(1)  Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe accepts  credentials of newly-accredited Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway

YANGON, 28 April-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar  Senior General Than Shwe accepted the credentials of the newly-accredited Ambassador's the Kingdom  of Norway to the Union of Myanmar Mr Lars Albert Wensell at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of  Defence at 9.30 am today.

Also present on the occasion were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen  Khin Nyunt, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the  Protocol Department.


(2)  General Maung Aye and wife attend ceremony to mark 80th birthday of Bhaddanta Kavindacara

YANGON, 28 April - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in- Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya  San attended the ceremony to mark 80th birthday of Presiding Sayadaw of Lashio Myole Sarthintaikkyi  member of State Sangha Maha Nayaka

Committee Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Kavindacara at Lashio Myole Sarthintaikkyi this morning. General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San presented 'soon' and alms to Bhaddanta Kavindacara. Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than Nwe, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and wife Daw Khin Cho Oo presented offertories to members of the Sangha.

General Maung Aye, wife Daw Mya Mya San and party shared the merits. Then, General Maung Aye  and wife Daw Mya Mya San and party performed the ritual of golden and silver showers. General  Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and party offered 'soon' to members of the Sangha.


(3)  General Maung Aye visits Nampaung Village, Lashio Township

YANGON, 28 April- Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in- Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye left here by Tatmadaw aircraft for Lashio, northern Shan State, yesterday afternoon.

Then, the General and party proceeded to Nampaung Village in Lashio Township by helicopter. In  Nampaung Village, the General inspected the affiliated Basic Education High School and met the  headmistress, teachers and officials of the village.

Afterwards, the General and party went round the village in a motorcade. Meanwhile, Minister for Home  Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, who accompanied the General, inspected Nampaung Police Station. Minister for  Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt and Deputy  Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung inspected the affiliated BEHS and gave instructions.

Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein inspected the station hospital in the village. The General and party  left the village for Lashio at 6.15 in the evening.

Accompanied by Commander Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo and officials, Secretary-2 Chief  of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, who accompanied the General, went to the regional battalion in Lashio in the evening and met Tatmadawmen and their families.

This morning, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, together with the commander and ministers, inspected the ornamental marble slab factory of Oriental Prosperity Co Ltd on Namtu Road in Lashio.

Later, the Secretary-2 and party inspected production of various ornamental slabs, equipment, and  production of briquette.

(4) Public servants enjoined to beef up moral strength and resolutely strive for accomplishment of  national goal

YANGON, 28 April - Secretary- 1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met  with employees of the Ministry of Industry-1 and gave instructions in the meeting hall of the ministry  this morning.

Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung reported on targets for 1999-2000 and achievements of the  Ministry of Industry-1, products of factories, production rate, distribution and sale of finished products,  financial matters, availability of industrial raw materials, the strength of staff, work for staff welfare and  targets for 2000-2001 . The minister presented awards for outstanding factories to respective factory  managers.

The Secretary-1 presented the first prize for Myanma Pharmaceutical Factory to Factory Manager U Zaw  Win.

The Secretary-1 said that at a time when the entire national people are making concerted efforts for  development of the nation, the success of tasks of the Ministry of Industry-1, a main driving force for  national development which is striving mainly to boost industrial might and production, coincides with  national interests.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged all to contribute to efforts for development of the industrial sector  with a view to enabling the Union of Myanmar to keep pace with other nations and to stand tall, to beef  up moral strength and to resolutely strive for the accomplishment of the national goal, to make efforts  for the extension and construction of factories and plants, the dissemination of modern technology, the  boosting of production and the production of goods of high quality, and to strive for the emergence of  a modern and developed nation and improvement of living conditions of the people by proportionately  combining the industrial sector and the agriculture sector.


(5)  Cornerstone laid for new four-storey building of  Dagon Township BEMS No 1

YANGON, 28 April -The cornerstone-laying ceremony for a new four-storey building of. Basic  Education Middle School No 1 in Dagon Township was held at the school on Pyay Road this morning,  attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and  Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. The Secretary-1 placed a casket containing nine precious  stones. Then, the Secretary-1 placed the stone inscription.

