(1) Secretary-2 inspects agriculture and livestock breeding of battalion in Yankin Township
 
YANGON, 12 March - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected agriculture and livestock breeding work of the battalion in Yankin Township today.

Acting Commanding Officer Maj Soe Lwin and officers reported on matters related to the farm.  The Secretary-2 inspected the growing of flowers by families at the battalion, breeding of the poultry by Warrant Officer (II) Thet Swe and breeding of goats and fish by the battalion.

Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party inspected the breeding of milk cows by a family, the growing of flowers and production of plastic baskets.

Then, the Secretary-2 met wife of the commander Daw Maw Maw Nyunt, Acting Commander Maj Soe Lwin and officers and their families.

He said that the Government is providing.assistance for development of the agriculture sector, and instructions have been sent to regiments and battalions to carry out agricultural and livestock breeding work.
 
Acting Commander Maj-Gen Soe Lwin reported on cultivation of monsoon and summer paddy, the poultry farm jointly run by the battalion and CP Company and the growing of flowers and live stock breeding of families, and the wife of the acting commander on maternal and child welfare activities, welfare-work and assistance provided for uplift of education standard.

Next, the Secretary-2 gave instructions on cultivation of flowers and kitchen crops, agriculture and livestock breeding of the unit and battalion and welfare work.
 
The Secretary-2 also inspected No 7 Basic Education Middle School in Yankin Township, and gave instructions.


(2) Chief of Staff (Army) inspects parade drill
 
YANGON, 12 March - Chairman of the Leading Committee for Observance of the 55th Anniversary of Armed Forces Day Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected the parade columns, which will participate in the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Parade, at the Resistance Park this morning.

Lt-Gen Tin Oo arrived at the Resistance Park at 9 am, and together with Chairman of Parade Working Committee Chief of Armed Forces Training , Deputy Adjutant-General , Commandant of Defence Services Army Officer Training School and military officers (Army, Navy and Air), inspected the parade columns led by Parade Commander.

He gave necessary instructions.

Anawrahta, Kyansittha, Bayintnaung, Nawadae, Aung Zeya, Hsinbyushin, Bandoola, Myawady and Aung San columns participated in the drill.
 


(3)Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) families and well-wishers donate rice and cash to School for the Blind

YANGON, 12 March - Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) families and well-wishers made donations to the School for the Blind of Social Welfare Department of Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement on Panbingyi Road in Kyimyindine Township this morning.

Principal Daw Khin Sein Cho reported on the history of the school and academic matters.
 
Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than Nwe and family presented K 5,000 to Principal Daw Khin Sein Cho.

Chief of Staff (Navy) Commodore Kyi Min, Camp Commandant of the Ministry of Defence Brig-Gen Hla Aung Thein and General Staff Officer (Grade I) (Air) Lt-Col Ye Chit Pe handed over rice for the school.

Commodore Kyi Min reported on objective of the donations.

Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa reported on work done of schools under Social Welfare Department including the School for the Blind and Director-General of SWD U Sit Myaing requirements of the School for the Blind.

The Secretary-2 fulfilled the requirements.

(4) Minister inspects construction of factories in Magway Division
 
YANGON, 12 March - Member of Central Executive Committee of Union Solidarity and Development Association Minister for Industry- l U Aung Thaung arrived at Basic Education Primary School at Amyaungkan Village in Kyaukpadaung Township, Mandalay Division, yesterday.

Minister U Aung Thaung drove a stake for the construction of building of Basic Education Middle School and sprinkled scented water onto it.

Then, CEC member U Aung Thaung attended the ceremony to submit USDA membership applications at tine school.

Chairman of Amyaungkan Village Peace and Development Council U Ngwe Paw and Organizer U Tun Tin presented 2,525 membership applications to Secretary of Township USDA U Aung Win Kyi.

Afterwards, the cash donation ceremony for the construction of the BEMS building was held there.

Minister U Aung Thaung gave instructions to officials on current political, economic and social affairs.
 
Chairman of Myanma Industrial Development Committee Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung together with Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw met industrialists at Yenanchaung Industrial Zone. The industrialists reported to the minister on their requirements. Minister U Aung Thaung attended to their needs.

The minister and party inspected personal goods, vehicles and machine tool of industrialists and Producer Cooperative Society.

Minister U Aung Thaung and Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw arrived at Dying Factory and inspected the functions of the factory The minister attended to their needs.

