(1) Religious titles presented to 222 Sayadaws, nine nuns, 18 lay persons for purification,  perpetuation, promotion of Sasana 

YANGON, 19 March - Religious titles were conferred on members of the Sangha, nuns and lay persons for their brilliant services in striving towards purification, perpetuation and promotion of Buddha Sasana and Pariyatti and Patipatti Sasana this afternoon in Maha Pasana Cave at Kaba Aye here.

The State Peace and Development Council as a means of paying reverence to these members of the Sangha, nuns and laity for their religious services, issued the Notification 1/2000 and conferred religious titles on them.

The State orchestra played Dhamma songs before the ceremony.

Officials of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana ushered State Ovadacariya Sayadaws and Sayadaws of State Central Working Committee of the Sangha to the designated places.

Director U Chit Khin of Religious Affairs Department, Director U Htin Myo of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana and Director U Kyaw Nyein of RAD and Director U Tun Hla of RAD ushered member Sayadaw of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, Tipitakadhara Sayadaws, title recipient Sayadaws and nuns.

Then, Staff Officer U Tun Naing of RAD, Deputy Director U Htay Aung of RAD, Director U Tun Mya Aung of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana, Deputy Director Director-General Dr Myo Myint of RAD read the agenda of the ceremony.

Adviser to the State Peace and Development Council Office U Arnt Maung formally opened the ceremony.

On behalf of Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Myingyan Koehsaungtaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita, Vice-Chairman Maha Aungmye-bonsankyaung Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Bhaddanta Panindabhivamsa administered the Five Precepts.

Next, religious titles were conferred on religious title recipient Sayadaws from inside the country and abroad and nuns and lay persons.

Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye presented Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru titles to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Agghiya of Maha Visuddhayon Taikthit Zayamaydani Wasokyaung in Maha Aungmye Township,

Mandalay and Sayadaw Bhaddanta Panindabhivamsa of Maha Aungmye Bonsankyaungtaik in Bahan Township, Yangon Division.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotka titles to Bhaddanta Pandita of Ananda Thuriyakyaung in Sagaing and Sayadaw Bhaddanta Indobhasa of Yaykyi Mingala Kyaungtaik in Pathein, Ayeyawady Division.

Next, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo presented Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika titles to Thidayonkydung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Ottarabhivamsa of Thayettaw Kyaungtaik in Lanmadaw Township and Bhaddanta Visuddha of Dhamma Lankara Kyaungtaik in Bago.

Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint presented Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika titles to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Samvara of Mahasi Sasana Yeiktha in Bahan Township.

Then, Minister for Religious Affairs supplicated on religious affairs.

Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin said there are three kinds of the Sasana namely, Pariyatti, Patipatti and Pativeda. Members of the Sangha have been discharging missionary duties and ancient kings and governments provided assistance to Sasana after seeking ovadakatha from the members of the Sangha.

According to noble traditions, the State Peace and Development Council government conferred religious titles on 222 members of the Sangha, nine nuns and 18 lay persons under the notification No 1/2000 issued on 4 January 2000.

The religious titles were conferred on them for their morals, wisdom, concentration of mind and dignity and efforts for perpetuation of the Sasana.

He expressed thanks for living guidance by the government and assistance by the ministries concerned and well-wishers.

State Ovadacariya Sayadaw Maha Withoaddayon raikthit Zayamaydani Wasokyaung Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Bhaddanta Agghiya delivered Sammodaniva Ovadakatha.

In his Sammodaniya Ovadakatha, the Sayadaw elaborated on the holding of the religious title conferring ceremony. Afterwards, the Sayadaw  said that in accord with the tradition which ancient monarches had observed since the time of the Buddha, the State Peace and Development Council has conferred religious titles on Sayadaws, members of the Sangha, nuns and lay persons to whom respects and honour are due.

The Sayadaw added that people of all persuasions living in the world have in common that they all want to live a life of bliss and prosperity.

The Sayadaw elaborated on the six causes which engender prosperity and bliss, and stated that they are to be healthy, to have good morals, to follow the counsel of the wise, to have a wealth of knowledge, to avoid vices and do good deeds, and to have strong perseverance and industry without feeling dejected.

