(1) Industrialists urged to strive for quantitative and qualitative improvement of import of import substitute products, Senior General Than Shwe inspects Mandalay Industrial Zone

YANGON, 6 April- Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe left here for Mandalay by. Tatmadaw Aircraft yesterday morning.

The Senior General and party were welcomed at Mandalay Airport by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Mayor of Mandalay Brig-Gen Yan Thein, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win, Deputy Chief Justice U Khin Maung Latt and officials.

The Senior General and party went to Mandalay Power tiller Factory on Kanaung Minthagyi Road in Mandalay Industrial Zone-1, and inspected the power-tillers, the welding section and 'the assembling section of the factory. Then, the Senior General and party proceeded to Mandalay Industrial Zone-2, and inspected its progress

Afterwards, the Senior General and party inspected Myat Kyaw Industry. At Kanaung Industrial Hall, the Senior General and party inspected plastic wares, stationery, electrical appliances, the production process of candles, textiles, automobile parts and tools for the lathe and pumps displayed by industrialists of Mandalay Industrial Zone and products of factories under the Ministry of Industry-1 and the Ministry of Industry-2. The Senior General heard a report on the settlement of industrialists at Mandalay Industrial Zone and progress of work by Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint.

In his guidance, the Senior General said that the Government and the. people are cooperating in establishing-industries necessary for a modern and development nation.

Today, there are 18 industrial zones including Mandalay Industrial 1- Zone, and some of them ate making considerable progress. Arrangements have been made to enable industrialists to borrow loans at low interest rates. Arrangements have been made to enable industrialists to borrow loans at low interest rates. Short-term on job training courses have been conducted at the industrial zones with a view to combining traditional methods and skills of industrialists with modern technology and know-how.

Measures are being taken to provide raw materials and machinery as much as possible. The Government has attending to requirements of investment, technological know-how and raw materials for the development of private industries, and the industrialists also need to strive to achieve not only qualitative but also quantitative improvement take innovative means order to substitute imports with locally made goods.

Efforts are to be made for the development all kinds of machinery. Throat Hospital, Mandalay University Hospital and Infectious Diseases Hospital which have been in existence before 1988, and measures taken in accord with the guidance of the Head of State such as the opening of Mandalay Academic Hospital (300-bed), Children's Hospital (300-bed), TB Hospital (200-bed), Women's Hospital (300-bed), Drug Dependency Treatment Hospital (50bed), the upgrading of hospitals. and the opening of 15 special care units at Mandalay Hospital.

The Senior General gave guidance on the systematic use of medical equipment at Hospital, the opening of on job training courses designed to improve the efficiency of doctors discharging duties at various regions and the extending of health care services down to villages. Next, the Senior General had a cordial meeting with nurse trainees.

The Senior General and party went to Technical Training School (Mandalay) of Myanma Automobile and Diesel Engine Industry under the, Ministry of Industry-2 in Aungmyay Thazan Township, and inspected the pedagogic aids and the computer

Managing Director of MADEI U Soe Thein reported on the objectives of the school, types of courses and the courses being conducted.

The Senior General gave guidance on the work. The Senior General and party inspected the courses being conducted, the smelting division and the automobile workshops the library and other, divisions.

Technical Training School (Mandalay) under the Ministry of Industry-2 is opening three-month courses on operation of machinery and repair of automobile, and will soon conduct regular two-year courses to produce skilled-technicians for small and medium enterprises in Upper Myanmar. The Senior General and party went to Traditional Medicine Hospital (50-bed) under Department of Traditional, Medicine.

The Senior General inspected the traditional medicine sale unit and the X-ray unit, and inquired after inpatients. The Senior General and party went to PyinOoLwin by helicopter at 3 pm.

(2) Secretary-1 inspect all-around renovation work of Shwedagon

YANGON,6 April- Perpetual All-round Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State

Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the southern entrance of the pagoda this afternoon. A meeting on perpetual all-round renovation of the pagoda took place at the Pyataik Tazaung on the plat form of the pagoda.

Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint reported on all-round tasks including offering Shwethingan to the pagoda, renovation works of the Naungdawgyi Pagoda, the western archway, encycling pagodas around the Shwedagon, and prayer halls, extension of the southern car park, distribution of the book on historic documents of hoisting Shwehtidaw atop the Shwedagon, publishing of the book on history of the Pagoda and the book on renovation of the pagoda from technical points of view. It was followed by supplementary reports of officials concerned.

The Secretary- 1 instructed them to systematically implement the renovation works, provide inspection to the works before the coming of major repairs, and keep on doing the works with momentum.

At the meeting, the Secretary-l handed K 1 million donated for the renovation works by wellwishers Chairman of Myanmar Universal Bank U Tin Sein and Daw Nang Kham Tit family to Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung. The Secretary-l went to the upper terrace of the pagoda where he inspected offering Shwethingan to the Pagoda and paid homage to Padamya Myetshin Buddha Image. The Secretary-l also inspected renovation works at the Naunrdawgvi Pagoda and religious buildings and paid homage to ancient Buddha images. Later, he looked into repair of the roof and archway of the western stairway and extension of the northern car park. He left there in the evening.


