(1) Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance to trainees of No 31 Primary Teachership Course of University for Development of National Races

YANGON, 24 Jan - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance to trainees of No 31 Primary Teachership Course of University for Development of National Races in Mingala Hall of the Pyithu Hluttaw building at 9 am today.

First, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance at the ceremony.

Excerpts from Senior General Than Shwe's guidance are as follows:
 

-Measures being taken to enable good and smooth transport all over the nation to ensure development of national races from all the regions including remote and inaccessible regions which lagged behind in development.
-Efforts being made for economic education health and social development in order to narrow development gap and achieve harmonious development in the entire nation.
-It is of great necessity to see and know the role of teachers who completed courses from the University for Development of National Races.
-It is fundamentally imperative that all the citizens have education of high standard in striving for development of the nation and the people.

-Teachers who completed courses from the UDNR are to assume responsibility for uplift of education standard of the people and the children of  border areas.

-Arrangements are to be made for the emergence of intellectuals- and intelligentsia for development of human resources.

-Union Spirit is the spirit of striving for prosperity of the Union where national races reside through amity and unity.
 
Then, the ceremony came to a close at 9.55 am.

After the ceremony, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe and party cordially met the trainees and supervisor teachers.



(2) Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe hosts dinner in honour of UDNR trainees

YANGON, 24 Jan - Chairman of.the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe hosted dinner at the Pyithu Hluttaw building in honour of trainees of No 31 Primary Teachership Course of the University for Development of National Races at 7 pm today.

The Senior General arrived at the Pyithu Hluttaw building at 6.20 pm and cordially greeted the trainees of No 31 Primary Teachership Course of the University for Development of National Races in front of the Mother Myanmar Statue of the Pyithu Hluttaw Office.

Before and during the dinner, variety songs were presented by vocalists accompanied by Myanma Athan modern music troupe.  After the dinner, the Drama Division of Fine Arts Department presented cultural dances to the audience in the Thabin hall.


(3) Vice-President of National Assembly of SRV and party call on ministers
 
YANGON, 24 Jan - Vice-President of the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and Central Executive Committee Member of Vietnam Communist Party Mr Nguyen Van Yeu and party accompanied by Joint-Secretary of Chairman of National Convention Convening Work Committee U Thaung Nyunt and members and officials of the Vietnamese Embassy, visited Shwedagon Pagoda this morning.

The guests made donations to the pagoda funds.

The Vietnamese delegation met Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission U Thaung at the MIC Office.

The guests together with the Ambassador of Vietnamese called on Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung at 2 pm.

At the University of Culture, Joint-Secretary 1 of Chairman of National Convention Convening Work Committee U Thaung Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, Rector U Tin Soe and officials welcomed the guests.

The Deputy Minister for Culture and the Vice-President of the National Assembly of SRV gave speeches.  The Deputy Minister presented a painting portraying the scenery of Bagan.

(4) Minister inspects No 1 Ahlon Wharf Extension Project

YANGON, 24 Jan - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe together with Deputy Minister for Transport, Managing Director of Myanma Port Authority and officials, went to the office of No 1 Ahlon Wharf Extension Project this morning.

Managing Director of MPA U Thein Htay reported on progress of work of the project and the shifting of buildings of MPA situated in the area of the project and Managing Director of Asia World Port Management Co Ltd U Tun Myint Naing on implementation of the project and arrangement for extension of work.

Then, the minister and party inspected No 2 Ahlon Wharf and No 1 Ahlon Wharf Extension Project.

The minister gave instructions on timely completion of the project.

Afterwards, the minister, the deputy minister and party inspected the unloading of fish and prawns from coastal trawlers at the wharf owned by Mann Myanmar Company at the central model fish market and the site chosen for construction of a new wharf.

The minister gave instructions on the beautifying of ports.


