(1) China, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand sign Agreement on Commercial Navigation on Lancang- Mekong River

YANGON, 20 April -The People's Republic of China, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myanmar and Thailand signed the Agreement on Commercial Navigation on Lancang-Mekong River at the Golden Triangle Hotel in Tachilek, Shan State (East), this morning.

Present on the occasion were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council Commander of Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein, Chinese delegation led by Minister of Communications of PRC Mr Huang Zhendong, Laotian delegation led by Minister of Communication, Transport, Post and Construction of LPDR Mr Phao Bounnaphonh, Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe Thai delegation led by Minister of Transport and Communications of Thailand Mr Suthep Thuagsuban. Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein delivered a welcoming statement and Minister of Communications of PRC Mr Huang Zhendong then gave a speech. Minister of Communication , Transport, Post and Construction of LPDR Mr Phao Bounnaphonh made a speed. Minister for Transport Maj- Gen Hla Myint Swe delivered an address.  Minister of Transport and Communications of Thailand Mr Suthep Thuagsuban gave a speech and Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than made speech.

Also present were senior officials of China, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand and others. The meeting
discussed and adopted the Terms of Reference (TOR) for the Commercial Navigation Rules and Safety Regulations. The meeting concluded in the afternoon.

Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe hosted dinner in honour of Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein, the PRC delegation led by Minister Mr Huang Zhendong, LPDR delegation led by Minister Mr Phao
Bounnaphonh, members of Myanmar delegation and members of Thai delegation at Golden Triangle
Hotel. Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe presented gifts to Mr Huang Zhendong and Mr Phao Bounnaphonh.
After the dinner, the guests were entertained to traditional dances. Maj-Gen Thein Sein, Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Mr Phao Bounnaphonh and Mr Huang Zhendong presented flower baskets to members of the dance troupes.

In the afternoon, members of the Chinese delegation visited the farming industry of Honpang Company of Shan State (North) Special Region 2 in Tachilek Township.


(2) Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation receives Japanese visitors

YANGON, 20 April- Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin received Director-
General of Policy Research Council Liberal Democratic Party of Japan Mr Tomomitsu Iwakura and
Director Mr Akira Karasawa of Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock of Japan at his office at 4 pm today. They discussed matters related to economic and technical cooperation in the agriculture sector between Myanmar and Japan.


(3) Minister for Finance and Revenue receives German and Japanese visitors

YANGON, 20 April- Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein received Chairman of
Mayer's Mint Co of Germany Mr Bernhard H Mayer and Director of International Financial Markets Office of Ministry of Finance of Japan Mr Kishimoto Shuhei and party at his office at 2 pm and 3 pm today respectively. They cordially discussed matters on bilateral cooperation.

(4) Minister meets guests from Japan

YANGON, 20 April-Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman Office Brig-Gen Abel met Chairmen of Business Associations of Japan led by Mr Kojikurata at his office at 10 am yesterday. Also present at the call were officials of National AFTA Unit.


(5) Minister for Information meets Ambassador of Singapore

YANGON, 20 April-Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung met Ambassador of Singapore to the Union of Myanmar Mr Simon Tensing De Cruz at the guest room of Myanma Radio and Television, Pyay Road, at 2 pm today. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein and officials.


(6) Mayor U Ko Lay receives PRC delegation

YANGON, 20 April- Yangon Mayor U Ko Lay received an eight-member Chinese delegation led by Vice Chairman Mr Hu Xu Jian of Jiansu Province People's Government (JPPG), currently here at the invitation of Yangon Mayor, at his office at 10 am today. Also present were Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice  Mayor Col Maung Pa, department heads and officials of PRC Embassy.

(7) Minister inspects Tachilek Airport

YANGON, 20 April - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe inspected Tachilek Airport
yesterday morning. Senior Engineer of the Department of Civil Aviation U Kyaw Soe reported on
conditions of the runway undergoing repairs, and the minister gave instructions on construction works. Then, the minister inspected the lounge and shops at the airport, and gave instructions to the officials.

Afterwards, the minister, together with Deputy Minister U Pe Than and officials, went to Mongphone at Golden Triangle Region in Tachilek Township, and inspected conditions of building a stone wall to prevent erosion of Mehoak Creek bank.

The minister gave instructions on durability of the stone wall. Later, minister and officials inspected the construction of the road to the jetty at Wanpon on the side of Myanmar and regional development tasks, and give instruction on prevention of erosion of Mekong River bank.


(8) Minister inspects construction of Yebawthaung Bridge

YANGON, 20 April -Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, together with Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Myint Thein and officials of Public Works, inspected construction of Yebawthaung Bridge at Bawlekyun Bridges Project in Hmawby Township yesterday evening.