Then, Secretary Sayadaw of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Maha Saddhamajotika Presiding Sayadaw of Maha Withutarama Kyaungtaik of Magway Bhaddanta Kumara delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits. The State Peace and Development Council Office, ministries. departments, organizations, District and Township Peace and Development Councils and well-wishers offered alms valued at over K 57.632 million to Sayadaws and members of die Sangha who attended the religious title conferring ceremony.


(2) Secretary-1 attends soft opening of Ahlon Wharf No 1

YANGON, 19 March - The soft opening of Ahlon Wharf No 1 of Asia World Port Terminal Project (Ahlon) under; the Myanma Port Authority and Asia World Port Management Co Ltd, was held at the wharf on Kwinchaung Street in Ahlon Township at 8 am today, attended by Secretary- l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe said that Myanma Port Authority and Asia World signed an agreement on the construction of Ahlon Wharf No l on 25 November 1998. Ahlon Wharf No 2 was opened on 21 December 1997 and construction of Ahlon Wharf No l has already been completed. It was targetted to invest US $ 21 million and K 1,251 million, he said.

The original wharf was extended up to 651.5 feet in length.

Upon completion of the port terminal, the l 5,000-ton ocean liners can berth, and the capacity of freight-handling at Yangon Port can be enhanced, he said.

Then, Managing Director of Asia World Port Management Co Ltd U Tun Myint Naing spoke on the occasion.

The Ahlon wharf No 1 project began on 25 April 1996, he said. He said his company is participating in the development work of the State in accord with the economic objective calling for the initiative to shape the national economy must be kept in the hands of the State and the national peoples, he noted.

The Asia World Co Ltd has participated in construction of roads for the development of transport sector, border areas and national races, in industrial and agriculture sectors and in the port construction projects.

Then, Managing Director U Tun Myint Naing presented gifts to Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt pressed the button to unveil the stone plaque of the wharf.

Managing Director of Myanma Port Authority U Thein Htay and U Tun Myint Naing formally opened the wharf.

Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe pressed the button to start the loading of goods onto MVContinental Glory.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt performed the ritual of golden and silver showers to mark the soft opening of the wharf.

After the ceremony, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party inspected the wharf.

There are 600-ton and 700-ton gantry cranes to handle the containers and general cargo at the wharf.

The wharf is equipped with the rubber fender and the bollard.

Three ships can berth at the wharf at the same time.


(3) Chief of Staff (Army) inspects hostels of Anawrahta, Bayintnaung and Aungzeya Parade Columns

YANGON, 19 March - Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo went to No (1) Transit Centre on Bayintnaung Road this morning and inspected hostels and messes of Anawrahta, Bayintnaung and Aungzeya Columns which will be participating in the parade of 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day.

At 9.45 am, the Chief of Staff (Army) arrived at No I Transit Centre where he was welcomed by Parade Commander Brig-Gen Htay Oo, Vice Quartermaster-General Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, Deputy Adjutant-General Col Ye Tun, column commanders, Commandant of No 1 Transit Centre Lt-Col Tin Kyaing and officials.

First, the Chief of Staff (Army) took the salute of Tatmadaw members of Anawrahta, Bayintnaung and Aungzeya Columns at the parade ground and explained administrative matters, discipline, welfare programme, health, accommodation and reception and measures for security sector.

Afterwards, the Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day inspected welfare shops of Ministry of Industry-l, hostels, toilets, stores, galley and messes for parade columns and vegetable patches of the columns. He then gave necessary instructions.

In the meeting hall of the Centre, the Chief of Staff (Army) met Parade Commander Brig-Gen Htay Oo and senior military officers and gave instructions on taking follow-up measures after the inspection of the centre, observance of discipline, welfare, security, health and sanitation.
 


(4) Minister hoists Htidaw atop Gyaing (Kawkareik) TadaU Pagoda 

YANGON, 19 March - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, accompanied by officials of Public Works, attended opening ceremony of Dhammasala Yeiktha of the Ministry of Construction built on the platform of Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda in Kyaikto Township on 16 March and formally opened the Yeiktha.

The minister and party paid obeisance to the pagoda and made donations.

