(1) Secretary-1 receives Ambassador of Bangladesh

  YANGON, 3 Feb-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Ambassador of Bangladesh Mr Jahangir Saadat who has completed his tour of duty at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4.50 pm today.

Present together with Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung. Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and officials.



(2) Extended cultivation of mixed-crops for benefit of nation farmers stressed

YANGON, 3 Feb-Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin inspected summer paddy cultivated with water supplied from Yandawchaung Creek at Tagundaingkwin in Pyigyitagon Township, Mandalay Division, on 1 February.

Managing Director of Myanma Agriculture Service U Tun Than, General Manager U San Myint and members of Division Agricultural Supervisory Committee briefed the minister on points of the farms.  Accompanied by officials, the minister met with farmers and discussed cultivation of wheat as a mixed crop.

MAS staff reported to the minister on mixed cropping of wheat and sunflower in separate rows, benefits of cultivating sunflower to help ensure edible oil sufficiency in the nation, mixed cultivation of sunflower and beans and pulses such as suntabya and gram and benefits of mixed cropping.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin stressed the need to make arrangements to cultivate sunflower with other suitable crops which will benefit farmers more.

After inspecting mixed cultivation of wheat, sunflower and grams in Hsadaung village, Sagaing Township, Sagaing Division, he discussed with farmers on putting more land under mixed-crops.

At Ywathagyi village, Wetlet Township, the minister and party inspected mixed cultivation of sunflower and gram.

Together with Chairman of Shwebo District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Thein Han, officials and members of District and Township Agricultural Supervisory Committees, the minister observed inflow of water at Koebinchaung Dam in Shwebo Township and maintenance of the facility.

Director-General of WRUD U Win Shwe reported on irrigation of crops on highlands near the dam with the water lifted from the dam through canals and plans to irrigate 2,000 more acres in the future.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin gave suggestions.  In the afternoon, the minister and party inspected cultivation of pedisein with seeders at Myemon Farm of MAS in Kanbalu Township.  General Manager of MAS.

U San Myint explained efforts to conduct double-cropping at the farm by changing the growing season of maize, changing the cultivation time of monsoon-crops such as pedisein and pesinngon to the start of rainy season to overcome effects of interruption of rain in July, cultivation of maize in the mid rainy season and efforts to boost the yield.

The minister and party then inspected application of high-yield methods in cultivation of pesinngon at a model plot of the farm and seeders, weeders, fertilizer spreaders and corn harvesters devised by staff of the farm, stressing the need to widely distribute the machines among farmers.

At the briefing hall of the farm, the minister heard a report on progress in cultivation of crops at the farm, test cultivation of maize and pesinngon, introduction of farm machinery and distribution of seeds presented by officials.

At the warehouse, the minister and party inspected systematic storage of corns for export, corn winnowing, producing of bokashi fertilizer by.  spraying EM liquid on farm residue and samples of quality corn.They also gave instruction to officials on future tasks.

(3) Eye medicines donated for patients from Kyaukse Township
 

YANGON, 3 Feb - The family of MyittaU Eye Clinic donated intraocular lens, suture, gel and other medicines for eye diseases to be used for patients from Kyaukse Township, Mandalay Division, at the office of the Ministry of Health this morning.  Assistant Lecturer of Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital Dr Aung Myat Soe and wife Daw Thazin Myint Aung presented donations to Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo. Also present were officials of the Ministry of Health.


(4) Hong Kong Chinese national cultural dance troupe presents entertainment

YANGON, 3 Feb-Hong Kong Chinese national cultural dance troupe presented an entertainment programme at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street at 7 pm today to raise funds for Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association.

Present at the show were Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, honorary patron Daw Khin Cho Oo, members of Panel of Patrons, executives, department heads, officials of Chinese Embassy and guests.  The cultural dance troupe presented 19 kinds of performances comprising traditional dances and songs of different eras.  The cultural dance troupe continues entertainment programme tomorrow beginning 7 pm.


(5) Japanese delegation calls on Minister for Education

YANGON, 3 Feb -Chairman of Tokiwa Corporation Ltd of Japan Managing Director of Myanmar Tokiwa Corporation Mr Naoyuki Soga and party called on Minister for Education U Than Aung at his office this afternoon. Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister U Myo Nyunt, Director-General of Education Planning and Training Department U Bo Win, of No 3 Basic Education Department Col Thein Aung and officials.

(6) Commander inspects agricultural work in Amarapura Township

YANGON, 3 Feb- Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, accompanied by Secretary of Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Ohn, members of Agricultural Supervisory Committee and officials, inspected the plantations of wheat and sunflower mixed cropping and beans and pulses and sunflower mixed cropping of farmer U Lwin and U Kan Htwe at Kabe Village in Amarapura Township yesterday morning.  The commander also inspected exhibition of quality beans seeds and preparations for cultivation of summer Sesamum.  Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and party went to Yaykyipauk electric-powered water pumping project. Officials reported to the commander on preparation for availability of water and extension of canals.


(7) Donations for all-round renovation of Sule Pagoda

YANGON, 3 Feb-A ceremony to donate gold foils and cash for all-round renovation of Sule Pagoda was held at the pagoda at I pm today.  Present were Chairman of Yangon West District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein, chairmen of Township Peace and Development Councils, Chairman of the Committee for All-round Renovation of Sule Pagoda member of Pagoda Board of Trustees U Tha Yin and members, invited guests and well-wishers.

