(1) Secretary-1 attends dinner in honour of Friendship Invitational PhotoCompetition on Eaditional Art and Culture of ASEAN Countries and All Myanmar Golden Jubilee Photo Competition

YANGON, 26 April-Prize distribution and dinner in honour of the Friendship Invitational Photo Competition on Traditional Art and, Culture of ASEAN Countries and All Myanmar Golden Jubilee Photo Competition in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Myanmar Photographic Society was held at Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road, this evening, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Also present were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, the ministers, the chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training a Board, the deputy ministers, senior military officers, ambassadors of ASEAN countries, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental officials, Patron of Myanma Foreign Correspondents Club, veteran photographers, Chairman and EC members of MPS, members of exhibition and competition in commemoration of Golden Jubilee of MPS, prize-winning photographers of ASEAN nations, officials of social organizations and guests.

Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung delivered an address.

He said: The Secretary-l presented grand prizes to NyaungU Po Cho and Ye Tun Oo and Mr Hatono of Indonesia. Lt-Gen Tin Hla presented special prizes to Dr Maung Maung Gyi, Ye Htay Naing, Moe Hlaing, Min Min Oo, Zaw Zaw Win, Pe Myint Oo and Maung Maung Thaung. Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung presented ASEAN commemorative prizes to winners of Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei, the Philip pines, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung presented prizes to winners in monochrome competition. Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin presented prizes to winners in colour competition. Minister for Education U Than Aung presented prizes to winners in colour slides competition. Minister for Culture U Win Sein presented prizes to winners in portraits competition. Next, Chairman of MPS U Thiha Thein Nyan presented certificates of honour to judges.


(2) An annual work coordination meeting of Development Affairs Committee of the Development Affairs Department under the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Race held

YANGON, 26 April-An annual work coordination meeting of Development Affairs Committee of the Development Affairs Department under the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs was held at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street this morning, addressed by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development- Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

The Secretary-2 said that the work coordination meeting being held today is to assess the work done in 1999 by Development Affairs Committees and to lay down tasks to be carried out in Year 2000. The correct assessment of strengths and weakness are to be made, and efforts are to be exerted to ensure further improvement. So, it is an important meeting.

In conclusion, the Secretary-2 called on all to carry out the tasks for development of towns and villages with goodwill and more energetically.

Then, Minister Col Thein Nyunt elaborated on the objectives of the development affairs committees and the nurturing of employees of the development affairs committees. He spoke of collecting taxes, and urged all to carry out development tasks not only in cities but also in rural areas. He stated that as regards launching the road and bridge year and the water supply year last year, with the use of K 2.088 billion by 55% of the income, the Development Affairs Department built 101.5 mile-long tarred road, 408.37 mile-long stone road, 136.75 mile-long gravel road and 221.125-mile-long earth road totalling 867.5 miles in rural areas and 201.625-mile-long tarred road, 35.5-mile-long granite road, 18.5-mile-long gravel road and 38.375-mile long earth road totalling 294 miles in towns. Therefore, roads in towns and rural areas stretching 1,161.5 miles in all, have been built.

He added that in 1999-2000, water supply projects have been implemented in ten towns in Kachin State, Sagaing Division, Rakhine State, Yangon Division and Shan State (North). Up to this year, water supply projects have been implemented in 160 towns.

In conclusion, the minister urged all to pay first priority to construction of roads and bridges. Then, the Secretary-2 and party inspected rubbish-grinding machines manufactured by development affairs committees and gave instructions to the officials. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the minister.


(3) Wellwishers make donations to community welfare tasks of Thanmyanthu Enterprise

YANGON, 26 April- Wellwishers made donations to community welfare tasks of Thanmyanthu Enterprise at the City Hall this afternoon. Present on the occasion were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Tatmadaw officers and departmental officials. Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo accepted the donations and thanked the donors. Director of Resettlement Col Aung Thein explained matters community welfare tasks being carried out by Thanmyanthu Enterprise. Thanmyanthu Enterprise and wellwishers also made cash donations for Mary Chapman School for the Deaf, Insein Khawegyan School for the Blind, Kyimyinedine School for the Blind, and Schools for the Disabled on Kyaikwaing Pagoda Road.


