(1) Senior General Than Shwe concludes 14-day inspection tour of Mandalay and Sagaing Divisions  and Rakhine State

YANGON, 18 April - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of  Defense Services Senior General Than Shwe toured Mandalay Division, Sagaing Division and Rakhine  State from 5 to 18 April.

During his inspection tour covering two divisions, one state and 12 townships, the Senior General gave  guidance on regional development undertakings.

Inauguration of the Yangon-Sittway Highway has also contributed much to the progress of road
transport in the Rakhine State which in the past had to rely only on air and water transport. Senior
General Than Shwe looked into the requirements in building Yangon-Kyaukphyu Highway and bridges on it.

After completion of the 14-day inspection tour, the Senior General and party arrived back here by air from Thandwe this afternoon.

Yesterday evening, the Senior General attended ceremony to release hot-air balloons and traditional
dance show at Ngapali Beach Thandwe Township. Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development  Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo. who accompanied the Senior General, met with officials at Thandwe.

Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi explained efforts being made to extend oil and natural gas
production and distribution of fuel to the regional fishing industry.

Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin presented a report on extended cultivation's  of paddy, groundnut ,mustard, onion, oil palm, rubber and other crops and plans to render assistance in  building two sluice gates in Thandwe Township. Together with the commander and minister, the Secretary 2 inspected sea prawn farming of Ever Live Co Ltd in Thandwe Township. Officials of the  company explained points of the far.

Minister Brig- Gen Lun Thi inspected the fuel storage and shop in Thabyugyaing in the township.
 


(2) Secretary-l receives Ambassador of Australia

YANGON, 18 April-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt  received Ambassador of Australia to the Union of Myanmar Ms Lyndall Alexandra McLean who has  completed tour of duties in Myanmar at the Guest House of Ministry of Defence at 8.30 am today

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director
General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.


(3) Daw Kyaing Kyaing attends Htidaw hoisting ceremony of Lawka Zeya Pagoda in Monyo Township

YANGON, 18 April- Htidaw hoisting and consecrating ceremonies of Lawka Zeya Pagoda were held at  Mingala Mandat in Mingyi Village, Yegin, in Monyo Township, Thayawady District, Bago Division,  this morning, attended by Daw Kyaing Kyaing, wife of Chairman of the State Peace and Development  Council Senior General Than Shwe.

Next, Daw Kyaing Kyaing and family presented Seinbudaw, Hngetmyatnadaw and offertories to
members of the Sangha; Daw Mya Mya San, Daw Kyi Kyi Ohn, Minister U Aung Khin and officials, provisions and offertories; Daw Kyaing Kyaing and family conveyed Seinbudaw; Daw Mya Mya San, Hngetmyatnadaw;  Daw Kyi Kyi Ohn, Minister U Aung Khin and officials, tiers of the Htidaw to decorated carriage.

Afterwards, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe and wife  Daw Kyaing Kyaing family donated K 50,000 for renovation of the pagoda, Daw Mya Mya San K 50,000  for Dagundaing to the commander. Daw Kyaing Kyaing family and Daw Mya Mya San and Party visited  Minyaungpat Pagoda.


(4) Minister arrives back after attending South summit 13th NAM Ministerial Conference

YANGON, 18 April-The Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung arrived  back here by air this afternoon from Cuba after attending the South Summit of the Group of 77 held in  Havana, Cuba, from 10 to 14 April. Prior to the Summit, the Minister also attended the 13th Ministerial  Conference of Non-Aligned Movement in Cartagena, Colombia, from 7 to 9 April.

On the last day of the Summit, Minister U Win Aung held a Press Conference at the Havana
International Press Center to brief the Press on the overview of developments taking place in Myanmar.  Present on the occasion were the representatives from international Press including CNN, Time magazine, AP,ABC, VOA,Los Angeles Times,APTN (Associate Press Television Network ) and the  Boston Globe.


