(1) Modern, qualified Tatmadaw essential for nation to be free from aggression, win international esteem and defend herself

YANGON, 26 Jan - Prizes were presented to winners in the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Ninth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition which concluded today at the People's Park.
 
Chairman of 55th; Anniversary Armed Forces Day Leading Organizing Committee Patron of Ninth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition Committee Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo delivered an address.
 
Lt-Gen Tin Oo presented prizes to prize winning leaders of the military bands and prize winning military bands.

In division A, leader of military band of Office of Commander-in-Chief (Air) won best award.  In division B, leader of North-West Command military band won first prize, Yangon Command military band second prize and leader of No 66 Light Infantry Division military band third prize.  In Division C, leader of Defence Services Institute of Medicine military band won first prize, leader of No 12 Military Operation Control Command military band second prize and leader of No 9 Military Operation Control Command military band third prize.

Military band of Defence Services Academy won the best prize in division A.  North-West Command military band won first prize, No 11 LID military band second and Northern Command military band third in division B.  Defence Services Institute of Medicine military band won first prize, No 9 Military Operation Control Command military band second prize and No 12 Military Operation Control Command military band third prize in Division C.

The prize winning bands saluted the Chief of Staff (Army).

Lt-Gen Tin Oo also presented gifts to the school band of No 3 Basic Education High School Mingala Taungnyunt Township.

He then presented special prizes to winners in the respective levels:

The winning bands demonstrated their skills.



(2) Ninth Military Band Competition in commemoration of 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day reviewed
 
YANGON, 26 Jan - A meeting to review the Ninth Military Band Competition in commemoration of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day was held at Pyidaungsu Hall in Kyaikkasan Grounds this evening.

Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Patron of Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition Committee Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo delivered.

The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of the 55th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Patron of Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition Committee Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.


(3) Customs Day observed

YANGON, 26 Jan - Customs Day was observed with a ceremony at the training hall of the Customs Department at the corner of Maha Bandoola Street and 49th Street this morning.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister U Khin Maung Thein said being a member country of World Customs Organization, Myanmar's Customs Department is dealing with the departmental work in accordance with international customs norms, helping the nation's market-oriented economic system make progress.

Efforts are to be made to rise above the targets set by the nation, he added.

Director-General U Tun Chun and Deputy Director- General Thiha Thura U Thein Tun Tin presented prizes to children of the staff of Customs Department who were outstanding in education.


(4) Minister for Commerce meets merchants

YANGON, 26 Jan - Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met merchants at the ministry this evening.

Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone spoke.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan reported on rules on export and Managing Director U Min Hla Aung on matters relating to agricultural export.

The minister and official replied to queries of the businessmen.


(5) Minister attends Third Meeting of ASEAN Tourism Ministers

YANGON, 26 Jan - Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin attended the ASEAN Tourism Forum (AFT) 2000 and Third Meeting of ASEAN Tourism Ministers in Bangkok on 23 January morning.

Present were ASEAN tourism ministers, the ASEAN Secretary-General, heads of tourism boards from ASEAN member countries.

They discussed the development of tourism in the ASEAN region and promotion of advertisement programme presented by ASEAN Task Force, ASEAN Communications Team for Tourism and the 11th Meeting of ASEAN NTO's.

Then, they held a press conference in the afternoon.

A ceremony to open ASEAN Tourism Exhibition was held with dinner.

Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand Mr Kom Dabbaransi attended the ceremony.

Entrepreneurs of Myanmar Tourism Services took part in the exhibition.


(6) Minister meets guests from Japan
 
YANGON, 26 Jan - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met President of Komatsu Asia & Pacific Pte Ltd of Japan Mr Suzuki Yuzo, accompanied by General Manager Mr Christopher Dacruz and part, at his office at 4 pm today.

Also present were Deputy Minister and directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises.


(7) Vice-President of SRV National Assembly calls on Chairman of NCCC

YANGON, 26 Jan - Vice-President of National Assembly of Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Nguyen Van Yeu and goodwill delegation members, currently here at the invitation of Chairman of National Convention Convening Work Committee U Aung Toe, accompanied by Ambassador of SRV Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa, paid a courtesy call on Chairman of National Convention Convening Commission Maj-Gen Saw Lwin at the extension hall of the President's Office on Ahlon Road at 12.30 pm today.


(8) Blood Circulation Device donated to No 2 MH

YANGON, 26 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies Director of Defence Services Intelligence Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt donated a set of Blood Circulation Device to No 2 Military Hospital (Bed-500).

General Staff Officer (Grade 1) Lt-Col Myint Aung Kyaw, on behalf of the Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, presented the blood circulation device to Professor Col Ye Thway at the hospital at 10.30 am today.


