(1) Senior General Than Shwe, officials continue tour of Taninthayi Division

YANGON, 22 Jan -Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe met with the Tatmadaw members and their families of Dawei, Yebyu and Kalainaung Stations at the regional battalion in Dawei this morning.

The Senior General and party then attended a ceremony to offer provisions to Sayadaws, members of the Sangha and nuns from Dawei at the Dhammayon of Lawkamarazein Pagoda.

The ceremony was graced by State Ovadacariya Zeyawady Sarthintaik Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta, Candavamsa, members of the State Central Working Committee of the Sangha, the Chairman Sayadaws of Division and Township Sangha Nayaka Committee and members of the Sangha.

Also present together with the Senior General were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy)

Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein and Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, Deputy Prime Minister Vice Admiral Maung Maung Khin, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Chairman of Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Coastal Region Command Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung, the ministers, senior military officers and division, district and township level officials.  The Senior General offered rice and alms to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Candavamsa.

Afterwards, the Secretary-2, the Secretary-3 and party offered rice and alms to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha.  The Secretary-2 also donated rice to nuns through Presiding Nun of Yadana Manaung Nunnery Maha Gandavacaka Pandita Daw Rupa Theingi.  Then, merits gained were shared. After the ceremony, the Senior General and party paid obeisance to Lawkamarazein Pagoda in Dawei.  The Senior General made donations towards the funds of the pagoda. The members of the pagoda board of trustees presented a picture of the Buddha Image to the Senior General .

After that, the Senior General and party toured Dawei.  Next, the Senior General and party went to Thayet chaung by helicopter.  They were welcomed there by Acting Tactical Operations Commander Lt-Col Tin Hla Oo, Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Shwe Maung and officials, the Tatmadaw members and families.  Lt-Col Tin Hla Oo re ported on matters related to Thayetchaung Township.  The Senior General gave guidance.  The Senior General also met with township level departmental officials and employees at the office of Township Peace and Development Council.  The ministers who accompanied the Senior General, also met with township level departmental officials and employees at the office of Township Peace and Development Council.  The chairman of Township Peace and Development Council reported on efforts for development of the township and requirements.

Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint and Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin gave,instructions.

Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha and Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung  also gave instructions to the officials concerned.

Director-General of Department of Medical Science Professor Dr Kyaw Myint visited Thayetchaung Township People's Hospital.The Senior General and party arrived back here in the afternoon.  The Secretary-2, who accompanied the Senior General, together with Commander Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Brig-Gen Maung Oo of Dawei Station, Brig-Gen Hla Myint and officials attended a ceremony to open the multimedia teaching centre of No 1 Basic Education High School of Dawei.

Also present were Headmistress of No 1  BEHS Daw Myint Myint and staff, members of the school board of trusties parents.  well wishers and students.

Commander Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung Headmistress Daw Myint Myint and member of the school board of trustees U Kyee Chan formally opened the multimedia teaching centre.

The Secretary-2 formally unveiled the stone plaque;of the multimedia teaching centre, and  inspected the computer room he painting and arts room, the domestic science and handicrafts room and the music room.

Students demonstrated their skills, and the Secretary-2 presented prizes to them. The Secretary-2 and the commander accepted cash donated for the school by members of the school board of trustees and the parent teacher association and town-elders.

The Secretary-2 said that it is encouraging to see efforts for emergence of the multimedia teaching centre of the school.

He also lauded collaborative efforts of the headmistress, the school staff, the school board of trustees and parents, and called for cooperation of parents, teachers and students in implementing education promotion programmes.

The Secretary-2 and party proceeded to No 3 Basic Education High School. They were welcomed there by Headmaster U Saw Harvey and the school staff and students.

The Secretary-2 and party watched Dawei traditional dances of students and observed the paintings drawn by the students.

Secretary-2 Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo went to the regional battalion, and met with the Tatmadaw members and families of Dawei Station .

