(1) Seven motor vehicles donated to Office of Strategic Studies

YANGON, 8 March - Under the patronage of mother Daw Yin Yin May, son Dr Tha Yin Myat-Daw Nwe Nwe Aye and family of 192, Ingyinmyaing Road in Thuwunna, Thingangyun Township, in memory of the father Major Tha Din Gyi who passed away five years ago, donated two Ford Explorer (4x4), two 12-passenger capacity Mitsubishi L-300s and three Mitsubishi Panal vans totalling seven vehicles worth US$ 140,000 to the Office of Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Defence at the Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road this morning.

Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies and Director of Defence Services Intelligence Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt accepted the donations.

Then, the Secretary-1 inspected the vehicles.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies and Deputy Director of Defence Services Intelligence Maj-Gen Kyaw Win and officials.


(2) Minister inspects production of Personal Goods Factory

YANGON, 8 March - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, accompanied by officials, arrived at Personal Goods Factory of Myanma Pharmaceutical Industries in Ward 29, Thuwunna, Thingangyun Township, this morning, and inspected the factory and gave instructions.

Then, the minister and party inspected production process of VS Pepsodent and gave instructions on boosting production and distribution as import substitute product.

Afterwards, the minister and party inspected production of Thinn powder and quality control of the products. The minister gave instructions on innovation and arrangements for manufacturing quality products through combination of machine power, manpower and .management.

In the briefing hall, the minister met officials and gave instructions on policies of the ministry and exceeding the target before the end of 1999-2000 fiscal year.

(3) Ministerr for Industry- l meets Commercial Director of PT. Schoot lgar Glass

YANGON, 8 March - Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung met Commercial Director Mr R Gunawan Setokusumo of German firm PT. Schott Igar Glass based in Indonesia and party at his office at 11 a n today.

Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung was briefed on Schott Igar Glass production with the use of slides.


(4) Basic computer course No 2/2000 for Cooperative officers

YANGON, 8 March - Basic computer course No 2/2000 for officials of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Cooperatives opened at the Ministry of Cooperatives this afternoon, with an address by Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San.

Minister U Aung San said now is information technology age and computer is needed in every business for carrying out the tasks rapidly and spoke of the need for service personnel to be proficient in computer technology to keep abreast with international community. The course is a part of human resources development process, he said.

The four-week course is being attended by 24 trainee officers of Cooperative Department, Cottage Industries Department, Cooperative Export and Import Enterprise and Yangon Division Cooperative Department.

(5)  Minister meets Ambassador of ROK

YANGON, 8 March - Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing met Ambassador of Republic of Korea Mr Chung Jung-gum at his office this morning.


(6) Commander inspects agriculture works in Pantanaw, Nyaungdon Townships

YANGON, 8 March - Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, accompanied by officials, inspected cultivation of summer paddy and construction of road in Mogok-Dedok (North) wetland areas in Pantanaw Township, implemented by Olympic, First Top and Shwe Thanlwin Companies, on 3 March morning.

Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann looked into the requirements.

At the briefing hall of Irrigation Department, Director of Irrigation Department U Khin Zaw and Chairman of Maubin District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Thein Hlaing and officials reported to the Commander on their work.

The Commander gave instructions to them.

The Commander then inspected the paving of road linking Yangon-Pathein Road and Minkhayu Village, construction of Dawwa Sluice Gate and reconstruction of Awainat Dam.

In the afternoon, Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann and party went to Bawathit Agricultural Camp No 3 of Ministry of Home Affairs in Nyaungdonkyun, Nyaungdon Township.

Camp Manager U Sann Htoo reported to the commander on their functions.

The Commander gave suggestions to officials and inspected cultivation of 100 acres of summer paddy in Maubin Township.


(7) Commander inspects renovation of canal in Yankintaung Village, Mandalay

YANGON, 8 March - Members of Mandalay Division Union Solidarity and Development Association
collectively renovated the irrigation canal in Yankintaung Village-Tract in Patheingyi Township on 6 March.

The ceremony was attended by Patron of Mandalay Division USDA Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Chairman of Mandalay City Development Committee Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein, Secretary of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council and officials, members of Division Agricultural Supervisory Committee, Secretary of Mandalay Division USDA and EC members, members of USDA in Patheingyi, Maha Aungmye, Chanayethazan, Aungmyethazan, Chanmyathazi, Pyigyitagun and Amarapura Townships and local
farmers.

The commander and party visited renovation of canal and land preparation.

The canal is 8,000 feet long, five feet wide and five feet deep and it is for cultivation of 668 acres.

(8) Yangon Mayor inspects preparations for construction of Myanmar International  Centre

YANGON, 8 March - Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor of Yangon U Ko Lay this morning inspected the land survey, levelling and preparatory work for the construction of Myanmar International Centre to be undertaken by the YCDC Engineering Department (Buildings) at the comer of Min Dhamma Road and Tawwun Road in Mayangon Township.

After hearing reports on the project, U Ko Lay told the responsible personnel to try to complete the project according to schedule and use machinery effectively in land preparation .

The centre will be built on the 70-acre area. On completion, the centre will be used for hosting national and international exhibitions and international conferences. There will be hotels and restaurants plus .

multi-purpose hall and a wide area of parking lots for 2,000 cars. It is the first ever world class facility to be built in the country.


(9) First shipment of buckwheat heads for Japan

YANGON, 8 March - The first shipment of buckwheat cultivated in formerly opium growing areas in northern Shan State as opium substitute crop headed for Japan today.

Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading of the Ministry of Commerce exported the crop on board mv Magway which left for Yokohama at 12.35 pm.


(10)13,800 stimulant tablets seized in Mongshu

 YANGON, 8 March - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, while waiting at No 5 region of Konmyinttha Ward, Mongshu Gems Land, Mongshu, Shan State (South), on 23 February, seized drug traffickers U Kyaw Shwe's son Win Maung Oo, U Myauk Hsam's son Myauk Kyin Hsan, U Ar Hsan's son Ar Khan of No 5 region, Konmyinttha Ward, Mongshu, and U Si Te Kyin's son Phone Kyaw of Aungthaya region of Wankan Ward, Mongshu, together with WY brand 13,800 stimulant tab- lets kept in 69 packets. Action is taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(11) 38 Letpadan Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 8 March - Thirty eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Letpadan Township, Bago Division.

Thirty eight members of Letpadan Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Letpadan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 15 December 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