The Secretary-1 and party sprinkled scented water on the cornerstones. The Secretary-1 performed the  rituals of golden and silver showers to mark the successful completion of the ceremony.


(6) Minister for Industry-1 receives visitors

YANGON, 28 April- Chairman. of Pudumjee Pulp and Paper Mill Ltd of India Mr M P Jatia, together with  Managing Director of Daimaru Kogyo Ltd of Japan based in Yangon Mr O Ikeya, called on Minister for  Industry-1 U Aung Thaung at his office at 5 pm today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and  Directors-General and Managing Directors of the departments and enterprises under the ministry.

(7) Minister for Commerce receives foreign visitors

YANGON, 28 April- Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone received General Manager of  International Investments of Switzerland Mr Robert Locher and party at his office at 1 pm today.

They discussed matters related to bilateral economics and trade. Also present at the call were Deputy  Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan. Director-General of Directorate of Trade U Nyunt Aye and officials.


(8)  Cambodian Commerce Minister arrives

YANGON, 28 April-A delegation led by Minister of Commerce of Cambodia Mr Cham Prasidh arrived  here by air this evening to attend ASEAN Economic Ministers' Retreat and the Meeting of the ASEAN  Economic Ministers with the Economic Ministers from the People's Republic of China, Japan and the  Republic of Korea on East Asia Cooperation to be held here on 1 and 2 May.

They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Minister at the State Peace and Development  Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel and official.


(9)  Pilot Course No 63 of No 1 Flying Training School concludes

YANGON, 28 April-The Wings were presented to officers who completed Pilot Course No 63 of No 1  Flying Training School, Shante, at the concluding ceremony of the course held at Flying Training Base,  Meiktila, this morning On behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, Commander-in-Chief  (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than attended the ceremony and delivered an address. Lt-Gen Kyaw Than first
inspected the graduation company and the guard of honour and then took the salute by the companies.

Later, Lt-Gen Kyaw Than presented outstanding academic award to Lt Min Htet Kyaw, outstanding in  flying award to Lt Kyaw Aung and Best Pilot Award to Lt Thein Win Htut. Afterwards, the Commander- in-Chief (Air) delivered an address.

Afterward, Lt-Gen Kyaw Than presented the Wings to the officers.

(10)  Mayor hosts dinner in honour of trainees and excursion group members

YANGON, 28 April-Secretariat member of Union Solidarity and Development Association U Ko Lay  hosted dinner in honour of trainees of Advanced Management Course No 7 for USDA executives,  Management Course NO 21 for USDA executives and excursion group of national race from Hsihseng  region currently here at Mayhwa Restaurant this  evening. Head of Markets Department U Soe Myint presented a commemorative pennant to a trainee. Then, dinner was hosted in honour of the trainees and excursion group.


(11)  Deputy Minister attends opening ceremony of (MGM) Hotel and Restaurant

YANGON, 28 April - The opening ceremony of Metropolis Golden Myanmar (MGM) Hotel and  Restaurant was held at the hotel on Wadan Street in Lanmadaw Township this morning.

Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Commander of No 4 Military Region  Col Myo Myint formally opened the hotel and restaurant. After the ceremony, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Col Myo Myint and officials inspected the hotel.


(12) Minister meets civil engineers, officials of Myanma Railways

YANGON, 28 April- Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung met civil engineers and officials of  respective divisions of Myanma Railways at the Ministry of Rail Transportation this morning.

The Minister gave instructions on advanced maintenance for railroads and measures for prevention of  accidents. At the meeting, the Minister urged them to work for the convenience of passengers, minimize  loss and wastage of cargo and time, prevent accidents and abide by the existing laws, manuals,  instructions and orders and rules and regulations of Myanma Railways.

(13) 260,000 stimulant tablets seized in Lashio

YANGON, 28 April-A combined team comprising local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force  inspected a Landrover with number plate Gagyi/4415, near Yingwetaung short-cut, entrance to  Karmaing, Kachin State on 24 March. .