(3) Secretary-1 receives delegation from India

YANGON,6 April-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received the- delegation led by Professor Dr V S Ramamuthi of Indian Science and Technology Department at Dagon Yeiktha of Ministry of Defence at 9 am today.

With Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affair U Khin Maung Win, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Hlaing Win, Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of Protocol department and with the guests was Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saran.

(4) Myanmar to host AEM Retreat in May 2000 to initiate "East Asia Economic Cooperation"

YANGON 6, April-A meeting was held at the Office of the Commander-in-a(Army) is afternoon to coordinate means to host AEM Retreat in Yangon, with an address by Secretary- 1 of State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Secretary- 1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said the meeting w held for seeking ways to successfully host AEM Retreat here in May 2000 after holding the ASEAN Summits; and then regular meetings. are held. At the Summits, Heads of States of ASEAN nations make resolutions on matters relating to policy or cooperation.

Realization of the resolutions and other matters are usually coordinated at AEM Retracts. The approvals made on the decisions of the majority ate presented at formal ministerial meetings.

The significance of the Yangon AEM Retreat is that it will be the first AEM+3 meeting h the 30 years of ASEAN, which will be attended by ASEAN economic ministers and economic ministers of the three dialogue partners the People's Republic of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea. On the first day of AEM Retreat, discussions will focus on "East Asia Economic Cooperation" declared by the Third Informal Summit which was held in Manila, the Philippines, in November l999. In view of lessons acquired from economic crisis in 1997, the economic cooperation in East Asia is of great importance for East Asia nations. The embryonic stage of implementing that declaration will start in Myanmar, so it is a thing which Myanmar should take pride in.

As human resource development is important for the full incorporation of new member nations into ASEAN, Mekong basin development will be included in the topics to be discussed at the meeting. A preparatory measure taken by ASEAN to face globalization in the 21st Century is the formation of the task force of ASEAN ( Electronic ASEAN). The chairman of the task force will report its finds on the first day of the meeting.

Another task force was formed to conduct feasibility studies on boosting free trade between Australia and New Zealand and ASEAN nations to enhance the momentum of the association's trade. The chairman of the task force will also present its finds. AEM+3 meeting will be held on the second day, and nine agenda on information technology, trade and investment and e-commerce, Mekong basin development, human resources development, agriculture, industry and tourism will be discussed.

The respective committees are required to give full support to the success of the meeting since it is to initiate development of the whole ASEAN. Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel report on the venue and date to host the AEM Retreat, approval of the list of delegates, transport, reception and accommodation, information, decoration, holding of meetings, formation of the respective committees and other relevant matters. Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt gave suggestions. Present were ministers, Yangon Mayor, deputy ministers, the director-general of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department and officials.

(5) Panlaung-Six-lane Motorway Bridge opened to ease Transport Mandalay International Airport

YANGON, 6 April-Panlaung Six-lane Motorway Bridge in Sintgaing Township, Mandalay Division, was commissioned into service this morning. Chairman of the Central Committee to Ensure Secure and Smooth Transport Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen Tin Oo addressed the ceremony.

Located on the entrance road to Mandalay International Airport the reinforced concrete bridge was built at a cost of K85 million. Public Works built the bridge, 300 feet long and 88 feet wide, on Chanthagon-Sagawa section of the road.

Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary-2 said the bridge will help ease road transport to the airport as well as to the surrounding areas of TadaU Township. The existing Sagaing-Myitnge bypass, Myingyan-Natogyi-Paleik Railroad at Kyaukse-Region on Belt Road are helping to develop regional economy and the flow of commodities.

Domestic and foreign trade and communications of the nation has increased since the changing of its political, economic and social systems in 1988. In this situation, the building of road, rail, air and water transport infrastructures will contribute to progress in political economic, social and administrative fields of all regions. Panlaung Bridge serves as a firm foundation for national progress. One by one

the government is building the foundations, completing 108 bridges of 180 feet and above long and 107 dams from 1988 to date.

The government has already built Bala Minhtin, Bo Myat Tun, Nawadae and Maubin bridges . Ayeyawady River, Tarhsan, Hpa-an and Tarkaw-et bridges on Thanlwin River, Chindwin River Bridge and Hsinbyushin Bridge. Mu River Bridge built by Myanma Railways will be opened soon.

Roads and bridges are effectively helping to enhance festively of the national people of the Union, exchange of .knowledge and trade.

The completed bridges including the Panlaung were built on self-reliance basis; they are facilities Myanmars should take pride in their ability and strength.

There are many existing bridges and projected bridges; all the four corners of Myanmar can be reached conveniently and speedily; and the nation is on the right track towards rapid progress. The entire people should remove the perpetrators who are trying to block this progress as the common enemy.

Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint said construction of the bridge began on 1 April 1998. The facility cuts travel time between Mandalay and TadaU where Mandalay International Airport is situated.

Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi and Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt also gave speeches. Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo presented gifts to Superintending Engineer U Hsan Win of the bridge construction project.

Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun and U Hsan Win formally opened the bridge. After inspecting the bridge the Secretary-2 cordially greeted local people who at tended the ceremony. The Secretary-2 and party inspected Panes Creek Bridge, another facility located on the entrance road to Mandalay International, Airport. The reinforced concrete bridge will be 200 feet long.

They then inspected Dokhtawady Bridge which is also a road. It was commissioned into service on 26 January 1999; and approach road to the airport. In Mandalay the Secretary-2 chose the site to build a bridge on Ayeyawady River linking Mandalay and Sagaing.


(6) Minister meets Ambassador of Bangladesh

YANGON, 6 April-Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung met Ambassador of Bangladesh Mr Ahrned Rahim at his office at 3 pm Way. Also present on the occasion were directors-general and managing directors of department and enterprises under the ministry.

(7) Deputy Minister meets LPDR counterpart

YANGON, 6 April- Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt met Deputy Minister Mr Bouabane Volakhoune of Ministry of Culture and Information Lao People's Democratic Republic attending the 35th Meeting of ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information being' held in Myamnar, at his office at 2 pm today.


(8) Minister meets Ambassadors of Indonesia and Bangladesh

YANGON, 6 April-Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint met Ambassador of Indonesia Mr Nasaruddin M Koro at his office at 2 pm today. Similarly, Minister Brig-Gen Ohn Myint meet Ambassador of Bangladesh Mr Ahmed Rahim at his office at 4 pm today. Also present on the occasions were Deputy Minister U Myint Thein and officials.

(9) Minister inspects function Nanthida Jetty Dalla Shipyard

YANGON, 6 April- Minister for Transport Hla Myint Swe accompanied by Deputy Minister of Brig- General Kyaw Myint and officials, inspected unloading of goods from sea-going cargo lines at Jetty, Yangon Port, this morning.

The minister also inspected ferry boats running between Dalla and Yangon. The minister heard reports on functions of the shipyard and staff welfare programmes presented by officials and gave instructions on making efforts for success of the tasks of the shipyard welfare programmes for the staff and making arrangements for water supply.


(10) ASEAN-COCI Meeting enters fourth day

 YANGON, 6 April-The group-2 of the 35th Meeting of ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information continued discussions for the fourth day today at the Traders Hotel.

The meeting was co-chaired by Chairman of Information Sub-committee of 35th Meeting of ASEAN COCI Director-General of Myanma Radio and TV U Khin Maung Htay and Deputy General Secretary Mr Chakrarot Chitrabongs of National Cultural Commission Office of Thailand.

Discussions were centred on ASEAN trust fund, selection of project proposals, coordinations on ASEAN culture and information projects, assignment of duties to coordinators and implementers of ASEAN culture and information resolutions of the projects appraisal committee concerning ASEAN culture and information projects and the brief reports on ASEAN cultural programmes and ASEAN communication programmes. The meeting continues tomorrow.

(11) Delegates to ASEAN COCI Meeting visit Shwedagon Pagoda

 YANGON, 6 April- Delegates of 10 ASEAN member nations to the 35th Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on culture and Information and officials together with Chairman of National Committee on ASEAN Culture and Information Secretary of the Committee for Holding of 35th Meeting of ASEAN COCI Director-General of the Department of Cultural Institute U Myint Thein Swe, visited the Shwedagon Pagoda this morning.

Then, they proceeded to the national museum on Pyay Road, and they were welcome there by Director of the Museum Daw Nu Mya Zan of the Department of Cultural Institute and officials. Afterwards, they went to Myanma Gems Museum on Kaba Aye Pagoda, Road.


(12) Mayor meets Ambassador of Bangladesh

 YANGON, 6 April- Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay met Ambassador of Bangladesh Mr Ahmed Rahim at his office at 11 am today.

Also present on the occasion were Vice-Chairman of YCDC Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa Secretary Col Myint Aung and committee members and heads of departments.

(13) Minister inspect market trucks

 YANGON, 6 April-Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, accompanied by officials today inspect six market trucks which are selling clothes, food stuff, and personal goods, in township of Yangon Division.

The Ministry of Industry- 1 manufactures quality personal food stuff and the market trucks are now going round the city, selling over 100 items of product of the ministry at reasonable prices to the public not only in tax-free market but also in other.


(14) Members of UMFCCI leave for Napal

YANGON, 6 April- Member of the Union of the Myanmar Federation of Chamber of Commerce and Indusstry-U Tun Aung ( Tawwin Tun Co Ltd), U Saw Hlaing ( Hlagasba Furniture) and U Than Tun Aung ( Yadanabon Enterprise) left for Napal by Air at 7: 30 am today. They attended " Napal Export Promotion Meetimg and Napal Trade Fair, April 2000 " which will be held from 5 to 8 to April.


(15) 39 Letpadan NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 6 April-Thirty-nine members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Letpadan Township, Bago Division.

Thirty-nine members of Letpadan Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Letpadan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 15, December 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