(4) Development of Buthidaung, Maungtaw and An Townships coordinated

YANGON, 26 April-A coordination meeting on development of Buthidaung, Maungtaw and An Townships was held at the Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs this morning, with an address by Secretary 2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo The Secretary-2 said that rural areas of Buthidaung, Maungtaw and An Townships, in Rakhine State are endowed with land resources and marine resources, but they lagged behind in development for various reasons. Then, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt and officials reported on the tasks being undertaken in Rakhine State. The Secretary-2 attended to their requirements, and the meeting came to a close.


(5) Donations presented to Myanmar Disabled Sports Federation

YANGON, 26 April- Myanmar disabled sports team will participate in the first ASEAN Disabled Invitational Sports Tournament to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 12 May.

A ceremony to present donations to Myanmar Disabled Sports Federation was held at the City Hall of Yangon City Development Committee this afternoon. It was attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, the ministers, senior military officers. The Secretary-2, Deputy Adjutant-General Col Ye Tun and Director of Resettlement Chairman of Myanmar Disabled Sports Federation Col Aung Thein accepted the donations.


(6) Committee for Extended Breeding and Production of Prawn meets

YANGON, 26 April-Committee for Extended Breeding and Production of Prawn held its 1/2000 meeting at Fisheries Department this evening, with an address by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

The Secretary-2 said the entrepreneurs visited breeding farms and places for the breeding of sea prawn in Yangon and Ayeyawady Division and Rakhine State and they proposed the places and acres for the breeding of sea prawn. He spoke of the need for the entrepreneurs to implement the tasks at the designated places as much as possible.

Next, Chairman of Committee for Extended Breeding and Production of Prawn Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe reported on arrangements for the successful breeding of sea prawn in cooperation with ministry of Livestock and Fisheries and region in charges. The secretary-2 then gave supplementary instructions.


(7) Minister receives Vietnam and Japanese visitors

YANGON, 26 April-Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein received Ambassador of Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the Union of Myanmar Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa, and General Manager of Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan Mr Tsuneo Akabane and party at his office at 9 am and 10 am today respectively. Also present at the calls were Chairman of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung and Director-General of Internal Revenue Department U Chit Swe.


(8) Minister for Hotels and Tourism receives Italian visitor

YANGON, 26 Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin received Owner and General Manager of Mosaico Company Mr Tura Pietro at his office at afternoon today. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu and officials..


(9) Mandalay Mayor leaves for PRC

YANGON, 26 April-At the invitation of the Mayor of Kunming, Chairman of Mandalay City Development Committee Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein and Staff Officer U Hla Koe left for Kunming, People's Republic of China by air this afternoon to attend the International Tourism Meeting which is being held from 10 April to 12 May.


(10) Myanmar Buddhist delegation leaves for Nepal

YANGON, 26 April- Myanmar Buddhist delegation led by Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, left far Nepal via Bangkok by air at 8 am today to hold merits sharing ceremony for newly built hostel and stake driving ceremony of a Dhammayon.


(11) Minister for Commerce meets guests from Singapore

YANGON, 26 April-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met Managing Director Mr D D Gupta of Sineximco Pte Ltd, Singapore, and party at his office on Strand Road at noon today. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Gen Kyaw San and officials.


(12) Work Committee for Hosting AEM Retreat meets

YANGON, 26 April-The third meeting of the Work Committee for Hosting ASEAN Economic Ministers Retreat was held at the Traders Hotel this morning in order to successfully host the AEM Retreat here on 1 May and the first meeting on cooperation of East Asia of economic ministers of ASEAN member nations, the People's Republic of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea on 2 May.

Chairman of the Central Committee for Hosting AEM Retreat Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel made a speech on the occasion. Afterward, members of the work committee and officials of respective subcommittees participated in discussions. The minister gave concluding remarks, saying the forth- coming meeting will be preliminary meetings for the ASEAN summit meeting to be held later, and so officials are to make efforts for successful hosting of the meeting.


