Professor of Asia University Mr Michiharu Kurita said the study trip to Myanmar is the first one year after Asia University Volunteer Centre has been established. Asia University aims to turn out students who will be able to work for peace and development of Asia. The majority of the Japanese people have not known much about Myanmar except the fact that it is a religious country.

He said that he has already been informed of daily activities of the Myanmar people which are inextricably intertwined with loving kindness and sympathy towards one another, and the main aim of the trip is to study the disposition and traditions of the people of Myanmar.

He added that wheelchairs and school stationery for children have been collected through various ways as well as Internet. School stationery and 25 wheelchairs were sent to the centre by those not only from Asia University but also from all over Japan. On behalf of the Japanese people, the study group will present these donations to children and disabled persons in Myanmar.

He said that another aim of the trip is to know whether there is a voluntary activity wherein students of Asia University can have a practical part, and if there is a voluntary activity in Myanmar in which Japanese students can participate, they can have the chance of coming to Myanmar frequently and making donations to children and disabled persons all the more.

He noted that voluntary activity will contribute towards promotion of dealings between the peoples of two countries and bring about deeper understanding between Japan and Myanmar.

In conclusion, he said that the study group would like to serve as a bridge between two countries and added that the wish implies the translating into action Asia University's aim to contribute towards peace and development of Asia.

Next, student of Asia University Mr Hiroyuki Takashima said they had known nothing except news about Myanmar which appeared on television and in publications, and the aim of the trip is to promote friendship and dealings between two countries.

He added that they will relay their knowledge about social welfare centres and orphanages they have visited and about the Myanmar people and their culture and traditions to Japanese students.

He noted that although the period of the present trip is short, it has been found that peace and tranquillity reigns in the country, and when they visited the Shwedagon Pagoda, it struck wonder into their heart to find out peace and tranquil mind of the devote Myanmar people.

He said that upon studying social activities, they were much pleased at seeing the Government and the people joining hands in doing voluntary work.

Then, Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe accepted wheelchairs handed over by Mr Kurita and Mr Takashima on behalf of the students of Asia University of Japan and presented a certificate of honour to them.

Afterwards, Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe said Social Security Board under the Ministry of Labour provides free medical care for workers of factories and plants in addition to monetary benefits.

In the entire Myanmar, there are 89 clinics, a worker's hospital (250-bed) in Yangon and a workers' hospital in Mandalay which are providing free medical care services to over 430,000 workers.

With regard to implementation of the objectives of the board, wheelchairs are very important for clinics and hospitals.

The wheelchairs donated by the Japanese students will be of great benefit to patients and injured persons.

The minister quoted the guidance of Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council as saying that the Government believes that only citizens who have spiritual and physical development and are imbued with social qualities of high level can strive for improvement of national life, and therefore, the Government is striving with national outlook for development of the social sector which plays a crucial role in efforts for national development.
