(1) Senior General Than Shwe inspects Pathein-Monywa Road, cultivation of crops by national entrepreneurs

 YANGON, 9 Feb - Chairman of the State Peace and  Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence  Services Senior General Than Shwe, accompanied by  Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council  , Secretary-3, members of the State Peace and  Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy)  Vice-Admiral and Commander-in-Chief (Air), Deputy  Prime Minister Vice-Admiral , Chairman of Mandalay  Division Peace and Development Council Commander of  Central Command , the ministers, Chairman of Magway  Division Peace and Development Council and officials  left Minbu by car for Minhla Township along  Minbu-Padan-Pa- thein-Monywa Road and inspected  Pathein-Monywa Road on 8 February.

The Senior General and party went to the land reclamation project of Yuzana Co Ltd in Kantoke region in Minhla and inspected beans and pulses and crops and cotton plantations.

Chairman of Yuzana Co Ltd U Htay Myint reported on the project to reclaim 30,000 acres of land in Kantoke region and Kyeekan region in Minhla and Minbu Townships, completion of land reclamation and cultivation of crops.

The Senior General gave guidance on cultivation of crops on commercial scale after completion of pilot cultivation for the region.

The Senior General signed in the visitors' book.

The Senior General and party went to the reclamation project of Myanma Golden Star Co Ltd in Mindon Township.

The Senior General and party inspected plantation of Myanmar Golden Star Co Ltd.  Chairman U Thein Tun reported on reclamation of land in Mindon and Seikphyu Townships, arrangement for reclamation of land, cultivation of beans and pulses and other crops on the reclaimed land, agricultural production in Seikphyu Township and requirement for irrigation.

The Senior General then gave guidance.

Chairman of Myanmar Golden Star Co Ltd U Thein Tun presented Kyat one million for renovation of Shwesettaw Pagoda to Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw and TV sets sets for regional battalions to Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint.

The Senior General inspected pineapple strains.  On his way to Kyangin Cement Plant, the Senior General passed Mindon, Kanma and Padaung Townships.  The Senior General and party were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and officials.

In the evening the Senior General proceeded to Hinthada where they were welcomed by Deputy Commander of South-West Command Brig-Gen Tint Swe and officials.

This morning, the Senior General attended a ceremony to donate provisions to Sarthintaiks in Hinthada.

It was held at Maha Atula Thetkyayanthi Sehtatkyi Phaya Pitakattaw Kyauksataik Museum.

The congregation received the Five Precepts from Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, Ledikyaung Presiding Sayadaw and Maha Dwaya Nikaya Sasanabaing Abhidhajamaha-rathaguru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamajotika Bhaddanta Khamavuda.

The Senior General presented offertories to Bhaddanta Khamavuda.

The Secretary-2 and the Secretary-3 also presented offertories to members of the Sangha.

The Secretary-2 presented offertories to Nun Daw Meda Singi of Padamya Nunnery and Daw Nanasari of Yadanamon Nunnery on behalf of nuns.

The Senior General and party shared merits for the good deeds.

Next, the Senior General asked after health of the Sayadaws and met some officials.

The Senior General inspected renovation of Maha Atula Thetkyayanthi Sehtatkyi Phaya Pitakattaw Kyauksataik Museum and paid obeisance to the pagoda.  He signed in the visitors' book and donated cash.

The Pagoda Board of Trustees presented a picture of the pagoda to the Senior General.

The Senior General and party visited the Pyilonkatkyaw Pagoda and signed in the visitors book.  Senior General Than Shwe donated cash and accepted the picture of the pagoda.

The Senior General inspected cultivation of teak near the pagoda platform.

Senior General Than Shwe toured Hinthada.  The commander reported on cultivation of crops.

Commander Thura Shwe Mann also reported on beans and pulses and oil crops production and reclamation of land.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin reported on arrangements for construction of dams and reservoirs and Minister U Soe Tha on development in the division.

The Senior General spoke on cultivation of paddy and beans and pulses as priority crops, making efforts to boost of double cropping and reclamation of wetlands.

The Senior General and party went to Manaungmyin Pyidawbyan Pagoda in Zalun where they were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun and officials.

The Senior General and party offered lights, flowers and scented water to the pagoda and also presented Shwethingan to the pagoda.

Next, the Senior General signed in the visitors' book and donated cash to the pagoda funds.  Members of the Board of Trusees presented pictures of the Buddha image to the Senior General, the Secretary-2 and the Secretary-3.

The Senior General visited Kyaikkalunbon Pagoda in Danubyu.  He signed in the visitors' book and donated cash to the pagoda funds.

Shop-keepers at the pagoda presented regional products to the Senior General and party.

The Senior General arrived back here in the evening.

(2) Special Refresher Course 39 for Basic Education Teachers concluded

YANGON, 9 Feb - Special Refresher Course 39 for Basic Education Teachers concluded at Central Institute of Civil Service in Hlegu Township, Yangon Division, this morning, addressed by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-1 presented awards to the outstanding trainees.

