(1) Umbrella Factory, Soap Factory of Industry-1 Ministry inaugurated in Mandalay

YANGON, 20 March - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended inauguration of Myanma Umbrella Factory Mandalay and Soap Factory (Mandalay) in Mandalay today.

Accompanied by ministers, deputy ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department and officials, the Secretary-l left here for Mandalay by air this morning.

Accompanied by the commander and officials, the Secretary-1 and party attended inauguration of Myanma Umbrella Factory (Mandalay) of Myanma General and Maintenance Industries of the Ministry of Industry-l in Chanayethazan Township.

The Secretary-1 unveiled the signboard of the factory Managing Director of MGMI U Thaik Tun and Factory Manager Daw Khin Nyunt formally opened the factory.

U Thaik Tun reported on location and area of the factory, the production process, the number and types of umbrellas to be produced, availability of raw materials, plans to manufacture and distribute quality umbrellas at low prices and staff strength and welfare activities.

Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung gave an additional report.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said in accord with the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe it is required to produce and distribute quality umbrellas as import substitute goods.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected the factory.

The factory is projected to manufacture 200,000 umbrellas annually.

The inauguration of the Soap Factory of Myanma Pharmaceutical Industries under the Ministry of Industry-1 was held in Aungmyethazan Township . The Secretary-1 unveiled the signboard of the factory.

Managing Director of MPI Col Myint Oo and Factory Manager U Win Ko Ko formally opened the factory. Minister U Aung Thaung and Col Myint Oo explained location of the factory, project period, the production method and capacity, soap consumption per capita, production capacity of State-owned and private soap factories, the building of the soap factory to fulfil local demand and installation of machinery by Myanmar experts of MPI and Seinban Industrial Cooperative Syndicate only with locally- manufactured machines.

Chairman of SICS U Kyaw Win explained the history of the syndicate, the building of soap factories in Yangon and Mandalay by the syndicate without using imported items and plans to build another soap factory in Magway.

The Secretary- 1 said construction of the factory is the realization of the Head of State's guidance and the victory of the syndicate. Production of the entire parts of machines by the syndicate is an encouraging sign for the nation. He said it was a pride for him to attend the opening of a factory built by Myanmar experts without using foreign made equipment, hoping that the syndicate will build more advanced factories in the future.

As the government is rendering assistance to the national entrepreneurs, they should strive for upgrading their techniques and ability and for the emergence of a modem and developed nation.

The factory is targeted to produce 13,200 tons of soap yearly.

In Amarapura Township, the Secretary-l and party at- tended ceremony to present provisions to members of the Sangha at Maha Gandayon Monastery.

The Secretary-1 presented robes, offertories and provisions to members of the Sangha.

Patron of the monastery member of the State Working Committee of the Sangha Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Kundalabhivamsa administered the Five Precepts.

Robes, offertories and provisions were presented to members of the Sangha.

Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kundtalabhimsa delivered a sermon.

The congregation shared the merits gained.

The Secretary-l and party inspected construction of a three-storey building in the compound of the monastery.

They arrived back here in the evening.

(2) Kanbawza Bank Ltd opens Latha Branch

YANGON, 20 March - A ceremony to open Latha Branch of Kanbawza Bank Ltd was held at Lanmadaw Condominium Centre in Lanmadaw Township this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present were ministers, deputy ministers, senior military officers, the Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar, Chairman of Kanbawza Bank Ltd U Aung Ko Win and officials and guests.

Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein formally unveiled the signboard of Lanmadaw Branch.   Afterwards, Minister U Khin Maung Thein, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Chairman of Kanbawza Bank Ltd U Aung Ko Win formally opened the branch.

Then, the Secretary-2 and party inspected the functions of the branch.

A ceremony to mark the opening of Lanmadaw Branch was held at the Traders Hotel.

Minister U Khin Maung Thein said that Latha Branch is the fourth of Kanbawza Bank Ltd.

It is found that State-owned banks and private banks including Kanbawza Bank are providing assistance for development of the State, and Kanbawza Bank is also participating in efforts for uplift of standard of sports and social sectors.

In conclusion, the minister said that private banks are to strive for development of banking services and give priority to serving the interests of the State.

Managing Director of Kanbawza Bank Ltd U Zaw Win Naing spoke words of thanks.

Kanbawza Bank Ltd has been making rapid progress since its establishment and donating its annual profits to efforts for improvement of standard of Myanma football.

Altogether 716 people have opened accounts at the branch and deposited over K 837 million.


(3) Leading Committee for Observance of 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day meets

YANGON, 20 March - The Leading Committee for Observance of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day held its sixth coordination meeting at the Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this morning, attended by Chairman of the Leading Committee for Observance of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Chairman of the Leading Committee for Observance of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo said the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day will soon be observed and requirements are to be reported.

