(1) Chief of Staff (Army) inspects camp, drill practising of Nawadei Column
YANGON, 13 March - Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected the camp of Nawadei Column which will participate in the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Parade, at Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Headquarters this morning.Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo arrived at the camp of Nawadei Column in Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Headquarters at 7.30 am.
In the office of the Nawadei Column Commander, the Chief of Staff (Army) heard reports on matters related to Nawadei Column, strength of the column and drill by Acting Commander of Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Captain Than Hsan (Navy) and Column Commander Captain Maung Maung Thit (Navy) and attended to their needs.
Then, the Chief of Staff (Army) inspected messes and welfare shops for parade columns.
Afterwards, the Chief of Staff (Army) took the salute of companies of Nawadei Column which are practising the drill at the parade ground of Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Headquarters and gave necessary instructions.
(2) Secretary-2 looks into implementation of instructions given during tour of Kachin State and Sagaing Division
YANGON, 13 March - A coordination meeting on implementation of instructions given during the tour of Kachin State and Sagaing Division, was held in the meeting hall of Public Works Head (Office) on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo. The Secretary-2 added that requirements have been coordinated and fulfilled for the improvement of transport, the boosting of agricultural production, education and health matters.
He spoke of the need for departments concerned to carryout respective tasks, and said that only coordination and rapid implementation of instructions can make for development of the regions which lagged behind in progress.
Deputy Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office U Zaw Myint Pe reported on tasks coordinated during the tour and tasks to be done by respective ministries.
The ministers, the deputy ministers and the heads of departments reported on the tasks to be carried out.
Then, the Secretary-2 gave instructions on carrying out the tasks, conducting tours right down to the grass- roots level and submitting progress reports.
(3) Central Supervisory Committee on Communication Policy meets
YANGON, 13 March - Central Supervisory Committee on Communication Policy held its 11th meeting at the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
Joint Secretary of the Central Supervisory Committee General Staff Officer (Grade I) of Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) Lt-Col Hla Thein Swe reported on minutes of the previous meeting, resolutions and implementation of the programme.
Joint Secretary of the Central Supervisory Committee Staff Officer (Grade I) of Directorate of Signals Lt-Col Ye Lwin reported on matters of communication equipment by departments and organizations and resolutions.
Minister Brig-Gen Win Tin reported on arrangements for better telephone communications between Yangon and Mandalay, installation at E-mail, telephone exchange in Moebye and arrangements for Moebye telecommunications, arrangements for installation of auto telephone exchange in Muse, Namhkam and Kutkai Townships and installation of 1,000 auto. telephone lines in Yadanabon Market in Mandalay.
Commodore Kyi Min and Director Brig-Gen Aung Myint took part in the discussions. Chairman of Central Supervisory Committee Lt-Gen Tin Oo gave instructions on work.

(4) Work coordination meeting of bank managers on annual budget of Myanma Economic Bank
YANGON, 13 March - A work coordination meeting on annual budget for 1999-2000 of bank managers of Myanma Economic Bank under the Ministry of Finance and Revenue was held at the Branch-1 of MEB on Pansodan Street, here, at 9 am today.
In his address, Minister U Khin Maung Thein said that market-oriented economic system is being implemented as the Government has been making efforts for emergence of a new, modern and developed nation. Accordingly, the role of banks is on the increase as a result of improvements in financial services and business in the country, he noted. In addition to State-run banks, 20 private banks have already opened their branches up to 160 nationwide and are effectively providing monetary services, he said.
The MEB is more crucial as it is extending banking services of border trade and State-owned business in accord with the State's policies and with the rapid improvement of banking services in the entire nation, bank staff members are to exert their efforts in accord with the public needs, he reiterated. He urged the bank staff members to make concerted effort in development of banking services through co-ordination in this meeting.
Then, Governor of the Central Bank U Kyaw Kyaw Maung spoke, followed by a general round of discussion.
The co-ordination meeting continues tomorrow.
(5) Minister inspects hostels of Aung San parade column
YANGON, 13 March - Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa this afternoon visited the Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute on Shwedagon Pagoda Road and inspected the Booths of Social Objectives, Nation building endeavours and the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement. He later inspected the hostels in the Kyaikkasan Grounds of Aung San parade column of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Parade Aung San column comprises two Fire Brigades.
(6) Three communications courses opened
YANGON, 13 March - Cable Installation and Maintenance Course, Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy and Synchronous Digital Hierarchy Course and Overseer/ Reader curse were opened this morning at Post and Telecommunications Service Training School, with an address by Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin.
He spoke of the need .o conduct courses continuously to fulfil the requirements of the practical fields.
He said all citizens are building a peaceful, modern, developed nation and urged the trainees to serve the country with the use of their professions.

