(1) Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing host 53dr Anniversary Union Day reception and dinner

YANGON, 12 Feb-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing hosted the 53rd Anniversary Union Day reception and dinner on the lawns in the President  s House Compound on Ahlon Road at 6.30 pm today.

On arrival at President s House Compound at 6.30 pm, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing were welcomed by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council General Maung Aye, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than.

Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing greeted Union Day delegates members of traditional cultural troupes from states and divisions, members of Dawei traditiona1 cultural troupe those of Union Solidarity and Development Association from states and divisions and guests. Myanma Athan modern music troupes entertained the guests with modern songs before and during dinner.


(2) Secretary-1 attends opening of building of Kyauktan Myoma BEMS

YANGON, 12 Feb - A ceremony to open and hand over the three-storey building of Myoma Basic Education Middle School donated by Shwethanlwin Company Ltd under the supervision of the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development of the Ministry of Construction, was held in Kyauktan, Yangon Division, this morning, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-1 formally unveiled the signboard of the school. Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and Thiha Thudama Manijotadhara U Thein Win and Thiha Thudama Theingi Daw Ni formally opened the school building.

Then, the Secretary- 1 and party inspected the interactive audio visual learning room, the library, the educational broadcasting room, the computer application room, the computer aided instruction room, the altar room, the domestic science room, the arts and culture room and the musical room, and observed the. students demonstrating their skill.

Then, the ceremony to mark the opening and handing over of the three-storey building of the school was held in Shwethanlwin Hall of the school.

Managing Director of Shwethanlwin Company Group Construction Company Ltd U Moe Kyaw Thu reported on the purpose of donating the three-storey building for the school by the family of Shwethanlwin Company Group.

He said that Shwethanlwin Company Group will continue to cooperate with the Government in implementing education promotion programmes.

He stated that the new three-storey building was built beginning 7 April 1999, and construction work completed on 5 February 2000, and a total of K 112.5 million was spent on construction of the new three-story building and the upgrading of the school.

He added that one classroom can accommodate 45 students, and 14 classrooms, 630 students to pursue education peacefully.

Headmaster U Kyaw Min spoke words of thanks.  The Secretary-1 said today when the school building is opened, is the 53rd Anniversary Union Day, and the opening ceremony of the school building is held on the 53rd Anniversary Union Day with the aim of inculcating the sense of Union Spirit and national solidarity in the mind of the student youths to be produced by this school in accord with the State s conviction of ensuring perpetual existence of the Union and perpetual flourishing and propagation of national solidarity.

The Secretary-1 added that well-wishers have donated the school building, modern pedagogic aids, multimedia teaching centre, school furniture and food stalls, so material requirements have been already fulfilled. He urged parents and teachers to nurture the students to have high standard of politeness and manners, to have a sense of preserving traditional culture, to be imbued with patriotism and Union Spirit and to become stalwart persons who serve the interests of the nation. Thiha Thudama Manizotadara U Thein Win and Thiha Thudama Theingi Daw Ni handed over documents related to the school building to Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung.

The Secretary- 1 accepted K 1 million donated for the school welfare fund by Thiha Thudama Manizotadara U Thein Win and Thiha Thudama Theingi Daw Ni, who also presented K 72,000 for uniforms of teachers to Headmaster U Kyaw Min.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung accepted a total of K 1,775,900 including K 380,900 by the School board of trustees and parents, K 100,000 each by U Sein Tun Aung (Retired Police Colonel)-Daw Htwe Nyunt and family, U Ohn Myint-Daw Khin Lay Whee and family, U Hsu Wai and family, U Aye Han and family and U Than Oo and family (UPG Co), Chairman of Myanmar Chinese Merchants Association U Shwe, Myanmar Fukyan Chinese National Association, Elephant Brand Cement Company of Thailand, Managing Director of Shwegaba Construction U Maung Maung, U Khin Sein-Daw Khin Khin Myint and family and U Zaw Naing-Daw Yee Yee Myint (Maykhala Co Ltd).

