(1)Entire people urged to harmoniously, unitedly strive for development

YANGON, 29 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt gave instructions on the work done during the third four-monthly period of 1999 in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Transport this afternoon.

Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe reported on the organizational set-up of the ministry, the strength of the staff, conditions of planes and ships, the work done by Inland Water Transport, Myanmar Five Star Line, Myanmar Airways, Myanma Port Authority and Myanma Shipyards during the period of nine months (from 14-99 to 31-12-99), condition of earning local currency and foreign exchange, financial status  of the office of the ministry and departments and staff welfare.

Then, the Secretary-1 said today is the time when  the entire people are to harmoniously and unitedly strive for development of the nation.

In view of international situation, at the beginning of the 21st Century, every nation is making all-out efforts for their development.

In striving to enable the Union of Myanmar to keep abreast of international community, efforts are to be made to further cement national solidarity in order to wipe out evil legacy of colonialists, disintegration of national solidarity, off the face of Myanmar soil and waters.

On the other hand, efforts need to be doubled and tripled to keep pace with the changing situation and development of other nations.

At the same time, it is necessary to prevent the scheme of the group of subversives attempting to enervate Myanmar and to push the nation under the domination and influence of other nations.

It is becoming clear that they are perpetrating subversive activities with the assistance of external elements with a view to breaking up national solidarity, hindering the improvement of living standard of people and disrupting economic development of the nation.

The national duty of every citizen of Myanmar is to strive for national solidarity and development of the nation as best they can.

In other words, it is the time when every citizen of the nation is to strive to enable the motherland to stand splendidly and independently in international community, to make efforts for perpetuation of sovereignty of the nation and to destroy the schemes of destructive elements.

The transport sector is playing a vital role in striving for development of the State With the smoothness and swiftness of transport, the flow of commodity will become quick and all the regions of the nation will be able to enjoy economic development and higher standard of living.

As much as all the regions of the nation develop harmoniously and the gap of living standard of all the races is getting narrower and narrower, national solidarity will become stronger and stronger and the Union will develop all the more. With the flourishing of Union Spirit and emergence of favourable conditions for development of the State, the economy of the State will develop with added momentum.

Therefore, the transport sector needs to provide services to enable national people to travel safely and peacefully and to send goods and commodities smoothly and swiftly, and all0the officials are to work; with national outlook.

Today, departments, non-governmental organizations and national entrepreneurs are cooperating in striving for the development of the State and to improve living standard of people. Therefore, all need to contribute to the efforts for implementation of national goals in the furtherance of interests of the State and the national people.

With regard to assessing the progress of departmental work, it is necessary for all to avoid the act of neglecting national duties and to dissociate themselves from the view that these duties are not directly concerned with their department.

Development and extension work of Myitkyina Airport, Putao Airport and Thandwe Airport being undertaken by Myanma Airways will invariably be beneficial to local people. In accord with the policy of the State that priority is to be given to national solidarity and interests of people, work related to the transport sector is to be done successfully.

At the time when efforts are being made for development of towns and villages, the Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River System is to take measures against erosion of towns, historical monuments and religious edifices with national outlook.

He spoke of the need to pay emphasis on maintenance of waterways for durability of bridges being built by Ministry of Construction, to closely watch rivers and streams for not losing territory in the areas bordering neighbouring countries and to undertake necessary measures in international river like Mekong River through coordination among the nations while continuously observing the parts belonging to our country and development on other parts.

He said now we are endeavouring for national economic development based on agriculture and the Ministry of Transport is to provide assistance for smooth transportation in agricultural sector, for utilization of water from the river all year round, for innovation of spare parts of farm machinery and weather forecasts to farmers.

It is found that development of tourism industry, promotion of external trade and inflow of international investment and technology to the country depend on speedy and smooth process of the Ministry of Transport, he said.

That is why the government is making efforts for development with added momentum after laying down plans in all sectors. Only when each sector is developed, will the objectives of the State be realized, he added.

Now is the time the government is endeavouring for rapid national development relying on national forces. He urged service personnel to practically implement the State's objectives in making concerted efforts for development through continuous innovation.

Exaggerating the deficiencies and weaknesses of some government employees, the destructive elements were seen to have been attempting to make the people misunderstand the government.

