(1)   Senior General Than Shwe attends ceremony to donate provisions to Sarthintaiks and nunneries in Minbu
 
YANGON, 8 Feb - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander- in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe attended ceremony to donate provisions to Sarthintaiks in Minbu Township held at Mogok Dhamma Yeiktha this morning.
 
The congregation received the Five Precepts, from Presiding Sayadaw of Maha Visutayama Taikthit in Minbu Township Ovadacariya Sasanadhaja Siri Pavara Dhammacariya Bhaddanta Dhammapiya.

Next, Senior General Than Shwe presented provisions to Presiding Sayadaw of Maha Visutayama Taikthit, who accepted on behalf of members of the Sangha in Sarthintaiks in Minbu.

The Secretary-2 presented offertories to Nun Daw Sinnawady of Mogok Yeiktha, on behalf of four Nunneries in Minbu.

The Senior General and party shared merits for the good deeds.


(2)   Government paying serious attention to progress of regions  in uplifting spirit of national solidarity and Union Spirit
 
YANGON, 8 Feb - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented provisions to monasteries in Thandwe Township and met with departmental personnel today.

Accompanied by ministers deputy ministers, senior military officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department and officials, the Secretary-l left here by Tatmadaw aircraft.

On Arrival at Thandwe in Rakhine State at 8.15 am, At the town hall, the Secretary-l and party presented provisions to monasteries in Thandwe Township.

Chairman of Township Sangha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Bhaddanta Nandaminju of Nadawtaung Monastery administered the Five Precepts.

The Secretary- 1 and party presented provisions to 50 abbot Sayadaws.

Sayadaw Bhaddanta Indaka delivered a sermon.

The congregation shared the merits gained.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party offered soon to Sayadaws at Sasana Beikman.

At the ceremony, Tatmadawmen and families of battalions and units under the Western Command presented 150 bags of rice, 100 viss of oil, 100-viss of salt, offertories and cash to monasteries.
 
At Annawa Yeiktha, the Secretary-1 and party met with members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils and departmental personnel.

The Secretary-1 and party arrived back here in the evening.


(3)   Merits shared for building Byanmawihara Dhammayon and Byanmawihara two-storey monastery
 
YANGON, 8 Feb - A ceremony to consecrate Ananda Dhammatheikdi Atulamuni Buddha Image and share merits gained for building of Byanmawihara Dhammayon and Byanmawihara two-storey monastery was held this morning at Byanmawihara Dhammayon, in Bahan Township, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Sayadaws consecrated the Buddha Image at 7 am.

The congregation received the Five Precepts from Vice-Chairman of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Bhaddanta Panindabhivamsa.

Sayadaws recited parittas.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party presented offertories to Sayadaws.

The Secretary-1 accepted the donations.
 
Secretary of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Bhaddanta Kumara delivered a sermon.

The congregation shared the merits gained.

(4)   Union Flag conveyed from City Hall to Thihadipa  Sports Ground in Thanlyin
 
YANGON, 8 Feb - The Union Flag which rested for one year at the City Hall was conveyed from there to Thihadipa Sports Ground in Thanlyin Township this morning under the Union Flag relay programme in four districts in Yangon Division.

The flag started its journey in accordance with the 53rd Anniversary Union Day Flag Hoisting Ceremony national objectives, For all the nationals to safeguard the national policy, non-disintegration of the Union, non- disintegration of national solidarity and perpetuation of sovereignty.  Perpetual flourishing of Union Spirit among the entire nationals; For all the nationals to strive in harmony and unison for the emergence of an enduring State Constitution leading to emergence of a new discipline- flourishing nation; and For all the nationals to ward off with national solidarity the danger of destructionists from inside and outside the nation who are disturbing the State stability, peace and development.

At 6.40 am, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay took out the Union Flag from the silver bowl in the guest hall of the mayors office after saluting it. The mayor carried the flag flanked by four Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and Police Officers and Union nationals and students to the designated place on Maha Bandoola Street in front of the City Hall with the Myodaw music troupe playing royal drum. The public saluted it.

The mayor handed over the Union Flag to Chairman of Management Committee for Organizing the 53rd Anniversary Union Day Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than. The commander then handed over the flag to Chairman of Yangon South District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Sein.

District Chairman Lt-Col Maung Maung Sein carried the flag onto the Union Boat and planted it in the silver bowl at 6.50 am.

