(1)Government bodies urged to steer national economy to development trend Secretary-1meets officials of Ministry of Commerce

YANGON, 29 Feb - The Ministry of Commerce held third four-monthly coordination meeting for 1999 at the meeting hall of the ministry on Strand Road, this morning, with an address by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

First, Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone reported to the Secretary-l on basic trade policy and aims, set-up of the ministry, formation and implementation of departments and enterprises, accomplishment of the ministry, paddy purchasing, export and import tasks, border trade and staff welfare activity.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt delivered an address.

The Secretary-l said it is known to all that the Slate Peace and Development Council is putting extra efforts for progress of the national economy with greater momentum in enabling the entire people to enjoy fully the basic human rights concerning food, clothing and shelter conditions with peace of mind.

The government is paying serious attention to the national economic progress with the national outlook while upholding the attitude that the socio-economic life of the people will improve together with the national stability and progress only if there is national economic development. The destructive elements under the guise of politicians are launching perpetration to cause economic hardships and instability and loss of national peace and tranquillity at a time when the entire nation is making efforts with the leadership of the government for rapid national progress.

All the people should strive from their respective sectors to uplift the national economic life upholding in mind the national essence. It is specially required for the government bodies to steer the national economic trend to the correct path when the new economic system has not emerged totally yet.

Efforts should be made to boost foreign trade and investment in line with the adopted new economic system and for the firmness and flourishing of the private enterprises of the nationalities in accord with the law.

The harmonious development of the State sector and the private sector in the course of straight and developing the national economy is the policy of the government.

Endeavours should be made for emergence of a powerful and fast growing national economic force by combining the advantages of the private sector such as effective administration, work potency, maneuverability of capital and the edges of the government sector such as financial stability, systematic management and the ability to render supervision in accord with the rules and regulations.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged them to effectively render assistance from the economic sector for emergence of a peaceful, loped nation; to make strenuous efforts for flourishing of trade and economy to develop national economy and living standards of the people; to strive to develop the services of the ministry which is the main pillar in boosting the nation's foreign exchange earnings; to strive to broaden the international trade operations; and to make efforts with national outlook for the national economic progress in enabling the Union of Myanmar to get nations and to work for her own future.

(2)Secretary-l attends coordination meeting to pay homage to Myingyan Koehsaungtaik  Sayadaw for 90th birthday 

YANGON, 29 Feb - A coordination meeting to pay homage to Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Myingyan Koehsaungtaik Presiding Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajctika Bhaddanta Sobhita for his 90th birthday was held at Wizaya Mingala Dhamma Thabin on Kaba Aye Hill this afternoon, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-1 said work is under way for holding of birthday of the Sayadaw after formation of various committees and the ceremony will be held at Five Nikaya Pitakat Thonbon Sarthintaik in Dagon (South) Township for three days. He said Leading Committee, Work Committee and Sub-Committees are to undertake measures for Sayadaw's birthday according to the schedule and officials are to report work done and to be done.

Next, Chairman of Leading Committee and Work Committee Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin reported on arrangements for holding of birthday of the Sayadaw Chairmen and officials of Sub-Committees reported on arrangements and tasks to be undertaken. The Secretary-1 took part in the discussions.

After the meeting, the Secretary-1 and party went to Maha Pasana Cave and discussed cleaning of environs 5 of the cave.

The Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Mawgun Museum to mark the Sixth Synod and inspected documentary photo of the opening of the Sixth Synod, statues and photos of Sayadaws, paintings describing the openings of Synods from the first to fourth and articles used at the opening of the Sixth Synod.


(3)Soon' offering to Sayadaws and title recipient Sayadaws discussed

YANGON, 29 Feb - A meeting to coordinate offering of 'soon' to Sayadaws and title recipient Sayadaws who will attend the year 2000 religious title presentation ceremony this afternoon at Tatmadaw Dhammayon, with an address by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Secretary of the Work Committee to Offer Soon to Sayadaws Deputy-Quarter-Master-General Col Zaw Lin reported to the meeting on arrangements being made to offer soon.

Chairmen of the respective subcommittees and officials presented sectorwise accomplishments.

After giving suggestions, the Secretary-1 gave the concluding address.

