(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe and Daw  Kyaing Kyaing and families of Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) offer soon to Sayadaws

YANGON, 18 March - Under the patronage of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing, the State Peace and Development Council and families of the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) offered soon to State Ovadacariya Sayadaws, member Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee,  member Sayadaws of the State Central Working Committee of Sangha and Title Recipient Sayadaws at  Tatmadaw Dhammayon on Arzani Road in Bahan Township this morning.

Present on the occasion were State Ovadacariya Sayadaws, member Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, member Sayadaws of the State Central Working Committee of Sangha, Title Recipient Sayadaws and Title Recipient Nuns.

Adviser to the State Peace and Development Council U Arnt Maung acted as master of ceremonies and read the agenda of the ceremony.

After that, the soon-offering ceremony was opened by reciting namotassa three times.

Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party received the Five Precepts from Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamajotika Myingyan Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita.

Then, the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha recited parittas.

Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party offered alms to the Sayadaws and members of the  Sangha.

Secretary Sayadaw of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamajotika Magway Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara delivered a sermon.

Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party shared merits gained for the good deeds.  Afterwards, the three-time recitation of Buddha sasanam ciram tirhatu brought the ceremony to an end.

After that, Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and party offered soon to the
Sayadaws.


(2) Secretary-1 attends opening of Invasive Cardiovascular Laboratory of Asia Royal        Cardiac and Medical Care

YANGON, 18 March - The opening ceremony of Invasive Cardiovascular Laboratory was held at Asia  Royal Cardiac and Medical Care of Asia Royal Co Ltd at No 14 Baho Road in Sangyoung Township this  afternoon, attended by Chairman of Myanmar National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace  and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Cardiovascular diagnosis machine was donated by Dr Keishoku Sakuraba of Juntendo University
Orthopaedics Hospital of Japan to Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association.

Present were ministers, the Chief Justice, the deputy minister for health, senior military officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the directors-general of departments under the  Ministry of Health, medical superintendents, physicians, Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Dr Daw  Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairman Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, EC members, patrons of Asia Royal Co Ltd,  officials and guests.

Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Chairperson. of MMCWA Dr Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Patron of  Asia Royal Co Ltd U Sun Teik formally opened the clinic.

The Secretary-l pressed the button to use the cardiovascular diagnosis machine.

The Secretary-l and party inspected the cardiovascular diagnosis room and the intensive care room.

Chairperson of MMCWA Dr Daw Kyu Kyu Swe said treatment can be given to cardiac patients with the use of the valuable machine donated by Dr Keishoku Sakuraba. In order to use effectively and systematically MMCWA undertook the measures in accord with the directives of national Health Committee, he said.

Medical scientists in Myanmar and patients would have opportunity to use the machine and treatment could be given to cardiac patients in the country instead of having to receive treatment abroad. She believed it would prevent foreign exchange from being wasted to some extent.

Patron of Asia Royal Co Ltd U Aik Tun next spoke.

It is the first private up-to-date-equipment-installed laboratory for cardiac patients. The emergency unit and medical store will be kept open round the clock.

(3) Secretary-1 views display of exhibition booths at Defence Services Museum

YANGON, 18 March - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt,  accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the Defence Services Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road at 12.30 pm today.

Then, Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected the booths of the twelve objectives of the State, the
Directorate of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute and the ministries and left  there in the afternoon.


(4) Sixth general meeting of Myanmar Rice Wholesalers Association held

YANGON,  18 March - The sixth general meeting of Myanmar Rice Wholesalers Association for 1999- 2000 was held at Yuzana Hall of Yuzana Plaza in Mingala Taungnyunt, this afternoon, attended by  Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Meeting Chairman of MRWA U Nyein made an opening speech on the occasion.

Then, Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone said that the State Peace and Development Council has  been making efforts for the emergence of a new, modern and developed nation, and in so doing, it laid  down and has been implementing economic aims and objectives from time to time in accord with the market-oriented system for the economic development of the State.

Agriculture, industrial and trade sectors are of great importance in striving for the development of the  State, and the agriculture sector is the most basic of these three sectors, he noted. Hence, one of the economic objectives which calls for "development of agriculture as the base and all round development  of other sectors of the economy as well" was firmly laid down and is being implemented, he said.

Efforts are being made in accord with the guidance of the State to archive food sufficiency for a
population of 60 million in 2010. he added and called on the wholesalers to make concerted efforts for  materialisation of the objectives of the association.

The State is endeavouring to bring down prices of rice and other basic commodities, as the regular flow  of commodities and bringing down and stabilising of commodity prices are of great importance, and duty has been assigned to the Working Committee for Ensuring Regular and Smooth Flow of
Commodities and the Bringing down and Stabilising of Commodity Prices.