Title holder for outstanding performance in social field (Grade II) U Kyaw Win presented a gift to the Secretary- 1.  The Secretary-1 signed in the visitors  book. Then, the Secretary-1 attended the ceremony to put back into service Shwethanlwin Road jointly built by Shwethanlwin Company and Township Development Committee.

Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin, Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Lu Maw and Thiha Thudama Manizotara U Thein Win and Thiha Thudama Theingi Daw Ni formally put the road into service. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the road.

Shwethanlwin Road, 350 feet long and l6 feet wide, was built with the use of K 500,000 contributed by Shwethanlwin Company and K 226,475 by Township Development Committee.  Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the construction of the three-storey building of As he Primary School in Kyauktan.

(3) Maha Saddhammodaya nine-storey building of Maha Theindatwgyi Pariyati Sarthintaik in Pabedan Township opened

YANGON, 12 Feb-A ceremony to open Maha Saddhammodaya nine-storey building of Maha Theindawgyi Pariyatti Sarthintaik in Pabedan Township was held in conjunction with a ceremony to donate cash and share merits at the Sarthintaik, this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present on the occasion were member Sayadaws of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee led by Myingyan Sayadawgyi Bhaddanta Sobhita, Presiding Sayadaw of the Sarthintaik Agga Maha Ganthavacakapandita Bhaddanta Kumara and Sayadaws, members of the Sangha and Tatmadaw officers of the Ministry of Defence, departmental officials, Patrons of Maha Theindawgyi Pariyati Sarthintaik Board of Trustees and chairman and members, well-wishers and guests. First, Ministers Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein and U Aung Khin, and Chairman of Maha Theindawgyi Pariyati Sarthintaik Board of Trustees U Han formally opened the Kyaungdawgyi.

Then, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo unveiled the signboard of the Kyaungdawgyi. Afterwards, Minister U Aung Khin unveiled stone inscription of the Kyaungdawgyi. Chairman of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Arcinna invested the congregation with the Five Precepts.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, the ministers, the deputy ministers and officials presented offertories to Sayadaws. Minister U Aung Khin supplicated on religious matters. Later, Chairman of Yangon West District Peace and Development Council Col Maung Maung Shein and Chairman U Han reported on construction of the Kyaungdawgyi and the history of Maha Theindawgyi Pariyati Sarthintaik and religious matters respectively.

This was followed by a donation ceremony which included K 4 million by U Htay Myint-Daw Aye Aye Mon and family of Yuzana Construction, K I million by YCDC, K I million by U Teza of Myanma Billion Group, K I million by U Htein Win of Myintmakha Co, K 500,000 by Daw San San Yi of Super One Co Ltd, K 500,000 by U Thein Tun of MGS Co Ltd, K 100,000 each by U Aung Myint-Daw Pyu Thi of Lupyandaw Padamya Medical Hall, U Khin Shwe of Zaykaba Construction, President of Union of Myanrnar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Win Myint, U Hla Maung Shwe of Shwe Family, Dr Moe Zaw-Dr Su Su Yi and family, U Aye Thein-Daw Li Li Tin Oo, U Win Aung-Dr Daw Khin Win Kyi and U Maung Maung-Daw San San Myint, and K 50,000 by Malun Rice Donation Association and K 427,000 by others. Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and ministers accepted the donations.

The donation for Soonpadetha of Maha Theindawgyi Pariyati Sarthintaik included K 500,000 by Ward Peace and Development Councils under Pabedan Township Peace and Development Council, K 100,000 by U Thein Maung Daw Pa Pa and Son U Tin Maung of Sandhi Traditional Medicine, and K 30,000 by Myanmar-Chinese Buddhist Missionary Association. Then, Head of Thitagu World Buddhist University of Sagaing Hill Maha Dharnma Kathika Bahujanahitadhara Agga Maha Saddhamma-Jotikadhaja Agga Maha Pandita Thitagu Sayadaw Bhaddanta Nanissara delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits for pious deeds. After the ceremony, the secretary-2 and party paid homage to Buddha Tooth Relic kept at the Dhammayon of the Sarthintaik.


