(1) Development of Monghsat, Mongton, Tachilek  townships in Shan State East in progress

YANGON, 9 May-Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye inspected development of Monghsat, Mongton and Tachilek townships in Shan State East on 8 May.  General Maung Aye and party left Kalaw for Heho by helicopter in the morning. After inspecting the town on a motorcade, the General met with officials at Monghsat Station Hall.

The ministers, the deputy minister for Agriculture and Irrigation and officials, who accompanied the General, also met with departmental personnel in Thiriyadana Hall. Local authorities presented requirements for developing Monghsat District and Township.

Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung inspected Township Information and Public Relations Office and TV retransmission station in town. Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut inspected Township Electric Engineers Office. In Mongton, the General and party inspected the town on a motorcade.

The ministers met with local authorities and officials at the Station Hall. This morning, the General and party inspected development of Tachilek Township. At Nagahnitkaung Monastery, the General and party paid homage to Buddha images and Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Dhammasiri of the monastery. The Secretary-2 explained the purpose of the inspection tour.

Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein explained facts about the township, cultivation of monsoon and summer paddy, efforts being made to ensure regional food sufficiency, progress in building Kengtung-Tachilek and Tachilek-Monghsat roads, development of Wanpon region find other matters. This morning, the Secretary-2, the commander and the ministers inspected progress in building Tachilek mongphyat-Kengtung Road. During their inspection of the Directorate of Border Trade, they heard a report on border trade and progress in building Tachilek-Mongphyat-Kengtung Road presented by the commander and officials.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions.

Tachilek-Mongphyat-Kengtung Road is 102 miles and two furlongs long. Honpang Company is implementing the task. The 30 foot wide road is projected to be competed within two years. The Secretary-2 and party inspected Hoyan Bridge on the road.  Back in Tachilek, they inspected the branches of Mayflower Bank Limited and Kanbawza Bank Limited.


(2) Coal-fired power station to be built in Tachilek  General Maung Aye attends cornerstone laying ceremony

YANGON, 9 May-Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye attended a cornerstone laying ceremony of a coal hued power station to be built by Golden Triangle Hydro Electric Power Pte Ltd under Mayflower Group in Tachilek this morning. At the auspicious time, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo bid the foundation and sprinkled scented water on it. The Secretary-2 laid the gem casket and stone plaque and sprinkled scented water.

Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut unveiled the stone plaque. Afterwards, General Maung Aye performed rituals of golden and silver showers to mark the ceremony.

Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein, Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut and Chairman U Kyaw Win reported on construction of the power station General Maung Aye then gave instructions.

The 12-mega-watt coal-fired power station will be built on 24.42 acres of land on the bank of Maikhaungno Creek, 1.5 miles north of Tachilek. The station will generate power more than the township needs and it will also supply power to Tachilek and its environs. It will cost over K 2 billion including more than six million.

(3) Mole Bridge commissioned Into service In  Momauk Township

Progress of Kachin State uplifts moral development of national races, vitalization and propagation of Union Spirit Mole Bridge commissioned Into service In Momauk Township

YANGON, 9 May- Opening ceremony of Mole Bridge (Kachin State) on Myitkyina-Bhamo Road was held at Mingala Pandal near the bridge in Momauk Township this morning, with an address by Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-1 said at a time when the State Peace and Development Council is endeavouring with perseverance for progress of Kachin State, emergence of new roads and bridges one after another, which will effectively help develop the state, gives much benefits to the national brethren of the region and new vigour to the might of the Union.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged the national brethren to effectively use the transport facilities built by the government with sincere cetena and to strive with might and main for further accelerating the development momentum of progress of Kachin State, regional economy and social life of the people.

Next, Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win said the he urged local people to promote their socio-economic life and to endeavour for regional development with the use of bridges and roads, which are fruits of goodwill of the government.

Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun said the Male Bailey Bridge lies near mile post 420/4 on  andalay-Lashio-Bhamo-Myitkyina Road in Momauk Township. It is 325 feet long and 10 feet 10 and half inches wide. It can withstand 20 tons of load and clearance is 72 feet wide and 6.5 feet high.

On behalf of local people, EC member of Momauk Township USDA Ma Li Li San expressed thanks for construction of the bridge. Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun presented commemorative pennants to the Secretary-l, the commander and national race leaders U Za Khun Ting Ring and U Zaw Mai. The Secretary-1 Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt presented gift to Deputy Superintending Engineer of Mole Bridge Project U Soe Thet. At the auspicious time, Commander Maj- Gen Kyaw Win and Minister Maj- Gen Saw Tun formally opened the bridge. The Secretary-1 and party walked on the bridge and greeted those present at the ceremony.


