(1) Secretary-1 attends ceremony to lay cornerstone of Myanma International Centre in Mayangon Township

YANGON, 5 April-A ceremony to lay cornerstone of Myanmar International Center to be built by Yangon City Development Committee was held at Mingala Mandat on the plot at the corner of Min Dhamma Road and Tawwin Road in Mayangon Township, this morning, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-1 inspected the scale model of Myanmar International Centre.The mayor and officials reported on the project. The Secretary-1 then gave instructions. The Secretary-1 the minister the mayor and officials took the designated places.Next, the Secretary-l laid the silver casket with nine gems.

The Secretary-1 Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office U Than Shwe and Mayor U Ko Lay laid the foundations. Next, the Secretary-l laid the stone plaque of Myanmar International Centre. The Secretary-l, the ministers and the mayor sprinkled scented water on silver casket, bricks and stone plaque.

The Secretary-l and the mayor performed rituals of golden and silver showers to mark the completion of the ceremony.

The Centre, Myanmar's first multi-purpose complex of international standard, will be built on a 70-acre plot at the corner of Min Dhamma Road and Tawwin Road in Mayangon Township. It will include spacious halls for international trade fairs, meeting halls, offices, hotels and restaurants, showrooms, international communications networks, bowling, billiards, fitness Centre, multi-purpose halls, cinemas and ball rooms and parking lot for 2,000 cars.


(2) Myanmar delegation leaves for Colombia and Cuba

YANGON, 5 April- Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung left here by air this evening for Colombia and Cuba to attend the 13th Ministerial Conference of Non-Aligned Movement to be held from 7 to 9 April in Cartagena, Colombia, and the South Summit of the Group of 77 to be held from 10 to 14 April in Havana, Cuba.

The minister was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein and officials. The minister was accompanied by Director General U Kyaw Tint Swe and Deputy director U Kyaw Tin of International Organizations and Economic Department,Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The delegation also includes Permanent Representative of the Union of Myanmar  to the United Nations in New York, U Win Mra and Permanent Representative of the Union of Myanmar to the United Nations  in Geneva, U Mya Than.

(3) MoU on cooperation in agriculture sector signed

YANGON, 5 April—A delegation led by visiting Minister of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China Mr Chen Yaobang together with Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin visited booths of Agricultural Museum in Myepadetha Park in Bahan Township this morning.

They also visited the Nursery Market Festival in Myepadetha Park.Then, the signing ceremony of Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in agriculture sector between Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and Ministry of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China was held at the meeting hall of the office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation at 9 am today.

Present on the occasion were Minister of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China Mr Chen Yaobang and party, Ambassador of PRC Mr Liang Dong, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Khin Maung and U Ohn Myint, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and Minister of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China Mr Chen Yaobang made speeches on the occasion. Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and Minister Mr Chen Yaobang signed the MoU and exchanged documents.


(4) Seminar on 21st Century Technology from Finland and Poster Exhibition held

YANGON, 5 April- Seminar on 21st century Technology from Finland and Poster Exhibition was held at Traders Hotel at 2 pm today.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone.Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun and officials of the ministries, officials of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry and private companies and guests.

Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel made a speech. Trade Commissioner of Finpro Finland Trade Centre Bangkok Dr Jussi pekka Aittola and officials of seven companies of Finland explained about the mechanical and electronic technology and poster exhibition. The seven companies of Finland are participating in the seminar and' poster exhibition.


(5) Farms of Home Affairs Ministry supplying food and other goods to Yangon

YANGON,5 April-Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing inspected farming activities of his ministry today.

Accompanied by Director-General of Prisons Department U Kyaw Tun, Director General of Bureau of Special Investigations U Than Myint and officials, the minister inspected the general store and 'fruit and flower market  under the supervision of the ministry in Insein Township. He cordially met with shoppers. The goods are supplied to the shop by the integrated farms of the ministry in Ayeyawady , Bago , Magway, Yandon Division and Shan State  under the ministry.

The shops of the ministry are also selling rice produced from Bawathit farms at reasonable prices. Edible oil is also available at the shops at K 360 per viss. At the integrated farm of MPF, the minister inspected poultry breeding, fish breeding and nurseries. Products of the farms of PD and MPF are being distributed to markets and shops in the city.

