(1) SRV Prime Minister and delegation visit Mandalay

YANGON, 13 May -Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Phan Van Khai and Madame  Nguyen Thi Sau and goodwill delegation, currently here at the invitation of Chairman of the State Peace  and Development Council Prime Minister of Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw  Kyaing Kyaing, accompanied by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and wife,
Myanmar Ambassador-designate to Vietnam U Khin Aung and wife, Vietnamese Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa and wife, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung  Htet and wife and officials, left here by air for Mandalay this morning. Then, the Vietnamese Prime  Minister and wife together with Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint and wife went to  Defence Services Guest House.

 The Vietnamese Prime Minister and wife and party arrived at Mandalay Airports at 9.20 am today. The  Vietnamese Prime Minister and wife and party together with Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and wife  visited ?Myanansawkyaw Shwenandaw. Deputy Director of U Moe Kyaw Kyaw of Department of  Archaeology (Upper Myanmar) explained the history of ?Myanansankyaw Shwenandaw. Then, the
visiting Prime Minister and party observed the ?Shwenandaw. They went to cultural museum of  Department of Cultural Institute and the visiting Prime Minister signed in the visitors' book.

Prime Minister Mr Phan Van Khai and Madame Nguyen Thi Sau and goodwill delegation next visited U  Sein Myint's Gold Embroidery Workshop in Aungmyay Thazan Township. U Sein Myint conducted the  visiting Prime Minister and party round the workshop. U Sein Myint presented a gold embroidery of  Mandalay moat to Prime Minister Mr Phan Van Khai.

The visiting Prime Minister and party proceeded to Hsutaungpyi Pagoda on Mandalay Hill and the  Prime Minister signed in the visitors' book. Afterwards, the Vietnamese Prime Minister and wife and  party posed for souvenir photos together with Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and Minister Maj-Gen  Nyunt Tin at Hsutaungpyi Pagoda. Then, Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and wife hosted lunch in honour of the visiting Prime Minister and party at Nanmyo Guest House. After the lunch, Vietnamese
Prime Minister Mr Phan Van Khai and Madame Sguyen Thi Sau and Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and wife exchanged gifts. Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint presented souvenirs to the delegation.


( 2) MMCWA stands tall as strong association in the entire country Secretary-1 addresses tenth annual  conference of MMCWA

YANGON, 13 May-The Tenth annual conference of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association  was held at the multi-purpose building of MMCWA at the corner of Parami Road and Thanthumar Road  in South Okkalapa Township this morning, with an address by Chairman of National Health Committee  Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. The Secretary-1 said as is known to all, the State Peace and Development Council is making efforts for emergence of a peaceful modern developed nation with the cooperation of departments concerned, social organizations and the  people after laying down political, economic and cultural objectives. He said social measures actively  undertaken by MMCWA contribute toward nation-building tasks.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged the association to continue to make efforts in carrying out nation- building tasks in whatever role it may be, to strive to stand as an organization on which the people can  rely, realizing the lofty aims, to lead in organization for vitalization of national outlook of the entire  Myanmar women, for flourishing of Union Spirit among them and preservation of their cultural  traditions, to strive for perpetual existence of the association, which serves national interest and to strive to become an organization on which mothers and children rely, standing tall as a consolidated association of the entire women and wished the association successful in discharging national duties.  Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and guests viewed photos on activities of MMCWA. The l0th MMCWA  Conference continues till 14 May.

( 3 ) Abhidharnrna Pali specialist Sayadaw Sumangala Lankara (Ph. D) delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.