Chairman of the Leading Committee for Development of Region-wise Agriculture Sector Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and members met with Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Taninthayi Division Commander Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung and working committee members, chairmen of six subcommittees and members.  The Secretary-2 said the leading committee and the work committee has laid emphasis on regional sufficiency of  rice, cultivation of oil palm on another 500,000 acres of land and cultivation of rubber on the plots of land where paddy and oil palms cannot be cultivated.

Head of State Senior General Than Shwe has given guidance on development of Taninthayi Division .The Secretary-2 urged departmental personnel to discharge their duties conscientiously and energetically and to provide assistance for undertakings of national entrepreneurs.

The Secretary-2 encouraged all to present the requirements.  Secretary of the Leading Committee Brig-Gen Lun Maung reported on measures taken for development of Taninthayi Division.  Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Taninthayi Division Commander Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung reported on arrangements to reclaim 100,000 acres of land to achieve regional sufficiency in rice, requirements for the building of small embankments to get water for agricultural purpose, requirements for supply of machinery and other requirements for the fish and livestock sector, the agriculture sector and the trade sector.

Minister Brig Gen Pyi Sone, Minister Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein and Minister Col Thein Nyunt explained , availability of paddy strains suitable to the region, border area development.  The Secretary-2- gave instructions.

(2) Secretary-1 chairs Privatization Commission meeting

YANGON, 22 Jan-The Privatization Commission held its 112000 meeting at the .  Office of the Commander-in Chief (Army) at 1 pm today was attended by Chairman of Privatization Commission Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, the Auditor-General, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, department heads and officials.

The meeting sought the approval of those present for the minutes of Meeting No 3/99. Director-General of the Project Appraisal and Progress Reporting Department U Tin Hlaing reported on the implementation of the decision by  Meeting No 3/99.  Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, commission members and officials took part in the discussions.

Then, a general round of discussions followed.  In replying to the reports of those present, the Secretary-1 gave instructions on the work. The meeting came to a close in the afternoon.


(3) Myanmar-Kandy Monastery cornerstone laid

YANGON, 22 Jan-A cornerstone laying ceremony for a new two-storey of Myanmar-Kandy Monastery held at the site in Yuzana Garden City of.  Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township this morning was attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were ministers, deputy ministers, the vice mayor, senior military officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, members of Division, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental personal, construction entreprenesurs, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Chairman of Yuzana Construction Group U Htay Myint and officials.

Chairman of Yuzana Construction Group Thiri Thudhamma Manijotadhara Recipient of Excellent Performance in Social Field (Grade-1) U Htay Myint said Yuzana Garden City Project was implemented by Yuzana Construction Group in cooperation with Department for Human Settlement and Housing Development in December 1997.

He said the first phase 28 single unit houses, 160 three-storey buildings, 80 four-storey buildings, 484 five-storey buildings, 26 five storey buildings with two units, 16 miles of road and a four-storey school were completed.

He spoke on construction of concrete roads and tarmac at a cost of K 668.7 million, a commuter bus service from Yuzana Garden City to Hsinmalaik highway bus terminal and construction of a four-storey school with 24 classrooms including multimedia classrooms at a cost of over K 60 million.

Sayadaw Agga Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja Bhaddanta Sumanasagara of Myanmar Monastery in Kandy in Sri Lanka will reside in the new monastery.

U Htay Myint reported on arrangements for construction of Myanmar-Kandy Kyaungtaik with scale model.  The Secretary-1 then gave instructions.  At the auspicious time, the Secretary-1 placed gem casket in the foundation. Next, the Secretary-1 and Chairman U Htay Myint placed the stone inscription in the foundation.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1, Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin .Hlaing, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt Gen Tin Ngwe and Chairman U Htay Myint laid the foundation.

The Secretary-1 and party performed related rituals to mark the.completion of the ceremony. The Secretary- 1 and party inspected houses in Yuzana Garden City.  The Secretary-1 and party went to the construction site of Yangon Thanlyin Bridge No 2 to link Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township and Thanlyin Township.

Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe and officials reported on data of Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge No 2 Project and arrangements.  The Secretary- 1 gave instructions.  The Secretary-1 and party inspected  the site for Information and Public Relations Department Office of Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township.


(4) Dinner marks 46th Myanmar Medical Conference conclusion

YANGON, 22 Jan?A dinner to mark the 46th Myanmar Medical Conference of the Myanmar Medical Association was held at the hall of MMA building at 249 Theinbyu Road, this evening, attended by Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary- I of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.  Also present at the dinner were ministers, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, the President of MMA and executives, Myanmar surgeons from foreign countries, delegates of States and Divisions and guests.


(5) Commander greets UDNR trainees on excursion

YANGON, 22 Jan- Chairman of the Management Work Committee for the excursion of the trainees of No 31 Primary Teachership Course of University for the Development of National Races Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than met the UDNR trainees at No 1 Transit Camp here this morning. Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board Dr Than Nyunt and members, Chairman of Reception and Accommodation Sub-committee Commandant of Records Office Commander of No 4 Military region Col Myo Myint and responsible personnel greeted the trainers. They later visited the Garment Factory of the Opal International Co and FMI City.  In the afternoon ,they also visited the People's Square and People's Park, Defence Service Museum and the National Museum.


(6) First Private Bank opens Latha Branch
 
YANGON, 22 Jan- ceremony to open Latha Branch of First Private Bark Ltd was held at the branch, 119/121, Latha Street, Latha, at 8 am today.  It was attended by Minister for France and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Than Tun, Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry, Chairman Dr Sein Maung of FPB Ltd and officials, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and guests.

Minister U Khin Maung Thein spoke on the occasion. In his address, the minister said the FPB has extended its branches in cities, which are in economically strategic position and the branch opened today is the 13th of its kind, adding it will be help for businesses and financial matters as the branch is extended in the township the bank is unitedly taking part in Myanmar Bank Association in accord with the objectives of the associations, he stressed.

Later Chairman Dr Sein Maung spoke words of thanks.  Then, Minister U Khin Maung Thein and Chairman Dr Sein Maung formally opened the branch.


(7) Cultivation of summer paddy, cold season  crops and beans and pulses discussed in Hmawby

YANGON, 22 Jan-Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Commander, of Phugyi Station Brig-Gen Saw Hla Min, Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint and Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Matt inspected regional development in Hmawby Township this morning and discussed cultivation of summer paddy, cold season crops and beans and pulses with farmers and departmental personnel.Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than inspected plantation of pineapples at battalions of Yangon Command in Wanctchaung Village, Hmawby.

The commander inspected raising of goat in Wanetchaung Village.  Farm in-charge Major Thant Zin reported on the farm.  The commander met members of Township, Ward and Village Peace and Development Councils, departmental officials and farmers.  He said Hmawby is one of the main paddy growing townships in Yangon Division and spoke of the need to cultivate summer paddy to exceed the targets and to extend cultivation of oil crops and beans and pulses.  Necessary machinery were pro vided to the farmers, he added.  He said there will be no difficulty for agriculture because Hmawby is an irrigated township.

He said only if systematic cultivation methods were used paddy production would increase and farmers and the country would prosper.Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Ye Hla reported on administration, agriculture and regional development.  The commander fulfilled the requirements. Altogether 8,385 acres of summer paddy have been cultivated.  A total of 7,000 acres of beans and pulses and 7,200 acres of oil crops are cultivated.  The commander inspected agriculture and livestock breeding camp of Yangon Division Police Force.


(8) Hospital equipment worth US$ 35,000 donated to Central Women's Hospital

YANGON, 22 Jan- Under the arrangement of Ministry of Health and Singapore Volunteers Overseas Programme, the workshop on Colposcopy/Leep Surgery Ultrasound and Safe Nursing Practice was opened at Central Women's Hospital on 17 January.  Singapore International Foundation ( OG Specialist Team) leader Dr Ho Tew Hong presented hospital equipment worth over US$ 35,000 to Medical Superintendent Dr Hla Myint.