The minister and party then proceeded to Nyaungdon Township in Ayeyawady Division where they inspected paddy and edible crops cultivation and poultry and fish breeding of No3 Bawathit Farm.Officials of the farm reported to the minister on salient points of the farm. Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing gave suggestions. In Hmawby Township, the minister and party inspected the integrated farm of MPF.

Officials reported to the minister on agriculture and livestock breeding projects of the farm. The minister attended to the requirements. At Laydaunkkan village the minister and party looked into the requirements of the agriculture and livestock breeding station of MPF.

(6) ASEAN- COCI Meeting continues for third day

 YANGON, 5 April-The participants discussed in two groups at the 35th Meeting of ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information continued for the third day today at the Traders Hotel.

Present were Chairman of Work Committee for Holding the 35th Meeting of ASEAN-COCI Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, delegates of ASEAN nations Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei and the Philippines and officials of ASEAN Secretariat.

The meeting of the group-l was co-chaired by Chairman of the National Committee on ASEAN Culture and Information Secretary of the Committee for Holding the 35th Meeting of ASEAN-COCI Director General of Cultural Institute U Myint Thein Swe and Executive Director Mr Pornsawan Utarnwuthipong of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand.

The group-l discussed the financial report on ASEAN culture and information projects, progress report on projects of dialogue partners and ASEAN COCI Office and scheduled projects within fiscal 1999-2000.

The meeting of the group 2 was cochaired by Chairman of Information Subcommittee of 35th Meeting of ASEAN-COCI Director General of Myanma Radio and TV U Khin Maung Htay and Deputy General Secretary Ms Chakrarot Chitrabongs of National Cultural Commission Office of Thailand. The meeting continues on 6 April.


(7) Minister for Culture receives Bangladesh Ambassador

YANGON, 5 April-Minister for Culture U Win Sein received Ambassador of Bangladesh to the Union of Myanmar Mr Ahmed Rahim at his office at 1 pm today. They cordially discussed further promotion of bilateral cultural cooperation.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, Director General of Department of Cultural Institute U Myint Thein Swe, Director-General of Department of Archaeology U Nyunt Han, Acting Director-General of Fine Arts Department U Ba Hsan, Rector of University of Culture U Tin Soe and officials.


(8) PRC delegation concludes visit

YANGON, S April-The visiting delegation led by Minister of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China Mr Chen Yaobang left here by air this mooring.

They were seen off by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Khin Maung and U Ohn Myint, Ambassador of China to the Union of Myanmar Mr Liang Dong, embassy staff and responsible officials

(9) Chief Justice receives Bangladesh Ambassador

YANGON, 5 April-Chief Justice U Aung Toe received Ambassador of Bangladesh to the Union:of Myanmar Mr Ahmed Rahim at his office at 10 am today. Also present was Director-General of Supreme Court U Tin Aye.


(10) Deputy Minister meets LPDR counterpart

 YANGON, 5 April-Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein met Deputy Minister Mr Bouabane Volakhoune of Ministry of Culture and Information, Lao People's Democratic Republic who arrived here to attend the 35th Meeting of ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information at the meeting hall of Myanma Radio and Television Department on Pyay Road at 12.30 pm today.

Also present at the call were Ambassador of Lao PDR to the Union of Myanmar Mr Ly Bounkham, Managing Director Col Bo Kyi of Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise , Officer on Special Duty Col Myint Thein of Ministry of Information and Head of Office U Soe Aung.


(11) Ceremony to share merits for the Phayahnahsu Kyaunetaik held

 YANGON, 5April A ceremony to share merits for the renovation of the Phayahnahsu Kuaungtaik held at the kyaungtaik on Htidan Setmyay Ward in Kyimyindine Township this afternoon.