Chairman of Management Committee for Observance of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than reported on measures undertaken by the Management Committee.

Chairman of Parade Work Committee Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint reported on work.

Chairman of Committee for Display of Nation-building endeavours Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe reported on progress of work of the committee.

Officiating Colonel Air Staff Lt-Col Tin Win reported on measures under-taken by Literary and Arts Competition Committee.

Chairman of Work Committee for Literary and Photo Competition Deputy Minister for Information U Thein Sein, Secretary of Work Committee for Poem and Arts Competition Committee, Deputy Chief of Armed Forces Training (Air) Col Ko Ko and Chairman of University, College, Institute and Basic Education Schools Literary and Art Competition Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung reported on work.

Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo and senior military officers, departmental officials also reported on work.

Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo took part in the discussions.

After the meeting, Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected the booth of the Twelve Objectives and preparation of hall to Defence Services Museum.

Lt-Gen Tin Oo met members of Mingaladon Township Union Solidarity and Development Association who were participating in computer quiz on the Twelve Objectives of the State in commemoration of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day.

YANGON, 20 March - Hailing the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, cash and kind were donated to Tatmadaw members at the office of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this afternoon, attended by Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Ministry of Health presented health education pamphlets worth K 500,000, U Aung Sein-Daw Nyunt Nyunt Sein of White House Restaurant in Thanlyin five Fuso passenger buses worth K 25 million, U Hla Htay-Daw Tin Nwe Oo of Hmacho Medical Hall medicines worth K 809,280, U Kyaw Naing of Kyaw Naing and Associates and U Aung Zaw Win of Shine Construction two suits of hockey goalie worth US $ 4 ,000 and 30 hockey balls worth K 30000, U Thein Aung-Daw Aye 20,000 ball points worth K 500,000, Chairman of Myanmar Rice Merchants and Dealers Association U Nyein 820 viss of chicken worth K 410,000, Annawa Fisheries 3,000 viss of fish worth K 400,000, Thiha Suddhamma Manijotadhara U Tin Win-Daw San Win of KN Co K 300,000 and other well-wishers medicines, ointments cigarettes and cash.

Lt-Gen Tin Oo accepted the donations and gifts.


(5) National Commission for Environmental Affairs meets

YANGON, 20 March - The National Commission for Environmental Affairs (NCEA) held its 12th Session at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman of NCEA Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung said the 12th Session of the Commission was specially convened to consider the Draft-Myanmar Environmental Protection Law by the Commission members. He also said that the Draft-Myanmar Environmental Protection Law is being finalized by the Attorney-General's Office and will eventually be submitted to the cabinet. The minister stressed that the NCEA is doing its utmost in environmental protection endeavours including preparation of National Report on Convention to Combat Desertification and implementation of Montreal Protocol in Myanmar.

At present, the Commission with the support and cooperation of the Japan International Cooperation Age (JICA) is carrying out Air Quality Monitoring in Yangon.

NCEA Secretary U Kyaw Tint Swe presented the report of the Commission for September 1999 to February 2000.

The meeting ended with concluding remarks by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win.

Also present were members of the Commission, guests and NCEA officials.

(6) Minster inspects booth of Ministry of Health

YANGON, 20 March - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein accompanied by Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Director General of Health Planning Department Dr Kyi Soe and officials inspected the display of health for entire nation at the 12 objectives of the state exhibitions, display of Ministry of Health at the nation-building endeavours booth and displays of the Ministry-wise this afternoon and gave instructions.


(7) Minister receives foreign visitors

YANGON, 20 March - Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein received Managing Director Mr Schoeltzke of Fritz Werner Co of the Federal Republic of Germany and party at his office this morning.

Also present on the occasion was Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar.


(8) Booth of Ministry of CPT at Defence Services Museum inspected

YANGON, 20 March - Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin arrived at Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this afternoon.

The minister, accompanied by officials of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications and Directorate of Telecommunications, inspected display of reports on extended postal, telegraph and telephone stations, commemorative stamps, models of satellite and auto-exchanges, microwave connections, satellite communication with foreign countries, communication of under-water cable, sorts of telephone being used in Myanmar, functions of the Directorate of Telecommunications and progress, pictures and charts describing the functions of the ministry in the booth of Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs at the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative Exhibition.

The minister also inspected documentary photos and charts displayed in Nation-Building Endeavours Booth.

Then, the minister gave necessary instructions.