(4) Pivot fixed to Lawka Marazein Khaungphu Pagoda in Myitkyina

YANGON, 9 May-A ceremony to fix pivot to Lawka Marazein Khaungphu Pagoda was held at Khaungphu Village in Myitkyina Township this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-l and party climbed up atop of the pagoda and fixed the pivot. The Secretary-1 performed rituals of golden and silver showers to mark the success of the ceremony. The Secretary-1 and party shared merits gained.

(5) Secretary-l inspects development of Kachin State

YANGON, 9 May-Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party went to Lajayan Village, Moemauk Township, yesterday morning after attending the ceremony to open Nangsanyan Bridge in the township.

Together with U Za Khun Ting Ring, national race leader of Kachin State Special -Region-1, U Zaw Mai, national race leader of Kachin State Special Region-2, and member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, the Secretary-1 arrived in the village at 11 am.

They were welcomed there by Col Kyaw Oo Lwin of Bhamo Station and national race leaders of Kachin State Special Region-2. The Secretary-1 and party then proceeded to Lizer Village of Kachin State Special Region-2 on the border. At the guest house of the village, the Secretary-l met U Zaw Mai, U Za Khun Ting Ring, and nationals race leaders and had discussions on development of the region including border trade, tourism industry, and hydel power project.

Then, the Secretary-l presented gifts to U Zaw Mai and U Za Khun Ting Ring Next, the Secretary-1 and The Secretary-1 gave instructions on doing the departmental work systematically and correctly, saying border trade posts are opened with the aim of ensuring development of Kachin State.

The Secretary-1 and party then proceeded to Bhamo where they were welcomed by district and township officials and members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association. The Secretary-1 and party later arrived in Momauk in the evening by car via Bhamo. . The Secretary-l there inspected Momauk Basic Education High School and asked about staff affairs. Afterwards, he met township authorities, departmental officials and USDA members at the office of Township Peace and Development

In giving instructions, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said the government is endeavouring for ensuing equitable development in the entire nation and uplift of living conditions of all the citizens. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the border trade post in Kyauksakhan, Momauk, and left there.

Back in Bhamo in the evening, the Secretary-l met district and township authorities, departmental officials, and members of USDA and social organizations the Teingya Minkhaurng Hall.  At the meeting, he said, he and the ministers came to the region to attend the opening ceremonies of two bridges which have been built on Bhamo-Myitkyina Highway and a new road linking Mandalay, Bhamo and Myitkyina and to provided assistance for development of Kachin State.

In conclusion, he urged all departmental officials to lead in organization so that all national people will participate in the endeavors being made by the government for development of the nation and national economy and uplift of social life of the people with the objectives perpetual existence of the Union, perpetuation of sovereignty, prevalence of stability, peace and tranquillity and national solidarity in the nation.

Similarly, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Brig-Gen Than Tun met personnel under the ministry at Myitkyina Township Development  Affairs Department on 7 May morning and gave instructions.

In the same morning, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung met trainees of courses at Myitkyina Education College and faculty members and gave instructions.  On 8 May evening, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung inspected Bhamo Police Station and gave instructions on security, anti-narcotics, agriculture and cooperation in development tasks for the region.

Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo also met staff of Myitkyina People s Hospital on 7 May evening.

( 6 ) ASEAN Chiefs of Police Conference continues for second day

YANGON, 9 May- The ASEAN Chiefs of Police Conference hosted by the Union of Myanmar for the first time continued for the second day at the Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road this morning.  Present on the occasion were delegates of ASEAN member nations held the meeting at Konbaung Hall. They discussed illegal trafficking the narcotic drugs, progress in news collection system of ASEANPOL and multi-national assistance and cooperation in combating criminal cases. In Tagaung Hall, participants of the Group-B discussed trade and commercial crimes, cases related to banking services, credit card frauds, forgery of passports and transnational crimes. In Myanmar Ball Room, participants of the Group-C discussed the mutual training between police forces of ASEAN member nations, progress in establishment of the central committee for transnational criminal affairs of ASEAN member nations and drafting of joint communiqué

The Conference continues tomorrow. In the evening, Chairman of the Conference Director General of MPF Police Maj-Gen Soe Win hosted dinner at Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel in honour of leaders and members of police delegations of ASEAN member nations officials of INTERPOL and ASEAN Secretariat and officials.


