delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits. After
the ceremony, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt performed the ritual of golden and silver showers to mark the success of the ceremony.


(4) National Health Committee Chairman attends dinner to mark tenth annual conference of Myanmar  Maternal and Child Welfare Association

YANGON, 14 May - A dinner to mark the tenth annual conference of Myanmar Maternal and Child  Welfare Association was held at the multipurpose building of MMCWA at the corner of Parami and  Thanthuma Streets at 7 pm today, attended by Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of  the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu
Swe presented gifts to Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe extended greetings.

Chairperson Daw Kyu Kyu Swe presented prizes to Daw Khin Lay Thet for Supervisory Committees of Ayeyawady Division MCWA and Daw Khin Phyu Win for Supervisory Committee of Taninthayi Division MCWA. Vocalists presented entertainment programme to the guests. The dinner was then served. After the dinner, Vice Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented gifts to artistes.


(5) SRV Prime Minister visits Dagon BEHS No 1, International Port Terminal (Thilawa)

YANGON, 14 May - Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai and  delegation, visited the Basic Education High School No 1 in Dagon Township and Myanmar Intentional  Port Terminal (Thilawa) today. The Sixth Standard school girl Ma Poe Phyu Thein presented bouquet to  Prime Minister Mr Phan Van Khai.

The visiting Prime Minister and party observed the domestic science room, painting room, library,  language lab, multi-media lab and computer room at the school. School girl Ma Win Mar Wai extended  greetings to the guests at Dagon Thiri Hall of the school. School boys and school girls presented an  entertainment programme to the visiting Prime Minister and delegation. Vietnamese Prime Minister Mr  Phan Van Khai and delegation proceeded to Myanmar International Port Terminal (Thilawa) in Yangon South District and arrived there at 3.45 pm today. Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe presented gifts to Prime Minister Mr Phan Van Khai. Then, the visiting Prime Minister Mr Phan Van Khai and delegation  toured the Thilawa Port and left there in the evening.

(7) Minister meets Vice-Chairman of Gymnastics and Sports of SRV

YANGON, 14 May- Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye  Myint met Vice-Chairman of Gymnastics and Sports Mr Doan Thao, who accompanies the goodwill  delegation of Socialist Republic of Vietnam, at his office this morning. Also present at the call were  secretary-general of MOC Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung
Htaik and officials. They discussed bilateral sports matters.


( 8 ) Chief Justice meets Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Justice

YANGON, 14 May-Chief Justice U Aung Toe met Deputy Minister of Justice Mr Uong Chu Luu who  accompanies the goodwill delegation of Socialist Republic of Vietnam at his office this morning. Also  present on the occasion were Deputy Chief Justice U Than Oo and Director-General U Tin Aye of  Supreme Court.


( 9) First anniversary of Naing-Ngant Gon-Yi Magazine held

YANGON, 14 May-First anniversary of Naing-Ngant Gon-Yi Magazine published by Myanmar Writers  and Journalists Association was held at Sarpay Beikman Factory of Printing and Publishing Enterprise  on Pyay Road this evening, attended by Patron of Naing-Ngant-Gon-Yi Magazine Minister for  Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung. Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung said the ceremony is to honour literary  family, personnel who love literature and contributors. Literature is a piece of writing for enjoyment; it  comes from culture and is also a social link. Literature is a noble profession based on education and is a reliable instrument for national cause, he said. Next, Minister presented gifts to members of Magazines  Publication Committee and Executives Editors.

(10) 10th annual conference of MMCWA continues

YANGON, 14 May - The 10th annual conference of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association  continued for the second day at Multi-purpose Building of MMCWA at the junction of Parami and  Thanthuma Roads in South Okkalapa Township this morning. Chairperson of the Association Professor  Daw Kyu Kyu Swe presided over the conference and Project Officer Dr Nwe Oo acted as master of
ceremonies. In the morning session, Patron of Mandalay Division MCWA Supervisory Committee Dr Tin Linn Myint, Chairman of Bago Division MCWASC Dr Maung Maung Myint, Chairman of Kachin  State MCWASC Dr Joseph, Chairman of Sagaing Division MCWASC Dr Kyaw Shein, Chairman of Chin  State MCWASC Dr Swe Win, Chairman of Taninthayi Division MCWASC Dr Than Tun Oo, Chairman
of Mon State MCWASC Dr Than Win Naing, Secretary of Shan State (East) MCWASC Dr Zin Mar Oo and Chairman of Rakhine State MCWASC Dr Tun Tun Aung presented papers to the conference. Then,  delegates took part in the discussions. Afterward, Vice- Chairperson of the Association Dr Daw Khin
Win Shwe discussed matters related to the delivery rooms. The conference continues tomorrow.


(11) Minister inspects Asbestos Cement Plant

YANGON, 14 May-Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen  Kyaw Win, heads of department concerned and officials arrived at Asbestos Cement Plant of Myanma  Ceramics Industries in Wanatchaung village. Hmawby Township, this morning. Deputy Minister Brig  Gen Kyaw Win and officials reported on production and distribution of the plant to the minister. The  minister inspected production process of asbestos cement and tiles of the plant. In the briefing hall, the minister met responsible officials and service personnel and gave instructions on full capacity operation  of the factory for exceeding the set target in production, supply of raw materials, systematic storage of  the products and future tasks.

(12) Taekwondo Tournament begins

YANGON, 14 May-The Taekwondo Tournament organized by Myanmar Taekwondo Federation began  to mark the 25th Anniversary of setting up diplomatic ties between the Union of Myanmar and the  Republic of Korea, at Aung San Gymnasium this morning. Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee  Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint gave a speech and opened the tournament.  Among the spectators were Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea Mr  Chung Jung Gum and staff families and officials. The Ambassador also gave a speech. Then, the first  day matches began.


( 13 ) 30 Mingin Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 14 May-Thirty members resigned from National League for Democracy of Mingin Township,  Sagaing Division. Thirty members of Mingin Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own volition,  resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mingin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election  Sub-commission and the party concerned on 14 September 1999 as they no longer wished to participate
in party politics of NLD


(14) Drug-user given three and five years imprisonment

YANGON, 14 May- Members of Lashio Special Anti-Drug Squad, on information, arrested Pho Lon (a)  Win Naing Oo, 27, son of U San Tun of Ward 7, Lashio, on 23 September 1998, together with 0.00001  kilo of heroin. Action has been taken against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic  Substances Law. The Lashio Township Court handed down a sentence of three year imprisonment  under Section 15 and a sentence of five year imprisonment under Section 16 (C) on the culprit to serve concurrently on 13 January 1999.
