(1)Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe sends  felicitations to Kuwait

YANGON, 25 Feb - Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the state Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Amir of the State of Kuwait on the occasion of the National Day of the State of Kuwait which falls on 25 February 2000.


(2)Secretary-1 looks into border area development projects in southern, eastern Shan State

YANGON, 24 Feb - Chairman of the Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by ministers, deputy ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department and officials, left for Namhsan, Shan State, by Tatmadaw aircraft on 22 February morning.

The Secretary-1 and party were welcomed there by Commander of Namhsan Station Brig-Gen Kyaw Aung and military officers and civilian officials.

Next, the Secretary-l and party proceeded to Homein Village, Homein Region, Mongpan Township, southern Shan State.

On arrival there, they were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo and departmental personnel, Chairman of the Committee for Maintenance of Discipline and Restoration of Peace U Naw Mein Khun and party and local national people.

Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo reported on the finding of the axis for Mayoeyan-Yewe Road which will link Tasuttain and Homein, progress of work in construction of the road, repair of Monghtaw-Monghta Road and requirements.

The Secretary-1 met with members of Border Area Special Administrative Group (Homein), departmental personnel, members of the committee for maintenance of discipline and restoration of peace, towns elders and local national people in Homein Hall.

Chairman of Border Area Special Administrative Committee (Homein) Maj Soe Moe Aung reported on location of Homein Village-tract, topographical condition, weather condition, matters related to villages included in Homein Village-tract, number of households and condition of population, business undertakings including agriculture and livestock breeding, water transport services, education, health, treatment of drug addicts, roads, bridges, construction of roads, rule of law and order and community peace and tranquillity communication, power supply and arrangements for generating power from Naunglon Lake.

Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo, ministers and deputy ministers gave additional reports.

Then, U Naw Mein Khun and party reported on measures taken for regional development and requirements.

Afterwards, the Secretary-l spoke of the purpose of the tour to Homein region, and added that he has frequently met with leaders of the region and attended to requirements for regional development.

MTA, placing trust in the Government and abandoning armed struggle line, returned to the legal fold, and therefore, the Government is responsible for improvement of living conditions of the people from Homein region and regional development and attending to requirements.

With the aim of ensuring the flourishing of national solidarity, the perpetual existence of the Union and achievement of equitable progress among national people, the Government is implementing the project for development of border areas and national races.

Homein region is covered by the project for development of border areas and national races, and entertaining the notion that there have been many things left to be done in order to expedite efforts for regional development, the Government is placing special emphasis on the efforts for improvement of living conditions of the people and regional development.

The Secretary-1 spoke of fulfilling requirements submitted by regional officials and providing assistance for business undertakings of the region.

The Government is making efforts to improve the economic sector based on agriculture and livestock breeding, and providing assistance for agricultural, livestock breeding and industrial undertakings Requirements for education and health sectors will be fulfilled and assistance provided for the social sector.

With regard to transport which plays a crucial role in striving for regional development, requirements for the building of Mayoeyan-Yewe Road, construction work of which is to be completed before monsoon.

Arrangements are also being made to upgrade Homein Village into a town and to enable it to have town characteristics.

Measures are being taken to generate power from Naunglon Lake, and business undertakings will thrive and the living conditions of local people will improve more and more.

The Government, on its part, is taking measures for regional and economic development and improvement of living conditions of local people, who also need to actively and diligently strive for regional development.

Then, departmental officials reported on departmental tasks.

The Secretary-l gave instructions on their work and presented gifts to employees.

Then, the Secretary-l and party paid respects and offered alms to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Punavamsa at Withoaddi Kyaungtaik in Homein.  Next, the Secretary-l went to Naunglon Lake, Homein.

Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo reported on arrangements for generation of power.

The Secretary-1 inspected the arrangements for power generation.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party went to Naunglon Pagoda.