(7) Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee arrives back
YANGON, 13 March - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint arrived back here by air this afternoon after attending the SEAGF Council Meeting and the Seminar on SEA Games in the New Millennium in KualaLumpur, Malaysia, on 10 and 11 March.
Members of the delegation Secretary of MOC Deputy Director U Khin Maung Lwin and Deputy Director U Tin Win of Sports and Physical Education Department also arrived back on the same flight.
(8) Minister inspects 37th Myanma Gems Emporium
YANGON, 13 March - Patron of 37th Myanma Gems Emporium Central Committee Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint accompanied by Chairman of the Central Committee Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint in inspected 37th Myanma Gems Emporium at Myanma Gems Emporium Kaba Aye Pagoda Road morning.
The Minister inspected pure jade, jade for jewellery, and uncut jade lots, modern jewellery produced by Myanmar VES Joint Venture Co Ltd, fixed price gems, polished jade, jewellery, jade figurines and jade carvings produced by Myanma Gems Enterprise, private shops and gem-painting shops and he cordially greeted local and foreign merchants who were inspecting gems.
There are totally 539 gem merchants-403 from 200 foreign companies and 136 from 65 local companies here to attend the Emporium. The gem merchants inspected gems today. Jade lots will be sold by competitive bidding and tender from 9 am to 5 pm on 14 March.
(9) Work coordinated to hold religious title presentation ceremony and provisions donation ceremony
YANGON, 13 March - A coordination meeting for holding the religious title presentation ceremony and provisions donation ceremony was held in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Religious Affairs this morning.
Minister U Aung Khin gave instructions for the success of the ceremony to be held on 19 March.
Responsible officials of the committees reported on arrangements for the ceremony.
Then, a general round of discussions followed.
The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the Minister.

(10) 1.9 million stimulant tablets and 100 kilos of chemical powder seized in Hpa-an
YANGON, 13 March - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Tatmadaw members seized Toyota Corolla Van (white) with number plates 8 Ka/5749 and Nissan Canter Truck with number plates 2 Kha/6919 left by runaway drug traffickers, together with 1,988,000 WY brand pink stimulant tablets and 100 kilos of ownerless Hydrochloride chemical powder near the Waboo Taw checkpoint, Hpa-an, Kayin State.
Thet arrested Sai Gi Hong (a) Sai Tun, son of U Lone Ta, No 118 74th Street between 36 and 37 Streets, Mandalay, Tun Sein (a) Thein Maung, son of U Ba Hla, Thibaw, Sai Shwe Lu (a) Sai Lu and Hla Maung (a) Aik Hla son of U Pu Nya, Sai San Myint (a) San Myint Htwe, son of U Maung Shwe, Aik Ti (a) Sai Myo Hline, son of U Kyaw Aung in connection with the case after combing the area.
Action is being taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
(11) 33 members resign from Monyo NLD of own accord
YANGON, 13 March - Thirty-three members resigned of their own accord from the National League for Democracy of Monyo Township, Bago Division.
Thirty-three members of Monyo Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 13 October 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