The Secretary-1 urged the employees to make sure that the public realize the genuine goodwill of the government to achieve national development, public peace and uplift of socio-economic life of the public after laying down programmes in all aspects. He urged them to discharge their duties to bring benefits to the people out of duty consciousness and loyalty.

The Secretary-1 specially stressed the need for the employees to strive for boosting commodity production, improving productivity, properly raising the earnings and ensuring efficiency in the use of funds while minimizing loss and wastage and avoiding irregularities.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 called on the employees of the Ministry of Transport to improve the efficiency of the ministry, strive to develop to achieve international standard, provide transport services with the promise of peace, comfort and safety for passengers, contribute towards regular flow of commodities, ensure correct and smooth export and import of goods and work for rapid national economic growth. In so doing, he said, they were to avoid discharge of duties perfunctorily but to give their all with national awareness to achieve all-round development.

(2)Secretary-1 inspects construction project of Hline River Bridge (Shwepyitha)

YANGON, 29 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, Deputy Minister for Transport , Deputy Commander of Yangon Command and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the construction site of Hline River Bridge (Shwepyitha) at 3 pm today.

At the briefing hall, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe and superintending engineer U Myint Lwin briefed the Secretary-1 on the project, progress of work and arrangements for timely completion of the project.

Then, Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than reported to the Secretary-1 on the condition of waterway near the project.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended to the needs.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected progress of work and installation of the beams at the bridge.

Hline River Bridge (Shwepyitha) will link Insein and Shwepyitha Townships. It is of suspension type with steel frames, and 3,415-feet long.

It has a 52.6 foot motor-way and six-foot pedestrian lanes on either side.

The Secretary-1 and party proceeded to administrative office of Shwepyitha industrial zone.

Director-General of Human Settlement and Housing Development Department U Arnt Kyaw reported to the Secretary-1 on the construction of roads for the development of Shwepyitha, upgrading of the roads, extension of industrial zone, running of the new factories and construction of modern housing estate and low-price housing complex in Shwepyitha Township.

The Secretary-1 gave instructions to officials.

Afterwards, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party went to the factory of Myanbisco Food Industries Co Ltd in Shwepyitha Industrial Zone 3.

They were welcomed by Managing Director U Zin Win and officials who conducted them round the factory.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt signed in the visitors' book and left there in the evening.

(3)Secreretary-2 inspects Aungzeya Bridge Project

YANGON, 29 Jan - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected Aungzeya Bridge Project today. The Secretary-2 inspected the steel cables to be used for the bridge and had a cordial meeting with technicians from the People' s Republic of China.

The Secretary-2 and party heard a report on implementation of the project and progress of work by Superintending Engineer (Project) U Khin Maung Aye.

Deputy Minister U Tint Swe also gave an additional report.

  Deputy Minister U Pe Than and Deputy; Commander Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint reported on assistance being provided
sector-wise for the project.

The Secretary-2 said the purpose of his visit to the project was to fulfil requirements of the project and to encourage employees.

He added that in the road linking Yangon City and Hlaingthaya Township, there is only a bridge namely Bayintnaung Bridge, and there occurs traffic jams frequently.

On completion of the project, transport will be come smooth, and if the construction of the bridge is completed one day earlier than scheduled, benefits will accrue one day earlier than expected.

The Secretary-2 urged all to learn the suspension bridge construction technology from foreign technicians at the project to build the bridge which meets the set standard and to compile a paper on suspension bridge construction technology and to teach it at the construction training school.

Then, the Secretary-2 presented gifts to the employees through Assistant Engineer (Civil) Daw Thein Nu.

Aungzeya Bridge, spanning Hlaing River and linking Insein Township and Hlaingthaya Township, is 4 786.3 feet long and 82% of construction work has been completed.

(4)Third Housing and Construction Exhibition 2000

YANGON, 29 Jan - The Third Housing and Construction Exhibition 2000 was opened at the Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wisara Road this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

The exhibition was jointly organized by Myanmar Construction Entrepreneurs Association and TTF (Yangon) Co Ltd with the assistance of Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Construction and Department for Human Settlement and Housing Development.