(5) Production-sharing contract on exploration and production of oil and gas signed

 YANGON, 24 Jan - The production-sharing contract on inland block No EP4 (Maraman-western Pyay region) for oil and gas exploration and production in Shwedaung and Padaung townships was signed by Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise of the Ministry of Energy and Prime Resource Management (Cyprus) Ltd of Canada at Yadana Hall of the Ministry of Energy on Pyay Road this afternoon.

Present on the occasion were ministers, the Attorney-General, deputy ministers, directors-general, managing directors and officials, Managing Director Mr David Stelck of Prime Resource Management (Cyprus) Ltd and officials.

Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi gave a speech.

Then, Managing Director U Kyaw Nyein of MOGE and Managing Director Mr David Stelck of Prime Resource Management (Cyprus) Ltd spoke on the occasion.

They then signed and exchanged the document.  Afterwards, Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi presented permit to the officials.


(6) Minister views " Artist U Lun Gywe's Art Show"

YANGON, 24 Jan - Minister for Culture U Win Sein viewed "Artist U Lun Gywe's Solo Art Show" opened at the multipurpose hall of the National Museum this morning.

Deputy Minister U Soe Nyunt and Artist U Lun Gywe spoke and then formally opened the show.


(7) 72 members led by Deputy Commander of No 758 SURA Brigade exchange arms for peace
 
YANGON, 24 Jan - The State Peace and Development Council, upholding Our Three Main National Causes is striving for national re- consolidation with genuine goodwil.  Realizing that thelr destructive acts did not benefit the nation at all and understanding the genuine goodwill and correct endeavours of the government, remaining armed groups have been exchanging arms for peace individually or in groups.

The Government and people warmly welcomed them and fulfilled the requirements building model villages and houses, reclaiming land for agriculture and livestock breeding fanns and industries on manageable scale for the security of life and peaceful livelihood of those who have exchanged arms for peace and their families.  It has also laid enrlphasis on tulfilling their heaith, education and social needs.

After seeing successes of the State Twelve Objectives laid down by the State, remnant armed groups exchanged arms for peace.

A 72-member armed group led by Deputy Commander U Ar San of No 758 Brigade of SURA armed group, together with two pistols, seven M-23 sub-ma- chine guns, three M-16s, one M-21, 19 M-22s, one BA-63, one BA-64, one BA-94, two M-79 launchers, totalling 37 assorted arms, 28 magazines, 2,744 rounds of ammunition, 15 40-mm shells, one BA-93 shell and one grenade, ex- changed arms for peace at Tanyang military camp in North-East Command on 20 January.

A ceremony to exchange arms for peace by Deputy Commander U Ar San and members of No 758 Brigade of SURA armed group was held at Town Hall in Lashio, Shan State (North), on 22 January.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Commander of North-East Command Brig- Gen San Thein, senior military officers, the Secretary of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council and members, Lashio District and Township level officials, members of Union Solidanty and Development Association, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, traditional cultural troupes, national race leaders of local region, peace negotiators, persons who exchange arms for peace and local people totalling about 1,000.

Deputy Commander Brig-Gen San Thein gave a speech.

Then, Deputy Commander U Ar San of No 758 Brigade of SURA armed group reported on reason for exchanging arms for peace and presented arms and ammunition to the Deputy Commander.  Afterwards, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen San Thein presented K 1,280,000 as monetary assistance for persons who exchanged arms for peace to U Ar San.

 Departments, companies and local national race groups presented K 900,000 to the Deputy Commander.

After the ceremony, the Deputy Commander and party inspected arms and ammunition and cordially met the persons who exchanged arms for peace. Officials then presented citizenship cards to them and attended to their needs.

More members of armed groups are to exchange arms for peace.

(8) 45 Nattalin Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 24 Jan - Forty-five members resigned from National League for Demo.racy of Nattalin Township, Bago Division.

Forty-five members of Nattalin Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord.  resigned by sending letters of resignation to Nattalin township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 4 November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
