(1) Minister inspects roads and bridges in Ayeyawady Division
 
YANGON, 31 Jan. Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Myint Thein and officials of Public Works inspected construction of Kazan-Tarkway Road linking Maubin-Hsamalauk Road in Ayeyawady Division and the approach road to Bo Myat Tun Bridge on 28 January.

The minister gave instructions and inspected progress of work. The minister and party went to the site of Pantanaw Bridge and Superintending Engineer U Htay Myint reported on progress of work. The minister gave instructions on safety.

The minister and party went to Ngawun Bridge on Ngathaingchaung-Gwa Road. Engineers-in-charge reported on road sections. The minister inspected road maintenance.

The minister inspected construction of Ywale Yoegyi Bridge and Bezarin Bridge. The minister and party met engineers in Ingapu Township Engineer s office and fulfilled their requirements. The minister and party inspected Ingapu-Hinthada Road and discussed the work done with officials of Public Works. The minister also inspected Hinthada-Zulu-Danubyu Road.

(2) Minister receives officials of Singapore
 
YANGON, 31 Jan-Minister for Co-operatives U Aung San received Chairman Mr Lewis Tan and party of Techmat Benture Pte at his office at 4.pm today. Also present on the occasion were Director-General Col Sein Than of Department of Cottage Industries, Managing Director Daw Khin Swe Soe of Co-operatives Import & Export Enterprise and officials of Co-operatives Department and Office of the Ministry of Cooperatives.

(3) Prizes presented to winners in U Lun Gywe  Solo Art Show commemorative art contest
 
YANGON,31 Jan -Prizes were presented to winners in the art contest held in commemoration of U Lun Gywe Solo Art Show this evening at Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel. Present were Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, heads of department, the rector of University of Culture, the principal of Art and Sculpture School, prize winning students and guests.

Minister U Win Sein gave a speech. U Lun Gywe presented K 1.5 million for preservation of paintings at the National Museum and for the welfare funds of students of Art and Sculpture School.
 
Minister U Win Sein accepted the cash. U Lun Gywe then presented an oil painting for the museum. Director-General of Department of Cultural Institute U Myint Thein Swe accepted it. Minister U Win Sein, Deputy Minister U Soe Nyunt and Director-General U Myint Thein Swe presented prizes to winners in the art contest. Every first prize winner in oil and water-colour contests received K 10,000 plus art equipment, second prize winner K 7,000 plus art equipment and third prize winner K 5,000 plus art equipment. Minister U Win Sein presented certificates of honour to persons who rendered assistance to the art show. Director-General U Myint Thein Swe presented gifts to judges. U Lun Gywe spoke words of thanks.

(4) Track and Field Meet of Ministry of Home Affair
 
YANGON, 3 I Jan-Track and Field Meet of the Ministry of Home Affairs commenced at the Aung San Stadium this morning. Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing spoke.

Also present on the occasion were Daw Khin Hla Hla, wife of the Minister for Home Affairs, Daw Aye Pyi Wai Khin, wife of the Minister for Commerce, Chairperson of Myanmar Women Sport Federation Dr May May Yi, Chairman of Sport Committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, the directors-general of Sports and Physical Education Department, General Administration Department. Bureau of Special Investigations and Prisons Department and their wives and guests. Minister Col Tin Hlaing and wife Daw Khin Hla Hla presented prizes to best athletes and officials championship shields to Myanmar Police Force men and women teams.

(5) Course No 6 for management level officers of   Customs Department opens

YANGON, 31 Jan-Course No 6 for management level officers of Customs Department of the Ministry of Finance and Revenue opened at the training hall of Customs Department this morning.

Present were Director General of Customs Department U Tun Chun. Deputy Director-General Thiha Thura U Thein Tun Tin, directors and trainee officers. Director-General U Tun Chun said courses were conducted with the objectives of enabling the officers to understand the State  seconomic Policy and current economic situation, procedures and rules of the department and other related departments and to possess capability to manage staff and turning out junior leaders with good morale.

He said Myanmar is a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), World Customs Organization (WCO) and ASEAN and rules, procedures and agreements are to be practically implemented for the interest of the State according to the current situations. In so doing, the staff have to learn occupational knowledge at home and abroad and experience throughout their career. Management level officers will surely discharge mammoth duties in the future, he added. He urged the trainees to make efforts to possess skill, management, better qualifications and good morale. The two-month course is being attended by 20 trainees of Customs Department.