(9) 90th birthday ceremony of Chairman of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee   Myingyan Sayadawgyi begins

YANGON, 20 March - The firstday programme of 90th birthday ceremony of Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Myingyan Koehsaungtaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita began at Five Nikaya Pitaka Thonbon Sarthintaik on Pale Yadana Road in Ward 26, Dagon Myothit (South) Township, this morning. Officials offered 'soon' to 1,000 members of the Sangha including 600 State Ovadac,ariya Sayadaws, members of the State Central Working Committee of the Sangha and title recipient Sayadaws and 400 members of the Sangha of Myingyan District and disciple monks of the Chairman Sayadawgyi.

The Pujaniya ceremony was held at Pyilon Chantha Ordination Hall. Chairman Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita paid respects to above-90 Mahathera Sayadaws.

Under 90 Sayadaws also paid homage to Chairman Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita with the verse recited by Magway Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara.

Then, the ceremony concluded with reciting Buddha Sasanam ,Ciram Titthatu three times.

Well-wisher Mr Li Chon Yon and Mrs Lilo Su Hun and family donated provisions to Sayadaws and nuns.

In the evening, Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Maha Dhammakathika Bahujana Hitadhara Thegon Thabeikaing Sayadaw Ashin Nanissra delivered a sermon at the Ordination Hall of the Sarthintaik to mark the birthday ceremony of the Myingyan Sayadawgyi.


(10) Thai Minister of Agriculture & Cooperatives and party arrive

YANGON, 20 March - At the invitation of Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, a delegation of 16 led by Minister of Agriculture and Co-operatives of Thailand Mr Pongpol Adireksam arrived here by air this morning.

They were welcomed by Minister U Aung Phone, Thai Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Pensak Chalarak and staff, departmental heads and officials of Ministry of Forestry and Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation at Yangon International Airport.

Minister U Aung Phone received Thai Minister and party at his office at 11 am today. Next, Thai Minister and party met Myanmar officials led by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin at the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation. They discussed promotion of the agriculture and economic sectors between the two countries.

Then, the Thai Minister and party proceeded to the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries and met with Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin hosted dinner in honour of Thai Minister and party at the International Business Centre.


(11) Minister inspects progress of road, bridge projects in Kayin, Mon States

YANGON, 20 March - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, accompanied by officials of Public Works, inspected progress in construction of new straight Kawkyaik-Kawparan-Zathabyin Road in connection with the approach road of Zathabyin suspension bridge in Hpa-an on 17 March. The minister gave instructions on arrangements to be implemented for repair of road sections before rainy season and attended to their needs.

In Mawlamyine, the minister and party arrived at the site chosen for construction

on of Thanlwin River Bridge (Mawlamyine). The stake was driven at the designated place for the bridge by the minister. Construction of the bridge began on 17 March.

The minister inspected preparations for construction of Thanlwin River Bridge (Mawlamyine) and provided requirements of cement, iron bars and fuel to the officials.

(12) Victorious women's archery team honoured

YANGON, 20 March - Victorious women's archery team was honoured at Karaweik Pal ace this afternoon.

Chairperson Dr Daw May May Yi spoke on the occasion.

Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented K 100,000 each to archers.

Dr May May Yi of Myanmar Women's Affairs Committee presented K 100,000 for the fund of the federation, Director Daw San San Kywe of Zay Gabar Co Ltd ,K 100,000 and K 120,000 for reception, Siri Suddhammasingi Daw Aye Aye Kyi,  K 100,000 and Daw Khin Nwe Yi ,               K 100,000 and former sprints champion Daw Soe Soe Yi, K 20,000 to member of Panel of Patrons of Myanmar Women's Sport Federation Daw Khin Than Nwe.

On behalf of the archers, Police Inspector Thi Thi Win expressed thanks.


(13) Myanmar girls sent back from Macao

YANGON, 20 March - Myanmar girls, who had been tempted to go abroad with offers of job and forced to work as prostitutes there, were sent back to Myanmar through Myanmar Consulate after Macao Immigration Department and Police Force had laid bare the case according to the information given by the Consulate in Hong Kong. Sai Ywet Saw and Ma Nang Hwe, who ran Thaiyai Restaurant at No 133, 19th Street, Latha Township, Yangon, lured some girls who patronized their restaurant, with offers of overseas employment, and sent them to Macao through Bangkok.

One Mr Wong Si Kwang persuaded and intimidated these girls to make a living by prostitution in Macao. Some of them managed to get away and make contact with Myanmar Consulate in Hong Kong. Officials of Myanmar Consulate informed Macao Immigration Department and Police Force of the incident, and Macao Police Force arrested Mr Wong Si Kwang and have taken action against him.

Severe action is being taken against Sai Ywet Saw and Ma Nang Hwe according to the law.

(14) 8 members resign from Taungtha NLD of own accord

YANGON, 20 March - Eight members resigned of their own accord from the National League for Democracy of Taungtha Township, Mandalay Division.

Eight members of Taungtha Township NLD, Manda- lay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 17 December 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