The association is responsible for the regular flow of commodities and bringing down and stabilising of  commodity prices in the nation, and it is required to continue making its efforts to bring down price of  rice as well as local commodity prices as in the previous year, he stressed.

Afterwards, Ministers U Aung Thaung and U Soe Tha, Deputy Minister Col Thaik Tun, President of  UMFCCI U Win Myint extended greetings.

General-Secretary of MRWA U Aung Than Oo read the suggestions presented by the association
members.

The meeting ended with concluding remarks of Chairman U Nyein.

After the meeting, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo cordially met with those present at the meeting.

(5) Secretary-2 attends ordination, novitiation and ear-boring ceremony

YANGON, 18 March - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended  the ordination, novitiation and ear-boring ceremony of Yangon Mayor U Ko Lay and wife Daw Khin Khin and family at three-storey building of Thathanazeya Mingala Kyaungtaik in Tamway Township this morning.

Present also were Daw Khin Than Nwe, wife of Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council  Lt-Gen Tin Oo, ministers, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa and committee members, heads of department of  YCDC and their wives, guests and wellwishers and their relatives.

Thathanazeya Mingala Pariyatti Sarthintaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Panninda administered the Five Precepts.

Then, Daw Khin Than Nwe, well-wisher U Ko Lay and wife and officials presented offertories to
members of the Sangha.

Afterwards, Secretary of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru
Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Bhaddanta Kumara (Magway Sayadaw) delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.


(6) Auditor-General tours Sagaing Division and Chin State

YANGON, 18 March - Auditor-General Brig-Gen Tin Aye, together with Deputy Director-General U Kyin  Hun of the Office of the Auditor-General, Director U Kin Boi and officials, met with the staff of township auditors' offices in Kalay and Kalaywa and departmental employees of Kalaywa Township on 13 March.

The auditor-general gave instructions.

Then, he inspected Kalaywa Township Auditors' Office.

The auditor-general and party went to Tamu.

He met the employees of departments and the auditors' offices of Tamu District and Township in the
meeting hall of Tamu District Peace and Development Council on 14 March morning and the employees  of departments and auditors' offices in Tiddim and Tunzan, Chin State on 16 March morning.

(7) Applied Accounting and Management Course No 1 opens

YANGON, 18 March - Applied Accounting and Management Course No 1 jointly conducted by
Economic and Education Committee of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry and Myanmar Society of Accountants was opened in the training hall of the UMFCCI in Pabedan Township this evening.  Present on the occasion were Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, President of UMFCCI U Win Myint and members of the executive committee, Chairman of Myanmar Society Accountants U Ba Win, departmental officials, guests and trainees.

Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone made a speech.

President of UMFCCI U Win Myint, Chairman of MSA U Ba Win and Chairman of Economic and
Education Committee of UMFCCI U Sein Win Hlaing made speeches.

A total of 60 trainees are attending the course, which will last for five months.


(8) Minister inspects construction of Yenwe and Baingda Dams, Baingda Diversion Weir

YANGON, 18 March - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by Managing Director U Than Tun of Myanma Agriculture Services and officials, inspected Yenwe Dam. Construction Project being implemented by the Irrigation Department near Myochaung Village in Kyauktaga Township, Bago Division, yesterday afternoon.

Officials reported on the choosing of the axis of the embankment, soil conditions and the site
designated for construction of the dam capable of irrigating 118,500 acres of land.

The minister inspected preparations for construction of the diversion weir and discussed soil conditions and tasks to be done.

The minister inspected the 100 feet long tunnel under the place chosen for the axis of the embankment and the site for the axis of the embankment two miles away from the place previously designated for the project.

The minister and party arrived at Baingda Dam Construction Project being built on Baingda Creek 30 miles away from DaikU Township, and inspected preparations for the main embankment of Baingda Dam.

In the briefing hall, Director U Maung Maung of Construction-l of Irrigation Department reported on
location of Yenwe Dam and Baingda Dam construction projects and the benefits, flood prevention in the Pyundaza plain in monsoon and long-term benefits of the dams for development of .Sittoung Valley.

Then, the minister discussed geological condition and irrigated areas and gave instructions on
completion of the projects in time, durability, minimizing loss and wastage, health and welfare of staff.

Baingda Dam, 1,400 feet long and 122 feet high, has 373,900 acre/ft catchment area and 46,700 acres of irrigated area and 86,700 acres of cultivable land.

The Minster and party inspected the place where Baingda Diversion Weir Construction Project is to be implemented, 17 miles away from DaikU and 18 miles away from Baingda Dam.

Then, the minister inspected sand being taken out from Baingda Creek to be used in construction tasks of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation.

The Baingda Diversion Weir will be 300 feet long and 24 feet high.