(6) Management, clerical staff courses opened

YANGON, 31 Jan- Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin addressed the opening ceremony of Management Course No 4 and Clerical Staff Course No 2 at the Central Training School of the Education and Training Department in Ward 51, Dagon Myothit (North) Township, this morning.
 
Also present on the occasion were directors-general, deputy directors-general of departments under the ministry, directors and officials. Altogether 60 staff officers and service personnel (Admin Grade-II) of State and Division and Township Development Affairs Committees are attending the management course and 60 clerks (Grade-II) and (Grade III) the clerical staff course. The two courses will last eight weeks.

(7) CSSTB holds third four monthly meeting

YANGON, 31 Jan-Third four monthly meeting of Civil Service Selection and Training Board for 1999 was held at the Civil Service Affairs Department today. Present were Chairman of CSSTB Dr Than Nyunt, members U Nyunt Swe, U Aung Myint, U Hla Myint Oo and U Kaung Nyunt and the directors-general of departments and rectors of institutes under CSSTB and advisers. The meeting focused on the work done during the third four monthly period and the work to be carried out.

(8) Welfare Committee for Parade Columns of 55th  Anniversary Armed Forces Day meets

YANGON, 31 Jan The second coordination meeting of the Welfare Committee for Parade Columns of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day was held at the meeting hall of Directorate of Supply and Transport of the Ministry of Defence on Alanpya Pagoda Road this afternoon.

Chairman of the committee Director of Supply and Transport Col Than Htay gave a speech. Officials reported on arrangements being made by respective subcommittees. Then, officials of No 1 Transit Centre, Central Supply and Transport Battalion, Ayeyawady Naval Region Command, Maintenance Air Base, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Cooperatives, Directorate of Trade, Myanma Farms Enterprise, Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department, Markets Department and Veterinary & Slaughter Houses of Yangon City Development Committee and Ministry of Industry-l took part in the discussions. Then, Chairman of the committee Director Col Than Htay gave concluding remarks.

(9) YCDC emerges champion in Women’s Open Soccer
 
YANGON, 31 Jan-The final match of the Year 2000 Women s Open Soccer Tournament organized by Myanmar National Committee for Women s Affairs was held at Aung San Stadium this evening.

Yangon City Development Committee beat Ayeyawady Division 4-0.Among the spectators were Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, General Secretary of MOC Director General Col Thaung Htaik of Sports and Physical Education Department, officials, senior military officers, Head of Leading Patrons of Myanmar Women s Sports Federation Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Leading Patrons Daw Khin Than Nwe and Daw Khin Cho Oo and members, members of Myanmar National Committee for Women’s Affairs and Myanmar National Working Committee for Women s Affairs and guests.
 
After the match, Leading Patron. of MWSF Daw Shwe Thet presented woman of the match award to Ma Than Myint of YCDC; Leading Patron Daw Khin Aye presented best player award for the tournament to Zarchi Win of YCDC; Leading Patron Daw San San Myint presented best goalkeeper award to Myint Myint Than of YCDC, Leading Patron Daw Kyin Khaing presented best midfielder award to Ma Than Myint of YCDC; Leading Patron Daw Khin Hla Hla presented best striker award to Khin Thida Tun of Ayeyawady Division; Leading Patron Daw Su Su Thein presented best defender award to Soe Thanda of Ayeyawady Division; Leading Patron Daw Aye Pyi Wai Khin presented most goal scoring team award to YCDC; Leading Patron Daw Kyu Kyu Win presented fair play team award to Transport; Leading Patrons Daw Aye Aye and Daw Khin Myo Oo presented third prizes to Mandalay Division and Transport. Leading patron Daw Khin Cho Oo presented second prize to Ayeyawady Division and leading Patron Daw Khin Than Nwe present first prize to YCDC. Then Head of Leading Patron of MWSF Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe present championship trophy to YCDC.

(10)  Gifts for YGH

YANGON, 31 Jan-Mrs Candy Cuneomowinski, Professor Dr Parkash Singa Talwar and Dr Millan Baidya of Valley West Community Hospital, Sandwich, the United States of America, donated hospital equipment worth US$ 6,000 for Yangon General Hospital, at 1.38 pm today. The donation ceremony took place at the hospital where Medical Superintendent Dr Teik Wan accepted the donation.