(9) SRV delegation visits Bagan-NyaungU, Mandalay
 
YANGON, 26 Jan - Vice- President of National Assembly of Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Nguyen Van Yeu and goodwill delegation members, currently here at the invitation of Chairman of National Convention Convening Work Committee U Aung Toe, accompanied by Secretary of National Convention Convening Work Committee U Aye Maung and officials, left here by air for Bagan-NyaungU yesterday morning.

They were welcomed by Secretary of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myo Aung and district and township level officials.

The goodwill delegation visited the Bagan Archaeological museum.

Director of Department of Archaeology U Kyaw Oo Lwin and officials conducted them round the museum.

Mr Nguyen Van Yeu signed in the visitors' book.

The Vietnamese delegation then visited Ananda Pagoda and Shwezigon Pagoda

The delegation left NyaungU for Mandalay by air at 2.30pm.

They were welcomed at Mandalay Airport by Deputy Commander of Central Command Brig-Gen Nay Win, Secretary of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Ohn and departmental officials.

The goodwill delegation then visited Myanansankyaw Shwenandaw m the afternoon.

Mr Nguyen Van Yeu signed in the visitors' book and then visited U Sein Myint's gold embroidery work.

They proceeded to Mandalay Hill and made donations to the pagoda funds and enjoyed the sunset in
Mandalay.

The delegation met Deputy Commander of Central Command Brig-Gen Nay Win at the Yangyi Aung Yeiktha of the command in the evening.

Also present were Secretary of National Convention Convening Work Committee U Aye Maung and Committee member Dr Thaung Myint and departmental officials.

Deputy Commander of Central Command Brig-Gen Nay Win hosted dinner in honour of the delegation.

Mr Nguyen Van Yeu presented gifts to them.

The delegation arrived back here by air this morning.

The delegation, accompanied by Ambassador of SRV Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa, paid a courtesy call on Chairman of National Convention Convening Commission Maj-Gen Saw Lwin at the extension hall of the President's Office on Ahlon Road at 12.30 pm today.

Then, the delegation visited Youth Training School (Kyaikwaing) of Social Welfare Department on Kyaikwaing Pagoda Road.

Mr Nguye Van Yeu presented donations to School head U Win Zaw for the school.

The delegation visited Bogyoke Market at 3 pm.


(10)  30 kilos of Ephedrine powder seized

YANGON, 26 Jan - Six packets of Ephedrine powder weighing 30 kilos were seized by members of Defence Services Intelligence unit from four men near May Guest House in Maha Aungmye Township, Mandalay, on 13 January.

Acting on a tip-off, the authorities saw four men about to traffick in drugs .  The four men were Khin Maung Htwe, 29, of Shwekyin Village, Patheingyi Township, Thihan Kyu, 37, of 106, 80th Street, between 12th and 13th Streets, Pyilon Chantha Ward, Aungmyaythazan Township Mandalay, Tha Win Tun, 36, of 126, 80th Street, between 13th and 14th Streets, Aungmyaythazan Township and Wan Shi Kyi, 33, Strand Road, Monywa.

They were arrested with the cache and a Nissan Sunny Zamyinzwe/7994 was seized.

Action is being taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(11)  Ex-representative-elect of NLD meets voters

YANGON, 26 Jan - Dr Ye Myint who resigned from representative-elect from Kyangin Township Constituency-2 and National League for Democracy met voters and the public the the sports ground in Kyangin Township this morning.

Dr Ye Myint said he had attended the National Convention as a delegate of NLD.  When Daw Suu Kyi was released from house restriction, NLD representatives had to leave the National Convention under her absolute order.

Daw Suu Kyi's response to presentations submitted by representatives-elect of Dedaye and Taungdwingyi townships was against democracy practices.

Members of NLD were not allowed to know the decisions of higher-1evel members in advance. They had to face the absolute power of NLD central Who turned down their presentations. Representatives also felt so disappointed to leave the National Convention.

He also elaborated on Daw Suu Kyi's attempts to block foreign investment, adding increase in the foreign capital will lead to building of more facilities required for national development.

He said formation of the ten-member committee and perpetrations to call the Hluttaw are dangerous acts; he left NLD as he would be included in the persons causing the nation and the people trouble as long as he was a member of the party.

Present were voters of the constituency, ex-members of NLD, observers who are not from the government bodies and the people totalling 2,500.


(12)  62 Ye NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 26 Jan - Sixty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ye Township, Mon State.

Sixty-two members of Ye Township NLD, Mon State, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Ye Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 11 November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