Altogether 23 well-wishers presented 26 gold foils valued at K 42,000 and over K 4.229 million to members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees, who presented certificates of honour to them.  Today's donations were over K 103.18 million including over K 34.74 million for all-round renovation of the pagoda, over K 62.89 million for the gilding of the pagoda, over K 5.06 for renovation of Bo Bo Gyi Hall and K 478,519 for building the bridge.


(8) General Administration Department holds four-monthly work coord meeting

YANGON, 3 Feb-General Administration Department held its third four-monthly work coordination meeting for 1999 in the meeting hall of the department this afternoon.

Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing addressed the meeting.  Also present were Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Director-General of GAD U Aung Thein, Director-General of Bureau of Special Investigation U Than Myint, Director-General of Prisons Department U Kyaw Tun, Deputy Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Brig-Gen Hla Tun, deputy directors-general, advisers, directors and commissioners of states and divisions.  The minister said at the third four-monthly work coordination meeting, strengths and weaknesses of the work done within a year by the department are to be assessed, and efforts are to be exerted to successfully carry out the tasks of the department.  He stated that it is necessary for all to strive to be good employees of administration with firm belief and conviction, and it is also required to be in consonance with basic can concepts and rules and regulations to follow and practise the policies laid down by the State.

The minister also urged all to try to understand the changing political, economic and social situations and to discharge their duties in accord with the existing laws and by-laws.  In conclusion, the minister called on all to regard as a national duty the six resolutions passed at the mass meeting ushering in the 21st Century held in the ancient cultural zone of Bagan on 1 January 2000.  The meeting will continue tomorrow.

(9) Chinese cultural troupe calls on Minister for Culture

YANGON, 3 Feb- A Hong Kong-based Chinese cultural troupe, together with the patron and chairman of overseas Chinese nationals association, called on Minister for Culture U Win Sein at his office this afternoon.  They discussed promotion of cultural exchange between the two countries and the current peaceful situation of the country.  Also present were Director-General of Fine Arts Arts Department U Zaw Than, Director General of Archaeology Department U Nyunt Han and officials.


(10)  New records set in trials for international archery competitions

YANGON, 3 Feb- Trials for international archery competitions were held at the Archery Range, Kyaikkasan, this morning.

Present on the occasion were Secretary of Myanmar Olympic Committee Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik, President of Myanmar Archery Federation U Khin Shwe and executives and officials.  Twenty-three archers took part in it.

Member of Panel of Patrons of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation Daw Khin Hla Hla, Deputy Director-General of MPF Police Brig Gen Hla Tun and U Khin Shwe presented prizes to outstanding archers.

Thin Thin Khaing (Home Affairs) and Khin Than Nwe (YCDC) set new records with 631 points and 612 points respectively, breaking the record of 605 points set by goal medallist Khin Than Nwe in 1998 Asian round robin archery competition.


(11)  28 tentatively selected for national soccer team

YANGON,3 Feb-Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint met 28 football players tentatively selected for the national team at Thuwunna National Indoor Stadium-l this morning.

Also present on the occasion were Secretary of MOC Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik and officials.  Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint spoke on the occasion.

The Secretary of MOC explained arrangements for the national team.  The tentatively selected players are Aung Aung Oo, Ko Ko Aung, Soe Myat Min, Min Min Aung, Thet Khaing, Tint Zaw, Ko Ko Naing, Min Zaw Oo, Zaw Lin Htun, Min Thu, Than Wai, Thet Khaing Soe, Khin Maung Htwe, Than Toe Aung, Aung Kyaw Moe, Zaw Htaik, Myo Myint Htwe, Tint Naing Tun Thein, Maung Maung Gyi, Myo Hlaing Win, Win Htaik, Nay Thu Hlaing, Win Hlaing, Aung Moe Oo, Tin Htwe, Hwet Za Kan, Maung Maung Kyaw and Min Min Htet.


(12)  Dhammacariya and Pathamabyan title conferring ceremony to be held in Mandalay

YANGON, 3 Feb-Religious Affairs Department of the Ministry of Religious Affairs will hold a ceremony to confer titles on 187 members of the Sangha who passed Dhammacariya Examination for 1999, 16 who passed Pathamabyan Examination, 16 who stood first in Five Nikaya Pali Examination and nine who stood first, second, and third in Abhidhamma and Vithuddhimag Examination at Maha Atulawaiyan (Atumashi) Kyaungdawgyi in Mandalay on 6 February.

Soon will be offered at the State Pariyatti Sasana Tekkatho (Mandalay) at 10 am, and the title conferring and certificate presenting ceremony will be held at noon.  Invitations have been al ready sent to members of the Sangha concerned by mail.

(13)  Stimulant tablets seized in Lashio

YANGON, 3 Feb-A combined team comprising members regional intelligence unit, Myanmar Police Force and departmental personnel action on information, while inspecting vehicles at Yaypu Checkpoint, Lashio, Shan State (North), on 23 January, searched a Sunny car (Pa/ 5334) driven by Aung San Oo, 20, son of U Nyo Win, Region 1, Ward 1, Lashio, Shan State (North) and seized 224,000 stimulant tablets bearing "WY" in 1 12 packets which were hidden in the car.  Also in the car were Than Htay, 30, son of U Than, Nandawun Street, Ward 8, Lashio and Hla Moe Zaw, 26, son of U Yin, Yadanar Tintain Street, Ward 8, Lashio.  Action is being taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(14)  60 Mingin Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 3 Feb-Sixty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Mingin Township, Sagaing Division.  Sixty members of Mingin Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mingin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 14 September 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