Later, the Secretary-l and party inspected MTA Gems Workshop in Meinmaing, Homein Village, and old Homein Textile and Finishing Plant.

After that the Secretary-l and party paid respects to the Buddha images at the prayer hall of Eissathaya Pagoda and made donations towards the pagoda funds.

Next, the Secretary-l and party visited Pyinyeinaye Pagoda

The Secretary-l and party proceeded to Homein Station Hospital, where they were welcomed by Acting Medical Superintendent Dr Myint Thein and staff.

The Secretary-l and party inspected the operation room, the patient ward and the X-ray unit.

The Secretary-l and party also inspected the buildings of the court and law office and the park in Homein.

Later, the Secretary-l and party proceeded to Homein Basic Middle School, where they were welcomed by Headmaster U Han Htay and teachers.

The Secretary-l and party inspected the classrooms.

Chairman of Myanmar Education-Committee Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented the TV set, the video cassette recorder, the cassette and video and cassette tapes donated by Myanmar Education Committee and video tapes on the life of the Buddha, English textbooks and cassette tapes by the Ministry of Education to the headmaster.

The Secretary-l gave instructions on arrangements to produce outstanding students who will contribute towards regional development.

The Secretary-l and party stopped for the night at Pyinyeinaye Yeiktha.

Yesterday morning, the Secretary-1 met with Chairman of the Committee for Maintenance of Discipline and Restoration of Peace U Naw Mein Chun and party and presented gifts to them.

The Secretary-l and party, together with Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo, left Homein by Tatmadaw aircraft and arrived at the construction site of 33-mile-long Tasuttain- Homein Road.

The commander and officials reported on progress of construction work.

The Secretary-l and party inspected the road by car, and proceeded to Monghtaw Village, Monghtaw region, in Mongton Township, eastern part of Shan State, where they were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein and officials.

Then, the Secretary-l inspected n arms of various kinds, 1,198 rounds of ammunition, 122 grenades and 76 plastic mines handed over by the 76 member MTA group led by U Shaung Yin who exchanged arms for peace at Monghtaw Tactical Operations Command on 22 February 2000.

In meeting with U Shaung Yin and members, the Secretary-l expressed his pleasure for the fact that the return to the legal fold of some MTA members has coincided with his tour of the region, and the purpose of his tour was to fulfill require ments for development of border areas including southern and eastern parts of Shan State, Homein, Monghtaw and Monghta regions.

The Secretary-l added that as they have returned to the legal fold, they can make a living in a proper way together with their families, and their return to the legal fold brings benefits not only to themselves but also to the region and local people.

He also said that therefore, the Government will provide assistance with a view to enabling them to lead a life of high standard.

Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein reported on regional development tasks covering education, health and transport.

The Secretary-l also met with employees of departments and urged them to strive for development of the region where they are assigned and to instill in the people the sense of love for the nation and the people and the sense of preservation of traditions.

He also called on all to work harder for regional development and improvement of living conditions of the people.

Then, the Secretary-l presented gifts to employees of departments.

The Secretary-l also presented gifts to members of MTA group who exchanged arms for peace.


(3)Farming of battalions under Yangon Command in progress

YANGON, 24 Feb - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected the farming project of the battalion in South Okkalapa Township under Yangon Command and Nursery Market Festival at Myepadetha Park this afternoon.

Officiating Commander of the battalion Maj Aye Khaing and officials reported to the Secretary-2 on raising of pedigree pigs.

The Secretary-2 and party then inspected a coconut plantation and vegetable patches in front of the pig farm.

At the No 4 Company farm, the Secretary-2 and party inspected cultivation of various kinds of vegetables.

During inspection of the water tank, the Secretary-2 stressed the need to make arrangements to supply clean water to the battalion.

After greeting families of the respective companies, the Secretary-2 urged them to strive for success of farming at the battalion.

Together with officials, the Secretary-2 inspected cultivation of crops such as cauliflower, various kinds of mustard and maize, banana and poultry and dairy farming.