(4)Secretary-2 inspects construction of Thandaunggyi resort in Thandaung Township

YANGON, 29 Feb - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected construction of Thandaunggyi resort in Thandaung Township, Paunglaung Hydroelectric power project and multi-purpose dam project in Pyinmana Township today.

The Secretary-2 accompanied by Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint, officials and national entrepreneurs, left here this morning for Thandaunggyi region in Thandaung Township by helicopter.

The Secretary-2 and party were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Brig- Gen Win Myint and Brig-Gen Thein Swe of Thandaung Station, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Thura Maung Ni and officials.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected construction of roads with the use of heavy machinery and land preparation for construction of the resort in Thandaunggyi region.
 
The Secretary-2 and party inspected construction of the rest-house and beauty of the environs of Thandaunggyi region.

He said Pathi Creek Reservoir has been built and Thaukyaykhat hydel power project is now under way and he urged national entrepreneurs to participate in the project for recreation business.

The Secretary-2 and party went to Paunglaung Hydroelectric power project in Pyinmana Township where they were welcomed by Tactical Operations Commander of Central Command Col Tun Kyi, Chairman of Yamethin Township Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Htay Aung and officials.

Project Director U Wan Kyi reported on diversion tunnels and construction of underground power stations. Director U Win Maung of Construction-5 of Irrigation Department on construction of earth dams, spill ways, embankments and progress of the project.

Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut reported on making efforts for early completion of the project.

Chairman of supervisory and implementation committee Brig-Gen Thein Swe also reported on cooperation of respective departments.

Chairman of Leading Committee for Paunglaung Hydro electric power project Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said he came to inspect implementation and fulfil the requirements and officials usually gave instructions on earl completion of the project.

If the project is complete one day earlier, people can enjoy the benefit of the project sooner.

He called for early completion of the project.

The Secretary-2 presented fruit basket to experts of Sanyu consultant group of Japan and YMEC Co Ltd of the People's Republic of China.

The Secretary-2 and Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut presented gifts to officials and service personnel of Construction-5 of Irrigation Department.
 
The Secretary-2 and party inspected construction site of spill ways and had photo taken.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected construction of approach tunnels and main dam and met service personnel.

On completion of the project, Paunglaung Multi-purpose dam can irrigate farmlands.

They arrived back here in the evening.

(5)Minister inspects Hlinedat Canning Factory, diversion weir and dams 

YANGON, 29 Feb - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by departmental officials and members of Mandalay Division Agriculture Coordination Committee, arrived at Hlinedat Canning Factory in Thazi yesterday.

Managing Director U Tun Than of Myanma Agriculture Service and the factory manager reported on raw materials, production and distribution of the factory.

The minister gave instructions on work and inspected production process.

The factory produces jam, cordial, concentrate and syrup made from fruits, mixed and dehydrate vegetable.

At Hlinedat Central Agricultural Farm, officials reported on modem water supply system and water dropping supply system being under- taken by MAS and Netafim Co Ltd of Israel and cultivation of cotton by the water dropping supply system.

The minister inspected modern water supply systems, cultivation of crops and water supply of Utilization of Water Resources Department.

In the afternoon. the minister inspected construction of Thittatgon Diversion Weir near Thittatgon Village in Myittha Township. Acting Managing Director U Kyaw San Win of Irrigation Department and officials con- ducted the minister round the reservoir.

Then, the minister and party inspected tasks of Zeedaw Dam Construction Project near Hsadaung Village in Natogyi Township. The dam will irrigate 4,000 acres of land to grow paddy and double cropping.

(6)Minister inspects Wundwin Textile Mill, Paleik Newsprint Mill

YANGON, 29 Feb - Member of Central Executive Committee of Union Solidarity and Development Association Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met executives and organizers of Meiktila and Yamethin District and Thazi, Mahlaing and Wundwin Township USDAs at Meiktila District USDA Office yesterday.

The minister then met departmental heads at Wundwin Textile Factory and discussed tasks to be done. He inspected production of the factory.

The USDA CEC member inspected Singaing Township USDA office and attended to the needs of USDA members.

Afterwards, the minister inspected 25-ton Paleik Newsprint Mill Construction Project in the compound of Paleik Textile and Finishing Plant in Singaing.

The minister also inspected production of Bandage Factory, the branch of Paleik Textile and Finishing Plant.   In the evening, the USDA CEC member presented modern teaching aids and school equipment to Mahaaungmye Township Basic Education High School No 24 and Myotha Village BEHS of Ngazun Township, and met officials of Mandalay, PyinOoLwin, Kyaukse, Myingyan and NyaungU District USDAs.