(11)  Colour Photo Competition to mark 55th  Anniversary Armed Forces Day to be held

YANGON, 31 Jan-The Work Committee for Organizing Literary and Photographic Competition will hold Colour Photo Competition in commemoration of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day.

The competition will be held under titles  Nation building Endeavours throughout. Myanmar and Chentable Cultural Arts. The photographers may send four print entries for each category, 10" x 12" or 10" x 14". The entries must not have t won prizes at any other competition or appeared in publications. Data and captions are to be provided on a separate sheet, which is to be attached with the entries. The entries are to be sent to U Tun Min, Secretary, Work Committee for Organizing Literary and Photo graphic Competition to mark the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces, Information and Public Relations Department, 22,24, Pansodan Street, Yangon , not later then 14 February.

(12)  29 armed group members exchange arms for peace

YANGON, 31 Jan-The State Peace and Development Council, upholding Our Three Main National Courses, is striving for national reconsolidating for the country to emerge a peaceful, modern and developed one.

Realizing that their destructive acts did not benefit the nation at all, remnant armed groups who understood the genuine goodwill and correct endeavours of the government have been exchanging arms for peace individually or in groups.

Sgt Khaw Ko, wife Bi Taw, daughters Naw Lar Pho and Naw Char Pho, Cpl Htoo Phaw, wife Mon Kay, daughters Naw Muli Na and Naw Pa Pa Tha, sons Saw Char Htoo Mu and Saw Ei Tu, Pvt Ka Lay Pho, wife Naw Thida. son Tai Du Htoo, daughter Naw Phaw Htoo, Pvt Saw He Cho. wife Naw Htoo Pi, daughter Naw Hto He, Naw Tar Zay Pho and Naw Ye Khon, sons Saw Le Pi and Saw Htoo Ei Pho, Pvts Saw Pha Pha and Aung Kyaw Moe of No 10 Battalion of KNU armed group bringing together with one AK-47, one magazine, 10 rounds of ammunition, one BA-63, one magazine, 34 rounds of ammunition, one .30 carbine, one magazine, five rounds of ammunition, one KNU-made launcher, six shells and six rounds of ammunition, one 60mm mortar, 10 shells and two grenades and platoon commander level Hsan Aung of No 101 Battalion of ABSDF armed group exchanged arms for peace at Coastal Region Command area.
 
Similarly, Pvt Thang Oak of CNA armed group in North-West Command area, Pvt Nai Ta La Mon (a) Zaw Min of New Mon State Party armed group with a grenade in Southern Command area and captain level Kha Shan, organizer Aik Kywe and Pvt Aik Lin of Lahu armed group with one .30 carbine, one magazine and 14 rounds of ammunition in Triangle Region Command area exchanged arms for peace.

Officials warmly welcomed 29 persons who exchanged arms for peace at the respective military camps in December 1999 and fulfilled their requirements. More members of armed groups plan to exchange arms for peace.

(13)  1.3958 kilos of heroin seized in Lashio

YANGON, 31 Jan- A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, lay in waiting near Yaykandaung Pagoda, Lashio, Shan State (North), and stopped and searched a white vehicle (1Ka/ 4917) which was on its way from Lashio to Mandalay, on 1 7 January. They arrested Cho Min Sein (a) Pho Cho, 35, son of U Kyaw Thein of Ward 7, and Than Zaw Win, 31, son of U Maung Win of Ward 9, Lashio, who were on the vehicle and involved in drug trafficking.

Further information led to the arrest of Kyaw Win, 31, son of U Kyaw Lwin, and Ma Khaung Nu, 30, daughter of U San Maung of Maunghan Village, Mohnyin Township, Ma Saung Naw, 42, daughter of U Daung Zaung of Hopang, Ma Thein Nwe (a) Ma Tin Tin Hla, 40, daughter of U Maung Ko of Ward 7, Lashio and Tin Than Oo, 42, son of U Hlaing of Mandalay, together with 1.3958 kilos of heroin hidden in 88 soap cases, at the house of Ma Than Than Oo, daughter of U Mya Hmwe of Ward 1, Lashio. Action is being taken against the culprits according law.

(14)  81 members resign from Monyo NLD of own accord

YANGON, 31 Jan-Eighty-one members resigned of their own accord from the National League for Democracy of Monyo Township, Bago Division. Eighty-one members of Monyo Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 13 October 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