The trainees also presented donations for building of Koenawin Pagoda and Koenawin Dhammayon, restoration of Bagan pagodas and Union Solidarity and Development Association and CICS Primary School.

The Secretary-1 accepted the donations.


(3) 53rd Anniversary Union Day Commemorative Exhibition opens

YANGON, 9 Feb - The 53rd Anniversary Union Day Commemorative Exhibition opened at the Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wisara Road this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Chairman of the 53rd Anniversary Union Day Commemorative Exhibition Subcommittee Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein formally opened the exhibition.

The Secretary-1 and party observed central showroom, booths on Myanmar-origin of man, customs and culture, prosperity of ancient Myanmar, emergence of Union Pay, "We shall always be undivided and united", book- shops, computers and show-rooms of Ministries of Education, Health, Rail Transportation, Science and Technology, Agriculture and Irrigation, Construction, Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs, Home Affairs and Forestry, News and Periodicals Enterprise and Soft guide.

The exhibition is open to public from 9 am to 5 pm daily till 18 February Admission is free.


(4) Secretary-1 inspects Union Day dinner arrangements

YANGON, 9 Feb - Chairman of the Central Committee for Observance of the 53rd Anniversary Union Day Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected arrangements being made for the Union Day dinner and the full-dress rehearsal of the dances of cultural troupe members of national races which will be staged at the dinner.  The Secretary-1 inspected arrangements being made for the Union Day dinner and the full-dress rehearsal of the dances of cultural troupe members.

He cordially greeted the members of the cultural troupes, and left later in the evening.

(5) Secretary-3 inspects Ngwehsaung Beach

YANGON, 9 Feb - Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, who accompanied Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in- Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe during the tour, inspected chosen site to build Thalutkhwa Bridge and construction of Ngwehsaung Beach Resort in Pathein Township today.

Officials reported on building of the bridge on Thandwe River and Pathein-Ngwehsaung Road.

After giving suggestions, the Secretary-3 and party went to Ngwehsaung village.

They inspected construction of resort buildings at Ngwehsaung Beach on a motorcade.

They arrived back here from the village by helicopter at 7 pm.


(6) Union Flag conveyed from Thanlyin to Kyimyindine

YANGON, 9 Feb - The Union Flag which rested for one night at Thihadipa Sports Ground in Thanlyin Township was conveyed this morning from the Sports Ground by the Union Boat and relay teams to Salin Sports Ground in Kyimyindine Township, under the Union Flag relay programme in four districts in Yangon Division.


(7) Minister inspects industries

YANGON, 9 Feb - Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin inspected No 1 Agricultural Machinery Industry of Myanma Agricultural Machinery Industries on 5 February at Hsinde in Padaung Township.

At his meeting with officials of the industries under the ministry, he discussed production sector.

The next morning, the minister inspected No 2 Auto-mobile Factory (Htonbo) of Myanmar Automobile and Diesel Engine Industries at Kwinhla in the township.

The minister and party inspected No 1 Machine and Tools Factory.


(8) MOA on Rural Industries Development Programme signed

YANGON, 9 Feb - WA signing ceremony of Memorandum of Agreement on Rural Industries Development Programme cosponsored by Cottage Industries Department, Ministry of Cooperatives and Myanmar Association-Japan was held at Equatorial Hotel on Ahlanpya Pagoda Road at 12.30 pm today.  Minister U Aung San and President of MAJ Mr S Nakao made speeches.  Director-General Col Sein Than of Cottage Industries Department and Managing Director of MAJ Mr M Kitasaka signed the MOA.

The minister and the president of MAJ exchanged gifts.

(9) Members of SURA armed group exchange arms for peace

YANGON, 9 Feb - The State Peace and Development Council, upholding Our Three Main National Causes, is striving for national reconsolidating for the country to emerge a peaceful, modern and developed nation.

Armed groups have come to realize that their destructive acts did not benefit the nation and people and that they have to work for regional development. After realizing the genuine good-will and correct endeavours of the government, remaining armed groups are exchanging arms for peace individually or in groups.

Lieutenant level Aik Tun (a) Pan Saikta and wife Ma Nan Mi, Lieutenant level Aik Pat (a) Khun Sit Tun, Cpl Sai Kyan (a) Sai Lyan of 153 Battalion of No 758 Brigade of SURA armed group, bringing together with them two M- 22s, two magazines and 40 rounds of ammunition ex

changed arms.for peace at Mangpan military camp of North-East Command area on 2 February.

Officials of North-East Command warmly welcomed the persons who exchanged arms for peace and attended to their needs.

More persons of armed groups are going to exchange arms for peace.


(10)  62 Monyo Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 9 Feb - Sixty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Monyo Township, Bago Division.

Sixty-two members of Monyo Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Monyo Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 13 October 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