Chairman of MCEA U Khin Shwe and Managing Director of TTF (Yangon) Co Ltd Mr Anant Prasertsit explained about the exhibition.

Deputy Minister U Tint Swe, Managing Director of DHSHD U Arnt Kyaw, U Khin Shwe and Mr Anant Prasertsit formally opened it.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected the booths.

A total of 60 companies will display construction materials from 9.30 am to 6 pm till 1 February. Admission is free.

(5)Two Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Sayadaws emerge

YANGON, 29 Jan - Bhaddanta Silakkhandha - bhivamsa and Bhaddanta Vamsapalalankara who passed the oral and written examinations of the 52nd Tipitakadhara Selection Examination of Year 2000 ( 1361 ME), were awarded Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida title, and therefore it can be said that the flourishing of Buddhist Sasana spanned the golden era and has reached the diamond era.

Pariyatti examinations sponsored by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the State Peace and Development Council are Tipitakadhara Selection Examination Dhammacariya Examination, Pathamabyan Examination, Nikaya Examination, Abhidhamma and Visuddhimagga Examination and Basic Buddhist Cultural Examination Out of these six examinations, Tipitakadhara Selection Examination is the most extensive, most difficult and profound and highest.

There are 20 prescibed treatises and 8,026 pages to recite. To look up the terms. there are over 100 treatises.

Out of over 400,000 members of the Sangha in the Union of Myanmar, the maximum number of members of the Sangha who enrol to take the oral examination every year, is not more than 150. But, the number of members of the Sangha who actually take the oral examination is about 70 at the maximum. In view of this, how difficult, profound and extensive the examination is can be guessed.

This examination has been held since 1949 (1310 ME), and up to the 51 st Tipitakadhara Selection Examination held in 1999 (1360 ME), there emerged six Tipitakadhara Tipitaka-kovida Sayadaws who passed the oral and written examinations of the Tipitakadhara Selection Examination and three Tipitakadhara Sayadaws who passed the oral examination.

Tipitakadhara Selection Examination is held every year. Visittha Tipitakadhara Mahatipitakakovida Dhammabhandagarika Mingun Sayadaw emerged at the sixth examination, Visittha Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Dhammabhandagarika Pakokku Sayadaw at the 12th examination, Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Dhammabhandagarika Pyay Sayadaw at the 16th examination, Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Tipitakamahaghandayon Sayadaw at the 26th examination, Tipthara Tipitakakovida Yaw Sayadaw at the 37th examination and Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Yesagyo Sayadaw at the 47th examination. It can be found that only every eight years, a Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Sayadaw emerges. A Tipitakadhara Sayadaw and a Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Sayadaw have emerged at the 52nd Tipitakadhara Selection Examination unprecedently, outstandingly and marvelously. It is not for those who lack good cumulative result of past meritorious deeds to promote the Sasana of the Buddha. Only those who have good cumulative result of past meritorious deeds are able to promote and propagate the Sasana, and to enable them to pay homage, two Sasana Arzarnis emerged.

The State Peace and Development Council Government and devote Buddhist people make donations for the members of the Sangha and pay homage to the Buddhist Sasana, and candidate members of the Sangha, lecturer Sayadaws, Sayadaws who compiled questions, and the Tipitakadhara Selection Committee of nine Ovadasariya Sayadaws and other Sayadaws made collective and energetic efforts. As a result, Bhaddanta Silakkhandhabhivamsa and Bhaddanta Vamsapalalankara emerged as Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Sayadaws.

(6)Minister inspects loading of goods

YANGON, 29 Jan - Secretary of Leading Committee for Regionwise Development in Agriculture Sector Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung inspected the loading of machinery onto mv Ko Toe Gyi this morning.

The Z-craft will leave for Bokepyin Township and carry two bulldozers, one road roller, one trailer, fertilizers, saplings, spare parts and general goods of South Dagon Oil Mills Co Ltd for development of Taninthayi Division.

The minister gave instructions on safety of waterway and arrival of goods.

(7)18 members resign from Ngazun NLD of own accord

YANGON, 29 Jan - Eighteen members resigned of their own accord from the National League for Democracy of Ngazun Township, Sagaing Division.

Eighteen members of Ngazun Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 29 December 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