(9) Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association launches shops

YANGON, 22 Jan -The launching of shops at Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association was held at the multi-purpose building of MMCWA at the corner of Thanthuma Street and Parami Road in South Okkalapa Township this morning.

Present were Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and EC members, patrons of Work Committee, owners of shops and-guests.

Chairperson Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe formally opened the shops. Then, Chairperson Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Vice Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, EC members and guests went through the shops.  The launching ceremony was held at the building.  Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe made a speech.

U Soe Myint of Family Construction Group presented related documents to the shops to Daw Kyu Kyu Swe. Then, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented keys of shops to owners.  A clinic for obstetrics and gynecological diagnosis will be opened on 24 January, in a building in the environs of the multi-purpose building.


(10)  Year 2000 Myanma Trade Fair Commences

YANGON, 22 Jan - With the permission of the Ministry of Commerce and with the assistance of the Directorate of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute, Year 2000 Myanma Trade Fair was opened at the Tatmadaw Convention Centre on U Wizara Road this morning.

The trade fair is organised with the aim of enabling Myanmar' s market oriented economic system to keep abreast of the world, achieving development of Myanmar's economy with momentum in the year 2000 and promoting Myanmar's economic standard.

The opening ceremony was attended by Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan; Director of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute Col Ye Htut, Commander of No 3 Military Command Col Win Maung, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, the chairman and members of Dagon Township Peace and Development Council, foreign correspondents of Myanmar Foreign Correspondents Club and officials.

Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan and officials formally opened it.  Vice-Chairman of Committee for Organizing the Trade Fair U Aung Kyu Hein spoke on the occasion. Variety items of personal goods, electronics, machines, fashion designs, stationery, men's and women's wears, TVs and VCRs and generators of companies from Singapore, Japan, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Australia, Italy, England, Korea, Thailand, the United States, and Hong Kong are on display at the trade fair which is open to the public till 25 January.


(11)  Myanmar Youth beat Defence 2-1 in Quadripartite Soccer Tourney

YANGON, 22 Jan- Defender Zaw Lin Tun's goal gave a 2-1 win to Myanmar Youth team against Defence team in the third match of Quadripartite Soccer Tournament at the Thuwunna Youth Sports Training Centre Stadium this evening.

The tourney is being held for selection of talented foot- ballers for the national team till 26 January.  'It was Ministry of De- fence team who. scored the opening goal of the match.  In the 8th minute, striker Win Hlaing of Defence team scored a close-range goal, grabbing a chance on the mistake by the Myanmar Youth team's goalkeeper.  Defence team controlled the game until the coach of Myanmar Youth substituted his defender Aung Kyaw Myint and two strikers.  In a few minutes, the youths equalized through a close-range from substitute Nay Thu Hlaing.  Until the half-time whistle, both sides scored no more goals.  Myanmar Youth team's coach substituted his goalie Zaw Myo Latt with Aung Aung Oo at half-time.

In the 59th minute, Defence team's goalie Ko Ko Aung made a good save to defy the long-range shot from substitute Soe Myat Min of Myanmar Youth.  In the 82nd minute, Myanmar Youth team's defender Zaw Lin Tun made it 2- 1 to help his team win the match.  Ko Ko Aung of Defence won the Best Goalkeeper Award of the Match, Min Min Aung of Myanmar-Youth the Best Defender Award, Win Hlaing of Defence the Best Striker Award and Aung Kyaw Moe of Myanmar Youth the Best Midfielder Award. Man of the Match Award went to Thet Khaing, defender of Defence team.  Prizes were given away to the players by Managing Director U Zaw Win Naing of Kanbawza Bank and Col Taung Htaik.


(12)  36 Letpadan Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 22 Jan-Thirty-six members resigned from National League for Democracy of Letpadan Township, Bago Division.

Thirty-six members of Letpadan Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Leapadan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 29 November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