(9) MNWCWA officials discuss development of women's affairs in Shan State (North)

YANGON, 18 March - Member of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and Secretary U Sit Myaing and members led by Vice-Chairperson Daw May May Yee arrived at Lashio Shan State (North), on 13 March .

They were welcomed by Daw Khin Saw Hnin, wife of the Chairman of the Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council and members of the council, the chairperson of Shan State Working Committee for Women's Affairs and members, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Fire Brigades and officials.

They met officials at Shweli Yeiktha of North-East Command Headquarters and discussed development of women' s affairs in the state.

On 14 March, a ceremony to explain the tasks of the MNWCWA was held at Town Hall in Lashio.Vice-Chairperson Daw May May Yee, members Professor Daw Khin Aye Win, Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Dr Daw Moe Moe Khaing, Daw Thein Thein Nyunt and Daw Yin Yin Lay explained matters related to their sectors.

The committees accepted K 1,050,000 donated by Shan State and District level Women ' s Affairs
Committees and entrepreneurs.

On 15 March, MNWCWA officials arrived at Muse and discussed the set-up of the committee and other functions of the committee. Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Professor Daw May May Yee and U Sit Myaing accepted K 498,000 donated by well-wishers.

They arrived at Lashio Day Care School No 1 and No 2 on 16 March and presented K 30,000 each to the schools. They then went to the education centre in Lashio and discussed matters related to education.


(10) Computer and laser printer donated to Ministry of Religious Affairs

YANGON, 18 March - The second donation of a set of computer and laser printer worth US$ 1,500 to the Ministry of Religious Affairs was held at the ministry at 2 pm today.

Present on the occasion were members of the Sangha led by Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Subhana (Susanli) of North Minsi Missionary Kyaung in Meisai, Thailand, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Director-General U San Lwin of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana, Director-General Dr Myo Myint of Religious Affairs Department, OSD at the ministry U Thet Shay, Pro-Rector (Admin) of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University Dr Hla Pe, Head of Office U Maung Maung Myint and officials.

Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Subhana (Susanli) presented a set of computer and laser printer to the minister who presented a certificate of honour to the Sayadaw and expressed thanks.

(11) Rice donation ceremony at Shwedagon Pagoda Buddha Pujaniya held

YANGON, 1 8 March - The rice donation ceremony of the 2,588th Buddha Pujaniya of Shwedagon Pagoda sponsored by  Shwedagon Pagoda Board of Trustees was held on the Pagoda platform at 4.30 pm today.

Present were Ovadacariya Sayadaws of the Pagoda Agga Maha Pandita Sayadaws, Chairman of Yangon Division Sangha Nayaka Committee and members of the Sangha, members of Bahan and Dagon Townships Sangha Nayaka Committees, 81 members of the Sangha, 27 nuns, members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees and wellwishers and guests.

A total of K 6 million including K 2.2 million donated by Pagoda Board of Trustees and K 3.8 million by wellwishers were offered to 108 members of the Sangha and nuns.


 (12) Over 58,000 eligible voters of Magway submit petitions expressing no confidence in   NLD representative-elect U Aung Soe

YANGON, 18 March - Over 58,000 eligible voters of Magway Township Constituency-2, Magway Division, submitted signed petitions expressing no confidence in U Aung Soe elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Magway Township Constituency-2 and no support for him at the rallies held in Migyaungye and Thityagauk villages in Magway Township on 21 January 2()00 morning.

A total of 4,500 local people of eight village-tracts attended the rally in Migyaungye Village.

On behalf of voters, farmer U Soe Hlaing of Kandaw Village expressed no confidence in U Aung Soe of National League for  Democracy and no support for him. Afterwards, farmer U Tha Sein of Thabutkyaw Village, on behalf of all voters, presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Aung Soe of National League for Democracy and no support for him signed by voters to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Township 'Education Officer U Kyaw Lwin.

Similarly, 6,000 local people of 11 village-tracts attended the rally in Thityagauk Village.

On behalf of voters, farmer U Soe Than of Wetlusan Village expressed no confidence in U Aung Soe of National League for Democracy and no support for him. Then, farmer U Kyi Aye of Asasan Village, on behalf of all voters, presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Aung Soe of National League for Democracy and no support for him signed by voters to Member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Township Justice U Han Tin.

Out of 46,892 eligible voters in Magway Township Constituency-2, 34,012 or 72.53 per cent voted for U Aung Soe of NLD in 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election.

The number of voters who presented signed petitions of no confidence in U Aung Soe totalled 58,517 or 124.74 percent.

(13) 23 Pyay NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 18 March - Twenty-three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pyay Township, Bago Division..

Twenty-three members of Pyay Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by
sending letters of resignation to Pyay Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-
commission Office and the party concerned on 22 October 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