(4) Union Flag conveyed from Dagon Myothit (South) to People s Square

YANGON, 12 Feb The Union Flag which rested one night each in Thanlyin Township in Yangon South District, Kyimyindine Township in Yangon West District, Taikkyi Township in Yangon North District and Dagon Myothit (South) in Yangon East District was conveyed from Dagon Myothit (South) Township to the People s Square on Pyay Road where the Union Flag Hoisting ceremony was held.

The Union Flag was then conveyed by relay teams to the hall of the Yangon Mayor where the flag would rest for one year.

The ceremony to convey the. Union Flag which rested one night at Township Sports Ground in Dagon Myothit (South) was held at the Sports Ground in Dagon Myothit (South) Township. Members of District, Township and Ward Peace and Development Councils, departmental officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade and Maternal and Child Welfare Association and the people saluted the Union Flag with the Guard of Honour of Yangon Command while military band of Yangon Command played the National Anthem.

At 6.45 am, Chairman of Yangon East District Peace, and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Pyi took out the flag from the silver bowl on the stage and carried it flanked by the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and police officers, Union nationals and USDA members.

At 6.50 am, Lt-Col Aung Pyi planted the flag in the silver bowl on board the Union Boat. The flag, flanked by the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and police officers and Union nationals, was conveyed to the People s Square along Pale Yadana Street, in Dagon Myothit (South) Township, No 2 Union Highway, Laydauntkan Road, East Race Course Road, Shwegondine Road, Kaba-Aye Pagoda Road, Bahan Roundabout, U Htaungbo Road, U Wisara Road, Ahlon Road and Pyay Road.

The Union Flag was accorded a rousing welcome along the route by members of Dagon Myothit (South), Thingangyun, Tamway, Bahan, Dagon Township and Ward Peace and Development Councils, members of USDA, members of Myanmar Police Force, Red Cross and Fire Brigades, teachers, students and the people waving miniature flags.

The Flag conveyed by the Union Boat arrived in front of the people s Square at 7.20 am, Lt-Col Aung Pyi took out the flag, carried it flanked by the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and police officers and Union nationals. He handed it over to Mayor U Ko Lay at the designated place.

(5) Over 15000  people attend  Hoisting -Ceremony

YANGON, 12 Feb- The 53rd Anniversary Union Day Flag Hoisting Ceremony was held at the People s Square this morning.

After the State Military Band took its designated place, the Union Flag which rested a night each in Yangon South District, Yangon West District, Yangon North District and Yangon East District, reached the People s Square at 7.20 am by the Union Boat.

The flag relay team led by Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay accepted the flag from Chairman of Yangon East District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Pyi. The relay team, flanked by members of Panel of Patrons of the 53rd Anniversary Union Day Flag Hoisting Ceremony member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, representative of delegates of Union Day and delegate of Mon national U Min Khin Maung Lay of Mawlamyine Township, officers of Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and police, Union nationals and students, conveyed the flag to the music of royal drum troupe of Fine Arts Department.

At 7.30 am, the Union Flag was planted in the silver bowl on the stage with the backdrop decorated with the emblems of States, Manaw post of Kachin State, Keinnaya bird of Kayah State, Phasi drum encircled by two buffalo horns of Kayin State, Hornbill bird of Chin State, Hintha mythical bird of Mon State, Thiriwitsa and conch shell of Rakhine State and Shan man playing the long drum of the Shan State.