(13) Innwa Bank Ltd opens Phakant branch

YANGON, 26 April-A ceremony to open seventh branch of Innwa Bank Ltd was held in Phakant this morning Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win and Col Soe Myint formally opened the branch. A ceremony to mark the opening of Phakant Branch was held at the meeting hall of Phakant Township Peace and Development Council. Then, Col Zaw Lin and Deputy Director U Pe Than spoke words of thanks. The branch provided banking services from today.


(14) Donation ceremony for buying mammography machine held in Bangkok

YANGON, 25 April-A ceremony to donate cash for buying mammography machine to be used at the clinic for women, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association was held at the residence of Myanmar Ambassador to Thailand in Bangkok on 24 April. First Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe extended greetings. Then the donations of Embassy family headed by Ambassador U Hla Maung and Embassy facilities .

Accepted by Chairperson Professor Dr Daw Kyu Kyu Swe of MMCWA and Vice-Chair person Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe who thanked and presented certificates of honour on the well-wishers.


(15) 5.2661 kgs of raw opium seized in Kyimyindine

YANGON, 26 April-A combined team comprising local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, while waiting on Strand Road, near the Hsinmalaik Bus Terminal, Kyimyindine Township, Yangon Division, arrested Ma Aye Aye Mar (a) Ma Mu Nu Yi, daughter of U Myint Swe, Htitali Village, Pinlaung Township and Win Naing, son of U Than Nyunt, Yomingyi 1 st Street, Ward 4, Dagon Myothit (East), together with 5.2661 kgs of raw opium. Action is being taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(16)People of Ngazun Township submit petitions expressing no support for and dissolving NLD

YANGON, 26 April-The people from Nos 1 and 2 Constituencies of Ngazun Township, Mandalay Division, expressed no support for National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolving NLD at rallies held in Motaung, Ngamaya,

Thakyin, Yezin, Anaukhtaw, Gyo, Chinthaylet, Thunatsit, Yunkan and Minnaygon village-tracts on 28 March. A total of 2,516 people from eight villages attended the rally in Motaung Villagetract.

On behalf of attendance's, farmer U Kyaw of Motaung Ywama Village expressed no support for NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. U Soe Naing of LekyinOo Village and U Tin Nyunt of Thayetpincho Village, on behalf of attendance's, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Staff Officer of Immigration and National Registration Department U Swe Nyein. The ceremony ended with the chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes".

Altogether 3,754 people from 12 villages attended the rally in Ngamya Villagetract. On behalf of attendance's, U Win Myint of Ngamya Village expressed no support for NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Three representatives, on behalf of people from the village-tract, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Township Judge Daw Khin Ohn Tint.

Similarly, 1,820 people from six village-tracts attended the rally in Thakyin Village-tract. On behalf of people, farmer U Thein Mar of Thakyin Village expressed no support for NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Two representatives, on behalf of attendance's, presented petitions signed by the people to Secretary of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Township Account Officer Daw San Yi. The ceremony ended with the chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". Likewise, 1,573 people from four village-tracts attended the rally in Yezin Village-tract. support for NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Three representatives, on behalf of people from three villages, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Township Medical Officer | Daw San San Tint. The ceremony ended with chanting of l the slogan "Our Three Main l National Causes". Likewise, 2,356 people from four village-tracts attended the rally in Yunkan Village-tract.

On behalf of attendance's, Junior Assistant Teacher U San Htay of Wayonchaung Village expressed no support for NLD and petitioned for dissolving it Four representatives, on behalf of attendance's, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Kyi San. The ceremony ended with chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". A total of 1,350 people from six village-tracts attended the rally in Minnaydon Village-tract On behalf of attendance's, farmer U Htaw Hla of Minnaygon Village expressed no support for NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. Seven representatives, on behalf of attendance's, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Township Education Officer U Tint Swe. The ceremony ended with chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes". There are 77,361 voters in Ngazun Township. The people who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving NLD are 68,421 people or 88.44 per cent.


(17) 43 Mingin NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 26 April-Forty-three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Mingin Township, Sagaing Division. Forty-three members of Mingin Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mingin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 14 September 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