Sayadaw Bhaddanta Dhammasami from Maha Htupayon Kyaungtaik in Kyimyindine administered the Five Precepts.Members of the Sangha recited the parittas and mingala suttas. Offertories were presented to members of the Sangha. Well-wishers Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung and wife Daw Khin Khin Lay Presented K 60,000, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein and wife Daw Tin Tin Nwe K 5,000, Deputy Minister for Progress of Boder Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin and wife Daw Su Su K 15,000, Myanma Radio and Television K 55,000, News and Periodicals Enterprise K 55,000, Printing and Publishing Enterprise K 55,000, Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise K 50,000,
Information and Public Relations Department K 20,000, Head of Office of the Ministry of Information K 15,000 and others to officials for the renovation of Phayahnahsu Kyaungtaik.

(12) Development of Institutional Capacity for Demand Reduction among High Risk Groups meeting held

 YANGON, 5 April-The review meeting on Development of Institutional Capacity for Demand Reduction among High Risk Groups under the Drug Abuse Control Programme sponsored by UNDCP and Myanmar, China, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, was held at the Hotel Equatorial this morning. Present were representatives from MoU countries including Myanmar, China, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam national planning coordinators, officials of Education Planning and Training Department, Health Department, Information and Public Relations Department and Social Welfare Department totaling 35 persons.

Project Manager Dr Marc Morival explained about the work carried out in the first year of the project. Representatives from MoU countries will take part. in the discussions. The seminar on analysis course will be held at the hotel from 6 to 7 April.


(13) Outstanding staff of Ministry of Religious Affairs honored

 YANGON, 5 April-The staff of the Minister of Religious Affairs who were awarded modal of honor and medal for good service by the State Feace and Development Council on 4 January, were honored at Kaba Aye Hill this afternoon. Present on the occasion were Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin and Theravada Buddhist Missionary University, and officials. Minister U Aung Khin explained awarding of medals by the government and urged the staff to be dutiful and loyal.


(14) Implementation of 15-Year Narcotic Drug Eradication Plan reviewed

YANGON, 5 April - A meeting was held at Myanmar Police Force Head Office this morning to review the implementation within the first year of the First Five-Year Short-Term Project of the 15-Year Narcotic Drug Eradication Plan and to collect data on drug abuses.

Chairman of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung delivered an address.

The 15-Year Narcotic Drug Eradication Plan was initiated in 1999-2000 under the guidance of the Head of State. The first year of the First Five-Year Short-Term Project of the Plan ended at present. The meeting was held to review the accomplishments and weak points during the year and to appraise the work region-wise Narcotic drugs eradication campaign must be launched on national scale. Secretary of CCDAC Director-General of MPF Police Maj-Gen Soe Win explained points of the 15-Year Narcotic Drug Eradication Plan and data collection.

A general round of discussions followed. The Chairman and Secretary of CCDAC gave clarifications. Also present were senior officers of the Ministry of Defence, secretaries of work states and divisions, police officers ands others.

(15) 21,000 stimulant tablets seized in Mongshu

YANGON, 5 April-A combined team comprising local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched Ma Aye Paing's house, and arrested Ma Aye Paing, daughter of U Sanda, Loihsaunghtauk Region No 5, Mongshu Gemland, Mongshu, Shan State (South) and Ma Aye Sein, daughter of U Hlaing Kham, Region No 3, Kongmyinttha Ward, Mongshu, together with 21,000 stimulant tablets bearing the words "WY".

Action is being taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(16) 12 Monyin NLD members resign of own accord

 YANGON, 5 April-Twelve members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Monyin Township, Kachin State.

Twelve members of Monyin Township NLD, Kachin State, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Monyin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 8 January 2000 as the no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.


(17) Under-l9 Championship qualifier

YANGON, 5 April-Under- 19 Myanmar youth soccer team was runner-up in the Group 6 qualifiers for 32nd Under-l9 Asian Youth Championship held in Diyang, Sichuan Province, People's Republic of China, from 1 to 5 April .

Myanmar was defeated by China 3-0 in the 1 April match. Myanmar beat Indonesia 3-0 in the 3 April match and Chinese Taipei 3-0 in the 5 April match.

The national team is also taking part in group 6 qualifiers for Asian Cup Championship in Seoul. Myanmar beat Mongolia 2-0 in the 5 April match and meets Laos on 7 April and South Korea on 9 April.