In the afternoon, Minister U Aung Thaung and party heared reports on construction of Soft Drink Factory (Magway), Soap Factory (Magway) and Plastics Factory (Magway), installation of machines and construction of buildings and roads presented by Managing Director of Myanma General and Maintenance Industries U Thaik Tun and officials. The minister gave instructions to them.

Then, U Aung Thaung inspected sample of bottle at the Soft Drink Factory.

The minister also inspected installation of machines and construction of the factory and tank.


(5) Minister inspects carving of alabaster Buddha image in Madaya Township
 
YANGON, 1 2 March - Minister for Culture U Win Sein inspected the carving of alabaster Buddha image in Sakyin Village, Madaya Township, Mandalay Division, on 11 March.

The image is 19' 9" high and weighs 84 tons and it will be conveyed to Singapore by Singapore Shwekyaung Sayadaw. The image is being carved by U Taw Taw according to Yadanabon period design.

The minister also inspected the alabaster stone which is to be carved into Kyauktawgyi Buddha image. The stone is 34' long and 23' wide and 13' high.
 
Charman of Madaya Township Peace and Development Council U Aung Myint reported on findings of the stone and the route to be conveyed.

The minister and party went to the route through which Kyauktawgyi Maha Thekkyamarazein Buddha image was conveyed.

U Taw Taw reported on thc route of conveyance. The minister gave instructions on stone inscription of Kyauktawgyi and inspected renovation of Eihtakayama Yawmingyi Kyaungtaik and Thingaza Wooden Kyaungdawgyi.


(6) Commander inspects development tasks in Yangon South District
 
YANGON, 12 March - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, accompanied by Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, Chairman of Yangon South District Peace and Development Council and division-level departmental officials, inspected regional development:tasks and met local farmers and departmental officials in Kungyangon and Kawhmu townships, Yangon South District, this morning.

Superintending Engineer of Yangon Division Public Works U Soe Nyunt and District Senior Engineer U Myo Myint reported on the upgrading of roads in the townships in the western part of Yangon South District.

The commander gave instructions on the building of Dalla-Kawhmu-Kungyangon Motor Road. and called on local administrative bodies and authorities to provide necessary assistance.

This road, 38.7 miles long, stretches from Dalla to Ingapu, including 9-mile-long Dalla-Kanpe section, 16.4-mile-long Kanpe-Kawhmu section and 13.3-mile-long Kawhmu-Kungyangon- Ingapu section.

In meeting with village and ward authorities and farmers, the commander said that with regard to agriculture, reliance can be placed on Yangon South District, and added that summer paddy has been cultivated on 26,392 acres in Twantay Township, on 15,898 acres in Kawhmu Township and on 28,089 acres in Kungyangon Township.

The Irrigation Department has built canals in flood-prone  areas of Twantay, Kawhmu and Kungyangon Townships. Summer paddy was cultivated 4 on 1,300 acres last year, and in this year, over 13, 000 acres have been placed under summer paddy. Continued efforts are being made to dig Canal No 2, and the construction of the sluice gate in Kungyangon Township will be completed this year with the result that a total of 30,000 acres can be placed under summer paddy in coming summer paddy cultivation season.

The commander also gave instructions on the use of new paddy strains and EM Bokashi. fertilizer and regional development and security.

Deputy Minister U Ohn Myint explained construction of Kungyangon sluice gate, Htani sluice gate, Htipyugon sluice gate and Moemakha sluice gate and agricultural matters.

The chairmen of Township Peace and Development Councils reported on agricultural work and measures taken for development of respective townships.

The commander gave instructions on the boosting of per-acre yield, systematic use of fertilizer, regional development tasks, security matters and fire prevention measures.

The commander also met with secretariat members of Yangon South District and Township USDAs and attended to their needs.

Afterwards, the commander inspected the model paddy field in Kamapa Village, Kungyangon Township, and summer paddy field of U Kyauk Doe.
 
Next, the commander and party proceeded to Kungyangon Sluice gate Project being undertaken by the Irrigation Department.

The commander gave instructions on construction of the sluice gate.

Construction of Kungyangon Sluice gate began in December 1999 and will be completed in May, Year 2000.

It is of reinforced concrete type and can irrigate 21,400 acres in the region.  Then, the commander and party inspected construction of the sluice gate.  Later, the commander inspected the 20-acre summer paddy fields of Kungyangon Township General Administration Department.

Next, the commander went to the construction. project of Ayeyawady Bridge (Daedaye)which will link Ingapu Village in Kungyangon Township, Yangon Division, and Dedaye in Ayeyawady Division. Superintending Engineer of Public Works U Soe Nyunt reported on the project. Ayeyawady Bridge (Dedaye) is 3,503 feet long, and its main structure is 1,423 feet long and the approach structure 2,080 feet long. It has a 28-feet-wide two-lane motor road.