They then looked around the farms at No 3 and No 4 companies and the battalion.

At the briefing hall, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than explained farming work of the battalions and companies under Yangon Command, systematic division of agricultural tasks to ensure success, profits from family farming and cash assistance being rendered to the families sector-wise.

In giving counsel, the Secretary-2 stressed the need to conduct farming on all available land, to practise reward and punishment system for the progress of work and to introduce competition systems.

Yangon Command is opening welfare shops in selling social goods to families at low prices and making arrangements for the families to earn extra income from farming and to generate jobs.

The command is rendering assistance to families to cultivate various kinds of crops and to conduct poultry fanning.

Every battalion under the command is growing paddy and other crops and conducting fish and poultry farming.

In the evening, the Secretary-2 and party visited the Nursery Market Festival which continued for the 50th day today.

Managing Director of Myanma Agriculture Service U Tun Than and officials reported on successful displaying and selling of agricultural produce and plants during the 50-day period and arrival of visitors to the festival.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo looked around the festival and cordially greeted the visitors.

The festival has already sold K 12.4 million worth of agricultural produce and nurseries to date.


(4)Deputy Prime Minister meets Japanese visitors

YANGON, 24 Feb - Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin of the Union of Myanmar met President Mr Sadakane Doi of Daiwa Fukushi Zaidan and President Mr Eiichiro Okumoto Daiwa Institute of Research and party at his office at 3 pm today.

Also present at the call were Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar and officials.


(5)Singapore entrepreneur calls on Minister for H&T

YANGON, 24 Feb -  Mr Lee Hock Chua, proprietor of Tripo Warehouse Pte Ltd and Tripo Transport Company of Singapore, and party called on Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin at his office this afternoon.

They discussed making investments in developing of hotels in Tachilek and Kawthoung.

Also present were Director-General of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism and officials.


(6)Improvement of roads, bridges under way in Ayeyawady Div

YANGON, 24 Feb - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun inspected improvement of roads in Ayeyawady Division yesterday.

Accompanied by officials, the minister inspected Myinkaseik Bridge Project Officials explained progress in implementing the project.

In Myaungmya, the minister and party heard a report on developing of roads in the region. At Kyungon Bridge Project, the minister looked into the requirements presented by officials of the project, speaking of the need to upgrade Myaungmya- Kangyi-Kyungalay Road.

In Wakema, the minister and party inspected the chosen site to build a bridge, urging local authorities to render assistance in implementing the project and to develop Kyungon-Wakema Road.

The minister inspected the chosen site to build Shwelaung Bridge, speaking of the need to present work requirements in accord with the priority base.

At Pantanaw Bridge Project, the minister and party urged officials to make efforts for completion of road and bridge projects in Ayeyawady Division in accord with the schedule.


(7)Minister for Health inspects Renal Unit at YGH

YANGON, 24 Feb - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein together with directors-general inspected maintenance of kidney cleaning machine and laboratory for kidney transplant at Renal Unit of the Yangon General Hospital yesterday afternoon. Director-General of Medical Research Department (Lower Myanmar) Dr Paing Soe, Medical Superintendent Dr Teik Wan and Professor Dr Than Aye conducted the minister round the unit.

The minister gave instructions on durability and maintenance of the machines.

Then, Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein inquired after Ko Nay Lin who had undergone kidney transplant in December, 1999.

The minister posed for souvenir photo together with the staff members who gave medical treatment to Ko Nay Lin.

Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein then inspected renovation of special intensive care unit at Cardiac Unit and gave instructions.

Afterwards, Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein cordially greeted National Convention delegates U Mahn Tin Aung Than and U Phoe Shwe Mya who are being treated at Cardiac Unit and looked into the requirements.


