He then handed over the gifts to Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-l said:
It gives me great pleasure to be here at this auspicious ceremony for the handing over of medical equipment and medicines to the Ministry of Health of the Union of Myanmar by the Royal Thai Government under the Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to HE Mr Korn Dabbaransi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health of Thailand, and the Thai delegation from the Department of Technical and Economic Cooperation (DTEC) and the Ministry of Public Health of Thailand. It is very thoughtful of him to personally come to Myanmar to participate in the ceremony and on behalf of the Government of the Union of Myanmar, I would like to express our sincere appreciation and thanks.
Myanmar and Thailand share a common border of over 2000 kilometres and our two peoples have similar culture, traditions and religion. Moreover, our two nations are united in our desire to further strengthen and consolidate the bilateral ties for mutual benefit. Today' s ceremony stands as a witness to the common wish to cooperate with each other in various fields.
A healthy life is considered in Myanmar as one of the greatest blessings in life. Therefore, our Government has designated "Uplift of health, fitness and education standards of the entire nation" as one of the main social objectives. With this end in view, priority is given to ensure comprehensive health care services to the people, especially those who are residing in the rural areas and the border areas. Today, not only has medical facilities greatly improved in the urban areas but primary health care has reached to all parts of the nation for the first time ever. As a result, the health standards of the whole country, particularly those of the border areas, have risen dramatically in recent times.
At the same time, while we are mainly relying on our own resources in these endeavours, Myanmar has also accorded priority to promoting technical cooperation among the countries of the region. This is also because of our belief that the countries of the Southeast Asia Region face similar health challenges and a coordinated effort is required if we are to overcome the health problems in the region.
It may be recalled that these very issues were discussed extensively at the WHO Southeast Asia Region Health Minister' s Meeting held in Yangon in October 1999, a meeting Your Excellency also participated. Myanmar is determined to continue to participate in regional activities and promote closer ties within the WHO Southeast Asia, Region as well as within the ASEAN. We will also strive to strengthen the close bilateral friendly ties with all our neighbouring countries. We are currently cooperating with Thailand by holding joint cross-border meetings for controlling communicable diseases such as malaria and HIV/AIDS.
The bilateral technical and economic cooperation between Myanmar and Thailand under DTEC programme can be traced back to 1992. In the health sector, this has taken the form of capacity building of health personnel, assistance of medicine and medical equipment, border area health development and Bago model township health development programme. During the 1998/1999 Thai-Myanmar technical cooperation programme also covered the areas of training and provision of medical equipment and drugs for strengthening district health systems.
The drugs and medical equipment provided under the Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme will be used to enhance the quality of health care services in the rural areas and border areas. It is most appropriate that the medicines being handed over today include those for combating malaria and TB, two diseases that are again raising their heads in the region.
In conclusion, may I once again reiterate our sincere appreciation and thanks to the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand and His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Mr Korn Dabaransri in particular, for the kind gesture of friendship and co- operation.
Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and Mr Korn Dabaransri inspected the gifts.