Upon completion of the bridge, the people from Pyapon, Kyaiklat and Dedaye Townships in Ayeyawady Division can reach Yangon through Kungyangon Township in a short time.


(7) Commander inspects Seikphutaung Diversion Weir in Toungoo
 
YANGON, 12 March - Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, accompanied by Deputy Commander of Southern Command and officials, arrived at Seikphutaung Diversion Weir in Toungoo Township yesterday afternoon.

Officials reported to the commander on water supply from Pathi Dam to Seikphutaung Diversion Weir, from Seikphutaung Diversion Weir to summer paddy cultivation lands of surrounding villages and cultivation of 1,206 acres of summer paddy.

Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye gave instructions to officials on drainage of water, promotion of irrigated farm land, boosting agriculture production.

Then, the commander inspected summer paddy plantation. Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye went to Basic Education Primary School in Ngwehlan/Ohgon Ward 18 in Toungoo and inspected construction of two-storey new building and preparations of classrooms at the school.

The Commander attended to their needs.

(8) Assistant High Commissioner of UNHCR arrives

YANGON, 12 March - Assistant High Commissioner of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Office in Geneva Mr Soren Jessen Petersen and two members arrived here by air this morning.

They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for Immigration and Population U Maung Aung, Director-General of Immigration and National Registration Department Col Maung Htay, Resident Representative of UNHCR Mr Canh Nguyen Tang, Planning Manager U Aye and officials.


(9) 406 gem merchants arrive for Myanma Gems Emporium
 
YANGON, 12 March - A total of 406 gem merchants 300 from seven countries and 140 companies and 106 from local companies arrived here today to attend the 37th Myanma Gems Emporium being held at Myanma Gems Mart on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road.

The gem merchants viewed gems and jewellery on display at the emporium from 9 am to5 pm.

They were briefed by Managing Director U Khin Oo of Myanmar Gems Enterprise and Secretary of Jade, Gems and Pearl Sub-Committee.

More gems merchants will continue to arrive on 13 March and view the items at the emporium.

(10) 36,646 eligible voters of Yinmabin submit petitions expressing no confidence in NLD representative-elect U Tin Tun Aung
 
YANGON, 12 March - A total of 36,646 eligible voters of Yinmabin Township Constituency-2, Sagaing Division, submitted signed declarations expressing no confidence in U Tin Tun Aung elected as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy in the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Yinmabin Township Constituency-2 and no support for him at the rallies held in Myoma Sports Ground, Yinpaungtaing Village and Tawa Village of the township on 20 December 1999 morning.

A total of 6,567 local people of Ward Kagyi, Klard Gagyi, Minkangyi, Nyaung-bingyi and Konywa village-tracts rallied at Myoma Sports Ground.

Farmer U Tu, on behalf of the voters, expressed no confidence in U Tin Tun Aung of National League for Democracy and no support for him. Then, service personnel of Ministry of Commerce (Retired) U Paw presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Tin Tun Aung and no support for him signed by voters to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Khin Maung Maung.

Altogether 3,856 local people of Yinpaungtaing, Zetaw, Labo, Sinzwe, Let kapya, Mauklok, Innywa and Sinde villages rallied in Yinpaungtaing Village.

Merchant U Kyaw Tun Aung, on behalf of the voters. expressed no confidence in U Tin Tun Aung of National League for Democracy and no support for him. Then, farmer U Shwe presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Tin Tun Aung and no support for him signed by voters to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Myint Than.

Altogether 5,118 local people of Tawa, Sailya, Nyaungkal, Thaminthat, Kathikon, Kapaingkyat and Wayon villages rallied in Tawa Village.

Farmer U Khin Maung Htay on behalf of the voters, expressed no confidence in U Tin Tun Aung of National League for Democracy and support for him. Then, farmer U Nyein Aung presented declarations expressing no confidence in U Tin Tun Aung and no support for him signed by voters to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Khin Maung Tin.

Out of 29,932 eligible voters of Yinmabin Township Constituency-2, 15,343 or 51.25 per cent voted for U Tin Tun Aung of NLD in 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election.

The number of voters who presented signed petitions of no confidence in U Tin Tun Aung totalled 36,646 or 94.87 per cent.


(11) 30 Ye NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 12 March - Thirty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ye Township, Mon State.

Thirty members of Ye Township NLD, Mon State, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Ye Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Office and the party concerned on 11 November, 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