Then, members of the Panel of Patrons took their designated places on the stage. Present on the occasion were members of Central Executive Committee of Union Solidarity and Development Association, senior military officers, members of Division and District Peace and Development Councils, senior military officers of Yangon Command, heads of central organizations, directors-general, managing directors, deputy directors-general, officers on special duty, heads of office of the ministries, members of YCDC and heads of department, rectors, principals, medical superintendents, members of the Work Committee for Organizing the Ceremony, divisional level officials, representatives of Myanmar War Veterans Organization, Myanmar Red Cross Society, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Myanmar National Working Committee for Women s Affairs, Myanmar Women Entrepreneurs  Association, Myanmar Medical Association, Myanmar Dental Surgeon Association, Myanmar Nurses Association, Myanmar Engineering Association, Myanmar Health Assistants Association, Myanmar Music Asiayon, Myanmar Thabin Asiayon, Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon, Myanmar Writers and Journalists Associations Myanmar Traditional Artistes and Artisans Asiayon, Myanmar Anti-Narcotics Association, Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Myanmar Floriculturists Association and Myanmar Veterinary Surgeon Association, township education officers of Yangon Division, Union nationals, students, local and I foreign journalists, Division, District and Township USDAs, traditional cultural troupe members and delegates of State and Division USDAs and people, totaling over 15,000.

At 7.25 am, Masters of Ceremonies Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint announced agendas of the Union Day Flag Hoisting Ceremony.

Those present at the ceremony saluted the flag to the strains of the National Anthem. Then, the Union Day Flag Relay Team took the place.

Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than read the message of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe.
In front the City Hall, Secretary of YCDC Col Myint Aung took out the flag from the silver bowl and handed it over to Chairman of YCDC Mayor U Ko Lay.

The Mayor, flanked by Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and police officers, Union nationals and students, conveyed the Union Flag onto the stage in the mayor s parlour. At 8.15 am, the Mayor planted the flag in the silver bowl and saluted it.

Today, the Union Flags were flown on the residential buildings and offices. In the evening, buildings, parks, roads, bridges, markets and schools were illuminated.


(6) Padana Nayaka Sayadaw of Patna Myanmar Monastery, India, preordained

YANGON, 12 Feb-Wellwishers U Maung Maung Kywe-Daw Molly Tin (a) Daw Swe Swe Latt (Shwe Minthamee Computer family) preordained Padana Nayaka of Patna Myanmar Monastery, India, and Assistant Abbot Sayadaw of Sydney Myanmar Monastery, Australia, Sayadaw Dr Dhammacara in Maha Pacanave an Kaba-Aye Hill this morning.

Present were Chairman of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Bhaddanta Sobhita and member Sayadaws, Rector of State Pariyatti Sasana University Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Panditabhivamsa and Sayadaws, Adviser to the State Peace and Development Council Office U Arnt Maung, officials of Religious Affairs Department, disciples and guests.

The Chairman of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee and member Sayadaws reordained the Sayadaw Dr Dhammacara.

Vice-Chairman of the Committee Masoeyein Taikthit Sayadaw of Mandalay Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Sirindabhivamsa administered the Five Precepts.

Joint-Secretary Sayadaw Bhaddanta Osadhabhivamsa delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.

Disciples donated provisions to 18 members of the Sangha including the Chairman Sayadaw.

(7) Minister inspects police station, GAD office in Mandalay

YANGON, 12 Feb- Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, accompanied by the Director of Mandalay Division General Administration Department, the Commander of Mandalay Division Police Force and officials inspected Mandalay No S police station and patrols at mid-night on 10 February.

They inspected measures taken for township security, custody and functions of the police station.  Officials of the station reported on tasks being carried out according to the five aims of crime reduction, matters related to the surveillance and news network and keeping lists of guests. The minister and party inspected the way of patrols and gave necessary instructions. At 9.40 pm, the minister inspected progress in construction of Pyigyidagun Township General Administration Department and tree planting.


(8) 63 Ye Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 12 Feb Sixty-three members of National League for Democracy of Ye Township, Mon State, resigned of own accord on 11 November 1999. Sixty-three members of Ye Township NLD,of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Ye Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Subcommission and the party concerned on 11 November 19 99 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