The car which was driven by Shaung Hsan, son of U Yan Lin, Hopaik village, Lashio, with the other  Launghsi, son of U Le Shaung Ywin, left Lashio for Phakant, and turned over at the place on 23 March.

Suspicious of the accident, the authorities inspected the area and seized 130 packets of 260,000  stimulant tablets bearing the words 'WY' hidden about 50 feet from the car.


(14) 525,581 voters of nine township constituencies in Ayeyawady Division submit petitions expressing no confidence and no support for nine NLD representative-elects

YANGON, 28 April-Eligible voters of Kyonpyaw, Pathein, Kangyidaunt, Yekyi, Myanaung,  Mawlamyinegyun, Pantanaw and Danubyu townships submitted signed petitions expressing no  confidence in U Mehn lonny of Kyonpyaw Township Constituency-1 and U Tin of Kyonpyaw  Township Constituency-2, U Tin Chaw of Pathein Township Constituency-l, U Nyunt Hlaing of  Kangyidaunt Township Constituency-1, U Nyunt Win of Yekyi Township Constituency-1, U Tin Oo of
Myanaung Township Constituency-1, U Tin Hla of Mawlamyinegyun Township Constituency-2, U Mehn Nyunt Thein of Pantanaw Township Constituency-2 and U Win Myint of Danubyu Township  Constituency-1 who were elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representatives of National League for Democracy  in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from respective townships and no support for them
at the rallies in nine places of the eight townships, four districts, Ayeyawady Division, on 21 March
morning.

A total of 66,061 local people of 279 wards and village-tracts in Kyonpyaw Township attended the rally  in Kwingyi Village of the township. On behalf of voters, entrepreneur Daw May Thu Naing of  Thayetthonbin Village expressed no confidence in U Mehn Jonny of NLD and no support for him.  Afterwards, agricultural entrepreneur U Thaung Sein of Akeigyi Village, on behalf of all voters,  presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Mehn Jonny of NLD and no support for him  signed by voters to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission
Township Education Officer U Myint Aung.

Out of 66,058 eligible voters in Kyonpyaw Township Constituency-1, 31,731 or 48.03 per cent voted for  U Mehn Jonny of NLD in 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election. Out of 79,857 voters, the number  of voters who presented signed petitions of no confidence in U Mehn Jonny totaled 66,061 or 82.72 per  cent.

At the rally in Kyonpyaw Township Constituency-2, agricultural entrepreneur U Tint Lwin presented  declarations expressing no confidence in U Tin of Kyonpyaw Township Constituency-2 of NLD and no  support for him signed by 65,196 voters of 272 wards and villages to Member of Township Multiparty  Democracy General Election Sub-commission retired bank manager U Win.

Out of 63,678 eligible voters in Kyonpyaw Township Constituency-2, 30,816 or 48.39 per cent voted for  U Tin of NLD in the Election. Out of 79,857 voters, the number of voters who presented signed petitions  of no confidence in U Tin totaled 65,196 or 79.90 per cent.

At the rally in Pathein Township Constituency-1, farmer U Myint Yi presented declarations expressing  no confidence in U Tin Chaw of Pathein Township Constituency-1 of NLD and no support for him  signed by 73,483 voters of 133 villages to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election
Sub-commission Township Education Officer Aye Myint.

Out of 76,777 eligible voters in Pathein Township Constituency-1, 28,829 or 37.55 per cent voted for U  Tin Chaw of NLD in the Election. Out of 85,472 voters, the number of voters who presented signed  petitions of no confidence in U Tin Chaw totaled 73,483 or 85.97 per cent.

At the rally in Kangyidaunt Township Constituency-1, merchant U Aye Tun Oo presented declarations  expressing no confidence in U Nyunt Hlaing of Kangyidaunt Township Constituency-1 of NLD and no  support for him signed by 43,724 voters of 195 villages to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy  General Election Sub commission Township Law Officer U Tin Nyo.