 YANGON, 13 May-A ceremony to honour on Tipitakadhara Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sumangala Lankara on his birthday and five members of the Sangha who passed Tipitakadhara Examination was held at five-storey Thiri Mingala Anandagonyi Kyaungdawgyi Tipitaka Maha Gandhayon Kyaungtaik in Ward 9, Mayangon Township, this afternoon, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

 The Secretary-1 said he learnt that Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sumangala Lankara took charge of the Tipitaka Maha Gandhayon Kyaungtaik, giving lectures on Pariyatti literature to 300 trainee members of the Sangha. The Kyaungtaik produces many members of the Sangha who passed Tipitakadhara, Dhammacariya, Pathamabyan and Nikaya Examinations yearly due to diligence and goodwill of the Sayadaw.  Next, members of the Sangha recited Parittas. The Secretary-1 presented offertories to the members of the Sangha who passed Tipitakadhara Examination. Tipitakadhara Dhammabhandagarika Agga Maha Pandita.


( 4 ) Secretary-1 inspects development  undertakings in Hlinethaya

YANGON, 13 May- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt,  accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Hlinethaya  Industrial Zone Management Office this morning.

Deputy Minister U Tint Swe, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa and officials reported to the Secretary-1 on  arrangements for developing Hlinethaya including extension of Hlinethaya section of Yangon-Pathein  Road and Hlinethaya section of Yangon-Nyaungdon Road into four-lane ones.

Then, the Secretary-1 gave instructions on planting shady trees and flowering plants on both sides of  the roads, construction of platforms and installation of platforms posts.

Next, the Secretary-1 and party inspected upgrading of Hlinethaya section of Yangon-Pathein Road,  Hlinethaya section of Yangon-Nyaungdon Road, greening tasks on both sides of the roads and  installation of lamp-posts. Thence, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to the construction site of  Aungzeya Bridge, and inspected fixing of steel frames to the bridge.

The Secretary-1 and party went to Housing Estate Project of Panhlaing Golf Course. Then, the  Secretary-1 inspected construction of the golf course and advanced housing estate and left there.


( 5 ) Wheelchairs donated for disabled persons

YANGON, 13 May-Members of Asian Industrial and Technical Development Association (AITDA) Inc  and Edogawa Rotary and donated wheelchairs for disabled persons at the Hotel Equatorial on Alanpya  Pagoda Road in Dagon Township this evening. Present on the occasion were Secretary-2 of the State  Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo and Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint.

Also present on the occasion were senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, departmental  heads, wellwishers members of (AITDA) Inc and Edogawa Rotary Club and guests. Leader of Edogawa  Rotary Club Mr Hiroshi Taguchi extended greetings. Chairman of AITDA Inc Mr Masayuki Matsumuro  explained the purpose of the donations.

Director of Medical Services of the Ministry of De fence Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han accepted documents  related to the donations presented by Vice-Chairman of Edogawa Rotary Club Mr Yokoyama Iwao.  Then, the Secretary-2 and the Secretary-3 thanked the well-wishers for their donations.

( 6 ) 10th annual conference of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association begins

YANGON, 13 May-The 10th Annual Conference of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association
was held at Multi-purpose Building of MMCWA at the junction of Parami and Thanthuma Roads in
South Okkalapa Township this morning. Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and
Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presided over the morning and afternoon sessions
respectively.

When the conference resumed in the afternoon, Vice-Chairperson of MMCWA Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe
presided over the conference. Secretary Daw Mya Mya Aye submitted the report of Chin State to the
conference, Secretary Daw Mandalay Division, Secretary Daw Oo Tin Aye the report of Rakhin State.

On the report of Yangon Division, Secretary Dr Aye Kyi Sein the report of Shan State (South), Secretary
Daw Sao Tin Mya the report of Shan State (North), Secretary Dr Zin Mar Oo the report of Shan State
(East) and Secretary Daw San San Myint the report of Ayeyawady Division. Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe
took part in the discussions. The conference continues tomorrow .


( 7 ) Minister inspects construction of laterite road

YANGON, 13 May-Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, accompanied by Deputy Minister U Kyaw Tin and directors-general of departments and officials, inspected progress in constructing the seven-mile and four-furlong long laterite road from Kya-in (East) Village in Hlegu Township to Yangon-Bago-Mandalay Highway this morning. At the
construction site near the junction of Yangon-Mandalay Highway and No 3 Highway, Director U Soe Tint of Yangon Division Development Affairs Committee and officials reported to the minister on progress of the tasks.