The Union Flag flanked by four Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and Police Officers and Union nationals on the Union Boat left for Thanlyin Township along Maha Bandoola Street, Theinbyu Road, Banyadala Road, East Race Course Road, Laydauntkan Road Waizayanta Road Ayeyawun Road and it passed through Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge.

Along the route the Union Flag was accorded rousing welcome by thousands of people and members of Kyauktada, Botahtaung, Mingala Taungnyunt, Tamway, Thingangyun, Dawbon, Thakayta and Thanlyin Township and Ward Peace and Development Councils, Union Solidarity an Development Association Myanmar Police Force, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, teachers and students and departmental personnel waving the miniature flags and putting up banners across the roads.

On arrival at the arch of Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge, Lt-Col Maung Maung Sein took out the Union Flag from the silver bowl on the stage of the Union Boat and carried It flanked by four Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and Police Officers and Union nationals and handed over the flag to Chairman of Thanlyin Township Peace and Development Council U Aye Kyaw Maung.
 
Then, the Flag was conveyed by 25 relay teams of Yangon South District Immigration and National Registration Department, Thanlyin Basic Education High School No 1. Township Fire Services Department, Shoe Factory, No 3 BEHS Thanlyin Oil Refinery, Glass Factory, No 4 BEHS, Township Red Cross Brigade, No 3 Garment Factory, Township Health Department, No 4 and No 19 Garment factories, Thongwa Township USDA, Kyauktan Township FSD, Red Cross Brigade and USDA, MCWA, District Government Employees Cooperative Ltd, Thanlyin Development Affairs Committee, Yangon South District USDA, District General Administration Department and national race team. At the entrance of the sports ground in Thanlyin, Commissioner of Yangon South District General Administration Department U Tin Myint handed over the flag to District Chairman Lt-Col Maung Maung Sein.

The District Chairman carried the flag flanked by four Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and Police Officers and Union nationals and planted it in the silver bowl on the stage at the sports ground at 8.50 am.

Guard of Honour of Yangon Command saluted the flag to the strains of the National Anthem of the Union of Myanmar played by Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Military Band.

Over 6,000 local people of Yangon South District also saluted the flag at the sports ground where it would rest for one night.

At Thihadipa Sports Ground, sports competitions were held in the afternoon and entertainments were presented by Documentary Films and Myawady Anyeint
.


(5)   Minister inspects new Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital

YANGON, 8 Feb - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, accompanied by Director-General of Health Department and officials, inspected new Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital at the comer of Banyadala and Byaingyay-Ohsin Roads in Tamway Township yesterday afternoon.

Superintending Engineer U Aung Kyaw Myint of Building Construction Group-1 of Public Works reported on progress in construction of the hospital, Director-General Dr Wan Maung on organizational set-up and academic matters and Medical Superintendent Dr Chit Kyi and officials on shifting of the hospital and use of operational equipment. The minister attended to their needs. He inspected patient wards, installation of X- ray equipment, preparation for operation theatre and cost-sharing clinics, and gave instructions on cleanliness of the hospital and its environs and building of staff quarters.

The hospital will soon be opened on a grand scale.


(6)   Minister for Industry 1 inspects soap factory in Mandalay
 
YANGON, 8 Feb - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung and officials inspected soap factory of Myanma Pharmaceuticals Industries in Aungmyethazan Township, Mandalay yesterday.

Managing Director of MPI Col Myint Oo reported on the factory, installation of machines and test running.

The minister inspected test production of Shwewa soap.

The soap factory was built by Seinban Industrial Producers Cooperatives Society and Myanma General and Maintenance Industries for distribution of soap to Upper Myanmar and Shan State (North). The factory will open soon.

A similar factory is under construction in Magway.

The minister inspected Myanma Umbrella Factory on 76th Street in Chanayethazan Township.

(7)   Stimulant tablets seized in Kengtung
 
YANGON, 8 Feb - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit, acting on information, while inspecting vehicles at Tarpin Checkpoint, Kengtung, Shan State (East), on 21 January, searched a Superroof car (Ahd1910) and seized passengers Aik Bar, 40, son of U Ar Ti and Ma Ar Mi, 40, daughter of U Ar Tu of Hotit Ward, Mongyan together with 4,460 stimulant tablets.

Action is being taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(8)   22 Taungtha Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 8 Feb - Twenty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Taungtha Township, Mandalay Division.

Twenty-two members of Taungtha Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Taungtha Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Subcommission Office and the party concerned on 24 November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