(5) Minister meets Chinese visitors

YANGON, 18 April-Minister for industry-1 U Aung Thaung met Chairman Mr Pen Hongbin of China National Construction and Agricultural Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CAMC) and Managing Director Ms Luo Yan of Yangon office and party at his office this morning.

Similarly, the minister met Assistant President Mr Xu Xiang Chun of China Metallurgical Construction (Group) Corporation and party at his office this afternoon.


(6) Myanmar to host 20th ASEAN police directors-general meeting in May

YANGON, 18 April- A meeting on hosting the 20th ASEAN police directors general meeting here was  held at the Ministry of Home Affairs this afternoon.

Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing spoke on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, Minister  Col Tin Hlaing said the 20th ASEAN police directors-general meeting will be held in May and called on  departments concerned to work in co-operation for hosting of the meeting.


(7) ASEAN Economic Ministers' (AEM) Retreat to be held in Yangon on 1 May

YANGON, 18 April-The second meeting on holding ASEAN Economic Ministers' (AEM) Retreat and  the First East Asia Co-operation Meeting of ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) and Ministers of  People's Republic of China, Japan and Republic of Korea took place at the office of the Ministry of  National Planning and Economic Development this morning.

Informal Meeting of ASEAN Economic Minister will be held on 1 May and the meeting of ASEAN
Economic Ministers and their counterparts of China, Republic of Korea and Japan on 2 May. The
Deputy Minister spoke on the occasion.

The director-general of National AFTA Unit explained programmes of the meeting and arrangements of  the work committee for them. The deputy minister gave necessary instructions on the arrangements.


(8) 12th ASEAN Red Cross and Red Crescent Task Force Meeting begins

YANGON, 18 April-The 12th ASEAN Red Cross and Red Crescent Aids Task Force Meeting took place  at the Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel this morning under the co-operation programme between Myanmar  Red Cross Society and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

President of MRCS Dr Kyaw Win made a speech on the occasion. Dr Stefan Seebacher, health
representative of IFRCRCS for South East Asia Mr Yutaka Oiwa, resident representative of IFRC, Mr  Edgar B Nejia, secretary of ARTS, spoke on the occasion. Eighteen representatives of 13 nations are  participating in the meeting which ends on 21 April.


(9) Mayor meets Ambassadors of Laos and UK

YANGON, 18 April- Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay met Dean of  Diplomatic Corps Ambassador of Lao People's Democratic Republic to Myanmar Mr Ly Bounkham at  his office at 9.30 am today. Similarly, the Mayor met Ambassador of United Kingdom Mr John Jenkins  (LVO) at his office at 11 am. Also present at the calls were Vice-Chairman of YCDC Vice-Mayor Col  Maung Pa, Secretary Col Myint Aung of YCDC, Joint- Secretary U Kyi Win and members of YCDC,  Heads of Departments and officials.


(10) Second round of Mayor's Trophy Under 18 Soccer Tournament opens

YANGON, 18 April- A ceremony to open the second round of the First Yangon Mayor's Trophy Under-18 Inter-Township Soccer Tournament was held at Padomma Sports Ground in Sangyoung Township  this afternoon, attended by Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay. Mayor U Ko Lay declared the tournament open. In the  first-day matches, Twantay played against Mingaladon and Kyauktada against Yankin. On 19 April,  North Okkalapa meets Mayangon and Shwepyith meets Dalla.


(11) Commander Inspects development tasks in Mandalay Division

YANGON, 18 April- Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of  Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, accompanied by Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein and  departmental officials, inspected growing of perennial tree plantations, vegetable plantations and shady  trees and flower in the compound of Fine Arts Department (Mandalay Branch) on 17 April morning.

The Commander also inspected progress in renovation of the National Theatre and fulfilled the
requirements. Then, the Commander and party proceeded to Myanmar Medical Association Mandalay.