The minister and party proceeded to Kya-in (East) Village and inspected temporary axis road. On completion of the road, there will be easy access to Hanthawady International Airport in Bago along Yangon-Mandalay Highway via Ngahsudaung Village.

Development Affairs Department and Progress of Border Areas and National Race Department are actively engaged in construction of the road.


( 8 ) Myanmar Garming Fisheries Lt opens new cold storage and ice factory in Myeik

YANGON, 13 May- Myanmar Gamming Fisheries Ltd, a joint-venture of the Fisheries Department and Garming Fisheries Co, opened a newly built cold storage and ice factory in Kangyi Ward, Myeik, Taninthayi Division, this morning.

It was attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo. The Secretary-2 left here for Myeik by Tatmadaw air craft this morning.

The opening ceremony of the cold storage and ice factory was also attended by Deputy Commander of Coastal Region Command Brig-Gen Tin Latt, divisional officials, and officials of the company. Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein and Managing Director Mr Ho Chi Hung Thomas of Myanmar Garming Fisheries Ltd formally opened the cold storage and ice factory. Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo formally unveiled the signboard of the cold storage and factory and went round it.
Commander Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung spoke on the occasion.

The Secretary-2 also made a speech. On the occasion, U Ba Thaw donated K 100,000 to Myeik District
Union Solidarity and Development Association and Managing Director Mr Ho Chit Hung Thomas a set
of computer to No 4 Basic Education High School of Myeik. The factory is located on the plot of 1.68
acres on C Street, Kangyi Ward, Myeik. It can storage 250 tons of processed marine products. The ice factory can produce 25 tons of ice a day. It was built at a cost of 1.17 million US dollars plus 142.77 million kyats. It will dress sea and fresh-water prawn. Waste Water Treatment Plant which can prevent pollution, is attached to the cold storage and ice factory.

( 9) Myanmar tentatively selected team beat AIA of Canada 7-0

YANGON, 13 May-Myanmar tentatively selected football team beat Athletes in Action Football Club of Canada 7-0 in the friendly match at Thuwunna Youth Training Centre this evening. In the first half, Myamnar scored two goals and five goals in the second half. On 15 May evening, AIA meets Myanmar Youth team.


( 10 ) Victorious Myanmar rowing team back from Kunming

YANGON, 13 May- The victorious Myanmar rowing team led by Vice-President of Myanmar Rowing and Canoeing Federation U Tun Oo arrived back here by air this evening after taking part in the 1st Intentional Invitational Kunming Dragon Boat Race in Kunming, the People's Republic of China, from 8 to 10 May. The team was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Chairman of Myanmar
Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and Daw Aye Aye, Deputy Director
General Lt-Col Thein Aung of Sports and Physical Education Department, President of MRCF U Sein
Tun, athletes, trainees of Sports and Education Combined Training Course of Sports and Physical Education Institute and relatives. Myanmar rowing team won four gold in the four events of the boat race.

( 11 ) Drug trafficker gets three years

YANGON, 13 May-The South Okkalapa Township Court handed down a sentence of three years' imprisonment on a drug traffickers on 19 January 1999.

The case was that acting on a tip-off, regional Police Force members searched one Hla Win, 29, son of U Maung San of No 71, Thura Lane, Ward 9, Mayangon Township, at the corner of 21st Street and Thayaykhittaya Street, Ward 5, South Okkalapa Township at 9.45 am on 21-1-98 and found 0.612 gm of heroin on him. He was tried under Section 15 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law and sentenced to three years under section 19 .


( 12 ) 20 Thegon Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 13 May-Twenty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Thegon
Township, Bago Division. Twenty members of Thegon Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Thegon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 17 January 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