Out of 50,597 eligible voters in Kangyidaunt Township Constituency-1, 19,651 or 38.84 per cent voted  for U Nyunt Hlaing of NLD in the Election. Out of 58,170 voters, the number of voters who presented  signed petitions of no confidence in U Nyunt Hlaing totalled 43,724 or 75.16 per cent.

At the rally in Yekyi Township Constituency-1, farmer U Sein Hlaing Tin presented declarations  expressing no confidence in U Nyunt Win of Yekyi Township Constituency-1 of NLD and no support  for him signed by 54,398 voters of 55 wards and villages to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy  General Election Sub-commission Township Law Officer U Myo Nyeia.

Out of 58,576 eligible voters in Yekyi Township Constituency-1, 28,328 or 48.36 per cent voted for U  Nyunt Win of NLD in the Election. Out of 74,920 voters, the number of voters who presented signed  petitions of no confidence in U Nyunt Win totalled 54,398 or 72.61 per cent.

At the rally in Myanaung Township Constituency-1, entrepreneur U Win Maw presented declarations  expressing no confidence in U Tin Oo of Myanaung Township Constituency-1 of NLD and no support  for him signed by 56,958 voters of 209 wards and villages to Joint-Secretary of Township Multiparty  Democracy General Election

Sub-commission Deputy Head of Township General Administration Department U Hla Soe. Out of  67,888 eligible voters in Myanaung Township Constituency-1, 28,248 or 41.61 per cent voted for U Tin  Oo of NLD in the Election. Out of 83,453 voters, the number of voters who presented signed petitions of  no confidence in U Tin Oo totalled 56,958 or 68.25 per cent. At the rally in Mawlamyinegyun Township  Constituency-2, farmer U Ye Tin presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Tin Hla of
Mawlamyinegyun Township Constituency-2 of NLD and no support for him signed by S6,011 voters of  314 wards and villages to Joint Secretary of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub- commission Deputy Head of Township General Administration Department U Myo Zin. Out of 70,457  eligible voters in Mawlamyinegyun Township Constituency-2, 20,317 or 28.84 per cent voted for U Tin Hla. Out of 84,0(16 voters, the number of voters who presented signed petitions of no confidence in U Tin Hla totalled 56,011 or 66.67 per cent.

At the rally in Pantanaw Township Constituency 2, farmer U Soe Tint presented declarations expressing  no confidence in U Mehn Nyunt Thein of Pantanaw Township Constituency-2 of NLD and no support  for him signed by 63,600 voters of 220 wards and villages to Member of Township Multiparty  Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Aung Myint.

Out of 61,192 eligible voters in Pantanaw Township Constituency-2, 21,353 or 34.89 per cent voted for U  Mehn Nyunt Thein. Out of 70,930 voters, the number of voters who presented signed petitions of no  confidence in U Mehn Nyunt Thein totalled 63,600 or 89.67 per cent.

At the rally in Danubyu Township Constituency-1, farmer U Kyi Hla presented declarations expressing  no confidence in U Win Myint of Danubyu Township Constituency-1 of NLD and no support for him  signed by 46,150 voters of 130 wards and villages to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy  General Election Sub-commission Township Education Officer U San.

Out of 50,953 eligible voters in Danubyu Township Constituency-1, 20,388 or 40.01 per cent voted for U  Mehn Nyunt Thein. Out of 54,114 voters, the number of voters who presented signed petitions of no  confidence in U Win Myint-totalled 46,150 or 85.28 per cent.

A total of 525,581 voters of 1,807 wards and villages attended the rallies in eight townships of  Ayeyawady Division. The voters presented declarations expressing no confidence in representatives of  respective townships and no support for them and petitions for their resignation to respective  Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commissions.

(15)  23 Monyo NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 28 April-Twenty-three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Monyo Township, Bago Division.

Twenty-three members of Monyo Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by  sending letters of resignation to Monyo Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 8 November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in  party politics of NLD.