(12) Mayor inspects nursery plantation and tax-free vegetables, meat and fish market

YANGON, 18 April- Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay accompanied  by members of YCDC U Aung Soe and Col Thaung Wai and responsible officials inspected nursery  plantation and Hanthawady tax-free market of vegetables, meat and fish producers opened in Kamayut  Township at 8 am today. The Mayor and party inspected nursery plantation of Parks and Playgrounds  Department and gave necessary instructions.


(13) Minister for Immigration and Population meets service personnel

YANGON 18 April-Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun met service personnel at the  meeting hall of Population Department on Maha Bandoola Street this morning.

He spoke of the need for them to be loyal to the State, to avoid irregularities and corruption and to
compile correct data on population and growth rate after making field trips to grassroots levels.


(14) Minister inspects restoration of ancient pagodas in MraukU

YANGON, 18 April- Minister for Culture U Win Sein, accompanied by officials, inspected restoration of  ancient pagodas in MraukU, Rakhine State, on 16 April.

The minister inspected restoration works at Pisitaung Pagoda in MraukU, Koethaung Pagoda built by  Rakine King Minteikkha in 1553, which is the biggest in MraukU cultural region, Thakyamanaung  Pagoda built by King Thiri Thudhamma Raza in the 16thcentury AD. The minister paid age to Maha Muni Yokeshintawmyatgi Buddha Image in Kyauktaw Township which was donated by King of Danya- wady Sanda Thuriya in 6th Century BC. The minister also oversaw excavation of ancient MraukU Palace  and MraukU Archaeological Museum.


(15) Leading Committee for Myanmar Medical Materials and Technological Development holds fourth meeting

YANGON, 18 April-The fourth co-ordination meeting of Leading Committee for Myanmar Medical Raw  Materials and Technological Development was held at the Ministry of Industry-l this morning, with an  address by Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung..

Minister U Aung Thaung said the meeting was held to make arrangements for local production of raw  materials for medicines under the guidance of the Head of State. The meeting ended with the concluding  remarks by the minister.


(16) Photo Exhibition of Myanmar Photographic Society on 22-26 April

YANGON, 18 April-The All Myanmar Photographic Competition and the Photo Competition on Art,  Culture and Custom of ASEAN member nations will be displayed at the Photographic Exhibition in  Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wisara Road from 22 to 26 April in commemoration of the Golden Jubilee of Myanmar Photographic Society.

At the exhibition, sale rooms for photographic equipment, umbrella and cosmetics and books will be
opened. Any person may visit the exhibition from 8 am to 5 pm daily till 26 April free of charge.


(17) Hsindewa Publishing House and Myanmar Art Show

YANGON, 18 April-Hsindewa Publishing House and Myanmar Art Show which continued at No 159,  38th Street, Kyauktada Township was crowded with visitors today. The show continues till 21 April.


(18) Harvest of model summer paddy plantations in Pathein

YANGON, 18 April-The summer paddy harvesting ceremony was held at the model paddy plantation in  Pyinkadoegon Village-tract, Pathein Township,on 17 April morning.

The model plot was put under Kyawzeya and Hnanka paddy strains in summer paddy cultivation
season. The strains of summer paddy Manawthukha, Sima, Thee-htetyin and Hmawbyhsan were
cultivated on the plot.  After the harvesting ceremony, summer paddy of the model plot yielded an
average 122.28 baskets per acre.


(19) Pengwegon BEHS students pay respects to teachers

YANGON, 18 April-The 18th respect paying ceremony to the teachers of Pengwegon BEHS, Kyauktaga  Township, Bago division was held at the school at 1 pm on 16 April. . Over 300 old students of  Pengwegon BEHS paid respects and donated offertories worth K 250,000 to 45 teachers.


(20) 40 Okpo NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 18 April-Forty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Okpo
Township, Bago Division.

Forty members of Okpo Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters  of resignation to Okpo Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party  concerned on 9 February 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
