(1) Efforts made to enable posterity to live above poverty line and not to feel small Senior General Than Shwe graces inauguration of railroad section , Mu River Bridge

YANGON, 9 April- Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe attended the inauguration ceremony of Budalin-YeU-KhinU  railroad section and Mu River Bridge in Sagaing Division built by Myanma Railways of the Ministry of  Rail Transportation at the pandal near Mu River Bridge at 9.20 am today, and extended greetings to local
people.

The Senior General together with Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin  Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander- in Then, the Senior General and party attended the inauguration ceremony of Budalin- YeU-KhinU  railroad section and Mu River Bridge. and officials. U Hla Win of Myanmar Radio and Television acted
as master of ceremonies.

Chairman of Central Committee for Ensuring Smooth and Secure Transport Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo  said that he is much pleased to see a new railroad and Mu River Bridge grandly, and he believed that  local people will also feel the same.

Mu River Bridge inaugurated today is of concrete type, and situated on Budalin-YeU-KhinU rail- road,  and not only trains but also cars can use the bridge.

Old Budalin-YeU railroad was extended to such an extent that it now reaches KhinU and is connected  with Mandalay-Myitkyina railroad.

From 1988 to date, railroads are being built to ensure smooth transport, and new railroads including  Budalin-YeU-KhinU railroad, about 1,000 miles long in all, have been built.

In the north-west region of the Union covering Sagaing Division, ChaungU Pakokku-Gangaw-Kalay  railroad and Hsinbyushin Bridge across the Chindwin River have been constructed. Similarly,  Shwenyaung-Yaksauk railroad, Shwenyaung Namhsan railroad and Aungban-Loikaw railroad have been  built in the eastern part of the Union covering Shan State and Kayah State, Ye-Dawei railroad in the
southern part of the Union covering Mon State and Taninthayi Division, and Pyay-Aunglan-Taungdwingyi railroad, Magway-Taungdwingyi railroad and TadaU-Myingyan-Bagan-NyaungU railroad in the central part of the Union.

The already built railroads and motor roads are contributing greatly towards development of the State,  regional development and further cementing of friendly ties of national races.

The effective endeavors for stability of the State, community peace and tranquillity, rule of law and  national reconsolidation basically necessitates smooth and speedy transport from one region to another  and among states and divisions in the Union. Only when transport infrastructure is strong, can efforts  be made with momentum for emergence of a modern and developed nation.

If regions are difficult of access, national races will have only a few occasions to deal with one another,  national solidarity will suffer, and exchange of knowledge and regional products will be difficult. In  accord with the guidance of Senior General Than Shwe, the State Peace and Development Council is  making all- out effort to be able to hand over good political, economic and social legacy to posterity of  Myanmar with a view to enabling them to live and make a living conveniently. In doing so, the
Government is working day and day out with genuine goodwill for the benefit of the State and the  people.

Tasks to build the nation into a modern and developed one are numerous, highly complex and  demanding. The laying down of a foundation calls for much sweat and blood of the State and the  people.

It is high time for all to do work practically and unitedly, not to love the nation with the use of the mouth  or to build a castle in the air. Under these circumstances, it is imperative that concerted efforts are to be  made to strengthen the nation.

The co-operation of the Government, the people and the Tatmadaw leads to successful completion of  construction projects all over the nation, and in this way, the tasks benefiting the nation are to be  carried out.

In conclusion, the Secretary-2 thanked engineers and employees of Myanma Railways who built the  railroad and local people who co-operated in constructing the railroad.

Then, Senior General Than Shwe extended greetings. He said today is an auspicious day as Butalin-YeU  KhinU railroad can be inaugurated. Although covered by the central part of the nation, this region was  difficult of access. There was an old railroad, but it was damaged during World War II, and has not been  repaired for over 50 years. Now,-this railroad can be used and Mu River Bridge has been constructed, so
the region will become easy of access gradually and achieve development.

The Government has a desire for the development of all the regions of the Union, so railroads and motor  roads, the basic requirement for the development of the State and regional development, are being built  and extended.

As it is a dry region, local people have difficulty to earn their living. To enable them to escape from that  poverty, water resources are being tapped in the region, dams and embankments built, river water  pumping projects implemented.

Thaphanseik Dam, the biggest in the region, has been built at a cost of large sum of money.

Arrangements are being made to transform labor forces from rural areas into industrial labor forces.

These efforts are being made to enable posterity to live above the poverty line and not to feel small and  to ensure bright prospects of the nation.

Public participation is of great importance in striving for the development of the State and regional  development.

The Government will take the lead, and the people are to carry out the tasks practically. Only when  collaborative efforts are made, will the State be able to make progress.

In conclusion, the Senior General urged all to remove destructive elements opposing and hindering the  development of the and; well being of the people by differentiating between constructive acts and  destructive acts and good and bad.' On behalf of regional people, Secretary of Shwebo District Union  Solidarity and Development Association U Tin Myint spoke words of banks. Senior General Than Shwe
presented gift to Project Engineer Assistant General Manager (Civil) U Maung Hone on behalf of  service personnel of Myanma Railways. Minister U Pan Aung presented a commemorative gift to Senior  General Than Shwe. Senior-General Than Shwe and party inspected the railroad and the bridge and  greeted those present.

Afterwards, vehicles passed the bridge A twin-engine train and a special train also passed the bridge.  Senior General Than Shwe and party took the special train to a station.

Budalin-YeU-KhinU railroad is 51.38 miles long and there are 241 bridges on the railroad. Among them  Mu River Bridge, 2,125 feet long and 14 feet wide, is the longest and it has three feet wide walkways on  each side. Both vehicle and train can run on the bridge. The railroad and bridge were constructed at a  cost of over 1 billion Kyat Trains will run till 20 April for local people free of charge.
