(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman  Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Brunei

YANGON, 23 Feb - On the occasion of the National Day of Brunei Darussalam, which falls on 23 February 2000, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Muizzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.


(2) No 13 Sugar Mill (Okkan) at Gonnyindan village, Taikkyi  Township commissioned into service
 
YANGON, 22 Feb - The No 13 Sugar Mill (Okkan) of Myanma Sugarcane Enterprise at Gonnyindan village, Taikkyi Township, Yangon Division, was commissioned into service this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Managing Director of MSE U Myo Myint reported on location of the mill, completion and test run of the mill, sugarcane cultivation in the surrounding areas, building of roads to ensure timely transport of sugarcane to the mill, sugarcane purchase and requirements.

Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Matu and Chairman of Taikkyi Township Peace and Development Council U Myint Than reported on sugarcane cultivation and yield and sale of sugarcane to the mill.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin explained completion of the sugar mill, existing sugar mills and new ones, sugarcane sown acreage and yield of the region and sugarcane purchase.

Officials of Fortune International Limited which is conducting agriculture in Taikkyi Township presented progress in cultivating sugarcane.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and Ministers Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and U Aung San gave suggestions on ensuring convenience in sugarcane purchase and running of sugarcane mills at full capacity.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said efforts should be made for the No 13 Sugar Mill (Okkan) to operate at full capacity; sugarcane should be cultivated as projected; and the respective departments should render assistance in distributing quality strains.

Local authorities and officials of the mill should make concerted efforts to ensure convenience in purchase and transport sectors.

As the government is buying the produce from farmers at good prices, they should sell sugarcane to the mill as targeted.
 
The Secretary-2 presented a fruit basket to Chief Representative Ms Luoyun of China National Agriculture and Construction Machinery Import and Export Corporation of the People s Republic of China, which brought in and installed the equipment at the mill.
 
Lt-Gen Tin Oo and Ms Luoyun unveiled the signboard of the mill.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and Ms Luoyun formally opened the mill by cutting the ribbon.

After launching the mill, the Secretary-2 and party inspected the process of production.

By using the doubling charcoal filtering system, the mill can produce 2,000 tons of 100 per cent white sugar daily.


(3) Hline River Bridge (Myochaung) in Hmawby Township to be opened soon
 
YANGON, 22 Feb - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected farming in Taikkyi Township and Hline River Bridge (Myochaung) Project in Hmawby Township in Yangon Division, today.

Managing Director of the company Daw San San Yi reported on the project to reclaim 12,309 acres at Thabyu Myaukhline area, in the township, land clearing, building of roads to the project, cultivation of monsoon and summer paddy and other crops and yield.

Managing Director U Mya Han of Fortune International Limited which is also conducting agriculture in the township also took part in the discussions.

Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Matu and Chairman of Taikkyi Township Peace and Development Council U Myint Than reported on building of roads to farming projects, requirements to build bridges and efforts being made by the District and Township Councils.

Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin explained construction of new roads and bridges.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone explained assistance being provided for development of roads and success of agriculture.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said the government is rendering assistance for the success of agriculture projects of national entrepreneurs. More assistance will be rendered for the progress of the transport sector, he said, adding it is Known that failure to cultivate as targeted was due to lack of experience in farming.

National entrepreneurs should find effective ways such as using quality strains for the success of agriculture, he stressed.
 
Together with officials, the Secretary-2 inspected cultivation of paddy, maize, sesame, mustard and beans and pulses and storage of seeds at the project of Super One International Company (Myanmar) Ltd.
 
The company has put 4,300 acres under paddy and other crops up to 1999-2000. It is planning to put another 8,000 acres under crops this fiscal.
 
In Hmawby Township, the Secretary-2 and party inspected Hline River Bridge (Myochaung) Project which is included in Bawlekyun Bridges Project.

At the briefing hall, the Secretary-2 and party heard a report on progress in implementing the project, presented by Superintending Engineer U San Nyein, joined in by Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe.

Officials also explained progress in construction of the approach roads, collective participation of local authorities in road and bridge projects and arrangement to irrigate crops in Bawlekyun and Aingkalaung-kyun regions.

After looking into the requirements, the Secretary-2 and party inspected the project.

Linking Hmawby and Htantabin townships, the bridge, 1,940 feet long, will have a 24-foot wide motor-way flanked by two five-foot wide pedestrian lanes on either side.

Eighty per cent of the project has been completed. Efforts are being made for launching of the bridge soon.

(4) Minister receives Ambassador of Singapore

YANGON, Feb 22 - Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Ambassador of Singapore to Myanmar Mr Simon Tensing de Cruz at his office this afternoon.

Also present were Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism and officials.


(5) Minister meets Ambassador of Singapore

YANGON, 22 Feb - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe met Ambassador of Singapore Mr Simon de Cruz at his office at 1 pm today.