(7)Minister meets guest from Germany

YANGON, 29 Feb -  Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met Mr Andreas Hoffmann, General Manager of Deutsche Bank, Federal Republic of Germany at his office this morning.

Also present were Governor of Central Bank of Myanmar and officials.

(8)Compilation of nation-building endeavours Vol IV discussed   

YANGON, 29 Feb - A meeting was held for compilation of the book on nation building endeavours Volume TV to document the accomplishments of the State Peace and Development Council for the well-being of the nation.

Speaking at the meeting, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung said the book will be published to document the nation-building endeavours of the government which achieved success within a short period. He also invited the participants to present difficulties faced in compiling the book.


(9)42 armed group members exchange arms for peace in January

YANGON, 29 Feb - The State E8eace and Development Council, upholding Our Three Main National Causes, is striving for national reconsolidation with might and main, and emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation.

Realizing that their destructive acts did not benefit the nation at all and under standing the genuine goodwill and correct endeavours of the government, remaining armed groups have been exchanging arms for peace individually or in groups.

Pvts Sai Su and Sai Ka Lein of No 241 Brigade of SURA armed group, bringing together with them two M-23s and 507 rounds of ammunition, Pvts Aik Lu and Aik Mein of SURA armed group, Sgt Ohn Than, wife Ma Aye Aye Win and daughter Ma Yin Yin Tun of ABSDF armed group, WOII Sai Kham, Pvts Aik Lwin, Aik Kwe, Kyaing Maung, Maung Swe, Sai Nyunt and Pan Seikta of No 152 Battalion of No 758 Brigade of SURA armed group with one BA-64, one M-23, one M-22 and five magazines, Pvts Sai Hla, Aik Lut and Hsan Kye and Lt level Maung Khin, Pvts Tun Kya and San Tun of No 153 Battalion with one M-16, one M-22 and 250 rounds of ammunition exchanged arm for peace in North-East Command area in January

Similarly, Sgt Pado Than Tin of No 6 Brigade of KNU armed group with one M-16, one grenade and one walkie-talkie in South-East Command area, Pvt Saw Bo Htwe, wife Naw Ma Yi, sons Saw Thu Khee and Saw Hse Pha Hto, daughter Naw Hso Kee of No 7 DO Battalion of KNU armed group with one mine, Pvts Saw Moe Nyo and Saw Nay Htoo, Pvt Maung Soe of No 12 Battalion with one AK- 47, one magazine and 15 rounds . of ammunition in Coastal Region Command area, Pvt Ma Pa Hson of CNA armed group (Northern), Pvts Kyon Pa and Ma Ngu of NNC armed group and Captain level Pa Kha, Sgt Gan Ngwe and Pvt Bwam of No 2 Headquarters of No 8 Brigade with one grenade in North-West Command area and Pvts Saw Ar Ti and Saw Ba Mon of No 4 DO Battalion of KNU armed group, Pvts Saw Ei Phaw and Saw Ei Htoo of No 3 Company of No 2 Brigade and Cpl Tun Naing, wife Ma Win Maw and sister-in-law Ma Su of No 7 Battalion with one M- 16, two magazines and 50 rounds of ammunition in Southern Command area exchanged arms for peace.

Officials warmly welcomed 42 persons who exchanged arms for peace at the respective camps and attended to their needs. More persons of armed group are going to exchange arms for peace.

(10)19.8 kilos of Ephedrine powder seized in Haka

YANGON, 29 Feb - A  combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched the car from Aye Chan Tha Bus Line, with plate No-3 Ka/2557, bound for Mandalay and seizedl9.8 kilos of Ephedrine powder. When questioned, the owner fled and the two men who carried it, Zam Ciin Than, son of U Than Za Khan, Tomboll village, Tonzang Township and Won Ciin Sein, son of U Gin Za Kyin, Nginnun village, Tiddim Township were arrested. Action is being taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(11)63 Taungtha members resign of own accord

YANGON, 29 Feb - Sixty-three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Taungtha Township, Mandalay Division.

Sixty-three members of Zagyan Village-tract National League for Democracy, Taungtha Township, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 23 November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in the party politics of NLD.