Project Superintending Engineer U San Nyein reported on progress of work and tasks to be carried out. The minister inspected construction works and gave instructions on work site safety, systematic
storage of construction materials and construction of the bridge to meet with the set standard.
Yebawthaung Bridge, 1,940 feet long, is being built in Hmawby Township. It is of reinforced concrete type and has a 24-foot-wide motor way- and two five-foot wide pedestrian lanes. It can bear 60-ton loads.


(9) Tipitakadhara, Tipitaka Kovida Sayadaws to be honoured on 20 May

YANGON, 20 April- A meeting on holding the 52nd ceremony to honour Tipitakadhara and Tipitaka Kovida title recipient Sayadaws took place at the office of the Minister for Religious Affairs this afternoon.

Present on the occasion were Patron for the Committee for Holding the 52nd Ceremony to Honour
Tipitakadhara and Tipitaka Kovida title recipient Sayadaws, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, and officials. Speaking on the occasion, Minister U Aung Khin said two Tipitakadhara and Tipitaka Kovida title recipient Sayadaws and one Tipitakadhara title recipient Sayadaw had emerged significantly in the 52nd ceremony, and the Sayadaws would be honoured on 20 May more splendidly than the previous ceremony. Chairmen and officials of subcommittees concerned took part in discussions and gave suggestions.

(10) Cooperative delegation leaves for ROK

YANGON, 20 April-A two-member delegation led by Vice-Chairman of Agricultural Producers
Cooperative Syndicate Limited, Ministry of Cooperatives and Vice-Chairman of Cooperative Bank
Limited U Khin Maung Aye yesterday left for Republic of Korea to attend Agricultural Credit and
Cooperatives Management Course which will be held from 20 April to 3 May.


(11) Pilot study made in search of route to scale snow-capped Eimawbon Mountain

YANGON, 20 April-The 13-member mountaineering team led by Secretary of Myanmar Hiking and Mountaineering Federation U Myo Thant made a pilot study in search of a route to scale the 13351-foot Eimawbon snow-capped mountain in Hsawlaw Township, Myitkyina District, on the border of China and Myanmar.

They made necessary surveys covering 170 miles and scaled up to 12,400 feet on 6 April afternoon.
Likewise, a 38-member mountaineering team led by President of MHMF Dr Paing Soe left here by train yesterday evening to scale the 6020- foot Hsintaung Mountain in Thazi Township and the 5682foot Myinmahti Mountain in Kalaw Township.


(12) Myawady Bank Limited opens Taunggyi Branch

YANGON, 20 April - Myawady Bank Limited opened its branch in Taunggyi, Shan State ( South),
yesterday morning. Soon' was offered to ten Sayadaws at 5 am. The Sayadaws recited parittas. U Soe Tint and Brig-Gen Win Hlaing formally opened the branch. Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo unveiled the signboard of the branch. Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo, Brig-Gen Win Hlaing and U Soe Tint gave speeches. This is the fourth branch of Myawady Bank Limited, which was founded on 4 April 1993.

(13) Donations for Hninzigon Home for the Aged

YANGON, 20 April - Well-wishers donated cash to Hninzigon Home for the Aged in Bahan Township on Myanmar New Year Day. The donations included K 220,000 by U Aye Maung Than and wife Professor Daw Khin Saw Hla and family of No 13 (C), Kanbawza Street, Bahan Township, K 100,000 by Daw Aye Aye Soe, U Ohn Than, Daw Hla Hla Soe and family of No 932., Lower Mingaladon Street, Sintngu Ward, Insein Township and K 100,000 by Maung Myint Oo and family of No 5, Aungteza Street, Byaingye Ohzin Ward, Tamway Township. Chairman of the Supervisory Committee for Hninzigon Home for the Aged U Maung Tin, Secretary U Aung Than, officials.


(14) Myanmar international master leaves for Indonesia

YANGON, 20 April-International master Zaw Win of Myanmar Chess Federation together with manager U Maung Maung Lwin, international referee, left for Jakarta,. Indonesia, by air this morning. Zaw Win will participate in Jaffa Classic Super Grand Master Tournament which will be held from 21 to 30 April and Jaffa. International Open Chess Tournament from 1 to 12 May sponsored by FIDE at Bali Island.


(15) Diagnostic medico surgical procedure course to be opened

YANGON, 20 April-One and half month course on Diagnostic medico surgical procedures sponsored by Continuous Medical Education Unit of Myanmar Medical Association will be opened beginning April 29 from noon to 4 pm at week ends. Those wishing to attend the course may enlist at the Myanmar Medical Association starting from 24 April during office hours.

(16) 12 Kalewa NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 20 April-Twelve members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Kalewa Township, Sagaing Division. Twelve members of Kalewa Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kalewa Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 11 February 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in Party politics of NLD.