Similarly, Minister Maj- Gen Hla Myint Swe met Mr Roy Choung of Man B & W Diesel (Singapore) Pte Ltd of Germany at his office today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, Managing Director U Tun Aung Myint of Inland Water Transport and officials.


(6) Minister meets Ambassador of India

YANGON, 22 Feb - Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saran at his office at 3.30 pm today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister, Director-General of Directorate of Trade, Director-General of Border Trade Department and officials.

(7) Minister for Mines inspects coal mines in southern Shan State

YANGON, 22 Feb - Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint and Managing Director of No 1 Mining Enterprise and officials inspected mines and coal mines in southern Shan State from 18 to 21 February.

On 18 February, the minister inspected production of steel rods at No 1 Iron and Steel Plant in PyinOoLwin. He inspected installation of furnace and transformer and construction of factory for ferro chrome.

The minister and party observed products of the factory and inspected plantation of onion, papaya and strawberry.

The minister and party inspected gypsum mining camp in Hsipaw Township and gave instructions on exceeding targets seeking new market and welfare of service personnel.

The minister inspected coal mining at Sanlaung region. He discussed mining matters with Commander of North-East Command Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo.

On 19 February, the minister inspected Namtu Mines and Smelting Plant. The minister met miners. In the afternoon, the minister inspected production of spare parts at Namtu industrial workshop.

CEC member of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Brig-Gen Ohn Myint met EC members of Namtu Township USDA and discussed objectives and organizational matters of the association and participation in community welfare services and efforts to propagate the Union Spirit.

On 20 February, the minister made a speech at the conclusion of basic mining course No 10. He then presented prizes to outstanding trainees.

The minister inspected lime plantation for welfare of service personnel in the training school compound.

The minister inspected Namtu People s Hospital and Namtu coal mines. Manager U San Lwin reported on production and sale of coal in 1999-2000 fiscal year.

The minister inspected construction of cement plant by Mawkeinnayi Co Ltd and Asia World Co.


(8) First beam fixed to Aung Zeya Bridge

YANGON, 22 Feb - A ceremony to fix the first beam at Aung Zeya Bridge was held at the project site this morning.

Present were Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Director-General of Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development , Adviser at the State Peace and Development Council , Deputy Managing Director (Works) of Public Works, heads of departments and Superintending Engineers and officials.

The congregation received the Five Precepts from Sayadaw Agga Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja Bhaddanta Saddhiya of Shwethuwun Kyaungtaik in Thingangyun Township.

The minister and heads of departments presented offertories to members of the Sangha.
At 9:36:45 am, the auspicious time, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun fixed the gold bolts of the 12-metre long first beam of the bridge.
 
The minister performed the ritual of gold and silver showers to the installation of the beam. He also presented  soon  to members of the Sangha.

The minister also inspected construction of Kazan-Tarkway Road and Pantanaw Bridge.

He gave instructions on completion of the tasks as scheduled.


(9) Sports equipment presented to Sports Plus Education Training School in Magway, Minbu

YANGON, 22 Feb - A ceremony to present sports equipment and dresses to Sports Plus Education Training School in Magway was held at Basic Education High School No1 in Magway on 20 February, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint.

The minister gave a speech and presented sports equipment worth K 425,000 to Township Education Officer U Kyaw Lwin.

Similarly, the minister and party proceeded to sports equipment presentation ceremony of Minbu BEHS.

Then, the minister presented sports equipment worth K 425,000 to District Education Officer U Kyaw Win.

(10)  1.58335 kilos of heroin and other narcotic drugs  seized in Mohnyin, Mandalay

YANGON, 22 Feb - Kyaw Win, driver of a Hilux vehicle (Kha/5366), son of U Aik San of Ward 6, Lashio, Khon Aing (a) Shwe Htoo, son of U Khon Kwe of Mawtan Region, Mohnyin, and Sai Maung Lin, son of U Aik Tun of Ward 6, Lashio, who were on the vehicle, were arrested together with heroin weighing 1.58335 kilos hidden in one hundred soap-cases, a 9 mm pistol, two magazines and 14 rounds of ammunition by a combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, on 9 February, at an inspection gate at the entrance to Nawnghkio, while making a search after receiving information.

A similar combined team, acting on information, searched the house of Aung Thein Kyaw (a) Maung Kyaw, son of U Aung Hla of Myothit Ward 2, Chanmyathazi, Mandalay, on 11 February and arrested him together with 145,75 stimulant tablets, 0.7 litre of opium oil and 200 grams of Ephedrine.

Action is being taken against the four according to law.


(11)  11 TadaU Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 22 Feb - Eleven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of TadaU Township, Mandalay Division.

Eleven members of TadaU Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to TadaU Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Office and the party concerned on 26 December 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics.of NLD.