(8)Ministry finds ways to develop airlines

YANGON, 24 Feb - The Ministry of Transport held a meeting to seek means to develop its domestic and foreign air runs this afternoon at the ministry, addressed by Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister said Air transport is making progress as the International Airport under the ministry is handling more flights. Efforts should be made to ensure convenience of all passengers for development of tourism and increase in foreign exchange earnings.

The meeting will find ways to fulfil the requirements of airlines.

Officials of the airlines presented functions sector-wise.

The minister looked into their requirements and gave the concluding speech.


(9)Minister for Electric Power inspects Zaungtu Hydel Power Project

YANGON, 24 Feb - Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, accompanied by officials inspected Zaungtu Hydel Power Project on 22 February afternoon.

He inspected installation of equipment and progress of work there and presented gifts to foreign technicians.

Yesterday morning, the minister and party observed test running of the power plant and gave instructions on working in coordination and cooperation with foreign technicians, keeping the plant clean and pleasant, ensuring worksite safety, minimizing loss and wastage, planting shade trees and kitchen crops, and working for staff welfare.


(10)Millennium Myanmar Products Expo & International Trade Fair opened

YANGON, 24 Feb - The Millennium Myanmar Products Expo & International Trade Fair, sponsored by Quartz International Co Ltd with the assistance of Directorate of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute and Defence Services Record Office, was opened at Tatmadaw Convention Hall here this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Vice-Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint, ambassadors of foreign missions in Yangon, senior military officers, local and foreign journalists led by Managing Director of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Tin Kha, heads of department and guests.

Director of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute Col Ye Htut and Director of the company U Win Naing Oo formally opened the fair.

Thc managing director of the company and the chairman of AA Electronics Ltd (Samsung) gave speeches.

It was held with the aim of enabling the Myanmar products to penetrate markets, Myanmar people to get access to quality goods and the nation to lay good economic foundation.

Seventy companies are opening 115 booths at the fair which continues till 27 February.


(11)Minister meets foreign guests

YANGON, 24 Feb - Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein met Country Manager of Petronas Trading Co Ltd of Malaysia Mr Roney Bzaidell and party at his office at 1 pm today.

Similarly, Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein met Resident Representative of FAO Mr Francis Rinville and party at his office at 1.30 pm today.

Also present at the calls were Deputy Minister, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry.


(12)Minister for Sports meets Ambassador Of PRC

YANGON, 24 Feb - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint met Ambassador of People's Republic of China Mr Liang Dong and members at Jade Hall of the National Indoor Stadium No 1 in Thuwunna this afternoon.


(13)19,925 stimulant tablets seized in Taunggyi

YANGON, 24 Feb - A total of 100 packets containing 19,925 stimulant tablets were seized in a house on Yadana Lane, Nyaungphyu Sakhanyat Ward, Taunggyi, Shan State, on 16 February.

Acting on a tip-off, the team comprising members of the regional Defence Services Intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force searched the house of Aik Nwe (a) Naw Kham (a) Kyaw Myint Htoo.

The authorities there found three men Hsaing Lin of 15, Mingala Street, Kantha Ward, Taunggyi, Sai Mya Ohn, of 124, Thirimingala Street, Yayayegwin Ward, Taunggyi, and Aung Min Oo (a) Aung Lin Oo of Nya-1309, Hninsi Street, Nyaung-phyu street with the drugs and arrested the men who are believed to have been engaged in drug trafficking.

On further investigation, the authorities concerned arrested Nang Kham Yon of Ma/651, Ywethla Street, Nyaungphyu Sakhan Ward, who were dealing in drug trade as a broker and Sai Phon Lu of Kyauktaing Street Ward 1, Panglong, who was staying at the Nang Kham Yon's and who was owner of the drugs.

Action is being taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(14)10 Bhamo Township NLD members resigned of own accord

YANGON, 24 Feb - Ten members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Bhamo Township, Kachin State.

Ten members of Bhamo Township NLD, Kachin State, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Bhamo Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Office and the party concerned on 26 September 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