( 7 ) ASEAN police chiefs play friendly golf

YANGON, 9 May- The friendly golf tourney of ASEAN police chiefs has been held in conjunction with the ASEAN Chiefs of Police Conference since 1985. In accordance with the tradition, the tourney took place at Myodaw Golf Resort this morning.

Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, police directors-general, police deputy directors-general and police senior officers of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Socialist Republic of Vietnam, officials of ASEAN Secretariat, senior police officers of MPF and YCDC took part in the tournament.

In individual handicap event, Police Director-Gen Mr Khoo Boon Hui of Singapore was first, Police Deputy Director-General Dato Mohd Jamil Bin Johari of Malaysia second and Police Deputy Director-General Reynaldo G Wycoco of the Philippines third. In team handicap event, MPF was first, Singapore Police Force Second and Malaysian Police Force third. After the tournament, they were served lunch by Chairman of YCDC Mayor U Ko Lay at Myodaw Golf Club.

(8) Minister meets farmers of model farm special zone project in Kyauktan

YANGON 9 Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by departmental officials, arrived at Nyaungwaing Agriculture Camp in Kyauktan Township this morning.

Managing Director U Tun Than of Myanma Agriculture Service reported on progress of the model farm special zone project in Kyauktan. Afterward, the minister met farmers of the model farm specials zone at Shwehmawwun Hall. Then, the Minister gave necessary instructions. Next, the minister and party inspected flow of water into Banbwegon Dram in Kyauktan Township and water Township and water supply.

Then, the minister proceeded to Dawbon Carpet Factory of Myanma Jute Enterprise in Dawbon Township. The Minister inspected process of production and gave instructions on works.


( 9 ) Minister inspects plants under Ministry of Industry-2

YANGON, 9 May-Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin accompanied by Deputy Minister Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw and responsible officials arrived at the area of the Ministry of Industry-2 in South Dagon Industrial Zone this morning. The minister and party inspected LPG Gas Cylinder Plant, Bolt & Nut Plant, Oxygen Gas Plant, Acetylene Gas Plant and gave necessary instructions to the responsible officials.


(10) Minister inspects Leather Factory and Myanma Umbrella Factory

YANGON 9 May Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung accompanied by heads of department concerned and officials arrived at Leather Factory of Myanma General and Maintenance Industries on Shwe Hintha Road in Hline Township this morning.

The factory Manager U Min Thein reported on production and distribution to the minister. The minister inspected various kinds of shoes produced by the factory. In the briefing hall, the minister met responsible officials and service personnel and gave necessary instructions. The minister also inspected production of rubber shoes, slippers, bags and pulses.

Then, the minister and party proceeded to Myanma Umbrella Factory on Insein Road in Hline Township and inspected the factory and production of umbrellas. The minister meet the responsible officials and service personal and gave necessary instructions on work to be done.

(11) Myanmar gets two gold s in 1st Kunming International Invitational Dragon Boat Race

YANGON, 9 May- Myanmar team participating in the 1st Kunming International Invitational Dragon Boat Race at Kunming, People s Republic of China, won two gold medals in today s events. In men s 600-metre 23oar event and women s and men s 600-metre event Myanmar teams won gold medals. On 10 May, men s 1,000-metre and women s 1,000-metre events will continue.


(12) World Environment Day Commemorative Photo Competition to be held

YANGON, 9 May- Public Education Committee for Nations Commission for Environmental Affairs will sponsor World Environment Day Commemorative Photo Competition  The entry must not be smaller than the size of 8" by 10" and not be bigger than the size of 10" by 12". Anyone may send four entries to the competition.

(13) 4.4 litres of Phensedyl seized in Monywa

YANGON, 9 May -  A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, while waiting at Khinaye Village, Pale Myo Thit, Monywa District, Sagaing Division, searched a Hino bus with number plate 3Ka/ 8982 travelling from Kalay to Monywa and arrested Ye Soe (a) Soe Min of Sannyo Ward, Kalay, together with 44 bottles of Phensedyl bearing the brand  JJ  weighing 4.4 litres on 23 April.

Action has been taken against him in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


( 14 ) 8 Indaw Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 9 May-Eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Indaw Township, Sagaing Division.

Eight members of Indaw Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Indaw Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 20 January 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