On 17 March, the minister, accompanied by Chairman of Kayin State Peace and Development Council Col Saw Khin Soe and officials of Public Works, attended Htidaw-hoisting ceremony of Gyaing (Kawkareik) TadaU Pagoda.

First, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Chairman Col Saw Khin Soe and officials conveyed the religious objects and kept them in the reliquary.

Then, Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Col Saw Khin Soe hoisted the Htidaw, Hngetmyatnadaw and Seinbudaw atop the pagoda and performed the rituals of golden and silver showers to mark the successful completion of the ceremony.

After the consecration ceremony, Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Col Saw Khin Soe and officials donated provisions to members of the Sangha. They then offered 'soon' to the Sayadaws.

Next, the minister inspected arrangements for durability of Gyaing (Kawkareik) steel suspension bridge and gave instructions on tasks to be done in time.

The minister and party also inspected the repair of road from Kawkareik to Kyondo and gave necessary instructions. They then proceeded to Mawlamyine.
 


(5) Merits shared for offering of soon and provisions to Sayadaws. members of the  Sangha and nuns 

YANGON, 19 March - A ceremony to share merits gained for the offering of soon and provisions to Sayadaws and members of the Sanghatatkatho attended the religious title conferring ceremony and State Ovadacariya Sayadaws, member Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee and member Sayadaws of the State Central Working Committee of the Sangha who attended the Sixth Meeting of the Fourth State Central Working Committee of the Sangha, was held at Maha Nayaka Kyaungsaung, Kaba Aye, this morning.

Patron of the Yangon Division Central Committee for the Offering of Provisions Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than supplicated on matters related to the merits-sharing ceremony.

Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Maha Aungmyaybonsan Kyaungtaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Paninda Bhivamsa invested the congregation with the Five Precepts.

The Sayadaws and members of the Sangha recited parittas.

In his supplication, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than spoke of arrangements and coordination work for the holding of the provisions-offering ceremony at the end of the Sixth Meeting of the Fourth State Central Working Committee of the Sangha and the religious title conferring ceremony.

He added that under the sponsorship of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, provisions donated by well-wishers and soon were offered to 223 Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika title holder Sayadaws, 379 Sayadaws and 9 nuns who attended the Sixth Meeting of the Fourth State Central Working Committee of the Sangha totalling 611.

He said that donations made by ministries, Yangon Command, battalions and units, departments, Division, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, religious associations and well-wishers, amounted to over K 57.632 million.

Then, Secretary Sayadaw of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Magway Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara delivered a sermon.

State Ovadacariya Sayadaw Ashekyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Canda of Dayelu Village, Kungyangon Township, and disciples donated K 50,000 to the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee and a pair of bronze Kamawa to Nikaya Pariyatti Sarthintaik of Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Myingyan Koesaungtaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than handed over donations to Minister U Aung Khin.

Then, soon was offered to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha.


(6) Appointment of Ambassador of Ukraine agreed on

YANGON, 20 March - The Government of the Union of Myanmar has agreed to the appointment of HE Mr Rostislav Mitrofanovich Bilodid as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the Union of Myanmar. HE Mr Rostislav Mitrofanovich Bilodid was horn in 1932 and obtained a science degree from Kyiv State University. He served in the Soviet Union Army from 1951 to 1956. He has been a member of scientific staff of the Presidium of the Ukrainian Academy of Science in Kyiv from 1967 to 1972 he has worked at the Secretariat of the United Nations in New York. After that he has been an assistant of the President of the Ukrainian Academy of Science in Kyiv till 1979 and he has served as Chief of the Department of International Relations of the Presidium of the Ukrainian Academy of Science in Kiyiv up to 1993.

Mr Bilodid was appointed as Minister-Counsellor in 1993 and served as a Charge d' affaires of Ukraine in the Lithovian Republic,

later he was appointed as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Lithovian in 1994. Since March 1999, he is Ambassador of Ukraine to Vietnam and will be concurrently accredited to the Union of Myanmar with residence in Hanoi.


(7) 39 Nattalin NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 19 March - Thirty-nine members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Nattalin Township, Bago Division.

Thirty-nine members of Nattalin Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Nattalin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the. party concerned on 4 November 1999 as they no longer wished to Participate in party politics of NLD.
